  • MASTERCLASS 8: This lesson on The 'Caged System' explains how to use the 5 open chord shapes; C,A,G,E,D up and down the fret board to create different chord inversions. Without this system, George Harrison would never have written Here Comes The Sun! It's something you really need to know so download your free paperwork and learn something that's really going to enhance your playing: Here's the link: www.bluenoteguitarschool.com/...

For nearly a year now have been trying to make some sense of the CAGED system given up several times with no hope of learning this.
Seen this video and within 5 minutes of Rob explaining in simple terms everything fell into place sort of.
At least now I can see the basic bones of this system and how it is supposed to work.
    Thanks Rob
Learning here comes the Sun at the moment.
Just finished the Two of us.

Another great lesson rob! Been doing this, empirically for years, but explained by you, perfect.
Have you considered doing a lesson on the 'L' shape of Bar chords in a key, i.e. C barred at the 3rd fret, (A shape), G barred at the 3rd fret, (E shape), and F barred at the 1st, E shape.
When I discovered this, I found it really liberating, but I'm sure you could explain it way better than I ever could, ( amazingly, works with minor chords too).
Please keep doing what you're doing, you're a breath of fresh air, in a maze of internet tutors who seem to be there for their benefit more than anything else.
    👍👍

Many thanks ,Rob . Very nicely and simply explained . I have previously attempted to learn the ,CAGED system from other channels . They may as well have been talking Chinese . Thanks for the capo tip as well , I broke my left forefinger many years ago , and it set permanently curved , so about as much use as a handbrake on a canoe . Thanks again , I feel some practice coming on . Take care , and catch you soon .

Rob, in 1984 aged 17 I got a book called How To Play Guitar in Hessys. I plinked and plonked for five years then gave up when I met my future wife. I’ve always had a guitar, and knew a few chord shapes, but never put the effort in to understand the book. Your videos have reignited a passion. Thank you so much. I wish I could’ve sat with you for an hour in the Skelhorne St Bus station caff back in 1984, you would’ve save me 40 years of grief 😅

I’ve watched a few videos on the caged system but this one is bar far the easiest to understand, well explained, I still think though if you play say a D up the neck and it sounds just like the D on the 2nd fret why not just play the normal one on the second fret, it sounds just the same, I agree though it’s good to learn the caged system as it will help when playing lead guitar, thanks rob for this 👍

With the popularity of the CA.G.E.D system being taught. I think the way chords are being taught should also change. And that would be to have the Index Finger free to Barre. So a C Chord would be Middle , Ring and Pinky. If you have been playing the C for year the regular way with the Index on 2nd fret of the B. Making that Barre is real hard.

Great lesson, Rob. A good few things dropped into place from this. One thing I am struggling with though is the finger positions in the C shape where you explained the MK progression in Sultans. I've watched that section several times but I seem to have a blind spot in understanding that. Can't make it sound anything like those chord tones. Not sure what I'm missing. It would be appreciated if you could spell out the finger/fret positions so I can see what I am doing wrong. No worries if you have moved on from this. It will force me to work it out.
