How to Show Hidden Files on Mac | Apple Mac Tutorial

In this Apple Mac Tutorial, we take a look at how to show hidden files on a Mac. In Sierra and later there's a new super simple shortcut key (SHIFT+CMD+.) that you can use. Or in older versions you can use the Terminal commands below.
Show Hidden Files:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
Hide Hidden Files:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles NO
Don't forget to relaunch Finder or else the changes won't take effect.

How to unhide them permanently? after unhiding they still look hazy? Is there way yo make them clearly visible?
That's it!!.... IT'S Shift+ Command + Period(.)... Saved your time!! Works even on Mac OS Mojave
This command change to normal after I reboot the Mac. Assume I showed hidden files, then when I shut down the Mac and Restart again, I can not see the hidden Files. May be this is happening due to my OS version.

Helped a lot. The way I had to view invisible files/folders on my 2012 Macbook Pro... I had to go to the "Force Quit Applications" window by pressing Option, Command, Q and Esc keys, then click on the Relaunch for the Finder from there.... after using your Terminal command. Using the Terminal command alone, didn't make everything visible.
my (All My Files) icon thing is gone in the left side do you know how i can put that back up ?
Hi, I have tried both the CMD+CTRL+. and the CLI command, "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES" with no success. After the CLI command I did the relaunch of the finder as you illustrated but it did not change the dimmed folders which were hidden to bright visible unhidden status. I am running Mac OSX Mojave at present. Any tips? WHen I try the CMD+CTRL+. shortcut, ithe finder window seems to loose focus to who knows ehere but still no joy.

OK, that was interesting. How about this? I'm trying to stop my usb from creating duplicates when using it on a tv. Everything is fine on the Mac, but moving it to a tv "creates" duplicates. Can't find any answers that work, yet...

Apple is so stingy with the music you've already bought, they put it in hidden files on the older
ipods so you can't take it off, and the only way to get it is to show the hidden files. I just switched over to a Mac less than a year ago, so THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH FOR THIS!
Now I can grab my old music off of my old ipod and put it permanently on my new computer.

I followed your instructions, and the hidden files are showing semi-transparent when i click on "Macintosh HD"; but I don't see the hidden files when I go to the individual photo file folders. Am I doing something wrong? All I wanted was to be able to delete those "duplicates" iMac makes of every picture, video, etc.

Ok so I have a brand new Mac sitting in front of me and I tried the quick method and that didn’t work so I did the terminal version and went to right click the terminal and it doesn’t offer that option to relaunch. So I restarted my computer instead to see if it would do the job and it did. So far so good thanks

If this command doesn't work for you, just give it try with true/false instead of YES/NO. For example
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles true
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles false

how do you delete the hidden files?
I have an SSD & Normal Hard Drive (2 TB) in my Macbook pro. Operating System is installed on my SSD. Can I hide my entire 2 TB Hard Drive with this technique? I want to hide my hard drive so that other users can't see my files. Stay fine.

I'm running MAC OS High Sierra and the shift command period doesn't work for me. It just makes the window bigger or smaller.

Ello Dere only if you know what you’re deleting, for instance, I use to delete AE and Premiere Pro cache files to free up space on my hard drive. But if you’re deleting important system files that’s not good

Hi There, how will i hide the specific file? Let's say in windows, if you want to hide specific file you just need to right click the file then there is an option "Hidden,Read only..etc" once you click that the file will get hide.
Any something similar like that in Mac??

So, I may be wrong here but I looked this up a bit ago and I think it involves Terminal commands. However I think I remember hiding a folder is easier than a file, so you can put files into hidden folders to hide them 🤷🏻♂️

I really like how easy it is to follow the video :D. I do have a small problem, I don't see the movies, music and Macintosh HD folders (drivers). Do you know how to reach them?
not sure about movies + music, but to get to the modern equivalent of the Macintosh HD folder, go to the menu bar at the top of the screen for Finder, then
Go -> Computer -> Apple SSD
that should work :)
