There was a version of Road Rash released on the Game Boy Color as well the original OG Game Boy version you showed. I own all the games in the series except the crappy Sega CD one, and the Saturn and PS1 versions of the 3DO version. I don't think I'll ever want those, unless I get a bug to "complete the collection" as it were. Anyway, my favorite of all of them is PC version of the 3DO release. Absolutely gorgeous visuals in 480p and higher framerates as well. Played it back in the day with a CH Flightstick which worked amazingly well. Tilting the joystick to tilt the bike just made so much sense. I've played and replayed it over the years with other controllers and gamepads (as recently as last year), but some day I need to track down another original 2-button CH Flightstick to play it that way again. The game and that stick are intrinsically linked in my brain.

You could play coop, vs, AND FOUR PLAYERS SPLIT SCREEN. With different modes! And some special closed tracks! We had a blast playing "tag" with my friends! 5) 4 different types of bikes for each level, and a lot of bikers to pick. You could tell apart boys from girls and "hogs" from "slicks". 6) Fun as hell and for me on an easy third place, whereas RRII is first and RR32 bits is second. Fourth is RR3D
I really liked Road Rash 3 and didn't mind the visuals at all since it was the 90's and digitization was the big thing. What really cracked me up though a couple years after Road Rash 3D came out was going through the soundtrack and seeing artists before they hit it big, like Sugar Ray and Kid Rock. I also liked to just take a leisurely drive around the map, just start up a race and drive the other way, the game will let you go for about 15 minutes before timing you out and ending the race but it lets you see how the entire game was connected.
Great video! I absolutely loved Road Rash on PS1, spent way too many hours on it as a kid and still have it in my PS1 right now, great memories. Glad you mentioned Road Redemption, it was basically the perfect transition & modern take on it, love it. Highly recommend that game to anyone that misses Road Rash.
Black kid growing up in NYC this game was the main reason I found out about soundgarden which lead to me loving bands like tool, genesis, a perfect circle
I had some great memories with Road Rash 64 as a kid. I was finally able to track it down at the start of 2020 & me and my friends got together to play it. Being that it's a 4 player game it's an absolute blast! We ended up playing it a week before Covid hit (not knowing what was ahead of us) which made it that much more special now.
Though I had the 3 Genesis versions and loved all of them, I have to give RR 64 the gold medal. I think it was the things some purest fans complain about that I actually liked the best, such as the rubber-banding of the NPC's and the focus on combat rather than winning. I also believe no game of any genre or generation ever made me laugh as much. I also love the soundtrack and often listen to the songs on stream with nostalgia.
Road Rash on PSX was my first RR game. I was obsessed with Soundgarden at the time so needless to say, I was a happy camper. My and my best friend put what seemed like DAYS into that game. I remember the first time you covered that version you referred to the soundtrack as one ".. from the Gods." Indeed!
I enjoyed this video 👍 earned. Road rash 2 and 3do road rash my favs. Road redemption is incredible, I highly recommend. Feels just like a road rash game.
Ah the road rash series, loved em' all, though i never got to play the 3do version. But thanks for showcasing one of the best series for the genesis, great vid as always x
Yup, the 3DO, Saturn and PS1 Road Rash is by far the best in the series in my opinion and for me the Saturn version is what I played the most and in ways it changed my life by introducing me to a certain style of rock music. The series went downhill after that, but for me Road Rash on the Saturn and Road Road 2 on the Megadrive are the GOAT. Great video as always, this series is classic for sure.
My friend Eric and I played Road Rash 2 on Sega a lot. When it started getting boring, we would see who could crash and skid the furthest distance. Best part of the game hands down. While your skidding across the map, your mileage keeps going as if your still on the bike. My record is .73 miles if I remember correctly. Ah the fun times in life. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Atgames legends ultimate arcade you can play road rash with Sega, SNES, Sega CD via USB, they even allow streaming from PC steam games so you can play road redemption too.
