The PC version of Road Rash was my first job in the industry. My entire Summer in 1995 was spent creating a single 256-color super palette from the original 3DO 16-bit textures. I sat around and ran all the game's textures through Debabelizer on a Mac Quadra all day (it would literally take 8 hours). Then I'd look at every single texture using that new VGA palette and fix problematic textures by replacing colors that matched better with the originals. By the end of the project I could tell you the file name of each sprite that flew by you as you played the game. FUN FACT: The rider model they photographed for the player sprite is actually a woman. We had the source images from the photo session used to create the digitized sprites and could see who the real people were. Pretty neat. I'm in the credits as "Artist", but I don't know if that counts as art!
Thats awesome! Thanks for sharing. I wonder if EA still has all the original photos/data they used for the sprites. I heard they still display the red Ducati.

He would bring the console "back home" when he would visit for a weekend and we played this and Solar Eclipse. The music was of course awesome, from a time when getting license to use it didn;t cost half a game's dev. budget. That "bonk" sound, I still here it lol.
I lived and breathed the Saturn version of Road Rash! I always played as Teflon Mike for some reason; dude just looked cool. Running over pedestrians cracked me up in this game, with some screaming "DUDE!". I think overall, this game perfectly captured the feel of Road Rash through both the characters and the tracks. It was also thanks to this game that I got into groups like Soundgarden and PAW; the FMV music videos which played in the game when left alone were amazing! Just too many memories. Without a doubt the best Road Rash game ever, no contest imo. Great video as always!
It's like he said, it fit like a glove. Everything just came together. Many a time, a storyline seems fake. They have a story for the sake of it. But the bike buying, upgrading to newer ones, getting wrecked, busted felt very real due to the artwork, music and videos. We feel like an actual protagonist of a story. And also, Mike's character just felt like the lead. Maybe because we start to play with him. It's like Ash cannot give up on Pikachu even though other better and stronger Pokemons might come his way.
My favorite will always be the OG Genesis game, but Road Rash for PS1 is just a kick ass game. The addition of Soundgarden and Swervedriver is also big plus for me. That intro video is so fun!
I wasn't able to convince my parents due to the cost of a 3DO. Road Rash was the only reason why I wanted a 3DO. I was fortunate enough to have a good PC during that time and was so excited to find out that Road Rash was available on it. Great memories.
This was fun and informative. You already compared "The Need For Speed", but hmm...maybe another idea along this line would be Cruis'n USA. N64 or Arcade VS N64. I know this channel is more geared towards Sega, but it's an idea.
Yeah the poor old 3DO didn't get too many W's but this definitely was. It's funny my only memory with the 3DO and this game was playing it all the time over at what I think was either electronic boutique at the time. I remember being absolutely amazed and fascinated and loving every minute of it.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu Need for Speed, Road Rash, Virtual Stadium, SlamJam, the polygon world is really an impact at that time. Even I bought Saturn later, it did not give me the same impact as what 3DO did.
@@leepit7178 It's true, the first time you see it just blows your mind. But every subsequent time it gets a little bit less impressive a little bit less awe-inspiring. By the time I got my PlayStation in 97-8 I was a little bit jaded and definitely wasn't as deeply impressed again until the Dreamcast and PS2/GameCube/xbox came out.
While 3 will always be my definitive version, this was by far the best the game ever got. Very fond memories, and something the 3d titles never got right.
Road rash 3 tour de force? Holy moly, I started road rash with 32 bit then down to 3,daaaaaamn the music on 3 is insane. Don veca did an amazing job with the music on the two
Road Rash, and Need For Speed were 2 of the best racing games for the 3DO; damn I miss the 90's! I would love to see Sega Lord X do a comparison video of Space Hulk on the 3do, Ps1, and Saturn! The graphics in that game blew me away, and still looks good by today's standards.
Great review. I love this game so much. Always found the difference in feel between menu and gameplay a bit jarring but it kind of adds to the experience. Even though the menu art style is ugly it blends with the music to create a really cool vibe that's so nostalgic now.
