I’ve watched a bunch of videos now about hanging outdoor string lights, and this is the first one that made me feel like I know exactly what to do, what to buy, and how to put it together. Thank you for being clear and to the point!
That’s great to hear! Thank you for the feedback. Hope it all works out for you! Good luck!
Me too
Same here
Same! Excellent video! Super helpful and pleasant to watch! Best one yet
@@SB-xy6ix That’s kind of you! Thanks!
Out of all the posts for string lights your idea is the only one that is the best.
Appreciate the kind words! Thanks!
I love how clear you explain it. Excellent job.
Thanks! Appreciate that.
Great job! It looks lovely! Thanks for sharing the process. Fingers crossed that the hubby will be motivated!
Lol. I’ve got my fingers crossed for you too! Thanks for taking the time to watch and for giving feedback!
Absolutely loved this idea!! Looks beautiful!
Appreciate you checking it out!
Thank you!! I’m doing this myself and I had no clue where to start. so helpful!
No problem! Glad you found the video useful! Good luck.
Thank you Dan for sharing and taking the time to do this video .
Sure thing! And thank you for watching!
Absolutely beautiful!!!! I believe I can actually do this after watching your video!!!! Thank you for sharing!!!
Hey thanks! Yup. It’s not bad at all! Hope you give it a shot!
You did an AWESOME job‼️ ♥️ how they all came out. I will definitely give this a try.
Hey thanks! Hope it goes well for you!
Looks good. I would change the order in how you did things. Stain first, paint portion going into cement. Add the hardware that hold the lights and any other brackets. THEN place into cement. Less time on a ladder. Easier to do all work from the ground.
Hey thanks! Yeh, certainly could do it like that, too!
Wow! It looks great. Beautiful idea. Thanks.
Glad you like!
THANK YOU...THANK YOU...THANK YOU...!! I've followed your method to the T and it worked out PERFECT for me. My son and I was so happy with the finished results.
That’s great! So glad it worked for you!
Such a great project! Well done
Thanks for watching!
This video is fantastic! Explained so well and thoroughly. I feel like I can handle this and I felt lost before lol. Pleasant to watch as well. Thank you so much. Your yard is beautiful 😍
Aw. That’s awfully kind of you. Thanks for your words! Glad you found the video helpful. You can absolutely handle it! Thanks for stopping by.
Thank you for this video. We had the exact same planters and this helped me get them set up.
You are welcome! Glad the video helped with your setup! Thanks for stopping by.
Beautiful garden indeed. The lights makes it fun to be out at nights
Thanks! Yes, this is the perfect time of year for it right now. Appreciate you stopping by.
Those are so cool omg! I love you and your daughters channel! Her baking is so good 😊
Lol! Thanks!
That’s really helpful and beautifully done. Thank you
Hey thanks! Glad it helped. Thanks for taking a few minutes to watch!
Looks fantastic and inspiring!!
Thanks!
Super helpful video. I’m really happy with the results, thanks!
Glad you liked! And glad you are happy with the results!
Some great ideas, thanks for sharing!
Appreciate you watching.
This is the exact project im doing tomorrow thanks for the good advise
Great! Good luck!
Great job! Was planning to do something like this for our deck. This was helpful, thanks!
Good to hear. Thanks! Good luck with your deck!
The lights look great.
Thanks for watching!
Nice work! Thanks for the idea 💡
Sure thing! Thanks for the feedback.
I know your video is a year old but I wanted to say thanks. I was able to do 4 posts and hang the lights in one day. They look awesome. I was able to skip the 2x4 with bracket step in place of a 12 year old holding the 4x4. That quikrete dries fast! I also recommend anyone finding this video to get the "string light installation kit" . Well worth it for hanging your lights and prevents the sag. And I also got some post cap solar lights. Anyway, thanks again!
Great to hear! Thanks for watching. Yeh, having someone else hold the posts and keep that level certainly can eliminate the step with the 2x4. Hah! Thanks for offering up the other tips. Funny. I’ve been thinking about getting the post cap solar lights!
Love it looks fantastic
Hey thanks! Appreciate the feedback.
I made these. They are awesome! Great video!
Awesome! Glad they turned out well and you are happy with them!
That looks amazing I love it 🙂
Hey thanks! Appreciate that you took a few minutes to watch!
