Backpacking FAIL at Tar Hollow State Forest

- Join me for my first ever backpacking "fail" on my trip to Tar Hollow State Forest in Ohio! Sara and I drove 3.5 hours after work on a Friday to make it to the backpacking trail before dark. I selected a route called the Dullen Loop due to the close proximity of the campsite to the parking lot. This ended up being a mistake!
The camp itself sat in what was essentially a swamp with vegetation above your knees in some spots. The ground was littered with snakes and I pulled a tick off me in the first five minutes. We ended up finding a picnic table that we sat on top of until it was dark to try and keep the bugs off.
When we arrived in camp a massive family with about a dozen kids had already constructed a tent city. Kids were running around with BB guns and machetes, while others were weed eating around their campsite and shining flashlights in our eyes all night. I've never seen anything quite like this on a "backpacking" trip before.
We made the most of the trip and still got in some miles for conditioning. I tested out my snake skins for my hammock for the first time and I'll definitely be using these in the future. There's nothing like being able to sleep in a hammock looking up at the stars and still having the option of quickly deploying your tarp should the weather turn. As always, thanks for watching! If. youlike the channel please subscribe!
When people ask me why I like to hike in the winter so much I am going to show them this video! No mud, way less people and more views! Really liking the channel man looking forward to what’s to come!
Yeah I like the cold weather much better for backpacking, especially in Ohio. Thanks for watching buddy.
You never fail, as long as you learn and it looks like you learned a lot! I've never been there, but now know what to look for. Some great footage, especially of the guy using the weed eater at camp. hahaha Thanks again -dave
Yeahhhh it wasn’t great. I’ll go back this fall and just park at the main trailhead and start there. Camp Dullen is snake and tick central.
Anticipating the follow-up trip video so that I know whether it’s worth it. Just got back yesterday from my 5th annual Dolly Sods trip; as muddy as always, but still my favorite place to backpack. Have fun!
Follow up trip probably won’t be until fall. I have Wildcat Hollow and Tar Hollow on the cold weather list lol
I’m on the west coast so this green, muddy, flat area seems like a dream!
Haha yeah I guess you yearn for what you don’t have. I’ve lived in California though and I can assure you I’d take the hiking out west hands down. Summers in Ohio are humid, the sweating uncontrollably at 4am humid. No views or anything to break up the scenery, just dense and green. The only redeeming quality is that it’s fairly flat, but that comes at the expense of not having any views to see 😕
Hi there, I stumbled upon your video. just as an update, in preparation for an upcoming 50k race we are putting on at Tar Hollow, I have weed whacked both logan loops and the buckeye trail. i also cleared the trail from that outhouse up to logan south. We have also removed over 100 downed trees. just an update in case wanted to revisit the great trails
Maybe I’ll give it a shot this fall. I told myself I’d never go back lol. Do you work for the forest service?
I have been to tar hollow and you need to check it out again at a dryer time. It is usually not that wet. I believe I know where you came in which is a bridal trail and it does run parallel to a stream so the stream does flood the trail. If you get on the main part of the logan trail it is not that bad. But it does have many dense areas. Next time camp near the fire tower and enter trail from there.
Yeah I’m gonna go back at some point. I plan on doing the whole Logan trail, just haven’t done it yet. Thanks for tuning in.
Still no bacon... 😜 I've never been to Tar Hollow but it doesn't sound fun... Maybe in the Fall or Winter. Have a good time in Dolly Sods. That's a really cool place to backpack.
I’m not gonna lie to you I’m really slacking on the bacon. I even bought a little backpacking grill for it lol
@@Bacon_N_Backpacking 😂
LOOKS LIKE YOU HAD A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE THAT IS WHY YOU ARE MAKING THESE VIDEOS FOR PEOPLE TO LEARN SARA DID A GREAT JOB FILMING THE BUTTERFLIES THEY WERE BEAUTIFUL HOPE YOU DIDNT GET TOO MUDDY AND WET ENJOYED YOUR VIDEO LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR NEXT ONE BYE FOR NOW
Thanks for being my most diligent subscriber mom 😂
Great video. Sucks they don't take care of that section. Must be why it's a free camping spot.
Yeah it was 💩 if I’m being honest lol
I was at vesuvius last week. It was exactly like that. All 18 miles.
I’ve only been to Vesuvius once. Lakeshore trail is where it’s at. The backpacking trail is pretty meh. I want to go there when all the leaves are off I think.
Never been to Tar Hollow. I need to check it out.
Don’t go to Camp Dullen lol
On the bright side…. Wildcat probably doesn’t look so bad now.
lol that’s what I was telling Sara. I honestly didn’t hate Wildcat Hollow. The blowdowns were annoying, but I could deal with it. The worst part of wildcat was packing up near dark in wind and rain and re-locating. Not the trails fault but it put me in a bad mood lol
Here’s an idea. If you don’t like the place go to a nice cushy park like Hocking. You won’t be missed
Here’s an idea, nobody asked for your opinion, go away.
What brand water bottle holder is that on your strap?
Zpacks
Looked like gorgeous area but rugged hiking. Sucks it didn’t turn out how you thought it would.
Yeah the campsite was the big bummer. Literally nowhere to chill, grass was knee high in most places. Tons of ticks and snakes. We just sat on the top of a picnic table for an hour then went to sleep lol
Hey B&B what chest rig is that?
Hill People Gear Original Kit Bag. Been using it for about a year and it’s awesome.
