Davis messed up so bad, that they made me post twice in the same week 😵💫
I've posted this everywhere, but what makes this particularly frustrating is that UC Davis went through this before. When we held the first football game at that stadium in 2007, the weather was similar: it was September 1 at 1 p.m. The first phase of the facility did not have lights, with the plan of holding only day games for the first few years. Since it was the very first football game there, many people turned out to attend in person - including many who otherwise would have skipped out had it been just any other game. Similar temperature to Friday, it became sweltering by game time. As a result, there were dozens of 911 calls, several people who passed out. The Bruce Edwards Club Room (bottom floor of the press box) turned into a triage center for emergency responders. The local media referred to the bowl design of the stadium - turf on the bottom, metal stands and a concrete border - as a "Dutch oven."
The athletics department had to quickly rewrite policies on outside food and drink, and lifted the ban on umbrellas. The area directly in front of the club room was VIP only, with a metal barrier surrounding it. These were removed on that day because ambulances needed to get through, and stayed down for good. This is important because the press box creates a shaded spot there in the late afternoon.
Oh, and the addition of lights was moved up to 2008 so that we could host night games early in the school year.
In other words, many mistakes took place on Sept. 1, 2007. I think there was also an extent to which people thought, "meh, it's fall, it won't be hot by then." Never mind that September 1 is technically summer (ask any astronomer), it just stays hot in Davis from mid-May to the end of September. And even when the weather is more mild, the turf itself feels way hotter. You can have an 80-degree day but it will feel like 100 on the field - something we discovered at the first event of any kind at the stadium, which was a lacrosse game in April 2007. It's the nature of the beast when the playing surface is pretty much plastic grass surrounded by crushed tires.
Lesson learned, right?
Fast forward to two days ago. Whelp, I guess not. Never have I ever felt more deja vu than reading Twitter and Reddit this weekend. Sorry you had such a lousy experience. It's part of the fallout when enough people in high-level positions have no appreciation for institutional knowledge.
Damn - I'd never heard about that, but it's wild to think we haven't come very far since 😔
I graduated from the law school last month. We had our ceremony at Mondavi; they absolutely should have also done it indoors for the undergrads. Really sorry to hear about this terrible, negligent execution by admin. Thank you for sharing your experience and capturing the frustration.
Thanks! I appreciate it! 😄 And congrats on graduating from law school!!
My brother didn't get to walk either, and we had no idea when he was going to because nothing was ordered. I was nearly passing out from the heat, and the water I did get from the vendors like 30 minutes after I got in line (again, in the heat) was hot by the time I got it and barely did anything for me. I got sunburns, my mom and dad got sunburns, and my brother was sweating so much he was desperate for something to drink by the time Davis cancelled the rest of the ceremony. At the end of it all, my brother said that this seemed like a fitting end for his four years at Davis. Half of his time there was spent in COVID, back and forth between in person and online classes, and then he finishes with quite possibly the most poorly planned graduation I have ever attended. I went home with my parents at around 1 PM after getting some lunch, which was the only redeeming part of the whole experience. I passed out in bed until the next morning. Overall, I would never want to go through this again and I really hope Davis just goes back to their old way of graduating, and most importantly, indoors!
Dang, sorry to hear about your experience ☹️ But congrats to your brother on his graduation!!
Thank you so much for making this video and using your platform to call attention to this devastating day. I hope that the school sees this and the millions of comments all over the internet and that they realize that they need to do better so this may never happen again and by first beginning with those they failed on Friday. With me being part of the group it just hit me that I never got that moment of absolute happiness to know what it’s like to finally walk the stage that I almost feel like I was robbed of the grateful and tears of joy that I could share with my family as a first gen and the experience that this long journey of discovering myself in college chapter is ending. I hope that the university understands this is something they may not be able to bring back to us entirely even with a makeup ceremony for a variety of reasons, like family attendance for one, but they need to do something and compensate us for more than just what they were saying for the cap and gown because if anything those couple dollars will never be enough for what they took away from us.
