    Washington is one of the only teams in the NHL where an underperforming Dubois is a massive upgrade in the center position, yes they were that bad, now playing with Ovie instead of 3rd or 4th liners and with more ice time who knows, maybe he’ll go back to 60 points or more.
    The Caps aren’t in any position to become contenders again, Dubois and Wilson’s contracts won’t be a problem once they end up rebuilding after Ovechkin’s eventual retirement.
    Let’s be honest, the Caps are the Ovie breaks records no matter what bandwagon and not much else nowadays.

      @benoitrobitaille5235 27 дней назад +1

      I wouldn’t say this is a giving up move, but a this is what we can do move.
      For Washington to be contending they would need to fight Father Time and win at least temporarily, too many veterans costing way too much for what they bring.
      But who knows, 1 cheap good goaltender, a solid defense, a couple good free agents upfront and a few prospects shining at league minimum and Washington is back, despite dem Vets.

    • @gabrielrockman
      @gabrielrockman 27 дней назад +1

      He's not a massive upgrade in the center position. I don't even think he's an upgrade over Strome. I think Strome is slightly better.
      I think Dubois is an upgrade for their power play, where defense isn't as important. But for 5 on 5, I prefer Strome over Dubois.

    • @benoitrobitaille5235
      @benoitrobitaille5235 27 дней назад +2

      Oh yes he is, without Dubois Washington 2C is either McMichael, Lapierre, Dowd or Protas.
      These guys are either not ready yet or not 2C material at all.
      Dubois being better or not than Strome is irrelevant in the sense that the center group is strengthened no matter who end up 1C or 2C between the two.

    Caps fan from germany here :)
    I think it's a good trade. The caps don't need Kuemper anymore with Lindgren ans Sheppard (hopefully) in net next season. But they needed someone to take a (backup-) goalie with his cap-hit, so they need to take a risk and gamble on Dubois. We will see how he will fit in, cause the Caps lineup changed a lot (and for good) at the end of the season. You have many young promising players (Lapierre, McMichael, Miroshnichenko, Iorio etc) and i guess Dubois could fit in very well, if he finds his motivation. Even if he won't live up to his contract, the caps will be in a more or less rebuild the next years, where his cap won't hurt that much.
    In my opinion it's a good trade with many chances. Maybe we got our 1st or 2nd line center for a good couple of years, maybe not. For me, i'm thrilled to see what the caps look like and how they'll play next season.

    Capitals fan here. I honestly think this trade can be a win-win. We found our goalie of the future so it made sense to move on from Darcy. LA gets what they need in a seasoned and skilled goalie as well. I really liked him though and I wish him well in LA! He was a class act 🤌🏻 when it comes to PLD, I think that we just have to keep him happy and what would make someone happy? Putting him on the line with the greatest (albeit aging) greatest goal scorer of all time. This is also pretty much PLD’s last shot. If he doesn’t make it work in Washington he will never get a good opportunity ever again. He MUST play inspired hockey and give forth effort. If he doesn’t, no one will want him. So I think the caps will get a guy that will play with a little fire under him and maybe see something we haven’t out of PLD! At least I’m hopeful of that. So, with that being said, it should work out for both sides. It at least fills the needs for LA and DC.

I know he said Kuemper was with us in 2017-18, but at that time we still had prime Quick in net (which was arguably his last good season in L.A.) and ended up getting traded halfway through because Jack Campbell was NHL ready.

    I feel like people are over-stating how bad Kuemper is. He had a bad year last year but prior to that he's been pretty damn solid. LA also plays a system that is very goaltender friendly. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Kuemper bounce back with the Kings and be a solid 1A/1B goaltender, which is exactly what they need. And the thing is, even if Kuemper is a total bust with the Kings he only has a couple years left on his deal - The Kings could ship him off to a rebuilding team after next season and retain salary for the last 2 years of his contract if needed and that really wouldn't be the end of the world. Kings get rid of PLD while addressing their need for goaltending - Pretty happy as a Kings fan

    As a Kings fan, I was more disappointed in the coaching staff on how they played PLD. Sticking a guy you think will be a top-line center with a rookie all year as the third-line center because you do not trust him as much as Kopi and Danault. I am glad Todd McLellan is gone as he does not trust anybody new on his team and treats the new players like shit if they do not hustle 210 feet. PLD is not a 2-way centerman yet, so from day one, this was a bad coach for him. I think the Caps will be happy with PLD. He will bring speed.
    Even with what I said above, I am happy with this trade. I do not see the Kings changing their 1/3/1 system, so somebody with speed who doesn't play D is just a liability for the team. An 8.5 Million Dollar Cap hit is too much for somebody who will be misused. Saving 3+ million in cap space will allow us to resign Roy to a long-term deal

Could be a good get if he hits that untapped ceiling especially for a team heading for a rebuild, but this could also backfire tremendously. Great vid as always!

