    At my 3rd jump ever (3rd level AFF) I had a hard landing with my hand below my butt, breaking and shifting my thumb. Needed to have 2 metal pins in my thumb for 2 months to get it in the correct place again. Year after I restarted my AFF (in a different & smaller landing zone) and the first jump I REALLY was scared for the landing, but I aced it! Since then jumped around 20 more times and only had a signle small fail due to wind gust, resulting in a blue ankle. And the weir looks of a bunch of cows in the field 😂. But now I'm definitely gaining confidence rapidly and each jump I'm less and less woried about my landings. Love the feeling in the sky! Blue skies!

      @@jglayden For me it just "clicked" all of a sudden. I had a bit of a late flare, a bit of a early flare and then it clicked where the sweet spot was. I'm sure you'll have the click soon!

      Awesome that you worked it out!! I triple-fractured and fully dislocated my right ankle on that same jump. Foot was dangling off my leg lol. 9 screws and a metal plate in there now. Between the accident, waiting for swelling to reduce before they’d operate (3 weeks. 3 damn weeks with all 3 ankle bones fractured, only a soft cast. That was the most miserable period), surgery, and then recovery, I was off my foot for damn near a year. 6 months or so til I could rly put weight on it, and a few more months for swelling to reduce and til I could walk without a boot.
      I haven’t jumped since (this was about 2 yrs ago). I’m starting to get the itch to jump back into it and back into AFF, but man that injury seriously changed my life. Led to me moving out of my apartment (Cuz I couldn’t do anything for myself and I lived alone), had to give my dog away (to my sister, thankfully) cuz I couldn’t walk him and I can’t have him where I live now, even left my job eventually cuz it was too far from the place I moved into (my gfs apartment). That ankle/foot still has problems... ballooning up constantly. Gotta wear compression socks n shit.
      Idk. The thought of landing gives me anxiety. But man watching these videos makes me wanna get back into it so badly. So torn.

    Great tips! During the first couple of AFF jumps the instructors had us do our half flair very fast, because some students might not even get a half flair in, but now that I have my A license and I do my entire flair very slow and smooth, it makes landings incredibly soft and no longer eating a mouthful of dirt on every jump😂

    Whenever I am near the moment of landing, I often have Brian Germain coaching me through my mind saying, “Breath deeply, be aware of the peripheral vision, look diagonally at the ground. Keep hold of that deep flare“ It’s nice once you start to get it, and you realise you don’t have to hurt your ankles/knees any more.

    Tip #4. Since getting my A License and not jumping as much as I was doing during the certification course, I've noticed that it has become increasingly harder to do standing landings. This is so true, I have been a bit shyer of pulling ALL the way down. I've been landing safely, but its been a steady series of butt slides in the grass :(

    Another excellent video !!! As usual. Good stuff! I watched Catherine for almost a year before doing my AFF course and still do today after getting my B licence. I have had many good landings but it's the bad ones you always remember. My most unforgettable was after my confidence had increased and I over shot my landing spot and flew right into a landscaping tree. Everyone at my DZ still reminds me of that one to this day plus I'm still feeling the effects on my shoulder. I'm still jumping and landing in a good safe spot far away from obstacles. It's far better to walk a little ways back to the hanger than landing in the wrong spot or hitting an obstacle.

    First 82 jumps...8 stand-ups....next 7 jumps... 5 stand-ups. ( one PLF was a wicked crosswind) The difference? I went from a 0.87 wing loading on a Pilot 230 230 to a 0.95 wing loading on a Safire 209. It seems to suit me better and I can feel the flare where the larger canopy just seemed clunky, which is how I would land. Best advise I received though was from the S & TA , “Fly it until it ends, keep hands straight, do not reach for the ground with your foot because it makes you move the hand on that side downward and turns the canopy.”
    .The other option, of course, is to only land in an 8-10 MPH headwind. Tough not to stand those up. On the bright side, I am a champion PLF’er. So accomplished at this art, I am thinking of offering a PLF course.