Thank you for the video. I need two of those planters to attach a side of a sail canopy awning fabric cloth screen. I had not used gorilla glue before and one of the 2 x 4 pop off of the planter when I attached the 4 x 4. Because the bottom of the planter I am using had an indented base I just use flat screws to reattached the 2 x 4 to the base. That worked just fine. Again thanks.
Good info. Thanks for sharing!
Hey fantastic video, building these tomorrow
Good luck! Thanks for your feedback!
I’ve always used drainage stones, too, until I started watching Garden Answer. She never uses stones, explaining that the soil needs enough depth to form a sponge layer. This blew my mind. Last year I did some pots with and without stones. Without stones did so much better! Who knew!!! I live in AL, and we get lots of rain, btw.
Interesting. Good to know! Thanks for sharing. Will have to test that solution in the future.
I agree👍
I'm going to add a layer of landscape fabric over my stones, then add soil. The fabric will drain water and the soil will have "support".
It’s good to be handy. Nice job.
Hey thanks!
Thank you! So many videos, but none that explain it as clearly and thoroughly as you.
Hey thanks! Appreciate the comment. Thanks for taking the time to watch!
I really enjoyed this video I will definitely try this project
Awesome! Good luck! Let me know how it goes if you have a chance.
I love it ❤❤ I'm trying this
Great! Let me know how it goes!
Love it!!!
They make some really nice solar string lights like you put up, and there are more lightbulbs to each string. You don't have to worry about hooking it up to electricity, and mine sometimes last all night! Your idea is awesome!
Thanks for watching. Yup. I considered solar lights. But was worried they wouldn’t be bright enough or stay on long enough. I’ve heard they keep getting better, like you said. Certainly worth exploring!
Debbie, can you tell me what kind of lights you have? I’ve been looking for some good solar lights that are bright
Hey everyone I am so sorry I have not replied! I am enclosing a picture of the box of lights that I got at big lots. I really am impressed by their light and how long they stay lit at night. I do live in North Florida, and there is no tree cover, they are in the sunlight most of the day.
I'm having trouble posting a picture on here. They are called Wilson and Fisher Edison bulbs, And warm white, and as I stated they are solar, I think 9 feet long. I hope you can find them! I know you can probably Google Wilson and fisher.
Very very nice..... Thank you for sharing this video!
Thanks for watching!
@@daddoesvideos Hello! For your light post - did you use 4 in x 6 in x 8ft vs 6 in x 6 in x 8ft posts? I'm trying to get an idea before spending my money, lol. Thank you!
Hey there. They are 4 in x 4 in x 8 ft. Good luck!
Nice job! I’m going to see if there are solar lights! We have an outdoor patio way out back that this would look beautiful!
Yeh, someone else mentioned using solar lights too. Certainly could work!
Great video!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing this video and for being very thorough with the details....I feel like this process will be very successful for those who make these....I appreciate this video so much.......Your backyard looks amazing 😉
Hey. Thanks for watching! And thank you for the feedback. Hope it goes well if you give it a whirl!
Really nice!
Appreciate that! Thanks you for checking it out!
Looks great!

Awesome video! Thank you!
Thanks for the feedback! Appreciate you stopping by.
Good work!!
Thanks for taking a few minutes to watch!
Beautiful
Thanks for taking a chance to watch!
Beautiful!❤❤
Thanks! Appreciate you watching!
Awesome video!!!!
Hey thanks. Glad you enjoyed!
Thanks Dad!!!!
Hey no problem!
I would try to stretch wire along the four posts and then hook the lights to the wire to make it more stable and hopefully avoid as much as possible sagging. Great video!
Yup. Certainly worth considering as well! Thanks for watching!
Will it hold those tight wires ?Cause this is what o want to do .
I have had no problems. Been about three years now.
@@daddoesvideos what if i use support wire and tighten pretty tight so it stays almost straight Through the whole length .Do you think it will handle such a tension ?
I think Thea upper wire would help with the tension, but I’d leave a little slack, too.
Excellent! Very informative and clear. Link to the product does not seem to be working (or the item might have been discontinued). But the product info is good enough
Thanks for watching. Yeh, looks like the lights are out of stock. It’s the correct link. Thanks for the heads up!
Gréât job thanks for sharing
Sure. And thank you for watching!
OMG, This video is just awesome. Simply superb and well made. Just one small suggestion, if I may give. If you can put down the list of materials starting from Resin Barrel, concrete, beams, nuts, bolts, etc that would be just very helpful. However your video still is mind blowing with all clear instructions. Thank you.
