Thanks for this video. I had hung lights with a very long span and initially tensioned them with the electrical line between the lights. I wan't comfortable with this and needed a fair amount of tension to keep the lights high enough.
One day later I saw your video and instantly recognized a great solution. I used your hardware link (already had the lights). Everything arrived the next afternoon. Within less than 30 minutes I had 3 lines (40 foot each) up, strung the lights, and had a much more professional installation with virtually no tension load on the electrical components.
Thank you for taking the time to document this, upload it, explain it, and link the hardware. Less than 24 hours between watching the video and the whole system installed.
That's great. Ours have been through some very stormy weather and never a problem with the support system.
I’ve watched many videos on how to hang these lights. Yours is, by far, the best. Simple without over-engineering the project. I installed mine today after purchasing all the hardware. Even with a small yard I t took all day but I did it by myself It looks absolutely fantastic, super clean and professional. Thank you so much for this video.
That's great, I'm glad it went well. We have our lights on a 2 hour timer on a dusk to dawn light. Love it when they pop on. Thanks for the generous comment.
@@DIYOnTheHouseI put them on a timer, too. It’s very nice. 🙂
Definitely one of the best videos I have seen so far! thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank You!
I'm watching your video because I have to install these lights kinda often. I have to say... We used to use wooden poles like that before with triangles at the bottom to keep them erect (which was gaudy as hell) and had to place plants all around those to cover up the triangles. I have just switched to using galvanized fence poles instead with little eyelets at the top. It has upped my lighting game tremendously. I also don't even bother with the steel cable but I guess if I had to do longer runs of them I would. I just use a zip tie to secure them to the poles. Anyways, like I said I've been installing these kind of lights now for about 4 years and still learning. Happy to see someone else's version.
I bet the galvanized poles work well! Thankfully, these poles have held up wonderfully!
Zip ties are plenty strong enough for hanging the lights. I have a very large back yard and have a couple hundred feet of string lights like these all over the back yard. I used zip ties without any issue.
Great to hear!! We were concerned because of us in Arizona and the intense sun - glad yours worked!
Sun-baked AZ means no bueno for plastics, and same for hurricane prone areas like Louisiana. Remember, if one fails, the adjacent ones are even more likely to break.
Lol😂🤣, ours would sun rot in a few months. But that's our state 🤷♀️.
In high heat areas zip ties are only temporary as they will become brittle and break off unless this is a temporary install such as 3mts or less
Thank you so much!! just bought these exact lights and didnt know how i was going to hang them up.
That's great! Ours light up every night on a timer, we love them.
regular pliers works even for 1/8 cable! great tutorial
Good to know!
Thank you for the tip...I'm going to surprise my wife..
That's a great, she'll love it.
It’s Jan 2022…this will our project this spring…Thank you !
Have fun!
Nice! Very good idea with the cables and the Hog Rings, thanks for provide all the links of what we need.
Glad to help!
Thank you so much. We have the same lights and wire but didn't know what to use to connect the two. Hog rings are what we need to know about!!!!!
Wonderful!
5:10 For stringing the lights onto your cable, I gotta recommend the mini carabiners that come with other Amazon kits. SO much easier to deploy than zip ties or crimping cable.
Thanks for the info!
link to them?
I wanna do this for my dinning room since my ceiling is too high and i feel like this will give good ambiance and character to my dinning area.
Oh, I would love to hear how that turns out!
Hog Rings…great idea! Good video.
Thanks 👍
Great 👍 awesome 👏 thank you for the fantastic video
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you.
I think I got those same string lights at Harbor Freight.
Great Job!
Great!! We love ours!
Thank you for sharing this!
Of course!
Very informative and you made it look so easy!!!
Glad it was helpful!
New sub here! Came to the channel to see how you built a rag rug loom, and saw this string light tutorial! Excellent channel! Thanks!
Awesome! Thank you!
Great video man. Wondering if stringing the cable through the hole above the lights would work instead of zip tie. A little more work on the ground but might be worth not having to use zip ties. Just a thought.
That probably would work. 2 reasons we didn't go that route - it was 100 feet and was cumbersome and heavy to pull up -- the hole on top of the lights would have turned the lights at a 90 degree angle to the cable and it would have bunched up. Appreciate you watching!
I thought of same thing, however, in order for that to work well, the orientation of the hole would have to run perpendicular to the string of lights, so that the wire would fish through properly. However, it's made parallel. (meaning the wire would have to curve / zig zag around the holes to accomplish what you're saying.) Perhaps the manufacturers could make this change!
Love it !
Thank you. We have them come on every night, one of the best projects we have done.
Looks great!
Oh I can definitely do this! This is beautiful!!!! Thank you
You are so welcome!
looks good
We love them!
Could you install the string lights onto the wire while the wire is on the ground? Then hang up your two ends on the posts? Seems easier than working overhead or on ladder.
