  • @13MoonsOverMayhem
    @13MoonsOverMayhem 2 года назад +49

    Morgan, if you get Kune Kune or Idaho Pasture pigs, I think you have enough land fenced off to just add them to the rotation. I'm guessing you can do cows, chickens, pigs, chickens, and still have enough time for each spot to regrow before the cows get back to it. Especially if you finished your fencing project this year and can use some electric fence in the bigger space up top. Or, use something like American Guinea Hogs to clear whatever section of farm needs clearing next for more pasture. It seems like they can generally be contained with just one or two low wires, but it makes me nervous to not have a tall solid fence with the hounds and hunters causing problems on your land, and also would worry about larger predators in areas that you can't see well. If you just raise weaners each year for butcher, you wont have to feed them through the winter. If you want sustainability, you'll have to keep breeders, which is a whole lot more consideration, especially if you're keeping a boar. You'd have to be able to separate the boar sometimes, and in winter, you'd have to prep more barn space to keep pigs, and feed them.
    I'm sure you know all this and more, I'm mostly an armchair farmer after all. Just a collection of knowledge from farms across america and beyond.

    • @na195097
      @na195097 2 года назад +18

      I think that’s because Morgan is spending more time with the cows now. Toby doesn’t like to leave the birds/bird area very much, so we see Abby during the pasture chores. With the cattle rotation, he's just got more farm duties away from Toby and the birds.

    Our arena had both end walls made of wood so ventilation was easier. We had a vent for heat (had to keep it heated with propane) and some windows on the opposite side. There was also a circulating fan vent on that side as well. The circulating vent might work but you would need to run electricity to it. The bay door limits your options a bit but you're always good at coming up with something! :)

    It could be made simply using, some cinder blocks and a remnant sheet of plyboard/ roofing sheet. And to prevent poop build up, remove the top and lean it up against the back of the nesting boxes out of the way.

    add diagonal bracing to doors, to keep them square. Also add some small vent dampers at each end, some near top and bottom

    Why not call your lone drake LANCELOT. No reason, he just looked like a Lancelot to me when he started honking and protecting his ladies. Love your farm Morgan. God bless you and all those you love. Have a great day!

    I get food scraps from my children's elementary school for my chickens. They also have a food garbage can at lunch just for food waste from the kids that is saved for a local pig farmer

    As far as pigs go, I recommend the Kune Kune breed. They don't root much and taste great. DarkWing Duck would be cool.

    When I lived in ND, hearing the Canadian geese flying over was a sure sign that winter was coming. We had big flocks flying over. I lived in Minot near the outskirts. Also had a flock of wild turkeys come by this time of year. They had a circuit they walked around the north end of the city. Where I used to work, there were ground owls that had burrowed under one edge of the building. We also had jack rabbits running around. Now their eyes looked so weird.

    Just as long as there is a way to do "Release the Quacken" with the new hoop coop, it will be cool.

    Steve McQueen for sure!! And maybe when your trees start producing fruit and nuts that will help feed the future pigs, too. Like your idea to source a brewer for spent grain. Appreciate how you are minimizing your feed transportation needs and serving the health of the land through conscious management.

    Abby confuses Toby, he thought he'd have little Maremmanos scampering about by now. Ginny has matured, she's now the barn police. Since he managed to escape the cone, the black drake should be called Houdini.

    This channel has the most subscribers of all the sanctuaries, homesteads that I watch! Wow 700k+!! Just use RUclips so probably more on Facebook! Congrats, Morgan! Hoopy Coop looks great, sturdy for the long Vermont winter! Love seeing the chickens get scraps. 🤗❤🙏

    Hey Morgan, appreciate you coming back to this format from time to time! I've been getting my gf into your channel lately, but it was hard to find a logical starting point because a lot of times your vids will gloss over your daily chores (understandable) to cut to the interesting project, but it does mean newer people to your channel don't really get to see what your farm is about.