Great feedback! I’ll take that into consideration next time I make a video like this one. Appreciate that. Thank your for watching.
Thank you!
No problem! Thanks for watching.
Great job... that's for the step by step. I wad going to out the post in three ground but now I think I will do the planters. Can you share which wireless remote you used, it looks like a BN- Link, but I could not see which model.
Sorry for the typos....I meant thanks for the step by step...and I was going to put...
Lol. No problem. Here’s the link to the wireless remote: www.amazon.com/dp/B07FSYJRFM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_yoSNFb31RYZQ2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Question: is screwing the post to something with a bracket necessary? I guess I thought the concrete would just adhere to the post so it wouldn’t move, but I’m definitely a newbie to all of this. Thanks for the great video!
Good question. Yeh, I mean, you don’t have to do that because the concrete would would adhere. I just wanted some extra stability so the post wouldn’t move off the position it was in when I put the concrete in. Hope that helps!
Great video!! Just curious if you had to put the 2x4 in the bottom of the planter... could you just put the post in and cement it?
Hey! Thanks for watching. Yup, you could certainly do that. I used the 2x4 with the brackets just to give the post a bit more stability when I put the concrete in.
Thank you so much 😊
Surely. Glad you enjoyed!
Looks really nice. Good video. You posted this awhile ago, do you have any updates on how the project handles windy weather or did you have any problems with them staying upright?
Hey. Thanks for the feedback! No problems at all with them. The concrete in the barrels weighs those down enough that they aren’t going anywhere. And I like the closed hooks I used for the string lights attached to the posts. Those ensure the lights aren’t flying off in high winds - and we’ve had a bit of that over the past month or so!
Love this video! How close to the cement did you screw the drainage holes?
Hey! Thanks for your comment! Glad you stopped by. I drilled the drainage holes as close as I could to the top of the cement. Hope that helps!
Great video
Well, thank you. Appreciate that!
This is great! I'm actually making these and was curious how many bags of cement did you use per bucket?
Thanks for the feedback! I used two bags of concrete in each planter.
Where did you drill the drainage holes? Was it 2 on either side of the post on the outer edge? Asking for clarity Thx
Hi! I drilled four of them - equally spaced around the planter. They are located right above the concrete.
This is an awesome video! Can you give the link to the buckets you used?
Sure thing! Here’s the link: www.homedepot.com/p/Southern-Patio-22-44-in-Dia-x-14-96-in-H-Rustic-Oak-High-Density-Resin-Whiskey-Barrel-Planter-HDR-023395/205626595
Looks awesome do you know what brackets they are
Thanks! Here’s a link to the brackets: www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-3-in-Zinc-Plated-Corner-Brace-4-Pack-15307/202033902
Great video & thanks for sharing. My question is how do you scew in the bracket inside the bucket since the 2 X 4 is already glued to the bottom. I am afraid that my drill does not have enough clearance to drill the crews in inside the bucket. Thanks.
Hey there. Thanks for watching! Yes, using the drill at that point is a little tight. Mine barely fit. Just keep in mind that your screws don’t need to be perfectly flush or anything like that. It’s just a way to stabilize the post a bit. You don’t absolutely need the 2x4 on the bottom if you are able to have a friend keep the post steady while you are mixing the concrete. After that, you can then make sure the post is straight by using scrap 2x4s to keep it in place.
@@daddoesvideos Thanks for your reply. I forgo the 2X4 but put more decorative rock on top of the cement, I believe mine went up to about 180 pounds per planter. Thanks to you my project is completed! We just went thru 30-50 mile wind last Saturday, no problems, they held up.
@@t1w123 Excellent! Yeh, those things aren’t going anywhere!
Is their a way to install a sturdy bracket so can replace the 4x4’s when they eventually rot? It’s seems the ones I found remotely close aren’t strong enough
Hi! Thanks for watching. I’m not sure you’d be able to replace since the concrete locks them in. But if you use a sealer (and reapply when needed) on the posts, they should last for quite a while.
How easy is it to move the posts/planters when done? Want to copy this but need to be able to move them at the end of the season. Will a hand truck easily move them?
Hi. I would guess that would work if you are moving them a short distance. They are more than 100 pounds each, so while movable, you’ll might need a friend to help a little. Thanks for watching!
