Croydon: How It Is - November 2024
This is my fifth annual November visit to Croydon to film it and capture the town "how it is".
I am a local historian and have made many films in the Croydon area so I do pick out certain historical elements (notably the architecture) and include some nostalgia.
Comments are reviewed before publishing, there may be a delay because of this. I ask that they are in keeping with the content I produce on my channel. If not, they will be removed.

A Croydon Victorian Treasure in Norfolk - Addington Well Beam Engine
Просмотров 3713 месяца назад
This masterpiece of Victorian design and engineering operated at the Addington Well Pumping Station in Croydon from the 1890s until the site was modernised with electric pumps in the 1970s. This engine was one of two, the other being at Crossness in London and not assembled. It was transported in three loads and shut down in 1975 then restarted in 1983 by the same man, Mr Rickard. No you are not going mad, there was a window that you could see loaves passing, I know this as i went to Tavistock School, that is no longer there. The swap shop was a wonderful place< i remember that my father and I used to go in there to buy parts for my Hornby railway. I have just recently found your videos and they bring back a lot of memories for me, I was born in Croydon in 1954 and lived there till 2005, so thank you for the memories.
Thanks for confirming it, Greg! I’m delighted that you found my channel - there is quite a bit of nostalgia on here and I really enjoy reading the comments and people telling their connected stories 👍🏻
Thank you for this very informative and well done video. 👍👍👏👏😃 Can i ask what handheld equipment you use? as it looked like someone else was filming you at one point, when you were standing near the green railings near Waterworks Cottages. I was unaware that the tea rooms existed and was built around the valve station building, so i enjoyed seeing the photos of this as when I had seen the video 'short' of this earlier, I was wondering if it had been in the grounds of Royal Russell School, as the video shot to a view of the school gates, after showing a photo of the teahouse. I don't know if you did that intentionally but it added to my interest to know more. Also the route that you took to get to see the valve station, is that the only way to get there? as you said you wouldn't recommend it and it did look very close to the tram line. And is that as close as we can get to the valve station? as it seemed quite far away, at the other end of the field.
Hi, for that one I used my Insta360 camera on a stick and then reframe it when editing it. It magically removes the stick when it processes the clips! The Valve House is definitely in the enclosed, covered reservoir. I just showed a shot of the school to establish where I was and the location context. There are pathways near to the reservoir fencing but some of them are more accessible than others - mainly due to undergrowth and changes in terrain. I would suggest going to the Coombe Lane tram stop and walking back on level ground to the gates where the Thames Water signs are - there are tracked used by their vans to show the way. Hope that helps!
It looks like an incomplete spider web from above and like an ancient monument on the ground and the music makes it seem mysterious too, almost alien like, especially when you were moving the camera round. I've taken all of those exits when I was out walking and exploring years ago. You are probably aware of the pathway that runs adjacent next to the Primary School on Croydon Road, just a little way up on the left hand side. It crosses over the Caterham Bypass, if I remember rightly. Further up the Caterham Bypass, there is a bridge that links the 2nd half of Tillingdown Hill, that I have read has ghostly apparitions and a bloody history to do with war on that land, as people who live or have lived there had said of. So if you haven't done a video of that area, then I was wondering if you might consider it, thanks.
I chose the music for that reason 😁. I am planning a short walk to include the pathway, and I made a video of Tillingdown in the summer, link here: Caterham - Tillingdown Area Country Walk ruclips.net/video/D8UopQP5aXc/видео.html. I have a theory about the ghostly sightings, I will share it at some point, stay tuned!
@philswallow Thanks!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍 I am glad I asked then. I also have heard that there is a ghostly apparition of a female that crosses the Caterham Bypass. Have you heard of that aswell?
@roedeer9083 yes. And that’s kind of my theory. So where I cross the A22 it is not clear when whizzing by in a car that a path exists there. So do people see something ghostly or is it someone from Tillingdown popping out after dark to the shops in Caterham Valley for a load of bread and pint of milk? - we may never know!! 😁
Hi! I didn't know about the tea rooms. 👍 And as I have just come across your🤳❤ channel and subscribed, have you done the full story yet? If so, can you leave the link to that video here please, thank you.
Hi there and thank you for subscribing! Here is the link, it is the full story of the 1937 Typhoid outbreak and basically the tea rooms were shut down on the back of what happened, hope you enjoy it: ruclips.net/video/adLqTrxL7EE/видео.html

Sorry to have missed the live Phil happy Christmas
Thanks, you too!
I only dropped by for a look because I have in my possession a post card from the barracks dated November 1914. It is hand written to my Grandfather.
Wow, a very special item indeed.