I appreciate it Estefania! Sorry to hear about your experience and hope you are able to find that closure on college in some way :)
To have attended the event with you and have you retold the story. Wow! You didn’t leave out a single detail. I really wanted to see the girl flipping off stage and the hangry guy lol. Also apologies for not saying goodbye, I got out as soon as possible since my family were dying to leave due to the heat and I was on the verge of collapsing.
It was an honor to have gone through it all with you Tu! And no worries - it was a long day, I think we all just wanted to get out of there as soon as we could 😅 And congrats on graduating!! :)
So sorry about commencement!! In 2021, when I graduated from UCD, commencement was super fast. No speeches or whatever (& no heat stroke lol), but in & out in an hour & lots of shade for the heat!
I guess they got cocky and decided they didn't need to plan much for the following year 😅
I left this message on Reddit too:
I was the first guy in the wheelchair.
About 15 minutes before that point, I had a choice to either leave or go sit under the staging tent. I was just getting over Covid, I was a bit loopy and I needed out of the Sun.
The photog employees (not the school) told me I could go first if I wanted. So I took my pix and went up on stage, where I waited for them to fix the audio.
Hey I was sitting just behind you in the 2nd row, ( I was one of the CoE people who got shuffled into the the L&S area for some reason)
@@theaeecs8004 Did you physically see me in front of you? Did you see me go over to the tent?
Did you get to walk Friday? I hope you did.
What an experience
@@speedspeed121 What an experience indeed
@@speedspeed121 I did! I was behind you to your left, I was the transgal with the floral mask and glasses. This whole incident was absolutely unacceptable.
@@theaeecs8004 So you got to walk? If that's what you meant, congrats!!!
correction: the 10th was on friday
i didn't even find out about the commencement plans until a couple months ago from another graduating senior, so i already knew it was gonna be a shit show. i was in the stands with my bf's aunt and grandparents, on the west side, so we were in the sun the whole time. my bf's grandma nearly had a heat stroke and they had to leave early, like before 10 am. they got back home and watched the rest of the ceremony from there. and the rest of his family was watching in texas. my bf was one of the people who never made it onto the stage. oh and that reddit video didn't capture the automated voice recording that came after the cancelation announcement. perky lady going "congrats grads! you made it! please head over to hutchinson field..." that was just tone-deaf. i've been here at ucd since 2015 and the number of times that gary may fucked up and didn't make changes until students blow up the school's social media is astonishing
anyways, congrats! but this whole situation was easily avoidable 🤦♀️
Thank you!! And sorry to hear about your family's experience :(
This video basically summed up the catastrophe of the UC Davis Class of 2022 graduation. I'm sorry that they didn't allow you to walk Gauruv, but you're still a graduate in my (and everyone else's) eyes 🙂🙂🙂
Thank you Jeff 😌 It's really only that Aggie-to-Aggie acceptance that matters in the end 🤝 And congrats on graduating!! :D
@@GauruvVirk Thank you!
Honestly this sounded like a nightmare from the start. I'm glad i graduated from UCD back in 2018 ugh I'd be pissed if it were me now 💀I appreciate you telling your story with humor and detail tho! 😂 Congrats to y'all, you truly deserved better than this
Thank you!! Appreciate it! 😁
It was pretty terrible. Everyone around me (including myself) were having signs of heat exhaustion (shivering, feeling cold, dizziness). The lines were the worst part. People were being squished in the lines, especially toward the front which increased the heat even more. And on top of that, the stadium lights were on too? Why? If I hadn't of gotten out of the stadium at the time that I did and met up with my family after the announcement I'm pretty sure I would've passed out. My dad said at one point they ran out of water at different water stations and started using hoses to replenish the water. Hose water...
UC Davis was severely unprepared for the heat that happens literally every year around this time. They put so many people in danger and for what? Just so they could have less work with a smaller amount of ceremonies? Worst experience for a graduation I've worked for for 4 years.
