About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. We dream that someday we can transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

We bought a farmhouse in central Maine couple years ago, came with a big barn and attached garage with two bays that can fit 8 cars (!). The ease during winter of driving out with no snow to clear, and driving the tractor out to snowblow without having to clear snow off the tractor, is a thing to behold.

You should RE-Consider a concrete slab foundation for the barn. It is easy to keep sanitary with a broom & water hose, better for keeping feed dry, stops rats and other animals from borrowing tunnels underneath, creates a more air tight structure. Most importantly, it limits ground movement over the decades-long lifespan of your barn/investment. The foundation creates a situation where the expensive timber frames are more structurally sound for longer, way way longer. Having a weak or no foundation at all allows for exponentially shorter barn life. Once things begin to shift & settle, it can expose tiny openings in the outer metal sheathing and roof to allow the ingression of water which prematurely rots the expensive timber framing. Rot and weak spots in timber framing causes more shifting of the structure and changes in weight barring, which creates more tiny openings for water ingress, which creates more rot, more shifting...and etc. etc. It's a never ending cycle.
If you start with a rock solid timber frame construction, slab foundation, and quality metal sheathing your barn will last HUNDREDS of years. For sure, it will look brand new for the remainder of your lifetime as well as retain its re-sell value because it never becomes dilapidated.

I too have a giant old dairy barn that is a bank barn. I can put a lot underneath and my animals run in under there as well. Make sure that if you decide to put animals in your new barn, you make it easier for you to clean them out. If I were building a new barn, I’d have 3 drive through alleys front to back with dividers between them. You can drive through with a loader and clean them out. I wish there were more mobile butchers that would process on the farm

You are most likely getting advice from everyone, so I would like to add my 2cents worth . When the pad is built be sure to raise it about 12:" above the grade level to shed the water and snow melt . The only item of the plans I would challenge is the idea of having a door on the slope side of the roof, the snow will pile up against the door and eventually form an ice ridge which may cause water to come in the barn. the other suggestion I would do is to remove all the add-ons from the old barn making it into a BIG square nice old barn , and paint it. Best to you .

You mentioned trying to make the farm area look cleaner in another vid. Have you considered a trough system for the ducks’ water instead of dumping their water buckets on the ground?
Instead of attaching hoses to the spigot, slant a concave panel (wood, pvc) under it to flow into a trough. The trough would be low enough to the ground that the ducks can drink from it; wide enough they can swim in it (like they do the buckets); and long enough it can drain into the pond. Just put a stopper on one side you can lift up.
If you like it, you could build a min-silo near it for their food so you can just turn the switch for feed to flow into a sep, smaller trough.

The best decision my son and daughter in law made was putting a barn/shop built on their property. I moved to the farm to oversee the construction project, since I was retired and looking for a new place to live. The project included a nice, handicapped accessible small apartment built into the huge building. Guess where I moved when the project was completed? Yes, you are absolutely correct! I have loved living just steps away from my son’s family. I visit my grandkids almost every day and have watched them grow over the past few years. I hope Gold Shaw Farms gets as much use from their new structure as we have. We’ve done everything from sawmill cutting of timber to brewing beer and setting up a pitching machine for baseball practice- all done inside! And multiple holiday parties and my daughter’s wedding reception!

A greenhouse is a fantastic idea; you can have a garden all year instead of the small window of time you get in New England. Gonna put a woodstove in your workshop? My husband did that and so did our friend down the road; it makes it easier to work on stuff in the winter and keep your fingers from freezing up. (We're in NE CT in the woods). He also put a stereo in there so he can veg out when he's working on stuff. And yes, it doubles as a man cave. Or maybe in your case, Pablo can have his own crib and invite the ladies in....🐺🐈🐈🍁🌻

My dad had several bird/lizard baths around the farm house but as he got older there was one down the front that he had difficulty getting to and so, to make it easier for him we put a double faucet on a tap up on the side of the porch and ran a pipe down and into the bird bath. We had a switch like those that you have, and all he had to do was sit in his chair and reach down and turn that pipe switch. He’d wait until he heard the water start overflowing and then he’d turn the water off.
He absolutely loved it and thought it was such a great idea.
Watching those smaller birds come and go, while looking out the big front window gave him so much joy. He’d grab his binoculars and talk about the types of birds. I’d often sit there with him, it was great.