Great video ...I’m
Thinking of using these post ideas and using some lattice for privacy ..think it’ll
Work ??
Hmm. Maybe. I think it all depends on how you set it up! Be interested to hear how it goes!
Very nice! The only thing you for was to remove the tags from your lights.
Yeh, I eventually did that! Haha. Thanks for watching!
What size planters did you use? How are they holding up? Looks good 👍
Hey. Thanks for watching. Planters are holding up pretty well so far. Be interested to see them after a few years. But that’s the beauty of resin. Pretty resilient. Here’s the link to the planters: www.homedepot.com/p/Southern-Patio-22-44-in-Dia-x-14-96-in-H-Rustic-Oak-High-Density-Resin-Whiskey-Barrel-Planter-HDR-023395/205626595
Thank you for great instructions. How did you keep the concrete from leaking out the bottom of the planters, as they have holes in the bottom?
Hi. Thanks for watching! Are you using the same planters that are in the video? I don’t recall them having holes on the bottom.
@@daddoesvideos hye just wanted to know what type of planters did you use on the video? thank you.
Hi. Here’s a link to the planters: Your friend has shared a link to a Home Depot product they think you would be interested in seeing.

@@daddoesvideos thank you, I took a look at them, they do have a drain hole and also have a plug for the drain hole. Problem solved.
Any chance one can use these pots for triangle sun shade/sails? Thank you for the super dope video!
Thanks for watching! I’m not sure if you could use those pots for that purpose.
No. They are not heavy enough. A strong wind will pull them over.
Just found your channel- so glad I did! I think I will attempt this now that I know exactly what i need and how to do it! When you drilled the holes for drainage- did you drill into the concrete or into the side of the tub?
Awesome. Glad you enjoyed! I drilled the holes barely above the concrete. That way the water can get through the soil and stones, but won’t just sit under them.
@@daddoesvideos -thanks for your quick response, can’t wait to give it a try!
Great! Good luck!
Do think they could hold two corners of a shade sail? The other two corners being attached to the roof.
Hmm. Maybe. I mean, if you put the bags of concrete in the planter, those things aren’t going anywhere. I like the idea. Probably just comes down to physics in how you are attaching the sail to the roof. Seems neat, though.
Did you mix the concrete up at all or just pour the water over it? Ive seen it done either way?
Hey there. I mixed it. Just felt better about doing it that way.
Awesome
Just a suggestion, why not put landscape fabric on top of the stones to prevent soil from filling in around them?
Yeh. Could certainly do that. Not a bad idea at all!
Very detailed video with clear instructions...what is the diameter of the base of your planter ?
Hey. Thanks for watching! Here’s a link to the pots. You can check dimensions there. www.homedepot.com/p/Southern-Patio-22-44-in-Dia-x-14-96-in-H-Rustic-Oak-High-Density-Resin-Whiskey-Barrel-Planter-HDR-023395/205626595
Very nice
Thank you! Appreciate you stopping by.
Oh, man! This looks so easy! Thank you so much for this video! I debated on whether to get the plastic ones versus the wood barrels. Only because I live in the Midwest and we get pretty strong winds here and I didn’t want them to topple over. I think the concrete would be nice but wasn’t sure if the weight would break the resin. How is it holding up?
Yeh, it’s not that hard to put together. The resin buckets are holding up perfectly. Still no issues years later!
Great video, will be doing this very soon. Not sure where you live, but have you had any issues with wind? Have they ever blown over?
Awesome. Glad you liked! I live in the Midwest so we aren’t strangers to some nice thunderstorms and an occasional tornado. Have had no issues with the lights or the posts. That’s 100 lbs of concrete in those buckets so they aren’t going anywhere. And the lights are attached with C hooks.
Kind of random but what is the type of those 3 trees at 7:32 behind your post and patio heater? Great video!
Hey! Thanks for taking a few minutes to watch. Appreciate the feedback. Those are emerald green arborvitae trees.
Great project, I want something like, that in my yard, so how much money did you spent for everything.. Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻🥰
Probably around $225-$250 or so. Thanks for the feedback. And thank you for watching!
@@daddoesvideos 🙏🏻👍🏻
Price is less then I imagined.
We rent so this is a great idea.
We bought patio lights last week.
Plenty.😉
Thank you for sharing.
Looks beautiful! How tall was the end result after you added the post on the planter with the cement?