    As a Caps fan I'm content with the move. Although I firmly believe that Kuemper will bounce back next season, you cannot be paying your backup goalie 5.25 million a season and I understand the desire to cut ties. The Caps had a big hole at top-line center, (ideally Dylan Strome should be a 2C). Dubois has a lot of term so there's certainty about his contract, (unlike someone like Ehlers, another player the Caps were targeting). Obviously, tons of risk for both sides, but I think that it's a move both teams needed to make and they were the only trade partners for one another who could swallow the contracts in play.

    I think while LA fans should be thrilled to be rid of that contract as they’re moving into an era where they should be competing, I feel like this trade isn’t the disaster for the Capitals that people seem to feel. They are in a position where gambling on potential upside isn’t that big of a deal, especially if that upside is potential scoring help, which they massively struggled with. They’ve had a ton of salary come off the books and will be moving towards a more thorough rebuild. Would have been nice if LA could have thrown in an extra pick, but oh well.
    I will say the one thing that is a bummer about it is one of the bright spots for the Capitals this season was young centers stepping up. McMichael and Lapierre probably deserved more time next year that now they probably won’t get.

    Low key steal by the Caps IMO. PLD roll on the team is going to be 'get Ovi the puck' for the next two years. He should bounce back, and if he doesn't, well it is an unmovable contract on a team who should be attempting to bottom out in the next 2-3 years so his $8.5 helps the team hit the cap floor.

    There's a chance that this trade works out well for the Capitals, but most likely it's going to cripple their efforts to rebuild after Ovechkin and Carlson retire. Dubois has the upside to be a #1 Center, but he's probably not going to play that way. I would still prefer Strome to be the top line Center, and not Dubois. Although I have to admit that Ovechkin - Dubois - Wilson is a big and fast line. It would have two guys prone to being lazy on defense, though.
    I don't think the Capitals will do this, but I think the best move for the Capitals and Dubois is to put him back at Left Wing, and put him next to another French Canadian in Hendrix Lapierre. The Capitals have plenty of depth at center, and they need wingers. The Capitals have plenty of top 6 or top 9 forwards, but they don't have anyone who belongs on the top line. Ovechkin, Strome, Dubois, and Wilson are all solid 2nd line players, but none are good enough to be a top line forward. Lapierre and Miroshnichenko are NHL ready prospects, but they look to be solid 2nd line players, and not top line players. Leonard and Cristall at least still look like they could be top line forwards, but they're still at least a year away from being NHL ready.
    If the Capitals do want to use Dubois at Center, I think that means that they're trading their RFA McMichael, which is a bummer, or that they're trading Dowd, which makes sense because he's older and he has one year left on his contract. I thought that McMichael and Protas did better in the first half when they played together (and with Mantha) than they did after Mantha was traded and they were often separated. McMichael, Protas, Mantha was a solid second or third line. Dowd and Malenstyn played well together on the fourth line. The Capitals have fantastic depth at forward on their roster and at Hershey. They just don't have any top line caliber forwards.
    The Capitals' main problem was not their 2nd through 4th lines. Their two main problems were their poor top line and their poor performance on their power play. Dubois has the potential to change that. But unless he surprises us, he won't play to his potential, and he'll give the Capitals more of what they have plenty of - solid second line caliber players.
    The Capitals are paying Wilson and Dubois like they're top line players, but both guys are overpaid and are really more of a 2nd line player. At least Dubois is much younger than Wilson and has much more upside than Wilson. But both are under contract for a long time. Dubois does have the upside to be worth his contract, but it's hard to expect that out of him. Ovechkin is also overpaid now, but his contract is nearly up, and he wasn't overpaid for most of his contract.
    I do like that Shepard will be given a chance to be a backup in the NHL. He's earned it.

    Can't believe Caps didn't force some retention on Kings for this. 8.5 mil for 7 years!? yes they need more centers and more scoring but I doubt that PLD will be worth his cap hit of 8.5 and it will not be movable due to length. They did good finding a way to offload Keumper, I was worried about that since trade deadline, but now they have even more cap space locked up for a longer term. At this point I am just struggling to think of any trade the Capitals have "won".