I have the PS1 version. I wish I had picked up the Saturn version back in the day but the PS1 version will have to do. The bike accelerating sounded awesome on the Saturn version, towards the end of the video. I love RR, RR2, and RR-32bit.
Road Rash on the 3DO is a game beaten medal I wear with honor. It took me over a decade. When you get to level five and especially the last few races its near impossible. You have the fastest bike which makes the race a moving BLUR. By the time you get there all the other racers hate and target you. Your flying through the race twitching in every turn, trying not to get hit by racers, run into the back of cars, your bike sometimes jumping higher than the buildings , avoiding granny's with walkers, and you can't fall down because the pack flies past and you lose. The utter perfection your final lvl 5 race has to be is no short then being Neo and seeing the Matrix. When I won it, I swore I had stopped time.
There was an unofficial sequel released back a few years ago. It got RAVE reviews. I forget what it was called, but everyone called it the spiritual successor.
NEVER was a motorcycle guy but I played Road Rash 2 on the PC when I got some racing games as a gift for Christmas I played it more than than the INDY racing games. It was actually entertaining & fun. I was impressed with the graphics and gameplay. I wouldn't mind seeing a newer version on the modern consoles. I would definitely pick it up it came out.
I had the 3DO version. Used to love listening to rusty cage by sound garden. I didn’t care much for my 3DO when I had it, but when I played a game on it, road rash was it.
Man, I love this game. It's like you said, even though it was relatively simplistic and there wasn't "a ton to do" I kept coming back to it all the time back in the 90s. The soundtrack absolutely influenced my music tastes for years to come. What a gem of a game.
I mean seriously, what's the point in having other channels on youtube? This is the ONLY one we'll ever need! Your channel sets the bar so high, other channels can only DREAM of putting out the same level of content! Excellent job as always man!
I mean, it *could* be really cool - graphics have come a long way since the mid 90s. Online multiplayer could be awesome too. But the reality is, it would just be filled with day 1 patches, paid DLC, DRM, maybe even ads. And old games were too hard, so they’d have to make it easier, ruining the original feel and gameplay. It’s unlikely they’d be able to secure the rights to the music, hell you can’t even put a clip of it on RUclips with being hit with a copyright ban. So the end result would just fall short of our memories of the originals. Better to just enjoy them as they are, imperfect but still extremely fun - graphics aren’t everything.
Jesse, you’re a good dog such a good dog… We really need a proper remake to this game. It was such an incredibly fun time. The 3DO was so ahead of its time. This, Escape From Monster Manor, Twisted, Out Of This World, Shockwave, The Horde, Theme Park, Way Of The Warrior, PGA Tour, Advanced D&D, Total Eclipse, Killing Time, Gex, Need For Speed, Wing Commander, Star Control, Etc… There were so many great original games for it. I think many people forget just how incredible it was at the time. It’s just a shame that it’s cost not only prohibited the consumer from getting it, but because of that… It inhibited third-party developers from spending the money to develop for it. A definite recipe for disaster. While it lasted, it was some of the best gaming I ever had. Still to this day, I would put it in the top three systems I’ve ever owned. And I’ve pretty much owned them all.
I used to deliberately set a crash course the moment I knew I was going to clear the finishing line just to see it take place for fun back with Road Rash 3. Never played this version, but you can be sure I'd have done the same if I did.
From what I see in this video, 3DO is the only version to have a nice fade-in effect for drawing the background in the distance. All other ports replaced it by pop-in. Played the game on Saturn a few times and it felt very well done for the console.
I can honestly state as a fact that the 3DO version is the best 32-bit version I have played, bar none... ... Well, yeah, it's also the only 32-bit version I have played, but still.. ;-) Great vid!
Great video, bit you didn't mention the load times on Saturn / PSX (or did I miss it?) So which we could see a modern day equivalent of this. With FMV, photo realistic graphics etc... kinda like NFS Hot Pursuit. They could add so much more to the base (3DO) version in an updated release
I remember just running around off the bike after getting hit, just cuz I could. Loved this game. I had a 3DO demo disc with the first stage on it, and I played the hell out of it.