Thanks Phil another good one I hadn’t seen before, when you came along the perimeter fence at Leaves Green my uncle used to work at Leaves Green farm there were apparently a few crash sites that were marked & one from an airshow in the 1970’s
Ooh I didn’t know that - thanks for the info
I lived on the border SE25. We shopped in Croydon town centre every Saturday without fail, went to the little Sainsbury’s in the Whitgift to do our weekly shop, this was way before they built the one at Crystal Palace FC. Perhaps pop to M&S, Beaties model shop, BHS, Allders, Turtles and Littlewoods. I so looked forward to it, we grabbed a coffee in Pontis on the top floor. Got my first job at Leon house and my sister worked at Tabener house, parents friend worked at Segas, amazing how st George walk went straight through the middle like a tunnel.. i liked sitting in the town hall gardens with my lunch. It’s amazing how much mileage you can do walking around just taking in the sights. Love these videos you do! Good work 👍🏻
Thanks, great to read your Croydon memories, it was easy to spend a large chunk of the day in town many years ago - now sadly there is little to justify a trip, although I regularly visit the library and archives area in Katherine St for my research.
It used to be great to shop there at xmas, but now it is dead, especially the whitgift centre. I remember as a carpenter apprentice working on the forum pub, long gone
Hi Phil interesting video, did you know that was the original old Tithepit shaw road you were walking on before the new road was constructed in 1961 , my parents knew people who used it all the time to get between Whyteleafe & Hamseygreen, I believe it’s the longest surviving peace of original roadway in Surrey 👍
I thought it may have been but hadn’t checked out the detail/story so thanks for that. They are currently resurfacing the current road - long overdue!
I used to work in Delta point, and the NLA tower.....oh and dixons in the whitgift. I've seen my home town run into the ground. I'd love to leave.
This brings back some memories. I used to live in Westmore Road during the mid to late 70's.Tatsfield Rovers FC used to play at Furze Corner on the approach road, the Scout hut was over the road from there. My late father used to go to the working men's club by the pond. The Post Office used to be at the end of the row of shops and the village policeman was Dick Dredge, used to live in the Police house by the village hall.
I’m planning a part two so will aim to cover some of those additional sites you mention 👍🏻
@@philswallow My younger half brother attended the original village school on Church Hill Road, which you've covered I see. I certainly remember the late David Scarboro, he was a friend of my sister along time ago. His family were really nice people. It seems just like yesterday.
Another great video thank you Phil, I can remember going down Surrey street with my mum an dad in a Saturday morning, you couldn't move it was shoulder to shoulder and all the stall holders calling out prices of their produce, the smell of the fresh fruit and veg, aah happy memories and do you remember there used to be a Turtles ironmongery shop on spurgeons bridge a smaller version of the one in park street.
Thanks Barry, I only remember the one in Park St, a superb store!
Looks like the allotments have gone. Steve Stimson used to live on Church Lane, me & Stan Todd lived on Ward Lane, Dennis lived on Crewes Lane. Love the video!
So many good memories are in my mind when I cover the old ground!
Another great video mate, well put together. So many memories of half my life in Warlingham with visits to Godstone, Woldingham, Caterham, etc, before moving to California. I think Dave Skinner's brother Don, was the landlord of The White Hart for a time in the late 1980's, he bought my old white Ford Consul 2.5 (cheap version of the Granada). Keep up the good work!!!
Thanks Andy 👍🏻
And I remember Heathrow being just a bunch of nissan huts.
Thanks for the updated video of Croydon.I spent a lot of time in West Croydon in the 1960's. Mum went to Tavistock school. I remember Kennards. Didnt know why Fairfield Halls was called that thanks for the info!
Wow! How it's changed. Lots of comments below I can associate with. Phil, do you remeber the clothes shop on the left as you exited West Croydon bus station, the one that used to sell all the skinhead and punk clothes? What was that called? Remember getting green flight jackets, sta-press trousers etc there. I used to work in Randolph House (now gone), at the top end of the bus station, on the 8th floor and remember watching the explosions in the train station yard one day when a whole load of propane gas canisters caught fire!!! Also worked in Edridge road alongside the flyover, in a building called Impact House (worked for BT). Is that still there? You seemed to turn off just before it.
I vaguely remember the shop, hopefully someone else may know. I found this about Impact House: valcan.co.uk/projects/impact-house-croydon/
Thanks for another lovely video, Phil; there were so many places I knew from my childhood and teenage years in this one. I'd completely forgotten about the Swap Shop until you mentioned it, and I also remember there was a Rank bowling alley around that area too, at least in the mid-late 60s. The Tamworth Halls building was a Croydon Tech annex in the early 70s, where I went after I refused to go to Trinity any more (which you mentioned as being moved to Shirley Park). You didn't show a building opposite the Halls that I found on Google Maps as I was following your walk--there's what looks like a residence faced in brown and green tiles, and that was a pub (The Tamworth Arms?). I love the nostalgia fix I get from these... I'm 5,000+ miles from Croydon, and 50 years from my life there, but your videos bring the memories flooding back.
