Solo Backpacking Morrison Run, PA

- Welcome back for another backpacking adventure! This is the first solo trip I've done in quite a while and it did not disappoint. I lucked out with the forecast, with a high in the low 70's and low temps in the mid 50's. I'll definitely take that for a Pennsylvania trip in the last third of August! There wasn't a drop of precipitation to be seen and there was a slight breeze during most of my hiking to keep things nice and comfortable.
I was hesitant going back to the Allegheny National Forest after my previous trip there. About two weeks prior to the recording of this video, Sara and I did a backpacking trip along the Tracy Ridge trail in the Allegheny National Forest. That trail was overgrown the majority of the way and we had a group campground experience that turned the trip into the worst overnighter I've ever done.
WIth that trip fresh in my mind, I put it all behind me and started hiking along the beautiful fern covered forest. Allegheny National Forest doesn't have any amazing mountain views, enormous waterfalls like you would find in West Virginia or Virginia, but the forest itself makes for good hiking. I hiked along the Rimrock trail as well as Morrison Run Trail. There were sections of large rock formations, beautiful fern cover, mossy rocks along the streams and some very pretty old growth forest.
Towards the end of the first day, I decided to take a peek down at the Allegheny Reservoir. I was hoping to get some beautiful shots of the lake as I did during my previous trip here. Unfortunately, it's boating season and the group campground was completely full. It was swamped to the point that I couldn't even make my way down to the beach to set up my tripod. Undeterred, I pressed on an hour before sunset in search of a dispersed site to stay at. I was very happy to find a nice site along Morrison Run where I set up my hammock.
I decided to talk about some of my gear while at camp such as my cooking system, my new camp shoes and of course, my brand new dyneema tarp from Hammock Gear! I'll be getting much more in depth with my new tarp in a future episode, but I wanted to give all the viewers a first look at this awesome (and expensive) piece of gear. In the near future, I'll be doing a video reviewing ALL of the gear I take on trips and how much it weighs. I've been very pleased with my ultralight setup that I'm carrying in my Zpacks Nero 38L pack, so I want to share it with all of you.
Day two I hiked out along Morrison Run and got some good shots along the stream. There was some beautiful old growth forest blanketed in ferns the last mile or so and it was a nice biome change from the rest of the trip. Overall, this was a great solo trip and I'm glad you all decided to tag along!

Really beautiful. Glad this one turned out better than the last one did.
Thanks, there was a night a day difference between the last two Allegheny trips lol
This was soo good! Some really really great shots throughout bud, trail looks simply picturesque! 👏👏
It’s a good trail for a low key overnighter, thanks for tuning in.
This was a very nice video. You did an excellent job explaining your equipment and the scenery was gorgeous a lot of moss and alot of fernes in the woods. The water shots at the end of the videowere gorgeous. Glad you had good neighbors camping this time. Loved the litttle waterfall you know me and waterfalls. So glad you had a good time and I am sure this video will help other campers who might like to take this trip. Enjoyed it a lot.
It was a much better trip than my last one in Allegheny for sure.
Another awesome video. Very cool
Thanks for watching James, we’ll have to catch you on another trip soon.
Wonderful videos! I'm happy I found your channel. We're planning on backpacking here over 4th of July (probably not the best weekend, but I'm limited to time off from work). Our first thought was Tracy Ridge - soooo glad I watched your video first! This one looks much nicer!
Yeah, Tracy Ridge was scary bad lol. I have a friend who went there twice and liked it. Idk if their trail maintenance has gone downhill or if I randomly showed up at a bad time. My only experience with it was very bad lol. Don’t plan on staying at the boat in sites at Morrison unless you want to be in a tent city surrounded by drunks.
awesome trip man!
Thanks for watching!
Rock on man!
Oh hi there lol
awesome!
Thanks for tuning in!
Another fine video. I like the open forest. Definitely not the "I can't see the forest for the trees"...lol.
On a sad type note the largest tree in West Virginia came crashing down on Sunday. It was a huge Sycamore that had rotted from the inside out. I have memories of this tree and the times spent there that date back 50 years. Good news is the new largest tree is only about 10 miles away. However, the bad news is it on private land with no public access. I had hiked by this now fallen tree, drove by it and rode past it on horseback, and just hung out there.
Where was the tallest one located?
Viola in Marshall County, in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia. The closest town that someone may heard of is Wheeling, more than 20 miles away.@@Bacon_N_Backpacking
@@ronosmianski812 Gotcha, I’m very familiar with Wheeling. Sad the tree came down though.
@@Bacon_N_Backpacking Me too. Thanks.
Wow, it gets dark suddenly in PA! 😆
But seriously, I'm planning a canoe trip to one of those lakeside sites in October. I was wondering what they were like, but I suspect in October they won't be quite as busy.
I have a video up on the channel from my trip there last October. I think there were 3-4 other people at the group campground and that’s it.
I reread your question and realized you asked about the tallest tree, not the biggest. Height, girth and crown size are combined into a measurement to determine the biggest tree. The tallest tree is in Greenbriar County, WV. Sorry about the confusion on my part.
Oh, when you said largest I just assumed tallest lol. Didn’t know they broke it down like that, interesting to know though for sure.
Tracy Ridge is amazing. Do you even backpack bro? Full of nature, untouched by human hands and it’s patriotic! What more could you want?
I just wanted to not eat branches for 15 miles.
Looks like a relaxing trip! What weight shock cord did you use for your tarp?
It’s 3/32 shock cord from HG
Hi Again! I'm trying to determine where the area you camped is in proximity to the designated campgrounds. So did you hike the trail from the parking lot clockwise or counter clockwise? Or, when looking at the map with the trail head/parking lot at top and the designated campground on the bottom, did you camp to the right or left of them? I hope my question isn't too confusing!! Thanks for any info you can provide.
The GPX file is linked in the description box. Download it and open it with whatever GPS app you use. Gaia would probably have the most compatibility. I marked a ton of campsites on there. And just for you, I changed the waypoint for the one you’re asking about to yellow lol.
@@Bacon_N_Backpacking You're the best - Thanks!!!
