Mako Boat Rebuild Video #4
Removing Main Stringer & Tabbing in Coosa Board
1972 Mako 171cc, This is video #4 showing you guys start to finish how to cut out the old stringers, make a template to cut a new stringer out of coosa board, fiberglassing the coosa board in.
You can see the new stringers will be ran all the way to the floor using coosa board for the stringer core: strongest & lightest
newer boats use foam & old boats use wood, why? to cut costs.

Stringer Part 2 coming soon
That board ain't cheap ❤❤, good work
Sure ain’t lol lucky the place I get it from is much cheaper than anywhere else! FCGI
FGCI
Coosa Board is the right choice, you didn't go cheap. Keep the videos coming, looking forward to the next one! Great work!
Thanks man, never understood the foam core stringers lol
I used 1in Divinycell for stringers because I have 7-8 sheets just in my stringers and bulkheads. Woulda cost an arm and a leg in Coosa. I did use 7-8 sheets of Coosa for my deck and cap
You are an inspiration for me to get my boat finished and back out on the water
Thanks !!!🤙🏼 new video coming soon
So your saying some of the other boat rebuilders make it look easier than it is. I’ll watch the next
Looking good! It helps a little to wrap the stringers in glass outside the boat. That way there is less bending over to do it in the boat.
Keep up the vids. Inspired me to tackle the old mako181 I have myself. Got in de rigged and stripped yesterday cutting floors out tonight.
thanks! and most deff 🤙🏼
found your channel because I like to watch the make overs. Great job so far cannot wait to follow along and see the end results.
Thanks man appreciate it! Definitely will be done another one after this one gets done
No pun intended I'm in the same boat, I'm restoring a 18 cat. I'm about 90% done with the building and glass work. It is a lot of tedious work but we'll worth it at the end.
Restore a cat sound very interesting… might have to try one out next. But the build a glass work definitely sucks but after that is when it gets fun!
Hey man looks good. It’s a little easier if you glass the stringers on a table out of the boat then just tab them into the boat. It’s always easier to work outside the boat then on your knees in the boat.
thanks! I would've done that if i was using wood, cause yea it a back killer lol..... I'm planning on tabbing & laying a layer or two of 1708 down so I have some structural support and once all the stringer are laid in going back over each section and tying it all in with sheets of 1708. Video Part 2 will show it all.
Doing it in the boat allows you to use part of the layup for tabbing and saves time and money..
Big job--nice work.
thanks!🤙🏼
Awesome work. You have me interested in the project. Great videos keep up the good work !
thanks! Get one going!!! 🤙🏼
Great vids... I also have a 171 that I am restoring. I was hoping to get a lot done during winter before the heat kicked in again but in Miami theres no such thing as winter lol.
hahaha brutal heat down here
Why did you do the new stringer so much taller than the originals? Is the new tank that much taller or are you raising the deck?
You might want to try a disposable roller for applying the epoxy...quicker so you have more time to work with the glass. Also if you pour the epoxy into a disposable paint tray it won't kick off as quick.
Thanks for tip! Appreciate it 🤙🏼
Hell yea
Where'd you go let's see this get complete
GoPro broke but got another one… working on the edit now should be out on Monday 🤙🏼
Hey around 3:30 to 4:20 can you explain why you laid all that in the keel and what you did with the mixture there? Did you pour all that resin to let it hold the stringer while you set it, or let it dry and set stringer on top?
Fire videos and work by the way! Extremely good $hit you got goin on here
Any thought to rounding over the the top of the stringers? Would that help wrap the fiberglass mat?
Yes, the plan is to lay out all the stringers and bulkheads glass them in at the bottom with a couple layers and then make sure everything is leveled and then round it and glass it all in
What size was that fuel tank? Like how many gallons
Dude more updates!!!!!
Tomorrow I’ll be releasing a new video on the rebuild 🤙🏼 🤙🏼
How much coosa did you end up ordering ?
For the stringers 1 sheet of 1in
For the transom 1 sheet of 1 1/4in
For the floors 3 sheets of 1/2in
Hi sir u from nz.
South Florida 🤙🏼
I want to work with you to make your videos go viral on social media and do SEO. Every video of yours wants to reach millions of people
thanks
Not sure why you didn't get a mold and build a new boat.
Where did you get your fuel tank from?
West Marine carries a variety of tanks and they seem to be the cheapest 🤙🏼
Will be waiting on part 2 bro 👍 I’m watching and learning I have a project coming soon on a 21’ seahawk transom..never did this kind of work so let’s see..oh and never lending my boat out again 😂
Get yourself some nitrile gloves. Latex gloves do not protect you from epoxy absorption as well.
i noticed that lol