I remember the Tamworth Arms, closed in 2015: whatpub.com/pubs/CRO/11559/tamworth-arms-croydon
Fascinating how its changed. Used to get my haircut at that barbers in Surrey St and hated swimming at Scarbrook Rd baths with the school! Loved the Swapshop, Kennards Arcade and the Model shop in St Georges walk.
That model shop was something else, although Arthur who ran the newsagents in the top parade at Hamsey Green was a brilliant model maker and supplied them there, too
Same with the haircut!! Got my first skinhead crop there and was scared to go home. 45 years later and I have a natural skinhead now :)
ah great... another video from my favorite channel...
Cheers mate, thank you for your support!
I see that Sanderstead Library has now closed. Such a tragedy. I'd like to tell this story here because I don't suppose that it will ever matter anywhere else. Growing up in Sanderstead (more like South Croydon - Mayfield Road to be exact) in the 60s, 70s, early 80s, the library was central to my life. I went every week, at least, either on the 403 bus or walking up Sanderstead Road, and in the school holidays I spent hours there. To me, at the time, it seemed like a huge building, which held all the books in the world! OK, so I was a swot, or a nerd, or whatever we would say now, but I loved it. Years later, and I became a Professor at Cambridge University and, you know what, I don't suppose I'd ever have gone down the path that got me there without Sanderstead Library. And now it's gone, and no one else will have that particular path.
It’s tragic Chris, I remember our Dad taking us there when we were young. Awful situation.
@@philswallow Maybe I saw you there, back in the day! Anyway, here's an idea for another video, which I'd love to see if you fancied making it: how about Sanderstead Station and Parade (taking in what used to be Mrs Dunbar's cake shop, Smith's newsagents, Yeo's sweet shop, Hooker & Rogers estate agents, and on down the main road with Barclays and Midland Banks, the post office, the hardware shop, to Cullen's grocers) and then on down past Wilson's garage and then past the Rec and the left and Ede's shoe shop etc on the right, finishing maybe at the Red Deer on the London-Brighton Road?
@chrisgrey9756 maybe! Yes I must do that area, see my South Croydon ones as I’ve touched on the Red Deer area a couple of times
Another great video. I was interested by the mention of Norfolk House, which is where I had my first job after leaving school in 1983 (I worked for Noble Lowndes, which, as Noble Lowndes Partners, at one stage gave its name - NLP - to the Eggbox Tower by East Croydon station). But I'm not clear if it was on your 1950s map? In my memory, based on its style, it had been built in the 1930s, but I'd be interested to know.
Thanks Chris. The “Thrupenny Bit Building” was built in the early 70s, design work started in 1964. It looks like it will be converted to flats with no external alterations.
@@philswallow Thanks, Phil, but, sorry, I didn't make myself clear. The Eggbox/ Thrupenny Bit/ NLP building is one thing. But I was asking about Norfolk House (on Wellesley Road), where Noble Lowndes used to have an office - do you know when that was built? Cheers, Chris.
@@chrisgrey9756 sorry! It is there on the 1967 version of the map so built at some point in the 12 years after the reference map I used - hope that helps!
@@philswallow Thanks, Phil. I reckon Norfolk House was a good bit older than that. It was very Art Deco in style, which is why I thought 1930s, but it could have been 50s. BTW while I'm writing (though it should be a post on your Hamsey Green video), I knew the Leathwoods/ JET garage there very well. My dad was Ken Leathwood's garage forecourt manager and I did weekend/ holiday work there when I was at school in the 1980s. You'll now, of course, that the Leathwood family had a chain of garages around Croydon.
Wonderful video , Phil. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I left Croydon for Canada in early 1967 at 22 years of age, having been born & raised in East Croydon. Your videos bring back so many memories, & I can’t believe how much the town has changed. Not always for the better I have to say! I do look forward to all your videos. Thank you again 🫶🏻
Thanks Susan, glad you enjoy them, they are fun to make! 😊
Thanks for the video and all the memories (now 73) in age roaming around croydon as a kid .i lived in new addington from 1954 to 2007,thanks again Peter clark
It’s all about the memories, Peter!
Lovley memories, taberner house as was my head office, worked for Croydon council for over 40 years as maintainance carpenter joiner. Lived in croydon from 1952 to 2008(peter Clark)
Wow! That was a walk back in time for me.Lived down in West Croydon and used to walk into town. Used to as a family go to the Working Men's Club in Scarbrook Road ....and Where's the flower stall gone from Surrey St by the steps.? ....So much has changed so Thank You for your video.😊
Very interesting video, thanks. I really don't recognise most of the streets from my youth in late 50s to mid 60s. In fact the only parts I knew were the Fairfield Hall and Surrey Street. I used to travel in by bus from Wallington originally arriving at West Croydon Station and knew Kennards well. Then as a teenager, having moved to Purley, came in via South Croydon. Think I would get completely lost if I visited now!
