I run the AC when it's cold outside. The compressor puts load on the engine, increasing engine warmup speed. The AC system also dries the air, so the windshield won't get foggy.
If your A/C is low it is because there is a leak. Refrigerant doesn't just disappear thats why it takes 7 years for it to dissipation in the atmosphere. Also that bottle you bought at pep boys doesn't contain any refrigerant at all. You need a licence to purchase refrigerant. That bottle will make your ac blow cold temporarily, but it can also damage your A/C system since the oil in the system is carried by the refrigerant, and when there is none the compressor will get very unhappy. Many shops will use a gas analyzer to identify the bull shit from that can in the system and then tell you to go to another shop because connecting their A/C machine will contaminate it.
I have to disagree on your point about needing a license. You can go into Walmart and buy a can of R134a (automobile and appliance refrigerant) all day long. No license required. You do, however, need an EPA card to purchase refrigerants such as R22, R410, R404 ...etc.
@@davidb7180 As far as I know as of 2018 you need a licence to get anymore than 2 lbs of r134a in the US. Most other countries care a little more about the environment and have very strict guidelines on all sales of refrigerants, and repair of A/C systems.

5:58 Those packets in beef jerky are a mix of table salt and iron filings. They're only a dessicant in the sense that the tiny amount of salt absorbs some if the moisture in the jerky to start rusting the iron. The rust absorbs any oxygen in the bag of jerky, keeping bacteria from breathing.
my neighbor would add refrigerant to his car every month. we told him he has a leak but he insisted it was burning it instead of leaking it... he was crazy dumb. he could had fixed it properly with the money he spends on the monthly refrigerant top offs
4:20 It's actually the opposite. The liquid that expands into a gas, does so by absorbing energy from the environment.Gasses have more internal kinetic energy than liquids so the liquid needs to absorb energy to turn into gas(evaporate),that energy needed to turn into a gas is called latent heat. When heat is absorbed by the liquid, the temperature goes down because that energy was absorbed by the liquid from the environment to increase its internal kinetic energy.
It would have been useful to mention that Evaporators are installed inside the dashboard and in 99% of cars you have to remove the dash to replace it (Or even reach for it). Great Video!
Well, in my case it's just a matter of removing a handful of bolts, and then you can pull the evaporator box from under the footwell. I could do the whole job blindfolded (except for the refrigerant recovery).
From what I learned in auto school, A/C does not run out, it does not "go low eventually" and it should not ever need to be serviced unless something breaks, also no foreign materials should ever make it's way inside the system. If it's not blowing cold air, take it in for repairs, something is wrong. Mind you, I had a 1993 Ford Escort with A/C (surprisingly) and it blew awesome cold air using the old R34 refrigerant all the way up until I had to put a new engine in the car in 2010. I'm quite sure the A/C has never been serviced in that car before that, everything looked original. So no, don't bother buying a recharge kit, waste of money, you have a leak that needs to be addressed.
The molecules in R134 are small enough to leak through the rubber hoses, so yes it can go low. Plus, the compressor shaft seal can wear and leak freon. Those "self service" AC pro kits suck because they usually contain a stop leak fluid in them, which is a pain to get out of condensers when your mechanic actually goes to fix it.
@Elon Blunt Went to school less than 10 years ago, still modern cars buddy. Mind telling me WHAT you had serviced on your car at 75,000 miles? What'd they do?
@@dangerrangerlstc I really find it hard to believe the modern car is engineered with rubber that's incapable of containing molecules in R134 or whatever fluid/gas they're designed to contain for that matter. Mind you, rubber can be formed and treated to withstand a variety of different substances under a variety of different pressures. And yeah, a leaky seal would be a reason to have it serviced, a reason it's a leaking, a reason that a recharge kit ain't gonna fix. In fact if the kit has this stop leak you're talking about, that's only gonna make matters worse later like you said.
@Elon Blunt A perfect system never needs to be recharged, household and commercial systems will run the same refrigerants for 30+ years easily. That being said, cars use hoses with fittings that tend to leak eventually due to movement/flexing. As long as the pressure within the lines are higher than atmospheric (14.7 PSI) little to no contaminants should enter the system, so this is where you can "top up the freon". If the entire system loses its charge then it has to be properly fixed, or you're just going to likely end up hurting the compressor making your repair bill even more because air [that is saturated with water], cannot be compressed! Basically automakers suggest getting this looked at during scheduled services because there is a fair chance that a fitting somewhere has/is leaking. Source: I'm an HVAC/R tech.
No no no, you guys are both wrong, "AC" stands for Arse Conflagration. Here's how it should be used in a sentence: "I went to a hot dog eating contest and slathered the meat-tube in scotch bonnet peppers, after the contest I had an AC in the porta-potty"
@@trentpatrick4727 My definition stands but is the British English definition of the acronym "AC", but in American English it's "Anal Contortion", so according to the Oxford Dictionary and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary of American English, we're both correct. ;)
Contrary to popular belief, refrigerant doesn’t get “used up” it just leaks. Ac systems are supposed to be sealed systems and sometimes they leak from wear.
A condenser exchanges the heat on the refrigerant created by the high pressure inside the compressor with the lower ambient heat, converting a high pressure gas into high pressure liquid. That's why the return line of the system is cold, there's no heat from the inside of the cabin carried to the condenser.
Couple small corrections, -Nowadays car A/C systems use HFCs (HFC-134a) rather than HCFCs (which you normally find in old central/window A/C units, I.E. HCFC-22). HFCs are soon to be phased out in favor of HFOs in car A/C. -The condenser is in front of the radiator, not behind it. So DIY guys, don't unbolt the thing in the front when trying to change engine coolant. -Car A/C systems do over time leak a small amount of refrigerant over time, but it normally isn't enough to lessen effectiveness in the system. If a significant amount of refrigerant is lost in a short amount of time, then you have a leak. I don't recommend using A/C sealers because they have a habit of clogging stuff, use UV leak dye instead to find then fix the leak. Also be sure to use the proper refrigerant type, there's a sticker underneath the hood indicating the proper type. Other than that, good video and solid explanation.

Here's what I'm making of this: Basically, we're manipulating the boiling point of the liquid inside. Boiling point is lower on the dashboard side, so any heat on that side quickly makes the liquid vaporize. In doing so, it's absorbing energy. I'm assuming latent heat is at work here too, so it's taking out more energy because it's undergoing a phase change. Then, the vapor is pressurized so that the boiling point is higher on the outside of the car. Because we've raised the boiling point, the vapor is able to reform into a liquid once it releases heat into the atmosphere. The fact that this relies on latent heat actually makes it quite similar to how we cool down by sweating, except with our bodies, we need to actually expel (and lose) water, whereas in this system you can keep recycling the same liquid. Pretty cool! EDIT: Actually, I don't think this is correct.
You forgot to talk about the oils used to lubricate the compressor and keep the piping, compressor types, refrigerant's numbering and that each manufacturer have a specific specs.... that's a few of them

EDIT: Actually, I don't think this is correct.
this is the most "cool" video a seen and made in "hot"climate,in california......

You forgot to talk about the oils used to lubricate the compressor and keep the piping, compressor types, refrigerant's numbering and that each manufacturer have a specific specs.... that's a few of them
