Hammock Camping Allegheny National Forest

  • We're back with another backpacking adventure in Pennsylvania! This is my second trip to Minister Creek in the Allegheny National Forest, PA. This is one of the shortest backpacking loops you can possibly do, it's a total of only six miles. This is a great trip for beginners to get a feel for backpacking as well as test out their hiking and camping gear.
That is precisely what this trip was all about. One of my friends that I met via our Facebook group wanted to take his son out on his first trip. Some of you have probably tried to get family members or friends to get into the backpacking hobby with you, only for them to hate it. Typically, this is because of a few main factors. A lot of times that person isn't in shape, their gear is too heavy, the trail is too hard or they aren't comfortable living in the backcountry. A short mileage trip like this is an easy way to ease someone into the hobby.
Despite being a short trail, Minister Creek offers a decent experience. The creek that the trail is named after breaks up the forest with some nice scenery. There are a lot of established campsites near the creek which makes water management easy. Pretty much any site you come across is well established with plenty of flat ground and a fire ring. The only downside is that every campsite is picked clean of fallen wood due to the popularity of Minister Creek.
Being a short trip, my pack was super light weighing in at less than 14 pounds fully loaded with food and water. With the warmer weather being here, I've had a chance to use my new pack, the Zpacks Nero 38L quite a bit. I wasn't sure how well I'd like a frameless pack with no hip belt, but as long as you keep an ultralight loadout, the pack works great.
Speaking of gear, I finally purchased a CNOC Vecto 2L water bag to replace my Sawyer Squeeze bags. I love how easy it is to scoop up water compared to the Sawyer. With that being said, I've only used this bag twice and it developed a pinhole on this trip. The hole was so small that it would only leak water if you squeezed it. I still find this to be unacceptable for a brand new product. Apparently, this is a common issue these bags have, so hopefully CNOC can step up the QC.
Check out the gear I brought along for this trip!

Seeing your friend and his son reminds me of when I took my son backpacking for the first time. He was 7 and we went to Zaleski. We got a hell of a thunderstorm, and he slept through the whole thing. That was 1999.

Don't know that it's worth the six hours round trip to drive, but yeah it's alright lol

Good video BnB, was hoping to see guys make the creek crossing after your overnighter. When I was there the creek water was fairly high it didn't help that I didn't scope out a shallower spot
