It's not entirely about his range, but how he does it. I am a bass with over a 4 octave range... I still cannot do what he does. He is crazy smooth throughout his range. I thought I was a decent singer; then I heard Geoff and felt weak. A lot of bass singers have broad ranges, then there is Geoff... yes, he is a national, vocal treasure.

Same here, I CAN sing from B1 to A4 in chest and different techniques I use widen my range to just below 5 octaves. And yet it means nothing without sounding good (which I don’t)
It’s honestly crazy how good he is

Keep in mind that he works it and exercises it and gives classes on how to make the very *best* of his entire range too. HIs breath control is excellent as well and being able to support a phrase through several octaves, to me, is what gives his voice that "smooth as butter" delivery.

@@JustMe-vk4fn, with a bass voice, we sing with our larynx very low. In the bass range, just a small change of larynx height causes a dramatic shift in pitch. Geoff has the ability to regulate it without going off where he wants to be. The lower the pitch, the less margin-for-error there is. In higher pitches, a small percentage of error isn't even noticed; with a note around A2 (baritone range) and lower, if you miss the mark, EVERYBODY notices.

@@johndeeregreen4592 :D Understood, it was the opposite for me, many long years ago. As a Dramatic Soprano I couldn't afford to miss my *high* notes lol....

Geoff is totally unique! His vocal and musical gifts are incredible. Not only does he have the natural talent, he's worked to hone it, plays instuments, and usually arranges and edits his videos himself.

Peter Hollins and Tim Foust did this song some time back, I prefer their version to this one. As far as Geoff's voice goes he and Tim are basically on the same level when it comes to vocal talent.

I'm with you on Geoff being a national treasure. He's amazing, his arrangements are so good (both for himself and VP). He really understands how to arrange for himself and the voices of VP and they are always unique, interesting, and that alone deserves crazy amounts of respect. Great reaction, always love to hear what people think about what he's doing. He just seems to keep knocking them out of the park. :)

Loved your response. I'm told that there are verses here that aren't in the movie... but are taken from the book. So - as always for VP/ Geoff - completely honoring the integrity of the song, while making it his own.

Loved your reaction! This is one of my absolute favourites by Geoff, first because he did an incredible job and second because I'm a diehard Tolkien fan. Beyond being an extremely talented singer, he's also a brilliant arranger and does all of his own production for his solo stuff (and his wife is his production manager - she's awesome).

Love yall’s reactions! Stumbled across your channel (and subsequently subscribed) as I was lying to myself about “just watching one VP vid this am (always, ALWAYS look up 2 hours later going, what just happened😂😂) Once you go down this particular rabbit hole it can be so easy to get lost, but man, what a ride! Everything they do is ear candy to me, and their theatrical approach is just icing on the cake. Love all 3~ of the big AC groups but VP is my fav for their creative arrangements and vids. Former musical theater mom…it’s just in my blood😍

The kids are in their 50's now, but back when they were eight and nine I read them "The Hobbit" before bedtime. It's odd, but after all the years, all the movies made from the Hobbit and Tolkien's other books, *this* song comes closest to capturing *my* flights of imagination that were generated by reading these stories when I was a kid myself. Geoff is quite excellent at his craft in my opinion.

Eberybody is surprised at a first sight because medieval vocals have been forgotten for a very long time : but love is triumphing and hits so many hearts at the end. Modernity is re-discovering what we knew in Europe during a 1000 years.

Consider Road Trip and do it with one of your friends who especially like live productions (this one from the Sing-Off) and comedy. Make sure you get the one that is 9 mil + so you don't get stuck with phone watchers.

The song actually has a really kind of wierd and interesting history. It appears in the original Hobbit novel as a song sung by some of the dwarves. It's left untitled in book, though, so it ended up with a few different names. In the LotR, Merry and Pippin sing a song that is inspired by that dwarven song, and their version is called "Farewell to Hearth and Hall."
There was a shortened version of the Misty Mountain song sung/recited with a different melody in the 70s animated film. Then the version we know best came from the newer movie. Both cut parts of the full written version.
Geoff's cover uses the film version as its base, but he also includes parts from Farewell to Hearth and Hall, as well as tidbits from elsewhere in the books.
