The Lexus LS 500 is one of the best luxury cars in the world. I've owned 2 Mercedes S class 1 Audi A8 and A BMW 7 Series, of the 3 models the BMW was the best. I've also had 2 Lexus Ls 600 ànd à 500 and I've never had any issues with Lexus as I'd experienced with the German cars. I've even recommended Lexus to friends who thought the S series was the best and they're totally for Lexus now. I think the problem is that Lexus don't advertise as the Germans, claiming they're the best in the world. But owning especially the S class shows up the unreliable cars made in Germany. You're only paying for the brand name when you buy Mercedes not for the superior quality and engineering as in owning A LEXUS ❤️♥️❤️

But why buy an AMG when you can buy a true Italian sports car? It's just a company that supes up Mercedes but I've seen privateers who've suped up their Mercedes and outperformed AMG. While living in Berlin, I'd been to a competition where 2 students placed a Porsche boater engine in a VW golf and called it AMG KILLER. There weren't any AMG that even ran close to it.

The interior visually is lagging the Germans, especially the S class but Lexus' interior quality exceeds that of the Germans. The Germans have a more stately look but the Merc's melted bar of soap look is boring at best. The face of the big Lexus looks like an angry Transformer or International diesel truck from the 70s and 80s that only a mother could love. A V6tt engine vs V8tt. Lexus advertising department needs to highlight the advantages it's products have over the Germans, like they did when they first launched the brand.

The older LS models were at the top with the previous models. Lexus ruled the 90's and early 2000'S. It is still a highly respected brand but the LS lost its way by getting rid of the V8. My personal opinion is Lexus took a hit in overall exterior design and styling when they decided to introduce their radically new looking wide mouth grill design.
All their cars started to look the same in 2013, with a strong emphasis on the front grill. I feel like Lexus tried to cut cost by utilizing features and styling they could share in most of the models. Cutting cost on a high-end car is not such a great idea when your paying luxury prices and your competitors (BMW and Mercedes) are eating your lunch.

Having owned two 1998 LS400 models over the years, the reason for the lack of recent sales success lies in the fact that it has become too bloated in size and too bloated on the wallet. In other words, it caught the old "Cadillac Disease" of the 1980s, and dropping two cylinders from the engine guillotined whatever appeal was left. Nice car, no soul, hole in wallet. Recipe for disaster. 😞

@@bobcraig3648 Agree Bob, however, can't replace the soul of a v8 with a v6, that's part of my point as to why sales fell off to nearly zero. This car lost its way becoming more Cadillac than BMW. For instance, would you rather have a 300 Chrysler series from the 50's or an Imperial from the late 60s/early 70s? We all know the answer. As the successor to the 300 series, although a nice luxo-cruiser, everyone would rather have the 300 series. There is always room for a driver-first dedicated luxury sport sedan, as opposed to this cruiser.

    • @taharqa332
      @taharqa332 2 года назад +3

No. The lack of sales is due to more options in the class on the market. There was no “Genesis” brand in the 80’s. Audi wasn’t very appealing in the “80’s” Cadillac has actually gotten “better”. The point is; Lexus has more competition and many ppl are gonna choose what they like aesthetically over “specs”; this is just fact. The S class is king (in my opinion) in this class (aside from the real big boys RR and Bentley) Lexus Is still the best bet for your dollar - Hands down!!! if your pockets are deep enough…MB can’t be touched. I own a LEXUS and it’s still going strong and looking good after 9 years. If we’re simply talking “Japanese” … Who else can hold a candle to Lexus (Toyota)??? No one.

8:28 PPL buying in this segment value brand. Perhaps a bit to much but there it is. The only remark I would make is engine and drivetrain options. The germans give you multiple options of both gas and hybrid, and sure you have what looks to be a good pallet of interior colors your locked in via trim, and ext color, and you don't get access to everything just a few. S Class give me flexibility. Porsche gives me flexibility and options. I can have a blue car with red interior! Looks great btw. Lastly they need to do more to make this look fresh. I get Lexus and Toyota, but damn give us a new face, new rear. You don't need to redesign from the ground up. But they are slow for that.

Probably styling, interior and exterior and perceived prestige. I think most Lexus cars need to do an interior makeover a la (current) Volvo or Genesis. Also, up the tech. I think there's no longer a need for V8s. Mercedes stresses the V6's too in their S class. Also, make an electric version (preferably on a bespoke, not shared plaform) as electrics are just faster, quieter and smoother than gas combustion engined cars. In this segment, transmission shifts try to be imperceptible, engine noise is trying to be quiet as possible and exhaust note isn't a feature. So electric makes more sense.

