I'm unconvinced that Ova acted entirely alone in this case. While her motive for the killings makes it seem plausible, it is just as plausible that she was manipulated into believing those things, or had her already latent beliefs intensified, or even had those thoughts directly implanted into her mind, while at the same time shrouding her mind from the other two dryads. From the first time I heard that the killers in this story were all victims of memory manipulation and mind control, I figured that House Dimir had to be involved somehow, and what better time to pull off a conspiracy like this than when Lazav is presumed dead and the guild is officially desolved. It hearkens back to the before times, when House Dimir was a silent power in Ravnica. Following this line of thought, another hypothesis I have is that Alquist Proft was actually Lazav the whole time wearing the famous detective's face. This is why he absolves Etrata of suspicion so early on and continues to work closely with her afterwards. Masquerading as Proft also allows Lazav to evade suspicion (because no one would suspect the head detective on the case) while Ova spreads the mind altering spore toxin across Ravnica, with those affected by toxin murdering some of House Dimir's greatest rivals. Lazav is called the Mastermind for a reason after all; I can definitely see him pulling off something like this. This is probably all just wishful thinking on my part, seeing as House Dimir is and always has been my favorite guild, and Wizards probably didn't intend for this story to have nearly the amount of depth that I'm giving it, but it's fun to speculate. I do seem to recall some mention of Lazav and Etrata planning a future coup on Ravnica back in War of the Spark's aftermath, so maybe this is the beginning of that? Here's to hoping.
Bout time the Guildless seized some degree of agency and formed a...well, an agency for investigation and intervention when the guilds and their endless conflicts preclude any and all of them from being trusted to reliably resolve matters such as this brazen assassination. People forget that outside of the guilds' respective territories is the rest, and indeed, the vast majority of the planewide ecumenopolis that is Ravnica. They must fend for themselves as the guilds are only ever focused on their ten point struggle for supremacy. They have to constantly be asking each other what's the point of even preserving the Guildpact when it's clear every single one of them is just paying lip service to their arcane accord while covertly acting to dominate one another. I'd be keen to witness an arc that saw the Guilds forced into solidarity when the Guildless have finally had enough and revolt across the entire plane.
They almost had me. Trostani being the culprit made some sense in that phyrexia is all about unity and so is selesnya so i had thought that they were trying to emmulate the oil with the pollen but no. We just like to sweep the oil thing under the rug these days.

It's cool to see a continuation of tri-color combos emerging on the plane as things get bigger and more complicated as time goes on, especially as someone who really enjoyed messing with Ghired's deck when it came out.
Such a shame that Tolsimir died. He is one of my favorite characters of Selesnya. Also odd that Selesnya/Trostani would be the guilty person/guild. While there can be some bits that make sense, based on the story as is, said points don’t make full sense. How can 1/3 of Trostani actually keep so much from the other 2/3? How was she able to do so much on her own at all?
To me it makes sense as Selesnya has always felt the most oppressive and mindcontrolling like the Phyrexian just with 'kindness' instead of pure forces
I got to say, this story was a bit messy 😅. Judith also committed a crime and captured a boros member but was not arrested. Massacre girl was captured trying to kill Aurelia but later seen trying to kill the main detective. And worst, Trostani uses polen that gives better mind control than blue mages 😂.
The way I structured the video was a little disjointed. I first followed Kaya and then Proft. But these events sort of happened in tandem. But yes in essence a lot of Ravnica Guild laws were broken and sort of left just hanging out there lol

Big quotes on "devastation" of the war, seeing how we didn't see much of any of it. Ravnica is one of the least seen. After the cut content from War of the Spark, I didn't think it'd happen to the same degree. This time, the cut content was multiplied Cutting Niv-Mizzet out of his literal job to reign in war between guilds. Aurelia was way out of line and he would've stopped her. Seems they got something against the dragon

I expected Lazav the show up, shapeshift a mustache to twirl and be like “keikaku, it was me all along!!!!!” But this was definitely an interesting story. Im glad magic is taking a break from constant apocalyptic events and just have more low key stories.
Yea. I really miss all the small stories showing life on the new planes. Think the Tarkir Sets were my favorite for this reason. Not only did we get stories from every group, we also got the stories set in the perspective of how the big plot changed everything. (My favorite being the with/without dragons stories of the faction leaders like Narset
Honestly, the issue I had with this set is that knowing it's a story and knowing how murder mysteries are written kind of ruins it. I immediately had the Dimir and the Rakdos ruled out simply because that would be too obvious, and in the end they went with the most obvious answer... given the way murder mystery stories work, where the culprit is the least obvious suspect.
Or not just least obvious, its the one that makes the least amount of sense for the sake of trying to be different. Its like a 3rd graders attempt to write a murder mystery after reading their 1st sherlock holmes book lol

After this shallow mess of a story, im not excited for our new western set coming up. Wotc pretty much watched a buddy cop drama and just changed names. There is nothing clever or original in this entire story. For me the most cringe part is when Aurelia gives them 24 hours to solve the case or else.These are the things that make me miss blocks and novels. I can't wait for "This town ain't big enough for the both of us", "High Noon", and other low hanging fruit...sigh.
Heres a quick theory the next version of Kellan we will see is gonna be dimir colors, aftwards a rakdos version, based around how he keeps changing one color at a time. Red/white, white/green and green/blue has allready been used so blue/Black is the next logical version
Although it makes sense to be WU I think Proft should’ve been colourless or 5c or at the very least not 2c. He’s meant to be neutral in guild related matters but is a ravnican WU? Sounds pretty bound to azorious to me.
I think it was White/Red, White/Green, and now Green/Blue. I’ll bet it’s to reflect how he just kind of goes along with what’s happening wherever he is, but it does feel weird, doesn’t it?

In case anyone was confused the scene with Massacre Girl and Proft chronologically comes before the scene of MG and Aurelia. MG was in her right mind (comparatively speaking, at least) and working under contract when she went after Proft. She was pollen-controlled when she went after Aurelia.
Why OF COURSE it was SELESNYA. No-one would ever imagine that factions known for the shadiest of deals would do it. Why is it that it's always the Selesnyans always want to destroy the world they want to protect? It stinks of lack of imagination to me. And Tolsimir's end was pathetic.

I know Selsenya is cultish but this smells like bullying. I love Selesnya but man.... Same with Odric. I listened to the story the other day. The guy was such in important figure, but wasn't even half as relevant as he had been when he got vamp'd. He should've been at the wedding crashing it and instilling the fear for Avacyn in those who had forgotten it. But... it was just Sorin who suddenly felt like compassion and the gals doing all the work.