    Right now, I'm trying very hard to ignore the "LOL Browns" taunts from Yinzer Penguins fans. I get why the Capitals signed Kuemper back then, but I did not like the contract terms ($5.25M over 5 years for a then-32 year old who had been known as a decent backup up till then). I always knew it was a matter of time before Kuemper fell back down from his red-hot Avalanche run, and honestly, if not for Lindgren's performance, the Capitals barely even made it to the playoffs at all this year.
    I'm kind of willing to give Dubois a chance over here. Our center depth is very thin beyond Dylan Strome and Connor McMichael. There is a high chance Backstrom never takes the ice again, and even with potential reinforcements coming in, primarily Hendrix Lapierre after putting on a banger in Hershey, I will take any help just to ensure we can roll on all 4 lines. $8.5M in the books for the next 7 years, though ... as if Yinzers aren't lacking in ammo to laugh at us.

    I see a lot of people saying LA won this trade so far but I think Darcy Kuemper rebounding at his age and considering his last couple years is a bigger gamble than PLD who is going to have a bigger role and at least give 40-50 points with the trade-off of him being an absolute tumor in the locker room. LA has bigger expectations right now than Washington does so the Kings are relying on him to play at a much higher level than Washington probably will be of PLD.

    • @Jeg186
      @Jeg186 27 дней назад

      What I'm saying. It's a win-win trade for caps if PLD finds his game and he's still only 25. Kuemper is on the wrong side of 30s and on the decline. This move is about tending younger with actual nhl talent. Worth the added 3 mil for a younger player over an aging on the decline goalie who hasn't shown high tier talent before. Kumper was always a bad signing in my opinion. Kumper just cashed on winning the cup with a very good Colorado team, his numbers weren't even solid. Just very average on a deep avalanche team. Also good luck on LA to trade him away in years 4-5 when his performance takes a nose dive off a cliff. He was nowhere to be found when lindgrin outperformed him with the same D core everyone complains about. PLD will have some value somewhere especially if he gets back to 60 or better points season. His value instantly spikes up. The captain will be getting on him for getting his crap together on and off the ice. Just look at what happened to mantha this past season

    It’s a huge gamble by the caps. PLD was so bad this year that it would be hard for him to replicate it and it does help that he’s got far less competition on the caps than he did in LA. At the end of the day though it all hinges on him and how he decides to approach the situation. Either turn things around or continue to be labelled as a guy who’s work ethic and attitude is cancerous. Time will tell.

    They got DuBois to run Capfriendly.

    As a caps fan i think Washington gave up nothing for a lottery ticket. Kuemper was great initially but now hes a 5m backup and had negative value. Dubois at worst is a bad contract but i think his floor is a good 3C. Dubois though has a lot of untapped potential and i think which with carbery behind the bench it could make for a less stressful environment for him. If dubois becomes a 60 point center for us on average we robbed LA and if he ever hits 80 we won the lottery. The contract is a lot but i view as 3x at 3m (kuemper was 5) and then 4x8. Those first 3 seasons he'll be better value wise than if we kept kuemper. Its about those back 4 years. We should be going into a full rebuild by then though and if not that means hes a big reason why. In those back 4 years at least we'll have an entertaining player to watch even if hes worse by then.

    I hope PLD bounces back and has a 70 point season. Cause it would be so funny

      he'd need to make an effort in order to do that, which he is clearly unwilling to do.

    As a caps fan, I hate this move. Now we have to play Protas, McMicheal, and Lapiere on the 3rd and 4th line where they won't develop, and we need offense which PLD brings the opposite of (and an awful back check). Plus losing DK with no salary retention, this is awful...

      From everything I've seen so far of the roster, most people have Protas slotted in as 2nd line LW. And why are you complaining about getting out from under Keumper's contract? Yeah, 8.5 is 3.25 more than what DK was making, but think about this: we were paying 5.25 for a BACKUP goaltender when we have both Stevenson and Shepherd waiting in Hershey for an opportunity on cheap contracts. If, and this a MASSIVE if, PLD even comes close to how he played in Columbus or Winnipeg, we win this trade 9 times outta 10.

      CMM is nowhere ready to be 2C. He's fine at 3C for now and Protas has been playing wing for a couple of seasons now and Lappy isn't wasted on the wing like CMM is. Ryan Leonard most likely joins the team in 24-25 and Oshie is virtually already retired. There are spots available for the younger guys.

    Is this PLD’s last chance? So much potential, only 25, so messed up. He will rebound offensively, but is not a #1 center yet.