I still play the 3DO version to this day. The 4DO emulator lets you overclock to 50mhz and play the game at a nice smooth framerate. I still think it's better than the PSX version.
I remember seeing the 3do version running at my local video rental store and being so impressed by it, having a megadrive at the time. I agree it's the best game on the platform.
I played the shit out of this on my PlayStation from 96 to 97. The soundtrack brings back so many good memories. It fit the game superbly and was a perfect representation of that time period.
I love this game! I've got all versions, with the exception of the 3DO original. I play the Saturn version on the Yaba Sanshiro emulator on the Nvidia shield and it runs in super high resolution! (The PSone version on the psxe emulator with opengl has a weird "ghost" effect on the buildings).
I was fascinated by the 3DO version and delighted when it was released on PC. It's a title I'm unlikely to revisit though the presentation still appeals and will always have fond memories.
The 3DO was inferior hardware wise to the PS1. It did great versus the 16 bit consoles (and even against Sega CD/32X) but once PS came out it was game over for 3DO.
My dad bought our first game console in 1995/6, and it was a Saturn. This wasn't our first game, but it is the one I probably played the most. Introduced me to Soundgarden, and mostly for that reason I have a special connection to this game and this console. Still have it to this day, and I need to play it again soon.
As someone who used to own a Genesis then a Saturn (of which was recently returned to me after about 25 years), the Sega Lord X channel has been INVALUABLE for deciding what games to purchase or re-acquire. A month ago I didn’t have any Sega systems, now I have games being delivered to me for the Master System, Genesis, Sega CD, 32x and Saturn (including Road Rash).
Even though the versions are mostly identical, something about the 3DO version just feels better to play than the Saturn or PS1 versions, is it just me?
It's my favourite to play, but it's the one I played back in the day so I'm biased. It is the best looking version on the consoles, and the fade/fog effect it has in the distance is missing on all the other versions, including the PC. I don't think the low framerate hurts it, especially coming from the Mega Drive/Genesis games.
@@brendanroberts1310 I like several other games too like Sherlock Holmes, quazar, the horde, Wolfenstein 3d. Several others, but many got good ports I think.
First game I ever played on a friend's computer when I was about 14 years old, I am 33 now. I was instantly hooked and started my love for video games.
I still have 3DO and Sega Cd versions and really enjoy both of them. For some reason i prefer playing Sega Cd version probably due to licensed music during game play.
the only time i got to experience RR, or the 3DO in general was at a small strip mall where an electronics shop sold the console, the only place locally that did. They had a display model where they could let the public try out the console, which at the time i dont think even Toys R Us had that yet. Me and my brother would play that game at the store non-stop. It blew our minds.
Could get higher quality music out of the PC version with a better soundfont/MIDI device. The built-in Microsoft MIDI soundfont has always been pretty bad, but something like a Roland SC-55/SC-88 or Yamaha MU80 can be very nice.
Could never get into Road Rash, but love me some super hang on (i know, outside of motorcycles, not really that comparable). I should revisit one day to see if my views have changed.
This was one of my first games on both PS1 and Saturn. Also had it on PC back in the day (It had actual multiplayer). Still have the ps1 and pc versions.
The 3DO version was also ported to Sega CD. It had all the music and cutscenes (which looked great for Sega CD fmvs). The game itself was the Road Rash 3 engine. I know it’s 16-bit, but it’s still worth mentioning as not many people knew it even existed back when it came out.
Amazing soundtrack - I was already a massive Soundgarden fan, but this game introduced me to Paw and Swervedriver, and I immediately tracked down their CDs. Paw's Dragline is definitely an underrated gem - a cracking Southern sludgy metal album along the lines of Down.
