    In the case of the 18 inch vs the 20 inch wheel, i wish you had added the impact of the increase in circumference. I think the 20 inch would cover an extra foot per rotation but not sure to what extent that offsets the inertia

    Aluminum is 1/3 the mass of steel per volume, but it is also 1/3 the strength. So to make 2 wheels of the same design and of equal strength the aluminum rim would have to be 3 times as thick. That means they would essentially weigh the same.

  • @michaelmiller7928
    @michaelmiller7928 6 лет назад +3

    Steel wheels are also excellent on your off roading monster. More weight and wider tyres = better traction AND less ground pressure. Hell it even applies to tracks. That's why the German heavies like the the Tiger H1 were almost as fast as the American Sherman medium!

    hi guys! in one of your videos about wheels, you talked about the advantages of small-diameter wheels, and that the engine needs more force to spin large wheels. BUT doesn't a large diameter increase the speed? After all, in order to overcome the same distance on large wheels, you need less engine spin, isn't it.

    • @burakoshimazaki
      @burakoshimazaki 6 лет назад +20

      Guten Tschüss depends on whom you are asking. In Japan, the wheel is just the physical part attached to the hub, while tires are separate. In the USA, they typically refer to wheels as rims, and tires separate, or sometimes both together like you mentioned.

      No small wheels have pros and cons just like large wheels

      Yeah, this was my complaint with the video as well. By their logic, old 13 inch wheels are pretty spiffy performance pieces. :p

      Tirerack did a test with a Golf GTi. 20" vs 17". The 17" took a .5 second off 0-60 because of the weight savings. They also reported that it was noticeable more comfortable on broken pavement. Look at indy cars or nascar. small wheels / large tires.
      You need a bigger wheel to accommodate better performing brakes though. So it is a balancing act.

      ALostHappyPanda the rim is the outter part of the wheel... imagine the first wheel the caveman made for fucks sake did it have a tire

    • @alosthappypanda8574

      What would you call the tire and wheel together?

    • @alosthappypanda8574
      @alosthappypanda8574 6 лет назад

      Because in Sweden we refer to the rim as the "wheel" (Fälgar) while "wheel" (Hjul) here is tire + "wheel"

      ALostHappyPanda English has a way to say damn near everything , I know some Spanish buddies who I ask how to say something for instance the rainguards on the window and the way they tell me how to say it translates to the black thing in the window lol , just how it is bud

      The definition of a wheel is a circular object that rotates on an axle. A rim can't rotate on an axle (Because a rim has no center to be fixed to an axle). It has to be part of something that can (The wheel). Also, think of it this way. Would you think it's stupid to call the rim a barrel? "I really like those barrels you got there". Why not? By your logic, any part of the wheel can be the name of the entire thing.
      The tire and wheel together are just called the wheel. When you mount the tire, it becomes part of the wheel. It's like when you have three piece wheels. You have the wheel center, and the outer and inner rims (which includes the barrel of the wheel as well). Collectively, they're just referred to as a wheel.