This is the most interesting LS since the original, design wise, but otherwise it's completely outclassed by the German competition. It doesn't have the smooth ride of the older models, or the V8 and the tech is years behind the competition. They tried to make sportier and failed. Not sure what is next for the LS, though I did read once that another facelift was coming. After that it's time to call it and switch over to an electric only LS. They lost the balance when they allowed the LS460 to go 10 years with no real changes while the Germans charged ahead.

Does this car have the new Teammate Drive Assist?? Supposed to be on the new LS. If it does, then you should’ve shown that.
Also being both a Lexus and Audi owner, I can tell you there are things the German do better in this segment- especially for the price range. The Lexus Infotainment controls, display, and camera is utter crap compared to the German. Navigation screens displays traffic in much too busy way. Until Teammate Driver Assist come around, Lexus dynamic cruise control is much worst than equivalent Germans… start/stop too jerky. All wheel steering missing. Matrix and laser headlights missing. Night vision missing. Front, Rear, and Bird’s Eye view camera is very poor quality. No 3D rendering model view. And I would say speed and handling, but Lexus LS wasn’t meant for that.

    HALO EFFECT...more about this later...
Lexus definitely has reliability going for it...but when you talk about luxury, it looks a bit cramped in the back of that LS.
Even in the Mercedes S-Class, it is a bit cramped to use calf rests. Not surprising, Mercedes dropped that option from their regular S-Class sedans and now only offer it for the Mercedes-Maybachs which have an additional 8 inches in rear leg room. When they did have it for the regular S-Class, the calf-rest was only for the rear passenger side...never on the rear driver's side passenger seat.
The rear entertainment screens are nice but seems a little ornamental in today's world where everyone has their own phone and/or tablet.
Still, just like Mercedes S-Class, the screens look good and can be used in a pinch. Can you plug in external sources to the screens?
Disappointing to not see a 4-seat option...if you are talking about luxury, nothing is more luxurious than having a 4-seat option and having your seat physically separated from the other seat by a center console.
So, why is Lexus at the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to luxury sedans?
Simple. They purposefully positioned themselves that way.
Along with brands like Genesis, the Lexus just doesn't offer enough. They are just...blah...meh...plain Jane...
They "click all the boxes" but don't offer any passion to the owner.
Lexus and Genesis are dragged down by their own lower tier "near-luxury" offerings whereas high-end Mercedes bring up their lower-tier cars. This is essentially the "halo effect".
The last Lexus that I saw that almost rivaled Mercedes was the LS 600h L. It had pretty much everything that you could get in a Mercedes S-Class...for about the same price. This was the first and only Lexus sedan I seriously considered.
OK, technically it was a hybrid, but it did churn out 400+hp from the V8 and electric motor...so, horsepower...check.
    Acceleration...check.
    AWD...check.
    Rear reclining seats...check.
4-seat option with rear center console...check.
Keyless option (back in 2007, not that common)...check.
Long wheelbase (comparable to S-Class and A8L)...check.
    Premium surround sound system...check.
Everything was checked but while it was comfortable to drive, it didn't really offer much more than a regular LS.
Perhaps it didn't sell well enough, quick enough, or perhaps Lexus (Toyota) rethought their strategy and decided to go a different way instead of waiting it out, but that was the one and only car that had the potential to compete with the Mercedes S. Had they continued on that line, they might have developed the Lexus brand into the upper echelons of the luxury market.
I found a quote that sums up the LS600h L...
"There's plenty to admire about the Lexus hybrid LS600hL. It's a beautifully made, sumptuously equipped, highly refined super sedan that Japan can be proud of. But then, exactly the same can be said for the normal Lexus LS460 which is cheaper and lighter, almost as economical in the real world and doesn't have the LS600h's fearsomely complex AWD hybrid system to drag around (and maintain). The LS600h is a technical tour de force, no question, and all about Lexus making a statement, especially to the Germans. Trouble is, the hybrid part really works around town. It's expensive, boring and sterile to drive and I'd wager a Euro diesel would go close for running costs and emissions. Driver appeal? Don't ask." - Wheels Magazine
So, Lexus decided to play it safe and just compete in the lower luxury tiers....they positioned their premier flagship model (the LS) right between the E-Class and the S-Class.
High-end cars bring more desirability to lower-tier cars. People might not be buying a Mercedes-Maybach or a GT-Black Series...but they are getting a Mercedes and can have pride in that.
Imo, both the Lexus LS and Genesis are slightly better than E-Class/A6 but not quite at S-Class/A8L.
I don't care for Bimmers and won't even consider them. A new BMW i7 is coming out...but the specs don't look very promising (240mile range?).
Audi is still great. Perhaps they wanted to bring in a hybrid version of the V8 to meet EPA standards, but whatever the delay, it is not available. You can only get the V6 version right now.
Even when there was a V8, there was less customization available when compared to Mercedes.
And Audi has a very basic design that hasn't changed much in the last decade and a half. This is a plus (for me) but also a negative (for many others). Many like to have their new car look...new...not look too similar to the previous model. I know. My D3 didn't look out of date when the D4 was released. I now have a D4 and there isn't much difference to the current D5. Hell, outside the grille, even the D3 doesn't look very different from the D5. If the market wasn't so crazy and a V8 option was available, I would upgrade my D4 for a D5.
That leaves Mercedes at the top of the market. Their cars are luxurious, have great fit/finish, and have the latest tech...tech that is destined to filter down to not only other Mercedes, but just as likely to other cars. Take a look at the Smart Key. I remember that on my S500 back at the turn of the century. I thought it was a bit gimmicky at first but quickly warmed up to the convenience of it. Now, EVERY car has a smart key...
Then there are airbags and anti-lock brakes. Mecedes didn't pioneer this tech but were the first to offer them on their S-Class sedans before filtering down that tech to their other models. Not surprisingly, other car companies followed suit.
In Mercedes models of today, I see the augmented drive assistance and MBUX totally connected infotainment system as something that will become ubiquitous in future cars. They still have reclining seats in the Maybach and that probably won't filter down...and the rear wheel steering will likely be confined to large luxury vehicles...
Mercedes has the luxury market locked down...regular luxury with the S560 and now S580, sport luxury with the S63 and S65 (not out yet for the current generation), ultra-luxury with the Mercedes-Maybach. They have something for everyone at pretty much all price points (from $100k to $200k+) ... and something for everyone from $30k to $100k too. There are so many options...luxury, sports, mixed...
They have also made a true luxury EV with the EQS line.
Yes, there is Rolls and Bentley but those are essentially a different category. They draw much more attention than a Mercedes, which to many buyers is actually a turn-off. That is to say, Mercedes offers just the right amount of luxury and brand recognition to not make them overtly ostentatious. This is what makes my Mercedes-Maybach so nice. People quite often mistake it for a regular Mercedes S-Class. I am more than content with that. I didn't buy the car for other people...I bought it for my comfort and people gawking and wanting pictures is...not comfortable. Considering I have two other S-Class sedans...no one blinks an eye when I drive in to work with the Maybach. All three of the cars are just different versions of black...obsidian black, platinum black, and matte black (graphite grey magno). Only an astute observer would notice the differences in the cars and the differences in the color. OK, actually the matte black is noticeable...but it still looks like a regular Mercedes to most people.
    * I traded in my Lexus for the Maybach. The Lexus was great and felt comfortable until I took a long trip in it. Every time I drove for more than half an hour straight, I would be a little sore. If it drove for 2 hours or more...then things started getting numb. I never had this issue with any other car and it didn't matter which seat I was in (whether driving or being a passenger). The seats just didn't work for me...it just wasn't as supple and comfortable as my S-Class sedans or A8L for long hauls. OTOH, I have a family friend who simply loves Lexus. He has 4 of them (or is it 5?) and couldn't be happier...though for the last year, I've caught him enjoying his new Tesla more. Still, I don't think he'll ever get rid of his Lexus'.

