Geoff made so many interesting and inspired choices in his arrangement of “Misty Mountains”! Genius! Are you all just as impressed as us? 🤯

@@samthibert6527 and what is really, really scary about this guy is the A5 he can hit and does so in Voice Plays rendition of Oogie Boogie...amazing vocal control this lad has.

I agree it is good. But it just doesn't 'flow' as well as other versions I've heard. I think the best one (other than the original, incomplete version in 'The Hobbit') is the one by Peter Hollens featuring Tim Faust (although I could do without quite so much of the 'ahh-ahh-ahh' in the middle of that one).

So far, on his own channel, Geoff has not done anything pure a cappella. All his solo work has had varying degrees of accompaniment. He does a cappella with VoicePlay, so his own channel allows him to experiment with other things. 😁

Ah! That’s good to know, thanks! We’ve been avoiding spoiling ourselves with his music in case there are any videos we’d like to react to in the future 😆

Just yesterday I was listening to a video he did on how he arranges songs. He comments that there is no point in doing what's already been done. The goal is to find something new, or some new focus, that pulls the heart of the song into sharper clarity. Thanks for tracking down all of these bits and showing us what this one was built of!

I usually don't comment often, but I wanted to say I really like your reactions! Instead of attention-pulling, loudly singing through the whole thing or talking endlessly without a point, you guys always have such useful, sharp remarks and still the full enjoyment! You seem to notice exactly what is important or worth noticing. The extra comments and background references are so useful and fun too. After every video of you guys I find myself loving the songs even more!

Glad you enjoy our reactions! I like having the extra comments too because sometimes I need to clarify something we said or throw in some interesting tidbit we’d discover after watching the video 😁

It's difficult for me to think of Geoff as just a "singer" anymore. I find Mr. Castellucci's version of lyrics, song and harmonies and his attention to the visual details to match what I imagined Dwarves mourning their exile from their homeland might sound like as I read Mr. Tolkien's stories when I was a kid in the 60's. Long before the songs and movies were ever made.

      Sounds familiar...
      Born in 1955...
      5 in 1960...
      15 in 1970...
      Thanks for the memories...

I love that you insert your comments as captions, instead of talking over the music. So many reactors miss good parts doing that!

  • @PiscesintheRain

I really liked your comment about him treating that G1 as a "home" note. Which is extra-appropriate, given that it is so deep and this is meant to be dwarves singing.
I agree with y'all that I can't say which is the "better" version between this and the Peter Hollens/Tim Foust version. They each did their own thing, and did so spectacularly.
Also, yes, 16 Tons had an upright bass, as well as some percussion (there's a shaker in there for sure, not sure about a bass drum of some sort).

The parts he sings after the first verses of the song; so when he starts with "the wind was on the withered heath", everything there was sung in The Hobbit. The part that starts with "the wind was on" was sung in Beorn's hall; and in the Lonely Mountain, they sung more verses that brightened up some of the other Dwarves within.

I love your comment on how you can really feel the bass in the headphones. I watched one reactor doing a first time reaction to Geoff on Sixteen Tons and she commented that since this was a bass cover she had a bass booster since "often it is hard to really hear"... Those of us who follow Geoff all cringed just a little knowing she was about to get her headset blown away.

Love this song! Great reaction and so perceptive of you to note the difference in the lyrics! Yes, it seems Geoff is a Tolkien fan, he writes this under the video: “‘Far over the misty mountains cold’ was written by J.R.R. Tolkien and the melody originally appeared in the film ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’. Both are great, but I HIGHLY recommend the book”.

    • @ZhenYaoYin
      @ZhenYaoYin  3 года назад +1

Yes!! I saw him putting that in the description, although I feel that it undersells just how BIG of a Tolkien fan he is! 🤯

Zhen Yao Yin Yes, I was glad to see that he had read the books because it shows insight, but I certainly didn’t realise that he was such a fan until I watched your reaction! I’ve read the books a couples of times, but I think it was 15 years since last time and I would not have noticed the difference in the lyrics. I’m so glad that you pointed it out, ‘cause it makes me appreciate this cover even more, which I didn’t think was possible!

Hi folk's, great reaction. Have you ever heard of the Crystal River Boy's singing RAINBOW of Love??. If not you need to see/hear it especially the 2nd half when their bass singer takes lead. He goes lower than low basically sub-harmonic. Must see/hear to believe. Best wishes from Northern Ireland ❤️❤️👍

I actually like that there are instruments (very few) in this. It sets the mood some more. And nowhere dies it say this is all A Cappella. We just assume that because of the gro7up Voice Play he is a member of. Great Post guys. KUDOS!
