Well thank you guys for sharing your talents and tips for putting up these lights. Brilliant! I followed your directions and my backyard looks fabulous! So clean and professional looking. I can’t believe I did this. Thank you guys for your such detailed and clear instructions.
A good rule of thumb for setting poles is to bury them 10 percent of the pole length plus 2 feet in soft soils, and 10 percent of the pole length plus 1 foot in hard and rocky soils. This is how set depth is determined for utility poles.
Great video. Question: What is the maximum length of string lights you'll typically allow between two posts/poles before you decide a third one is needed for support?
Thanks guys. I'm having problems finding contractors who will call me back (let alone not charge me a gazillion $'s to do stuff - $4000 to build a 25 ft fence?) so I've been resorting to buying DIY kits and RUclips. I bought the Yardistry pavillion and the Adjust-A-Gate gate kit, then the string lights, now I just want to put them up without spoiling the whole professional look. The vinyl coated cable should do the trick. :-)

Good video but you should’ve included a “reveal” of how good the finished lights looked. Question: why was the final hook eye screwed into a rafter and not screwed in same spot in beam as the first one?
Yes we should have put a final in there. We wanted the viewing angle from the patio to be similar on both sides and needed another 6” - 9” on that other side.
This was very helpful; thank you. Wish you added the connect instruction to the pole (resistance measures), and also to add the finished look. Still loved the video.
After you attach it you could use a pair of vice grips and grab the dead horse. Loosen the clamps until the cable can slide freely, and use the eye screw as a pulley to pull the slack out of the full length. Hope that makes sense - seems like that would be easier with two people up there somehow so one person can hold the vice grips while the other guy loosens the clamp.
Thanks for the video. Used your guide as my go-to during this ordeal of hanging 168'... Based on my experience, and granted I'm far from a pro, but the turnbuckles are KEY to getting the guide wire perfectly taut as well as maintaining one's (my) sanity.
One thing I learned before hanging my patio lights is that a one-size-fits-all approach will lead to disappointment. Each video I watched had a different approach. The approach I went with was completely different approach from this one as it utilized removavle vertical pipes (5' or 6' long 1" diameter galvanized pipes or conduit that can easily slide in & out of 18" long 1-1/4" PVC pipes that are mounted in the earth with concrete at various locations throughout my yard/patio). These galvanized pipes/conduit with with hooks attached on the top "for the light strings to hang from" are easily removable from the PVC pipes for storage during the Winter months or if I want to change my light pattern in my yard, that too is easily accomplished since the pipes/conduit easily come out of the PVC pipe sections. Just my two cents.
Care to share photos- I was considering something like that- utilizing powder coated slotted tubing that would slide into a cement “ pipe or holder” to allow for easier removal as required.
Thank you for the basic installation of the string lights. I’m wanting to install hooks on my back patio so you gave me some good instructions. Thank you!
Where did you plug in the light strands? Is there any additional information on how you ran the extension cord to the lights to hide the cords as much as possible?
Fyi... don’t do what I did by putting the bulbs in first before hanging them... if not hung properly you will lose some bulbs 😐 it’s heavy. Set up the strands first, secure them THEN put the bulbs in.
Thanks for the detail explanations guys. You saved me big bucks. Kudos to you guys. I have successfully installed my string lights sets in my backyard.

Hey Linda. Watch the end of the video. Once you put the male connection on, just plug them in. If you want a dimmer installed and tied directly into power, you will want to talk to a local electrician.
I like your video. I have the same setup. Please tell me about the pole you used. What's the material and what is at the top to attach the wire? Thank you.
Is there a reason you specifically recommend the vinyl coated wire? I’m asking because I already have non-coated wire. What difference should I expect if I went that route? Thank you for the useful content.
Non-coated could rust and fray over time. Which in turn could 1. Splinter someone with any future handling or 2. slice and/or cut into the light strand cord. The vinyl coated just holds up much better over time and (perhaps more importantly) offers safer handling.
Where did you get the poles? Right now, looking at metal conduit from HD and spraying it black, but interested in where you got the poles for this project.