I have the Saturn version and I'm cool with it. I also played the PS1 version as well. I never had the 3DO so didn't play that one. It's good classic Road Rash fun! I certainly do miss this series, but I don't think I want modern EA to bring it back. Modern EA can suck it! Road Redemption could fill that void good enough nowadays.
One thing to note, all versions of the game use a midi soundtrack, it's just the console versions can load custom instruments to make the music sound a little better. The PC was stuck with General Midi, which had a preloaded selection of instruments that could not be modified in any way. Still, if you run the game on a high-end midi module it'll give the console versions a run for their money for sure! Great video, sir!

3DO was my first 32 bit love, then sony and microsoft took over
@@victor.elkins and well, the first XBox was still 32-bits 😅
@@DanielMonteiroNit CPU is 32 bit, GPU is 128bit. Split the difference its 64bit 😅
Sony sucks
This video let me remember how amazing it was to play 3D polygon game at home with 3DO.
@@leepit7178
It's true, the first time you see it just blows your mind. But every subsequent time it gets a little bit less impressive a little bit less awe-inspiring. By the time I got my PlayStation in 97-8 I was a little bit jaded and definitely wasn't as deeply impressed again until the Dreamcast and PS2/GameCube/xbox came out.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu The next impact that I got with same level as Polygon world is VR.
@@leepit7178
I don't doubt it.
VR seems like the next logical evolutionary step for gaming.
Hopefully one of these days I'll get to experience it.
While 3 will always be my definitive version, this was by far the best the game ever got. Very fond memories, and something the 3d titles never got right.
Road rash 3 tour de force? Holy moly, I started road rash with 32 bit then down to 3,daaaaaamn the music on 3 is insane. Don veca did an amazing job with the music on the two
PSX road rash is awesome. It really nails the feeling of speed.
One of the best games ever. Amazing to experience back then.
PS1 Road Rash is one of the best racing games I've ever played. I sometimes plug it in to casually play it every now and then.
I've never noticed how MIDI can sound so sad when compared to the other ones
Indeed! Wich is ironic because a lot of my pro musical recording nowadats is made with MIDI. I guess it all comes down to the quality of the samples!
Oh wow I had a 3DO and Road Rash for it but I never knew NFS2 came out for it. I had NFS2 on PC though, great game!
@@michaelhunsinger8351 Not NFS2. Just need for speed.
Road Redemption. It’s pretty brutal too.
Road Redeptions pretty good, bought it on steam and switch
feel like you and the Nerd would hit it off like a Sylvester and Arnold movie.
Take it your talking about AVGN?
The 90s was when EA were about making fun games. Now they are all about the money. I want the old EA back
Play the old games on retro consoles or emulate them my friend. They are mostly good and in many ways better than what we get serve right now.
Pay up
The Saturn version gets some high criticism by other Tubers but it's smooth as butter!?!
I had this on PC and absolutely loved it. This and NFS2 being on home platforms really blew me away.
Man, I love this game. It's like you said, even though it was relatively simplistic and there wasn't "a ton to do" I kept coming back to it all the time back in the 90s. The soundtrack absolutely influenced my music tastes for years to come. What a gem of a game.
Nothing can replace a good gameplay.
I mean seriously, what's the point in having other channels on youtube? This is the ONLY one we'll ever need! Your channel sets the bar so high, other channels can only DREAM of putting out the same level of content! Excellent job as always man!
With all of the old franchise getting new games or remakes; someday Road Rash will return
But will we want it?
The problem is the franchise is owned by EA....well.....
Jesse, you’re a good dog such a good dog… We really need a proper remake to this game. It was such an incredibly fun time. The 3DO was so ahead of its time. This, Escape From Monster Manor, Twisted, Out Of This World, Shockwave, The Horde, Theme Park, Way Of The Warrior, PGA Tour, Advanced D&D, Total Eclipse, Killing Time, Gex, Need For Speed, Wing Commander, Star Control, Etc…
There were so many great original games for it.
12:35 *Yeah! I won the race, but I also went flying off the cliff lol* 😂
Ha. Yeah, I thought that one was funny. Had to put it in the video.