I was looking for a Road Rash Retrospective about half a year ago, but none of those i found had the Quality of this Video. Now THIS showed up in my Recommended Feed. So thanks for making this Video. Great Job, Dude.
Road Rash on Genesis has a special place in my heart. I remember in my childhood one summer, playing basketball with a friend that his older brother rolled up on the driveway with a new cbr900rr. My attention was locked onto the bike and was in complete awe on how impressive it was. My friend took noticed and asked if I wanted to play a game. He then showed me the first Road Rash game and I was hooked. Fast forward later, another friend had the Sega Channel, it had the 3rd RR, and became my favorite combat racing game. It was also the first game I played a lot of hours in one sitting. Loved everything about it and while it may be an unpopular opinion, it's my favorite out of the series. The games definitely left a big impact on me and was one of the reasons why I am into sportbikes today. Would love to see RR3 or even the previous 2 get the same remake treatment that Super Hang-On got with the M2 devs.
Road Rash 3 on the Genesis was the best! Amazing music and the godly nunchuks! Tried playing it recently and I swear I've had PowerPoint presentations at work with faster framerates! :D
Most excellent retrospctive Sir, really enjoyed it? I do remember when Road Rash 3D came out reviewers absolutely eviscerating the game, especially the fact they removed the animation of running back to your bike when you got knocked off for some reason. They really hated that omission for some reason. BTW Were you tempted to give Skitchin' an honorable mention at all? Used to rent that a lot from Blockbusters as a kid.
I hated that omission myself too. It was one of those little things that set RR apart from other games. There were times when I trashed my bike but still crossed the finishing line just by running towards it. And some off-bike punching competitions with my buddies.
Road Rash for Saturn seemed like a system seller to me. I still have my copy my Dad bought all those years ago, and he loved it too! The best part was a guy you ran over who yelled "Hey Motha" it was hilarious every time and we would just crack up. Most of my friends had a Saturn and it as well. I had no idea the Saturn "bombed" until recently because we all had it and played this game.
I remember one time I got into a fist fight with five other bikers for that same chain. It took me about thirty seconds to steal it back and beat the snot out of everyone else in that group to feel as though I earned the right to progress. lol About a minute later I had a head-on collision with a car. Boy... I got used as a mobile speed bump about ten seconds later.
Subscribed! This game was near and dear to my heart as a kid. I have fond memories playing it with my little bro and our two best friends. Your ideas for a modern day Road Rash sound stellar. Let’s hope that somebody comes along and develops it.
Wonderful retrospective on Road Rash! Subbed! The original Road Rash was the first-ever video game I purchased brand new at retail (at a Sears, no less). LOVED the soundtrack on the first one. Some hate it, but I adore it. Still listen to some of the tracks in my car on the reg to this day. And then the 3DO version.... The art style and presentation was second-to-none. Great gameplay too. Those two are by far my favorites in the series.
Road Rash 3D0 was perfect for its time. As a kid in the 90's, the "Tude" of that era made the trippy art style and Hammerbox/Soundgarden playing in the background a god send for me. I spent hours just getting off my bike and walking the course, just to admire the scenery.
This game (most early versions plus 3DO) was a part of my childhood. I loved crashing and running back to the back. The farther I flew away from the bike; the more awesome it was.
Another great video man. The road rash series on the genesis is so nostalgic to me. I owned 1 and 2 as a kid and remember playing it on the sega channel too. I play these games at least once a month. Thanks for this video!
I played over 100 hours on my 3DO in 1994 with Road Rash and I loved it. That game was way ahead of its time! Possibly my favorite 3DO game ever! Great video!
Also I’m friends with Carrie Akre on Facebook she’s the lead singer of Hammerbox on sega CD version. She said that the record company she was under was approached by EA and asked for some music bands that played Grunge. Her agent told them that they were chosen and that was that they really didn’t do much else but give the Ok!
@@kekeke8988 Gameplay beats graphics. Plus the Ps1 graphics have serious anti-aliasing issues and shaky textures. Both were rough graphically, but in this case the N64 game was just simply better than the original PS1 offering. The second PS1 game, Jailbreak, looks and plays better than them both though.