So glad that you're letting people know about your experience in all this and making people aware. UC Davis needs to be held accountable.
I'm really sorry to hear about your experience :(( But congrats on graduating! :D
I attended Aggie Day for new freshmen, and had a similar experience with poor planning (however graduation blatantly matters much more). There was no water provided, only one coffee cart for THOUSANDS of people, and there was zero shade or seating. Everywhere was incredibly crowded, including restaurants on campus, so my family and I were unable to eat or drink. On top of this, every indoor event was so packed that it was for sure a super spreader event, and security didn’t check anything or require vaccine cards like they promised. They even rescheduled numerous events so they had us in the sun for hours longer than anticipated. Seems like they have a lot of work to do on events... Sorry to hear about your graduation, congratulations regardless and great video as always!
Damn - seems like their party planning committee is almost as bad as Dunder Mifflin's 😮💨 Sorry to hear about your Aggie Day experience and thank you for the kind words! :)
Seeing myself in some of these pictures is wild, I can't believe I went through that. The university failed on so many levels that I can't help but laugh at the thought of it. I'm not even mad, just laughing now.
Y'know in hindsight it made me think about my highchool graduation. I graduated in the San Fernando Valley where it also reaches into the 110s during the summer, we know this heat. Y'know we have graduations into the thousands ourselves and we hold them outdoors because we don't have a space to house all of them. You wanna know what we did? Have our graduations in the evening. You start at like 6pm when it is already getting cooler and finish when it'll be at a comfortable or even cold temperature. With a ceremony this badly organized with how long it ran, it could have at least been more bearable if they had just looked into how other schools do it. So little research done at this research university.
Damn ya I forgot but high school is a great example - it was 100+ the day of mine and the run through in the morning was miserable, but the late evening graduation was literally perfect
Wow that sounds like hell. It's bad enough with what we've all gone through with Covid etc. Can't blame people for getting mad...Thanks for documenting this and congrats on graduating!
Appreciate it! Thanks! 😄
Fantastic vid my man. I’m really sorry you couldn’t have your name called. I felt so guilty that I was one of the lucky ones. I was out there on the side field trying not to pass out and was one of the last ones into the stadium (despite having showed up at 6:20 am). I was mad about it at first, but being one of the first ones called was sooo lucky. I remember when they started getting us up, we were all complaining like wait wait, we are not engineers, what’s going on. The ppl guiding us were just very rude, not listening, yelling at us to go go go. The organization was never there, and the free for all started from the very first graduate. We tried to follow rules, but I guess it was never an option.
Thank you Patrick! And congrats on graduating!! 🥳 Also, don’t feel guilty about being one of the ones that got to walk! It wasn’t in your control at all, so (ironically) don’t sweat it dude :)
Everyone's been talking about their experiences with commencement in the UCD reddit...my heart goes out to y'all 😓
big F in chat for all the homies 😔
yeah i skipped on saturday because i felt like the whole point of graduationis to get recongized for the work that we all put in so when I woke up and saw that they continued to do things regularly, felt really bad man
Damn, the sucker punch 😕 Sorry to hear that, but congrats on graduating!! :)
I am so sorry you didn't get to walk! My son did get to walk, he was super lucky! This whole graduation was such a cluster and a horrible experience!!!
I'm glad he got to experience it! It was quite the day indeed 😅
@@GauruvVirk well, it also turns out you were in some classes with my son, Connor! I send him your videos sometimes and he told me yesterday he actually knows you. He knew you were working at Intel and he is at Texas Instruments in the Bay. You guys are just setting the world on fire! 😊
Damn that sucks. UC Davis cut corners everywhere. UC Irvine killed it with their angels stadium graduation. Everything started right on time and ended exactly as scheduled. Oh and we had water bottles given to us! Take notes Davis lol
That sounds great! Water bottles are the ultimate flex tho 😮💨
They gave us fans, uci do-rags and even sunglasses, and we had 2 grads. 1 for our school and 1 for campus wide. I thought that was pretty wild considering the cost for all that.