    Hey Catherine, great video. Although you spoke about wing loading and length of lines for smaller parachute in comparison to larger parachutes, equating wing loading, you didn't mention the possibility of the break lines being a little too long for the skydiver, thus not being able to compete a good flare. I had three inches shortened on my break lines, and that, made a huge difference in slowing down my parachute, resulting in stand up landings. What are your thoughts of shortening the break lines? Thank you, Munaman

    • @emmigration
      @emmigration Год назад

      Same happened to me when I bought my first canopy. I always had great landings with my student rig but then started to crash on every landing with my own. I think I had the lines shortened by 3 inches and then later took off 2 more. It made a huge difference and I was back to smooth stand up landings.

    I am still looking into getting my A-license and have about 19 jumps. Sadly I could not land my canopy standup even once... Harsh landings and small injuries as a result... I know, that I flare way to early and I have to look at a point in the horizon... But it didn't help me yet. Maybe with this video it will get better

  • @jglayden
    @jglayden 3 года назад

    I am currently working on my A license and for some reason I always hit the ground hard? I am doing a full flare and not letting go, but I fall like a rock. Usually at my DZ there's not a lot of wind and I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it? I see other skydivers remain horizontal for a long time (especially swoopers), but for me, it seems that I am always landing at a 45-degree angle from the sky. I have been landing on my butt lately, as I feel that it gives me the most time to slow down. I know that people say that you can hurt your tail bone. Two years ago I broke my leg landing on my third AFF jump trying to do a PLF, as my left leg seemed to get caught on either a rock or uneven ground, so I been a little nervous with my legs. I keep trying and I will do backflips one day when I can do a successful stand up landing.

    Thank you for the tips - they are always valuable.
    Sadly there is not much you can do to practice landings as a beginner - besides doing more landings... 🤨 And hopefully you will be able to master the basics before you hurt yourself.
    Flairing exercises at higher altitude may provide some guidance, but for me as a beginner, I was not able to perceive a difference in speed without nearby ground as a reference.

    All well said, but the single best way to really improve is to learn coastal soaring with a miniwing. You'll be amazed on how much your canopy flight will improve. It's like a windtunnel for canopy flight.

    • @SkydiveVibes
      @SkydiveVibes  Год назад +1

      You can get better performance out of your canopy but that comes into play with more advanced canopies. For now at a 0.95 you are at a great spot for your number of jumps. We usually aim for a 1:1 ratio.

    Looking at canopy pilots landing with a camera as a fresh student is a horrible idea.
    The skills are different, and the canopies are different.
    ...Maybe you can extract the general height when to flare from all those videos, but the image is almost always warped (by the camera) and the image is not what students see when approaching the ground.
    I disagree with you on that tip.
    The best tip I had regarding this, is to look at the horizon and forward, as opposed to staring at the grass.
    That tip is much more subjective and allows the individual to assess the situation better.

    The lines can not be the major contributing factor to drag. I refuse to believe that. The canopy itself is the main contributor to the drag power, then the pilot, then the lines. Just think surface area. I could be wrong about this, but I would need some convincing. The lines can not be the major contributing factor to drag, just no...

    • @SkydiveVibes
      @SkydiveVibes  3 года назад

      well it is the only thing changing when you compare 1:1 wingloading. A Sabre2 120 will be more responsive then a Sabre2 higher like 150 with the same wingloading (with a 120 pounds person vs a 150 pounds person)...

    • @skydivelive7200
      @skydivelive7200 3 года назад

      You've got the right idea. The canopy, the pilot, and the pilot chute are all bigger factors, but in high-performance landings, the line drag can become quite significant. There are lines intended to limit drag. I like to compare it to a swimmer shaving his/her body hair.

    • @jazzochannel
      @jazzochannel 3 года назад

      @@skydivelive7200 okay, thanks for the input. I don't know much about swooping. This video is not aimed at swoopers though, as far as I can judge. I'm aware of dacron / spectra lines. In my limited experience, these are insignificant to my landings. both work fine.