Very informative video. My, my, Croydon’s changed a lot even since 2017, when I changed jobs and moved away. What time of the day were you filming? I’m assuming it was a week day. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Andrew. I filmed it on a Wednesday morning from around 11-12:30.
Excellent video...👍.
Many thanks Phil. It's interesting to see how much Croydon has changed. It's got nicer modern apartments which have replaced some of the old depressing areas that used to be there. I remember the Winderloaf factory and the smell of fresh bread.
Yes, the smell!!
Thank you very much for this walk Phil how croydon has changed 😮.
Watching another great video, i remember the buses going right through Croydon.I got the 409 to Godstone and got off at St Lawrence's hosp where i worked
Always used to be an event coming to Croydon as a child. Surrey street kennards and lunch in BHS. As a teenager I was often to be found browsing in Beanos. Saw many films at the odeon. Happy days.
Thank you for the video. We used to live in Centrillion Point (just near where you started and finished). A refurbished Office block which was reclad again following the fire in Grenfell tower block. Our GP was located along Friends Road, and we used to walk in the nearby park opposite the magistrates court. There were often smartly dressed but strangely nervous people milling around outside.
Loved it Phil brought back memories. I’ve got loads of stories about Croydon from working in there for 30 years with Croydon Council. I must ring you up and send you some photographs of what we’ve done in the highways department in Croydon. I’ll come up and get some pictures out the loft. Jeff. Ps. I’ve got some pictures of when I helped put in the plane down on the pearly Way. At Croydon Airport.
Cheers mate, I’d love to see them, I’m happy to do high quality scanning here if that works
I found that very sad. So many good memories. I was born and raised in Waddon and some things the video reminded me of were swimming in Croydon baths as a kid in the 60's. I always remember the outside baths was always closed. I heard it got hit by a bomb in WWII, don't know how true that is. Surrey Street market, always busy and noisy, Frenchies seafood stall where dad used to buy us eels. The Swap Shop, brilliant place as a kid, so many interesting things. I did my apprenticeship at Croydon College and had my 21st birthday party at Ruskin House. I also remember the Wonderloaf factory. I used to love Croydon and, as a biker, spent many hours in the Cartoon. Unfortunately I also remember the inside of Croydon Police station, don't ask! I watched Croydon deteriorate from a pleasant place to one where it just seems over developed with incredibly ugly buildings which tower over everything, horrible. I got to the stage where I really didn't like it anymore and now live in Cornwall. Like I said, sad.
I know what you mean, but I’m glad I marked off some of our mutually similar memories from years ago!
Its a shame alot of our local pubs are disappearing
Nice to see the picket fence I built is still standing outside those beautiful cottages
Great video phil, (Peter Clark) it's my daughters site i haven't changed my name my phone went up the creek
Memories flooding back of journeys into Croydon on the green London Country 403 bus
That’s the one, although it’s red these days
My late father worked as a conductor on that route (before it all went one-man)!!!
I have a vague recollection that the building you point out as South Bank University (at the 9 min 58 secs position) was once a retail shop called (I think) House of Holland ? Or International House of Holland ? Can’t quite recall 100% . Does anyone else remember that or did I dream it 😂!?
I think you may be right, Chris. I had forgotten about it until I read your comment!
Do you remember the name of the shop exactly ? I recall it was a bit like habitat with home furnishings but also some outside garden furniture etc .
BT did occupy Delta Point , certainly in the mid to late 80’s and possibly into the 90’s for sure . That was where us engineers went to get our towing fee cheque if we were ever careless with parking the BT van . Happened to me once 😬
I think it was that or maybe Holland House?
I was back in Croydon last week. I walked from East Croydon train station to Mitcham Road Cemetery and back and enjoyed the nostalgia. It seemed like Croydon was on the mend, and I got that impression from this video as well. BTW have you come across the Aerial Photo Explorer on Historic England's website? There are plenty of historic views of this area taken from the air that show how it was, particularly in the 1940's. The oblique photos (rather than the top down) are particularly striking - click on the purple lozenges to access them. I have discovered images of my old primary school and my sister's and even one of the prefab where I was born. One of the best things about them is spotting people going about their everyday affairs - it's a great way of taking a walk through the past and would complement a video such as this very well.
Thanks Ralph. I’ve only looked at the top-down, will check back on the other views, thank you. They often have restrictions on use but fair use for educational purposes may be ok.
