  • We react to "AKATSUKI" by BABYMETAL as performed live and reviewed in Ueno Park, Tokyo.

All music and imagery is used under fair usage laws. We do not own the songs that we review and we talk all over them anyway, so we hope this encourages people to go out there and listen to the artists and buy official music and merchandise.

This performance really highlights how fearless Su is as a performer. She is out in the middle of the arena, no musicians around her, and delivers the song with total confidence. That would bother a lot of singers. She reminds me of a metal Judy Garland in that regard.
There is a story of Su when she was in the group previous to Babymetal, Karen Girl's. They performed at the Saitama Super Arena, 25,000 fans. Su was in 5th or 6th grade. The other two girls in the group were nervous and had to be handled by the staff. When it came time to perform, they had to wake Su up. She was bored and took a nap.

    ⚡ 💀 💕 / 🔥 🔴 🌙 🔥
I've said it before, but Su doesn't need to fear any of the pyrotechnics because she is fire herself.
That solo (and Rondo of Nightmare from the same concert) are what sold me on BABYMETAL.
Before that I liked them, and thought the whole idea was super cute, but seeing Su in full Metal Queen mode took my fandom to another level.
    Another cool thing about 'Akatsuki'.
It's written by combining the characters for "Red" and "Moon".
Which helps explain the red moon imagery BABYMETAL uses in many of their concerts.
In the track listing the character "Kurenai" is used instead of "Red", probably as a tribute to the X-Japan song with that name.

Disclaimer (for those who might infer things from the basic meaning of the kanji): This song is not about menstruation. ;)

@0okamino Now I've got that in my head. : )
      Du-metal has it as follows:
"Akatsuki" is a contraction of "akai tsuki" (= red moon). The moon looks red when it is low in the sky (because the thicker atmosphere scatters more of blue spectrum just like sunset), and the full moon is near the horizon at dawn (& dusk). The time just before dawn is also called "akatsuki" (暁), but their etymologies differ.

The intensity with which she performs this song - at 16 y.o. in the case of this performance - always amazes me. And seeing her perform it live last year gave me goosebumps!
Great reaction and analysis, already looking forward to the next one!

Thank you! I did actually cut a bit where I talked about her singing because I wasn't sure how to approach it. I think her voice, stage presence and professionalism is totally jaw-dropping considering her age. Being objective, I would argue her voice is not as powerful as many say, it is extremely well trained though. To me, I really want to see her do this again in 6 or 7 years time when her voice has "grown in" so to speak. I think she could possibly be on that Ayaka level of power by then. Thanks for your comment :D

@@BakaBreakdown I love her voice, as it's straight forward - no unnecessary 'embellishments', clear and contrasts beautifully with the music. And, when experienced live, it really carries on top of the music with a beautiful 'ring'. Her voice has already developed a lot, compared to this show, which was five years ago. But, as much as I love her voice, I would never compare her to someone like, for instance, Floor Jansen.... ;-)

@@MrFloppyHare Yes, I DID just google Floor Jansen :D !!! Beautiful voice, I think Ayaka (although non-metal) will always be my bench mark, but I respect this choice greatly. Fantastic. As for dear 'ol Su, I actually agree that the straight forwardness is one of her biggest strengths. She carries the melody and lets the show be the show. I also would argue that her pitch control is amongst the best. I know record companies in Japan really ram home the training on youngsters, but not all pick it up so well. Listen to AKB and tell me how many are in tune lol. I think Su has a career ahead, however things develop, if she just relies on her ability to deliver material with the flawless quality displayed here.

@@BakaBreakdown Floor is amazing, isn't she?! Nightwish (with Floor - they've had two other singers before her) is another favorite band of mine. Watch and listen to anything from "Wacken 2013", it's an epic show. Some of my favorites are "Song of Myself", "Story Time", "Romanticide" and "Ghost Love Score". Would love to see a reaction to any of those from you.
About Su's pitch control: yes, that is indeed one of her strong points. From a young age, she was known as "the girl with the perfect pitch". Which confuses some people when they watch some BABYMETAL performances, accusing her of lip-syncing. Even more crazy is, that with most songs, she does that while also dancing. ;-)

Just to ring in a bit about Su's vocals...From her very earliest performances, I noticed right away that she has the most perfect vibrato I think I have ever heard. If you listen to the Akatsuki intro part at Tokyo Dome, and listen carefully, it will blow your mind that it's live. It's funny how people have baselines for vocalists and mine happens to be Amy Lee. She's incredible IMO. And what's funny about that is in the last 3 days I've heard (in reaction videos) Su compared to Amy Lee about 12 times and all in high regards. It's obvious she has a golden future ahead of her. It's the only thing she's ever wanted to do and she's damn good at it...

Wow, you are really getting those BM reactions out fast now. If I didn't know any better I might think you are a fan. :-)
I agree with your verdict, there are a lot of things that this song does right. To be honest, I can't think of anything it doesn't. One thing I particularly love about it is how Su's voice cut's through everything like a knife (including my heart during the first verse).

Making a favorites list of Babymetal songs is not so easy for many. :-)
Lots of fans actually have favorite performances of certain songs higher than their favorite songs.
I think that shows their quality.
Thank you for still doing these even though you clearly still haven't been able to fix your home Internet situation is my guess. ;-)

Thank you, that's so kind! I do agree, I think I would maybe benefit from the fact that I usually look at the songs more then the performances, which is why I recently did that "live video" request. I agree though, some songs shine in some renditions, more than others. I will maybe pain myself over a list if I think the video is genuinely interesting enough to post, and if I can make interesting points. As for my home internet, yes, it's a total mess. The camera however was more of a laziness issue. I did get my lovely camera back but I decided to do some outdoor reactions because I'm in this beautiful country afterall! However, lazy me forget the good camera and just did it anyway ;) . Thanks again for this great insight.

Enjoyed your reaction again , Su puts so much into her performance one of my favorites songs . I can not decide between this performance or the Wembley performance of this song if you going to have another listen here is a link to that performance.

On the 10th of May there's a new single out...can't wait for you to react to it :) SU's stage presence is out of the ordinary. She IS the queen, no doubt about it! ;)

Nice park - and a good reaction, thanks for doing another so soon. It does seem you listened more to this song as a whole first before, or rather than, breaking it all down to the individual elements which led to a better analysis than you did for Megitsune (in my opinion of course). I agree with a lot of what you say (for example on where guitar solos stand and what they add or don't add to songs) and the other comments on this reaction (in particular the ones from autohmae and FloppyHares about Su's voice and having favourite performances of some songs people might rate even above their favourite songs) reflect entirely my own thoughts, so I won't just repeat them, they said it for me.