I had a friend with a well off family that got him a Genesis in 1989. Having an NES and a C64 I was floored by the graphics and music of the Genesis. When he got this game I stayed up all night trying to get enough money for the next bike, then the next bike, then the next bike...you get the idea. This thing was tons of fun in the years right before my hormones would turn me away from video games. Still fun to play today.
Road Rash on the Playstation is a real hidden gem. They nailed the feeling of breakneck speed perfectly. When you’re flying along at top speed with the scenery whizzing by, it’s exhilarating. I’d recommend it above 2 or 3 on the Genesis.
Fantastic video! I was obsessed with Road Rash 3 as a kid. Tried to go back through the series, but ultimately ended up settling on the Saturn version with the licensed music.
My brother and I played the hell out of RR2 Playing split screen we each had computer rivals that would always come out of nowhere and screw us over. Some of my favorite gaming memories, and screw you P.E. No. 1, Jorg, and Sven.
I bought a PlayStation disk that was 3 games for 1 called the help charity compilation. It was Broken Sword 2, Myst and Roadrash. Such a weird mix of games but incredible value for £20 and loved everyone of them (except Myst maybe)
Man this lockdown has got me so nostalgic for many games. Road Rash for PC was one of the first games I ever bought when I first got my own computer, is one of my favorite games of all time, and in my opinion the best in the series. It's also incredibly well coded and has worked flawlessly on every PC I've owned from Windows 95 onwards... the only issue being distorted colors in Windows 7 and beyond which are easily fixable. There was even a stripped-down and repackaged version some years ago by classic-gaming.net, which was a free download and that removes the CD audio and full motion video but allows the game to run without a disc. This is the version I usually play as it's quick to jump into. Some 20 years on and I'm still managing to exploit little bugs and see things in-game for the first time. One thing that made the game unique was that it was the racer himself that was registered as the player and not the bike as in just about all other racing games, meaning you could dismount and run the entire race if you wanted. It's always funny to plow into a car, come off your bike, and cross the finish line with just the biker. The game would be perfect with a modern remaster, nothing too drastic just higher-detail graphics. I must have played each track a thousand times... some new tracks would be nice too. I'm surprised the community hasn't managed to crack the assets and make new content. I can barely go a single computer session without having to fire it up for a race or two.
Remember having fun with this on the Sega Saturn, similar look and feel to the first Need for Speed game. Looking back I think 2-player option is the most missed feature.
Does anybody here remember the Xtreme series? U raced on Skateboards, bikes, and rollerblades. If u like Road rash you will like xtreme lol. It came out on PlayStation.
Awesome vid. It really brings back the memories and nostalgia. I got into Road Rash around the time of RR2, RR3 and RR for the Psx. I played those games so much, by far one of my favorite series of games back in the day. I really wish they would do an HD collection. Taking all the games and making all the levels of each game as different circuits. Taking RR classic and RR PSX (3DO) and make that the first circuit since they all were local races, then the second circuit would be you graduating to going national with races from RR2 and then the final circuit would be when you gain national championship and go on for the global one with global races from RR3. They could also add great colorful characters like from the CD version and the rivalry system. So each race would make other character warm to you or become more adversarial depending on how you treated them the last race. Then of course make sure to add awesome FMV sequences for getting arrested, crashing out, placing during a race, winning one and beating the circuit. As far as graphic go make the engine one that mimics the one used for the CD version with updated hd digitized ones. oooh I would buy that in a heartbeat.
It's really no good looking game - more like a generation 1 N64 game. But it's great fun - especially in 4 player mode with a bunch of bloodthirsty friends. Imho the best multiplayer Road Rash hands down. : )
I used to know the guy who wrote the animals song on Road Rash Jailbreak. He worked at Kroger's in Kennesaw, GA. His band was called the Blacklight Poster Boys. I have ripped CD of about 10 of their songs. Pretty good stuff.
