Japanese curry is a marvelous thing.
It's easy to make, requiring very little work
It can be made in bulk (good for big families)
it can be made with just about any combination of ingredients

Waking up at 5 am is unironically so nice. You get time to wake up and get fully ready for the day and you'll most likely have time to do something you want to do before taking care of whatever responsibilities you have.

@@Redx6504Meh one day is fine depending on the weather.
@@KhanMann66not even one day
Japanese here! When making curry, we generally let it sit for a few days for the flavors to get better. We have a phrase in Japan “二度目が美味しい”, meaning it’s always better on the second day.
Believe it or not this is a saying in English too about dishes where the flavors incorporate over time
Yeah I do that too. Like lasagna
What do you mean let it sit for days?
@@Chiburrotube I would guess they mean leaving it in the fridge for a while. Leaving it out would probably let the flavours blend a bit faster, but that'd also lead to random food poisoning incidents (unless there's something in the blocks of curry that is such a powerful preservative that the meat stays edible long term, which is possible I suppose). As hellothisiskyle said, this isn't exclusive to Japanese food, more an inherent quality of soups and stews and a few other things - basically anything where the flavours get a chance to mix together over time.
In South Africa as well. Things always taste better on the second day😊
This looks like a traditional stew my grandad use to make- I love how cultures blend in ways we never thought
Funny enough, the most popular origin story is that it came to Japan through the British navy, as a stew.
That’s because it is a stew. The block she added to it thickens it to make it a “curry”

Chef tip: to level up the curry just a little, sauté your carrots with an onion and a little celery, it will add some depth. Also add a tomato before adding water, it will add a layer of richness and sweetness to the ‘stock’
Also tomato and celery both contain naturally occurring MSG so they both add a lotttttt of flavour!
Also also cutting up the curry cubes into little pieces really does help it dissolve so well! And Japanese curry cubes are fairly mild so they’re good for anyone who can’t handle spice.
Also Japanese curry base and basic recipe is realllllly perfect for curried sausages!

One way to up your Japanese curry game: use two different brands of curry. Each brand kinda differs from one another (one being sweeter, or stronger curry flavor, more apple forward, more umami forward, etc). You can also grate an apple or add honey or add things like apple butter if you want a more complex sweetness. Also deglaze with red wine or beef stock or both or add instant espresso or a few pieces of 80% dark chocolate for a much richer flavor. Its crazy how well they go together.
You want Japanese curry so bad
Whats the right time to add the grated apple? Is it when I’m sautéing the meat and vegetables or when I add water/stock to let everything soften?
Great tips! Also some people like to add any combination of dashi, soy sauce, oyster sauce, worcestershire sauce, mirin or sake.

I LOVE Japanese curry! I have IBD and IBS and can't have anything spicy. (I got hospitalized multiple times by "not spicy" dishes)
Japanese curry is perfect! It's not spicy at all and I just throw in veggies that don't upset my stomach 😊 I usually use root veggies (potatoes, carrots, burdock, turnip etc) and some greens like kale, broccoli or peas. I recently discovered a type of mushroom that doesn't upset my stomach (oyster mushrooms!), so I'll be trying using those in the near future!
I usually use diced chicken breast instead of ground beef.
And look you said, I eat it with rice until I finish the pot! And if I'm unable to do so, I freeze the curry in portions. Then I whip up some rice and heat up the defrosted curry on the stove. It's a wonderful easy meal!
Oh good, I wasn't sure if it would freeze well and if you could reheat it on the stove because most people talk about reheating it in a microwave, which I don't have. Thanks!
I’m glad you described the flavors! It looks so good but I don’t do spicy very much. It seems worth a try ❤
@@brandon3872 for stove reheating, just go low and slow with some extra water, you don’t want to overcook it or burn it just defrost. Also you can pull it out of your freezer the night before and let it defrost on your sink, or 24hrs and defrost in the fridge.

-Instant coffee, about 2 teaspoon

The brand of curry roux you use also changes how easy it is to make! I find the brand you used (Vermont Curry) is 1) the sweetest (that's why it's my favourite ahahah) and 2) the easiest to dissolve into hot water. Golden Curry is also a popular brand, but you're better off chopping the roux into smaller cubes or even grating it before you try to mix it in.

This is comfort food!!!!! 🤤
ご飯がハート型に盛ってあって、カワイイ❤️
When my can speak Japanese dad makes Japanese curry it’s usually finished in 10 minutes because I have 1 brother and 2 sister’s so there’s usually never enough some times for everyone in my family.
Best food to eat
My go to is always potatos, carrots, onions, and some stew meat chunks, always super easy to make and doesn't take too long either.
It's really good if you add peas too!
Very, very true!
Atp this is just a pot roast with a lil umami flavor
@@Dapperdopper take that back
@@RozyPoyo oh sorry it’s ground meat not chunks of roast. Still the texture, overall taste, and look of it are easily comparable to an American pot roast