Great question - here is how we did it for a wedding - I think it is what you are referring to. ruclips.net/video/Yfk2frCzFwE/видео.html
Thank you!
You're welcome!
You're welcome!
Great "how-to" video! Can I ask how did you get your vertical, wood posts then set in place and secured? Thank you!
They are concreted in and they are also braced by the attached fence. Thank you
@@DIYOnTheHouse Can I ask how far apart you have them? I won't be able to brace mine against anything. I was going to sink them in about 2 feet and then cement them into place. I was planning on about 25 to 30 feet in between each pole. Do you think that would work or do I need to go closer?
Great video! Most string lights come with ends that will create an odd spaced gap when you connect two together, any idea how to avoid those odd gaps?
Sorry I don't. I would loop them back on each other until the spacing is correct and tie wrap them loop,
How did you install the posts, looking to do this from scratch in my backyard! Thanks
2' deep, set in concrete. The top of the fence is secured to the post to give it more stability.
Great video! I'm surprised that small black zip ties didn't work for holding the string lights to the wire. What was the issue there? Thanks!
We are guessing they would do good for short-term. We live in Arizona (intense sun) and a VERY high wind area - we didn't want to have to worry about repair.
How tall are your posts? Looks great!
Thanks! The corner posts are 10 foot, with 2 foot in the ground in concrete.
Correct me if I’m wrong but…wasn’t the cable supposed to run through the lights? Through those little holes?
The hanger holes are facing the wrong way. But I still would do it the same way, the cable should last years. I don't see the light lasting as long with the UV so it will be easier to change the string lights out when they are done.
Could you not run the thin support wire through the hole on the top of the string lights instead of using cable ties. This would also aid in determining adequate tension. Remove bulbs of course until strung.
The holes face the wrong way and would twist the lights. It would also be a problem to replace the string light in the future. Probably not my first choice.
Is there a reason you screwed the bulbs in after it was hung?
The possibility of breaking them while hanging is huge, especially with our fence below.
Could you please add the link on how to install the poles?
Thanks for all the links.

How were your posts set? Were they just put into the ground, or did you put them in concrete footings? I want to put my posts on top of poured footings, but I am concerned with the posts leaning with the 1/8” cable and turnbuckles I will be using to keep them tight. I would just put the posts into the ground, but I know how that causes rot, regardless of type of wood.
We cemented in each post 2' in the ground, I agree, they would lean otherwise. Wood will eventually rot - but should last years and years.
I was planning on drilling the post (not that large) into the wood fence on one of the angles, then to a tree then to the house. I figure that whenever the wood fence needs replacement the post will too. Have you seen or done that, thank you! I purchased off your links!@@DIYOnTheHouse
That's great but which kit did you buy on Amazon??? That's the most important part that you didn't share!!!!
Sorry - the link was in the description. Here it is: amzn.to/2PKzxuh
@@DIYOnTheHouse please add the link for the cable kit not the lights - thank you
Is there a link for the kit?
So Sorry - I thought I added that! Here it is amzn.to/3uys1RV
@@DIYOnTheHouse you're the best!!
are those 4x4 posts? What height did you do? I'm planning the same type of thing......not sure of the weight and what it would do over time to warp the post
The posts a 4x4 by 10'. The fence we built supports the close to the center of the post, so I was not concerned about them being warped.
If it we had not had the fence it would definitely be a concern.
what size hog rings did you use? I see on amazon they come in different sizes
This is similar to what we used - amzn.to/3dMReS0
You didn't talk about the pole installation and footing
The poles were set on another video when we did the fence.
How high are those posts?
The corner posts are 10', buried in the ground 2'.
How tall are those post? And are they 4x4’s?
They are 4x4 by 10 foot.
@@DIYOnTheHouse thank you
@@DIYOnTheHouse 10 foot posts? or 12 foot posts buried with 10 feet above ground?
I’m curious about the super tall post. How far did you have to bury it and do you think setting it in gravel would work?
Hi,
I set them at 2' in concrete. They also use the fence as bracing. If the fence wasn't there I think they might pull in at the top because it's 45' across the yard. The posts are 12' long. If yours are free standing I would go deeper depending on the span.
What was the itemized total cost of this project please ? 🤗
I think we spent right at $130 - the timer was around $12 and the kit to hang was $18, and lights for our size yard was $96.
I came to learn about string lights but left sulking about how puny my hands look.
They'll get bigger with age.
I hate my neighbor’s lights! I live In the mountains of NM. This guy selfishly turn his lights on full moon nights. He goes away for weeks for his job and leaves his lights 100% of the time. He uses those bright ass LED lights. We live 500 feet away from his front door and those rotten lights shine on my house. I do enjoy viewing the night sky in the mountain. This guy’s family lives up the road and they do the same. BTW, this whole family goes to church and has no regard for their neighbors. There are other ways for home security:
Lol
hmmmm
You sir, get a thumb's up! Nice video.
Much appreciated!
