  • A Mechanic reviews the 2023 Lexus LS500h to see how is it doing in 2023. The Lexus LS launched Lexus into the world but with an ever changing world of cars and the general heading towards SUVs. Is this flagship sedan that once was the greatest Lexus to buy still good in 2023?
    In this video we do a full technical review of the 2023 Lexus LS500h. We talk about some the engine, the transmission and the hybrid system.
    Then we take a look underneath it. A look inside and outside. Some things I don't like about it then finally is this still the flagship sedan that launched Lexus into the world? or is it a fading memory of the past?

    We have owned several Lexus cars over the years. 2 LS400s 2 IS300s 2 IS250s 1 CT200h 1 ES300h currently a 2005 LS430 and a 2004 GX470. The LS430 to me is the best car ever built and the 2019 ES300h was an amazing vehicle 50mpg and very good comfort and space. You could hide 2 bodies in the trunk. Why they didn't carry that over to the LS I don't know. The Lexus LS typically caters to an older age demographic. I recently purchased my second LS (2022), and age 48 I truly believe I was the youngest customer in the dealership. The average LS buyer loves the vehicles simplistic interior and somewhat basic functionality. LS purchasers remain loyal to this sedan for its reliability, comfort & smooth ride. Not an abundance of personal settings, multiple infotainment features or niche gadget's (I haven't viewed/changed my LS's settings since the first week of purchase.)
    Although I miss the V8, the twin turbo V6 has surprisingly quick acceleration and to me most importantly is quiet.

      It's appeal to older folks is because they've bought cars over the years and have realized that when you purchase something that significantly depreciates as soon as you drive it off the lot, you want something that is reliable. Only younger folks buy the cars that are pretty and shiny with all the bells and whistles is because they haven't had years of wisdom and experience of dealing with the maintenance on a depreciating product. Older folks know Lexus is a luxurious vehicle that they can drive for a decade with minimal issues. You're not getting that with a Land Rover or a German car.

    Interested in an LS(for a second vehicle)so to get a feel for them I test drove a 2012 LS460 with 178,000 miles and it was as tight and solid as the day it left Japan! Amazingly smooth and serene. My salesman and the sales manager told me the new ones are nothing like the older ones. People who trade up to a new one want their older ones back. It’s sad Lexus is going backwards with their flagship. It started everything and now there is no more of the “relentless pursuit of perfection” for the LS😢.

    very good and informative video! I should've seen such one before I bought my LS500h three years ago! But ... Mr.CarCareNut,I have a very simple and maybe silly question: Can you explain to me, if you please, how come LS500h sold in the USA, model 2018 can be upgraded with Apple Car Play and her, in Europe, it is kind of taboo to ask about this upgrade? How come? Why? What is the difference in those cars? Thanks in advance and have a nice day 🥳

    I think the LS430 was the last car that Lexus used to go after the big European sedans. The LS430 is one of the best sedans ever built regardless of price. However, the market was changing and Lexus changed with it. You have to fish where the fish are. SUV's and CROSSOVERS were growing in sales. Lexus also had a reputation of building boring cars in Europe so Lexus tried to address this with more performance. One of the biggest mistakes Lexus made with the LS 500 is they did not offer a V8 engine. In the LC500 coupe you got a 5.0 liter V8. This is a great engine. In the LS 500 you could only get a V6. The V8 should have at least been an option. I agree with you. The LS 500 is an after thought. It's a shame because if you look at the LC500 you immediately say, what a fantastic car. This proves that Lexus can make the LS great again they just need the will to do it. Cheers!!!

    • @f2john

      That's been my thought. Put that wonderful v8 from the lc500/is500 into the LS and call it a LS-F.

      The market didn't change, Lexus changed course with the LS. The S-Class, A8 and 7-Series are still what they were years ago. The 5L n/a V8 wouldn't have been a good fit for this car, you need a proper TT V8 with more torque to move a car like this.

    But you know so much about cars and good design.
    You ability to explain it in simple term is outstanding.
    Wonder what kind of car you would design if you were chief designer.
    I guess this car would go without issues for 500k miles,
    if not "neclected", lol.

    As owner of an ‘02 LS430 and a ‘20 LS500, I can understand some of the criticisms, but do find the LS500 to be a much better handler than the LS430. As for smoothness and ride, run flat tires are the culprit. You can always swap them for conventional tires as some owners have done.
    In all we are very satisfied with our LS500. Our LS430 lacks most of the safety features of the LS500 and that is where the current model excels.
    Power is another area where the LS500 dominates. 442 lb. Ft. of torque at 1,600 rpm is incredible. The 500 is a very fast car.

    • @jeanjackson1789

      We opted not to get the hybrid model. It is down on power, too expensive, and most of all has a ridiculously complicated transmission. Actually it has TWO transmissions.

    Absolutely brilliant unbiased review. Thank you. As an engineer of such vehicles, it must not have been easy to write that. I have been looking toward finally, heading towards my first LS. In many markets now only the hybrid is available. I am sold on Lexus for Japanese reliability, that brilliant interior Japanese design, it's smooth engine, quietness and most of all, that stonking good KIRIKO glass only available on top trim. However, ive had to make peace with the fact the hybrid is not silent and not smooth. This is a 7yr old car and Lexus are not pricing it attractively. It makes no sense financially, and at that price point, one shouldnt have to make compromises. I dont favor the other luxobarges because of their poor reliability. Nothing holds a candle to Lexus when it comes to flagship (yes they don't have the latest toys and peerless manmade materials sometimes, but that's reflected in price), but theyre not making it easy. Thank you for helping me decide against this. I'm either going for the top trim ES, or having to jump on a European luxobarge till Lexus are back in form.

    • @MercOne
      @MercOne 11 месяцев назад +2

      I don't see how you can say nothing holds a candle to Lexus' flagships, but you're jumping ship? Reflected in price? It's well over 100K loaded. That's just nonsense.

    • @am.6296
      @am.6296 10 месяцев назад

      @@MercOne why don't you read the argument and listen to the video before posting asinine comments? The CarNut, ie the Lexus guru, plainly says 'Lexus doesn't care about this car'. As I pointed out, Lexus do not seem to be charging appropriately for a 7yr old model. 100K is absolutely acceptable....if it were true. That's not what they charge in other parts of the world. In the UK it costs more than a new i7, in Hong Kong it costs the equiv. Of 360K USD in takumi trim, and in Australia it's full out of whack. 'Nonsense' because comprehension is apparently above you and your head is in the sand