@@SegaLordX lol was great
I used to deliberately set a crash course the moment I knew I was going to clear the finishing line just to see it take place for fun back with Road Rash 3. Never played this version, but you can be sure I'd have done the same if I did.
This game introduced me to the sega genesis. I played RR at a friends house and from that point on I was a genesis kid, not SN.
EA had actually planned a SNES port but scrapped it.
I used to okay it on PS with the disc door open. It still played til end of the level as I remember
Great video, bit you didn't mention the load times on Saturn / PSX (or did I miss it?)
So which we could see a modern day equivalent of this. With FMV, photo realistic graphics etc... kinda like NFS Hot Pursuit. They could add so much more to the base (3DO) version in an updated release
Nice! I played a lot in the Sega Saturn but never reach de end of the game :( The last tracks were gigantic and very hard!
Man I freakin loved Road Rash 32.... they still play pretty well!
12:35 "YEAH!" ... Drives off the cliff. Haha
Great Vídeo!! 3DO wow a good console!!! Imagine if 3DO keep in Race until late 90's....
I agree
You are not alone. The 3DO version to me is the best.
I was about to say that! In the end of the day, the 3DO version was the best to play at that time(at least among consoles).
This and star control 2 are the must haves for 3do
Damn. I own a 3do and I can't think of any other games that are must owns.
@@brendanroberts1310 I like several other games too like Sherlock Holmes, quazar, the horde, Wolfenstein 3d. Several others, but many got good ports I think.
SSF2T was fantastic as well!
@@billybadass7718 yes if you had the six button controller.
First game I ever played on a friend's computer when I was about 14 years old, I am 33 now.
I was instantly hooked and started my love for video games.
Theres a modern cycle combat game, Road Redemption if anyone might be interested. Supposed to be good, ive almost bought it numerous times lol.
9:45 Joke's on you, I'm still rocking a CRT for my desktop!
I remember when I got this for Sega Saturn as a kid, I couldn't stop playing it. So fun.
I still have 3DO and Sega Cd versions and really enjoy both of them. For some reason i prefer playing Sega Cd version probably due to licensed music during game play.
I always wanted the 3DO Road Rash after seeing a trick with the cows in a magazine.
the only time i got to experience RR, or the 3DO in general was at a small strip mall where an electronics shop sold the console, the only place locally that did. They had a display model where they could let the public try out the console, which at the time i dont think even Toys R Us had that yet. Me and my brother would play that game at the store non-stop. It blew our minds.
So many hours playing the Saturn version. So many.
Still play Super Hang On on my PS3, it's great yeah
This was one of my first games on both PS1 and Saturn. Also had it on PC back in the day (It had actual multiplayer). Still have the ps1 and pc versions.
Man this brings back memories, remember they had soundgarden and other great artist(can’t remember who else ) videos/soundtracks as well in the game
If you are a 80s kid and you don’t like this then you lost at life.
The 3DO version was also ported to Sega CD. It had all the music and cutscenes (which looked great for Sega CD fmvs). The game itself was the Road Rash 3 engine. I know it’s 16-bit, but it’s still worth mentioning as not many people knew it even existed back when it came out.
I remember first playing this on PC at my friends house since I knew no one with a 3DO, only time I’ve ever seen a 3DO was in the store.
Amazing soundtrack - I was already a massive Soundgarden fan, but this game introduced me to Paw and Swervedriver, and I immediately tracked down their CDs. Paw's Dragline is definitely an underrated gem - a cracking Southern sludgy metal album along the lines of Down.
I played this on ps1 it was a great game during it's time
I loved this and Skitchin' and have Road Redemption on steam.
The soundtrack still shreds. Hearing Cornell belting out Rusty Cage in a road rash game was a marrying of my two favorite things as a kid.
Remember the ps1 version listening to rusty cage trying no knock off other riders
I didn't have this one, but I did have Road Rash 3D for the PS1. The licensed music even played during the races... good times