I have owned Mercedes E class, 3 Audis, and VW Passat. Nothing ever broke on Passat except for parking sensors would go crazy when is raining and I put 100k miles on it before i sold it. Audi was great, pretty much regular maintenance but drives great and has amazing all wheel drive. Mercedes felt like a rip off, all the dashboard buttons are made out of cheapest plastic, they rattle and look bad. 4matic was not doing well in snow, it was sliding left and right. Quattro is WAY BETTER! I would never buy Mercedes again. I think VW is one of the Best Buys if you are on a budget, Audi is a great car but depreciate a lot and parts are expensive. Thinking about getting new A8 but started being interested in Lexus. I will have to drive one and see how it feels. I know they are more reliable and cheaper than Audi but some things are a bit outdated like infotainment system, design, etc.. would love to hear from somebody who owned both Audi and Lexus.

It is important to read the entire information. All companies are trying to reduce the capacity of the engines in order to save fuel due to the economic and petroleum wars and the high prices. For example, German companies have more than 4 cylinder engines, 6 cylinders, 8 cylinders, 12 cylinders, but Japan does not have this obsession. They want to use luxury cars of quality. And practical technology that will live with you for twenty to 30 years, the best German cars are the models of the nineties in terms of quality and practicality, but their spare parts are expensive compared to Lexus, and most companies turn to hybrids and fully electric motors due to the wars of the economy and the reduction of carbon emissions and environmental pollution.
