When I was watching the draft in real time, my spidey senses started tingling when KC jumped 17 spots with a big trade. It tingled even more when they picked a QB. It seemed like the Chiefs had "insider info" that no one else had. After the draft, I was curious to figure out why they wanted Mahomes so bad. When he started in his 2nd year, then I knew the answer.
Ive no doubts they were totally confident in the pick. The trade up, everything. But not even they knew in their wildest dreams exactly WHAT they were getting! Quite simply the best player at any position to have ever played the game.
I didn't let myself get too hyped right away, you never know how guys are going to translate to the NFL. The left handed pass made me hope. By the third game of the next season I knew we had something special. He was like Jordan in that, at least once in every game he does something amazing. Getting ready for the playoffs in 2021, winning our first SB in my era last year, it's crazy to think we might not have gotten him and now that we did, we may have years and years of the best qb in the league. I'm truly thankful and I will not forget nor take for granted what we have in KC right now.

And Allen, although improved - can’t hit a deep pass and is very erratic. Mahomes is a every 15-20 years kind of talent. The Bills are good. The Chiefs are great! I guess it’s more embarrassing for the Bears - they actually picked Trubisky at 2 (and even traded up to get him). It’s just amazing how teams didn’t see what the Chiefs saw in Mahomes. In this trade the bills ended up with a superstar cornerback in Tre White and then used the 2018 pick they got to draft pro bowl linebacker Tremaine Edmunds. Then this year we essentially trade Justin Jefferson for Stefon Diggs. I love when it works out very well for both squads.

Brett Veach (now their GM - then their Co-Director of Player Personal/ex scout) was the one that scouted Mahomes and told Dorsey that Mahomes was the most talented QB he’s ever seen, and begged him to trade up for him. Of course Dorsey got the final say and Reid was the last to sign off on it. Have to remember, they still had a quality QB in Alex Smith - they didn’t NEED a QB. Without Veach, Mahomes is not a Chief. That’s why he got that promotion to GM.
That's why the mentality of taking best player of available instead of need works out better sometimes.