I didn't walk either mate.
I should have been later in the day and indoors like the grad students....
I spent 4 years of my life sleep deprived at UC Davis. I don't need to spend any more time sleep deprived...
They should have just made it later in the day I don't care to have to have 5 days graduation, they should have made it around 5:00 p.m. should have been indoors it should have been super casual and chill. Then after we should have had like a party inside the arc stadium and all relaxed.
Sounds like you should've been on the committee tbh
Honestly, whoever organized this event fucked up big times. They should be fired from the position. I feel like this year's events were all organized poorly. They always host events on days that are ridiculously hot.
Man. I feel bad for the class of 2022
Someone told the planning committee to "bring the heat" this year and they took it too literally
I was also one of the ones that didn't get to walk. Davis was not prepared at all. While we were walking into the stadium they stopped my line (college of Letters and Science) because apparently there wasn't enough seats for us in our section. Half of us ended up sitting in the agriculture and engineering section. On top of that one of the water dispensers wasn't working on the other side (that's not pictured) so we only had two on that side lol and one of them wasn't plugged in so only warm water was coming out.
Ya sadly enough, this all checks out 😅 Congrats on graduating tho!!
I was in the letters and science line and nearly passed out waiting in line before being seated.
@@alyssahayes9100 dang ya it was rough from the get-go 😔
Summary of my four years at UC Davis:
Wild fires 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Crazy homeless people....
Robberies on campus....
No sleep 😴😴😴
Roommate issues
And pandemic...
Lol.
And on the plus side I stayed another year and a half to study computer science. I initially came in for humanities and left with a strong stem background...
Fun times
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The holistic Aggie experience 🙌🏽
The speaker at Biggs Field haunts my nightmares
Definitely coming up at therapy this week
I care about your Eagle Award, Honey Bunny! Thanks for the recap. I felt like I was there with you and your parents. Only it's 68 degrees in my home office... and I'm drinking ice water.... CONGRATS GRADUATE! So proud of you. I can feel your mom beaming with pride!!
BUT... oh man, what a cr@pshow! I feel so blessed that Zoey's college graduation was JUST Chemical Engineers... the ceremony was indoors (after all it was in Seattle - the rainiest city)... plus they had a wine and hors d'oeuvre party afterward... plus plus, since it was on Zoey's actual birthday they had birthday cake to boot. We had to purchase her cap AND gown. So if you ever need a Hogwarts costume....
I was at the Saturday commencement and I also thought that the "security check" was a complete joke.
I think after the "check" I audibly said "oh I can just go in now? aight"
you’re voice is so satisfying bro
I appreciate that, thanks 🤝
late to the party but im glad i finally saw this 😭😭 IT WAS A MESS!!!!!!
FACTS - congrats on graduating tho Macy!! 🥳
@@GauruvVirk WAAAAAH YOU REMEMBER ME :") CONGRATS TO YOU TOO GAURUV!!!
Davis really fucked up. This was also my graduation ceremony and the lack of communication and organization was astonishing. Felt so mad I didn't get to walk.
Sorry to hear that 😔 Congrats on graduating tho!! :)
ah i just saw this, thanks for sharing my comment haha, i'm glad that others agree. this was a really elaborate video, you covered everything really well. the heat management (or lack thereof) was really bad, my parents are still getting over their sunburns from the 10th 😭 even if you didn't get to walk, congrats on graduating! 🥲
Thank you Bea! And I'm sorry it wasn't the experience we were expecting 😅 but ya at the end of the day we did _finally_ graduate from college - so congrats!! 🥳
The fact that the subreddit deleted ur meme is actually hilarious 💀
I also posted this video on there and it got removed too 😅 Apparently both posts were removed “accidentally” but got reapproved after Alex Fisher-Wagner called them out lol
@@GauruvVirk 💀💀💀💀💀
Very informational! Thanks, was wondering what really happened.