Hey thanks! The posts are eight feet. So maybe a couple inches taller than that.
@@daddoesvideos Thank you! We will be doing the same soon! 😊👍
Awesome. Good luck!
do you have the link to the planter? you did such an awesome job. I will follow your direction.
Hey thanks! Glad u are giving it a shot. Here’s a link to the planter: www.homedepot.com/p/Southern-Patio-22-44-in-Dia-x-14-96-in-H-Rustic-Oak-High-Density-Resin-Whiskey-Barrel-Planter-HDR-023395/205626595
This is such a great video! We just poured the concrete today into the 4 planters.
Question - do you have a link for the handing planter hook you used?
Glad you are giving it a shot! Hope it goes well. Here’s a link to the hanging basket hooks: www.amazon.com/dp/B07JBLPWNB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_QFER9YD50JN8KE2PP76V
We're planning to use those same planters. How much concrete did you use? And how tall were your beams?
Hi. There is 100 lbs of concrete in each planter. Posts are eight feet tall.
Great video! Just wondering if the 2x4’s on bottom of post are needed...can’t you just place the 4x4 in the barrel, hold with a level while concrete is poured in as it sets? Once it sets, post isn’t moving. Just weighing out if I want or need to do that step...
Hey thanks! Yes, what you are describing would work. I just wanted some extra stability so that’s why I started with the 2x4s on the bottom. As long as you make sure the 4x4 is level while it sets, you should be good!
@@daddoesvideos Sounds great, thanks!
@@daddoesvideos Was also going to ask if you thought going with 10’ 4x4’s would be too top heavy in those barrels...was just trying to get above my 9’ umbrellas without having to move them. But also don’t want to risk them being too heavy just for that reason.
I think you’d be fine. If you put 100 pounds of concrete in the planter, those things aren’t moving. You’d have to put quite a bit of weight on top of those 4x4s for the to topple.
@@daddoesvideos Okay thanks, appreciate the feedback. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Hi so did you screwed the bracket to the ground or just to the piece of wood thank you
Hey there. I screwed the bracket into just the piece of wood.
Would this work if we use 2x4x8? or is the 4x4 better?
Hey there. Thanks for watching! I’d go with the 4x4. It’s just a stronger, thicker piece of wood.
Do you need to use Thomson’s sealer if you use pressure treated wood?
Yeh you need to use a sealer. I wouldn’t use Thompson’s, though. I keep hearing good things about Cabot, so I’ll probably try that brand next time.
I bought a 20 inch Resin Barrel and is about 11in height. How much Quikcrete / water would you recommend to use? Also what type of corner brackets did you use for your base? Thanks in advance! Great video
Thanks for watching! I used two bags of fast setting quikrete (in the red package). Use a half gallon of water per bag. My planters are about 22.5” across and 15” high. The concrete came up to about 7.5” in the planters. If you did the same, I feel like the concrete would be too high if you wanted to plant flowers. Maybe you go with one bag or a bag and a half? I believe these are the brackets I used:
www.homedepot.com/p/202033902
Great job! How big were the buckets?
Hey thanks! Appreciate you stopping by. Here’s a link to the planters:

Great video buddy.
Do you know the size of the bucket used? Was it the 20 inch? I see HD has a Belle 20 inch in diameter. Thanks.
Disregard. I found it in the comments.
Cool deal. Appreciate you watching.
We finished this project and now have to do the drainage holes. My husband is nervous that it will crack the pot. Do you have any suggestions?
Hey there. If you got the resin ones, they won’t crack. (That’s the nice thing about using resin pots.) Just drill slightly above the cement line in the pot. You’ll just end up with a small hole where the water can drain.
Is it holding up against heavy wind? Trying to be careful not to break the bulbs.
Good question. Been perfectly fine. We just had 50 mph winds through the last few days. No issues.
Did you use Pressure Treated or untreated 4X4? I am in CO and weather here goes to extreme on hot and cold side with snow so want to know.
Hi. I used pressure treated. I’m in Ohio. So we get our share of 90+ days and plenty of snow and cold in the winter. The posts are perfectly fine after a year or so. Good luck!
How do those resin planters fare throughout the year? Our winters are not that bad in Vancouver, BC. I wanted to make sure they wouldn't Crack after 1 winter outside.
Hey! They’ve gone through two winters in the midwestern states and I’ve had no issues so far.