So even without any renewables in the mix, it would be a massive win.
And while I'm at it: About 95% of the battery (by weight) can be recycled (the rest is mostly plastics and glass fibre). To help in the bird areas and keep the mud down, could you check to see if a tree removal company could use your farm as a dumping ground for clean tree chips or mulch. Another RUclipsr did that for their garden and it work really well. The wood chips would absorb all the moisture from rain and waste from the birds.

Considering you have one EV and are considering another, I imagine you're looking into some kinda green tech to help power them? Might I make a suggestion and look into Harmony Wind Turbines? They're honestly going to revolutionize the game I feel. They have a patented wind turbine design that closes itself up in high wind speeds that normal turbines have to shut down or risk damage/destruction during, and can also catch slower winds that traditional turbines can't. They're still technically in R&D phase as they're now making a generator that works specifically with their turbines for a whole package deal, but in the near future they're very likely to be MASSIVE in the home/small scale power generation scene. And they're made of metal, not carbon fiber and such so they're very durable for a farm type setting. On another note, It's really cool to see shoulder cat back on not-a-cat person LOL
edit: posted this literally 10 seconds before you said you joined a solar co-op, which is awesome. Still may want to consider a Harmony turbine though, being fully energy independent is REALLY nice incase of grid failure or anything like that.

@@Sovereignty3 Winterizing would be fairly standard in his area. That's less of an issue IMO than the maintenance and repair costs. If Morgan can't do that himself, he'd have to call specialists as well as pay for the parts - and that would get expensive very very fast. Maybe it would pay for itself, maybe it wouldn't. But it would be one more thing to manage and keep an eye on.

Some times you need to build new to save the old, I’m glad that your going in this direction as you said upgrading the old barn would just be a over sized money pit that you could do without, but fixing it up so that you can use the top floor to put your hay bails in out of the weather and as storage for smaller items is a great idea. I think once you have all the built up soil and stuff from around the old barn it will give you better ideas of the bones of the old barn. You never know you just might get lucky in getting the barn grant for the restoration of the old barn.

Will you ever consider doing any mealworm farming for a self sufficient protein source for your birds? If the birds are eating more from feed, it might be a cost efficient way to feed them

    • @PM_82
      @PM_82 2 года назад +1

If you want to grow mealworms then you will need a lot of feed to grow them, as they eat the same kind of feedstock that a chicken would eat ( seeds, grains/oats, fruit, veggies) or meat but he can feed that to the dogs/cats then it does not add any nutrition or cost savings. All the nutrients that mealworms provide have to be provided for the mealworms first. He would be better off spending that time growing chicken feed himself like corn or wheats.

Morgan you building the new barn is a very practical idea to this city dweller. A man on the land can never have too much practical space for animals and their food and his vehicles as well as utensils. You are still learning but what you are doing, as said, seems to me to be a very logical and practical idea. You will keep making changes and improvements as you are able to logistically and financially over time. Like everything is changing and evolving and so it should as you learn and technogy changes and everthing evolves. Your farm is your haven and you, as you are aware, are just a custodian of all. Thank you for allowing people to see what a "greenhorn" can do.

Advice from Minnesota/Wisconsin during winter months BACK your tractor in. Its a good practice to make it a habit.
That way if a huge snow drift happens at barn door you can easily plow your way out.
Yes you might still have to hand remove snow right by the door edge to open it 1st . But backing out you might need more hand shoved area. [ depending the drift height and width. ]
True all winter you might only get 2 or 3 really bad snowstorms. You never know for sure, when winds will pick up. [ I find it usually happens when your sleeping].
It is never fun getting up in the morning to find snow drifts as high as the door handle on the house. Which I have opened the house door to find drift that high on the house door. But my father's house one time had snow drift up to just under the 2nd story window of house.
I think this winter is going to be a bad winter. Prepare now.