I remember many long nights trying to save enough money for the high end bikes in Road Rash 2. Such a great game! Love kicking people into oncoming traffic
I loved road rash 2 on the Genesis/Megadrive. Call me crazy but I feel the 3D0 version is still the best control wise. I feel the same about the 3do version of the original need for speed.
In Road Rash 3D I used to drive up on top of the traffic cars roof, stop there and go on a guided tour of the map as the AI drove around with me on top 😂
Amazing game series! I remember pushing the other riders into signs, kicking them off their bikes...😂I literally haven't thought about this in almost 2 decades. Thanks for the upload.😂👌
Pacific Coast music on RR1 is just incredible, still love it to this day.Once you learned all combat tricks on RR64, the gameplay becomes highly addictive with excellent level design (cliffs of insanity, anyone?), despite the so so graphics.
Road Rash 3 was my favorite, It had the best music of any of the 16 bit games and I really liked the graphics. The brazil stage music and Australia stage music were awesome.
I had the Playstation port version and for someone that is utterly rubbish at racing games I absolutely adored it, much to the boredom and frustrations of my friends (I almost always won head to heads.) It's still one of maybe two or three racers I ever saw through until the end. The art style was exaggerated and larger than life and I have fond memories of it, would love to play it again.

Rob Hubbard's music in the first two games is so catchy and perfect. It's part of why those two are my favorites.
They're definitely the best, hated when it went to real rock music in the later games. The series deteriorated over time.
Almost read that as Ron Hubbard for a sec! Scientology + video games = scary thought :p
@@AmbientMess ROFL how did I never noticed that XD
Agreed, Rub Hubbard did an amazing job, but that's also the only thing to like about those games imo.
Gonna break my rusty CAAAAAAGE!!!
Oh yeah, soundgarden, rip chris cornell...I enjoyed the whole soundtrack to be honest, even the weird "weed" sounding of some bands lol
AND RUuuun... ))
You nailed it!
Black kid growing up in NYC this game was the main reason I found out about soundgarden which lead to me loving bands like tool, genesis, a perfect circle
Soundgarden - Rusty Cage
Soundgarden - Outshined
Soundgarden - Kickstand
Swervedriver - Duel
Swervedriver - Last Train to Satansville
Monster Magnet - Dinosaur Vacume
Hammerbox - Trip
Hammerbox - Simple Passing
Paw - The Bridge
Paw - Jessy
Paw - Pansy
Therapy? - Teethgrinder
Therapy? - Auto Surgery
Agreed; I feel like RR64 is very underrated.
Few things in life are more satisfying than a clean crowbar hit in RR3
Thank you for acknowledging Road Redemption. That is an underrated spiritual successor that needs more love.
I still have my original 3do, and road rash is still fun to play, and it's funny as hell 😂
Both you and Retrocore have Road Rash on the brain tonight.
I was just finishing watching Mark's take on Road Rash 32 bits video.
Oh dude, the way you describe a modern day online Road Rash experience sounds freaking awesome! I sure hope it happens one day!
Road Rash 64 was my favorite, hours of fun and laughing with friends, good times.
Yesss! I loved the Road Rash games so much.
Great Job, Dude.
one of my fav series, played it alot on ps1, wish the series came back
Road Redemption is the modern equivalent it's very good. Adds a lot more to the genre.
@@urbanmidnight1 Never heard of it besides you mentioning and this video, might give it a try, thanks
Thanks for showing the big jump on the Hawaii level on RR2. Took me back. Also my favorite music track.
@Benjamin Jagun Road Redemption is the closest we're likely to get,
Sadly Road Rash is just another franchise EA have let die.
Grab opponent's metal chain: "YEAH!"
Just wanted to say your videos are always awesome, thanks for making them!
Subscribed! This game was near and dear to my heart as a kid. I have fond memories playing it with my little bro and our two best friends. Your ideas for a modern day Road Rash sound stellar. Let’s hope that somebody comes along and develops it.
I love this game
Awesome vid! Always enjoy watching road rash thing's
❗Thanks to the PS1 version, I heard and loved 'Auto-Surgery' by Therapy?
