    great chat guys ,
i will come at Tottenham's recruitment dilema from left field a bit ,
all roads lead to net xg goals , that is xg for v xg against . in predicting outcomes in a football match , its reasonably accurate at around 70%+ , and infact more accurate than some of the algorithms being used these days.
the late season losses were entirely predicted by tottenhams net xg form .
man c won the league with a net xg of 1.2 goals . and only man c , liverpool and arsenal had a positive net xg over 1 . spurs finished 7th in the net xg league . to put this in perspective , the closer we get to a net xg of 1.5 goals or below , the more the laws variance can impact on the game .
variance is, things like var , deflections , own goals , set play, and for me , transition tactics. so even man c only have to be down a fraction in performance levels , and they drop points. so if you are tottenham , and you are generating a measly xg differential of around .15 , you are in the lap of the gods , because you are just not generating enough chances relative to the possession and you can get sucker punched in transition or set play by anyone . spurs were in the top 3 for possession , they may actually be ranked 1, so fair value says , spurs should have won the league or atleast finish top 3.
whats this got to do with recruitment.
well the tactical response to anges tottenham in the main has been compress the field, man mark the mid 5 based on triggers , generate turnovers and hit on the counter, and pinch goals off set pieces . . the evidence from this season is , that the risk taking mind set isnt there , and even if it was , tottenham dont have enough chance creation potential in the current squad to succeed against the tactics thrown against them.
so the list as it is and the back ups per position , are almost irrelevant .
right now , only son , maddison, johnson, richarlison, werner , lo selso , and solomon before he got injured , would make the cut . porro , edogie , kulu , bentancur , sarr and bissouma miles off it in terms of chance creation .
only 2 mids on my list making the grade , and spurs might be losing one of them , so spurs need a few iniesta or javi type clones in midfield , highly mobile with good feet , that can wriggle their way around and cause trouble for compressed defenses through speed with the ball .
bottom line , totenham have to recruite players that have a track record of generating between .5 to 1 in assists + goals per 90 mins , in midfield, in strong leagues . man c had 3 or 4 this season , spurs only had 1 playing enough minutes, and purely based off the data , if i was lo celso , i would be mighty urked . get 2 more xg creating machines in midfield , and things start to happen.
i would also be looking for one of two forwards that can really press. spurs were right up there in their pressing stats , but the league is so good, that it still wasnt enough to stop spurs being the victim of transition ops far too many times .
if i was ange , i would go and hire kyogo furahashi at celtic to terrorise all the centerbacks in the epl . makes richarlisons movement in and around box look very ordinary .
under anges system, spurs are going to leak goals on the counter, so ange and spurs need to double down on getting players that will make spurs a chance creation juggernaut with all the possession spurs are generating .
remember spurs out performed their net xg league position , so there is considerable downside risk in spurs going backwards in the league , if they dont double down in recruiting players , particularly midfielders that create xg
the other elephant in the room , is whether the coaching staff ange inherited can cut it , and follow his plan . the back office as it is , hasnt been able to win the battle of wills with the players , you can see that on the field . as someone who has analysed angeball for many years , what i saw from spurs most of this season wasnt angeball , and it only got worse as the season went on when the rest of the league started throwing blocking tactics at spurs, so i think a back office overhaul is more important than the squad overhaul, if he is to get more upside from the existing squad, and i think ange knows this .
anyway , that will do for today ,
    cheers , mahaish

Cheers Maharishi. As always, you provide serious food for thought with your clinical and detailed analysis. I wonder if the staff personnel adjustments will be made in addition to squad overhaul? Assuming Ange shares your viewpoint, then one would assume he will be looking to implement these changes asap.
It’s interesting that you pick out Kyogo as a worthy option for improving our attack. I suspect many supporters would be skeptical based on the sole fact doing it in Scotland is a totally different reality. I do like him however and could see that add something without breaking the bank.
      Thanks again👍🐓🤍

Good Morning Gents greetings from Sydney. Looking at the potential players leaving and revenues that Spurs have set aside taking into account FP rules. What do you consider will be the amount of funds available for new players in this window? I see this figure will influence the types of players we go for.

Stopped playing Football Manager years ago and only watch Spurs and Major International Tournaments, so I have no idea who is considered a wonderkid, who is highly rated, who most of the players people mention, are... Don't really know who I want, other than players who can play with the ball at their feet. Doesn't have to be a big name either. As long as they can play, you can nurture and develop the rest. When I watch players like Richarlison, Johnson for example, when the ball goes to them, it looks like they immediately panic, have a poor touch and the body shape and technique is just lacking. Control non existent. Composure to receive it, lacking. Teams that win stuff, don't usually contain many players that only have 3-7 good games a season and most of that being down to not truly having that natural ability that was commonplace in different eras. I see more thoroughbreds now, who just cover ground and fall over at the slightest touch, rather than technical geniuses. Any player that can receive it, trap it, control it, take a touch, look up and use it, is a step up on Richie. That's just my personal opinion of course. Love the guy otherwise. He's got the passion, but he runs and technics like a donkey.

If you look at the outgoing players, there is a big reduction in wage bill after Kane, Dier, Lloris, Hojbjerg, Lo Celso, Davies, Persic are gone. Spurs can offer Kyle Walker-Peters a good wage to boost the club grown quota. Marcus Edwards is another club grown player. It makes sense to swap Solomon for Edwards. Replacing a foreign player with a club grown player. (Austin or Whiteman, Skipp, KWP, Edwards)

Ben Davies should be sold. His contract expires in 2025. Ange's system requires the defenders to be comfortable with the ball. He is not.