No prob! Thanks for watching!! 😄
Hahahahaa the most annoying part honestly was the speakers at the football field. The announcement was stuck in my head for the day. It’s really sad we graduated on such conditions, but best of luck with your future endeavors! Also, I can see myself in the pic at minute 6:30
I'm so glad to hear that everyone else hated those speakers as much as I did lol 🙃 And best of luck to you as well Abdallah!! Congrats again! 👏🏽
Good luck, guys.
Appreciate that 🤝
A fucken legend.
🤝
I graduated 2021 and unfortunately it was done online ! Up to this day my parents always say I never graduated and the AA I show them think it’s fake 💔
Don’t let anyone invalidate you!! You ARE a graduate forever and always, and no one can take that from you! 🤩
Let’s just say I’m watching this video about 5 days after that first graduation ceremony and I’m dealing with a second degree sunburn…😀
Davis really said “make this ceremony unforgettable” 🥴
i didnt get the walk either friday was just TERRIBLE
You hate to see it folks 😔 Congrats on graduating tho! :D
@@GauruvVirk thank you congrats as well 🤍🤍
Orientation for 21-22 was probably just as bad organizational wise or even worse in some regard, as I was an OL for this first orientation back in person in 2 years, complete cluster fuck. Seems our procrastination habits as students is rubbing off on the event staff lol.
damn lol
Davis got decently good parties
nice
My sister lucky had the Latinx Graduation inside the U Center.
Damn, what a flex
Congrats on graduating even though you didn't get to walk.
Thanks!! :D
i was part of that ceremony too, so disappointed in our university
Ya it’s kinda shocking how poorly the whole thing went 😬
Thanks for your info. This is very funny.. you are funny.. engineer major?? Really..
my daughter is starting this fall at UCD.- graduate in 4 years, is that possible?? Any advice?
I appreciate it! Thanks! 😄 Four years is definitely doable - I would say have her lay out her four year plan (class-by-class) and make sure she is clear on what classes have prerequisites and when those prereq classes are offered (some classes aren’t offered every quarter, so that might push out her projected completion date if she has to wait for the class to be available)
I haven't even transferred yet but I don't think I really care that much about my graduation ceremony but it would be nice to have one. I just wouldn't act inappropriately.
Graduations are cool (or I guess hot in this case)
@@GauruvVirk lol yeah. I hope I can go to U.C. Davis. I'm interested in chemical or electrical engineering. I also like horticulture and economics.
As a freshman, it was so clear from orientation how much bullshit the admin give to their students (and faculty). Luckily I had a great orientation leader and taught our group all the bs the school advertises. At this point, I might as well not go to the graduation ceremony
I think graduations are still dope (as long as chaos doesn’t ensue lol)
I so wanted to go to Davis
But not anymore?
Sorry this happened. You all deserve better. Very unprofessional. The board should fire the University leaders for this poor performance.
Ya it was a rough one out there 😮💨
What's with your Yoda voice?
what
Ayyy another EE person, did you get shuffled into the L&S area also for some bizarre reason? This shit was weird and miserable.
Yoooo what's up, ya I thought we were in the wrong section at first and then I quickly realized it didn't matter lol
@@GauruvVirk Yeah, that was absolutely bizarre, I have no idea what was going on behind the scenes to produce such a comical shitshow that hospitalized people with heatstroke.
Shit school, I got rejected off the waitlist and I'm glad i did lol
lol
Hello you might not know the answer to this question but it’s worth a shot. I’m a transfer student going into UC Davis in fall 2022. My SIR requirements said I had to pass my current math class with a B, do you know if my admissions would get revoked if I passed with a C instead?
I can't say for sure what will happen, sorry :(
this is insanely unrelated, but you sound just like penguinz0
I’ve gotten this before lol - shoutout to my man Charlie 🐧
I’m so glad I didn’t commit to Davis 😐
lol
20:43 bit of an overreaction 😭😭😭
justified tbh