Another great video man. The road rash series on the genesis is so nostalgic to me. I owned 1 and 2 as a kid and remember playing it on the sega channel too. I play these games at least once a month. Thanks for this video!
I played over 100 hours on my 3DO in 1994 with Road Rash and I loved it. That game was way ahead of its time! Possibly my favorite 3DO game ever! Great video!
Always thought this would've been fun as hell with the Hang On bike seat at the arcades.
Nothing more satisfying than holding on that kick button until just the right time, then launching someone into oncoming traffic
Hammerbox playing at 8:11
Loved these games as a kid
I used to dislike RR3 but now I think it's the best one gameplay wise. Every race something absolutely insane happens.
I played this game a lot on the Mega Drive 🇧🇷 and the 3DO as well. I love the 3DO version because it introduced me to Soundgarden...
Many fantastic memories of that game on the Mega Drive and Sega Saturn o/
The 64 version was the most hilarious. Still is 2 this day. 😂😂😂😂😂
Nothing funny about being that ugly visually. I'd take the master system graphics over that.
@@kekeke8988 i was leaning more on sound FX than graphics bud
Even in it's day many N64 games looked terrible.
Don't! Ya dare mess with ma mean machine!!! 😂
Road Rash 3D was my shit back in the day, how large the map was and how free you felt made it SOOOOO much fun
the song for the Hawaii stage pops into my head at least once per day. That crazy polyrhythmic drum solo was ahead of its time
This took me back. Great video!!!
The 16bit soundtrack is something I'll never forget.
My brother and I played the hell out of RR2 Playing split screen we each had computer rivals that would always come out of nowhere and screw us over. Some of my favorite gaming memories, and screw you P.E. No. 1, Jorg, and Sven.
Road Rash on Sega Saturn was one of my favorite games of all time. I miss it.
Had so much fun playing this series. Great video as always.
Im glad to see your channel growing brother! I think I subscribed when you had 5k or so. Keep up the quality content us sega fans deserve.
Road Rash 64 is the only one I come back to nowadays.
Wow. Nice recap video!!! Well done. Organized and detailed. Finally a nice unbiased review. Hope to see more nostalgic content
I still play Road Rash 3 to this day, love the soundtrack! Overclock your mega drive and the games will still blow you away!
Road Rash for sega was one of my favs. Nothing was better than being able to upgrade 🏍
Road rash 64 owns. I actually like the low poly look
It's really no good looking game - more like a generation 1 N64 game. But it's great fun - especially in 4 player mode with a bunch of bloodthirsty friends. Imho the best multiplayer Road Rash hands down. : )
It does have a higher resolution mode if you have the memory upgrade on the n64. Looks a little better.
2, 3, 32bit, and 64 will always be the best.
Love kicking people into oncoming traffic
that is a one of my best memory playing ROAD RASH with buddy on the Sega Mega Drive 16b
I have so many hours logged on the Genesis with Road Rash 2. Remember picking it up in the 2nd hand bin. :)
I played Road Rash on my 3DO back then!
It was amazing and maybe even one of the best 3DO-games, together with Wing Commander 3!
I loved road rash 2 on the Genesis/Megadrive.
Call me crazy but I feel the 3D0 version is still the best control wise.
I feel the same about the 3do version of the original need for speed.
One of my Top 5 series of the 1990s. Incredible!
I played RR2, RR3, RR (PSX/PC) and RR64 to deeeeaaaaath.
In Road Rash 3D I used to drive up on top of the traffic cars roof, stop there and go on a guided tour of the map as the AI drove around with me on top 😂
Ah yes.
Road Rash on the Sega CD.
The ideal franchise for the SEGA CD.
The lunar games were good too
the sega cd had so much potential 😭
I remember wanting one back in the day but it was so expensive
Amazing game series! I remember pushing the other riders into signs, kicking them off their bikes...😂I literally haven't thought about this in almost 2 decades. Thanks for the upload.😂👌
aaah that genesis twangy sound lol
