i used to sing my kids to sleep with this song, this version is the prettiest i've ever heard since the original studio work from the boys way back when, thank you, bought a tear to my eye, just beautiful with the Bobby harmony at the end.
As a long time Deadhead I gotta say that you nailed it with your piece up there^^' John Mayer has done the same for us old Deadheads too. Look at Billy and Mickey throughout this tune. These are grizzled old guys breathing new life and John Mayer is the reason for that. Bobby has come alive because of your hero. These are great tunes and JM knows it and he show all the respect due. Jerry would be very happy to see this iteration. I know it in my bones.
I couldn't agree more. Before the show I was talking to everyone around me and they were shocked that I was there for JM... But they thought it was so cool that this new lineup is bringing in a whole new wave of fans
Kim ladd... bless you! I feel it, too. I never ever thought it could be like this. And you're right, John does show respect. (I'm crying...) because it's such a beautiful thing!
@@chaferbud At least the music that we love isn’t Dead yet. I don’t feel like a traitor to the original Dead lineup and really enjoy this current iteration . 3 cheers for the living and 3 more for the Dead!
this guy says ' what do you want me to do' soooo well , that it means what it's supposed to mean. Thanks so much for posting and for the music. Been listening to this all f....in day, also BIRD SONG ... these guys are .....
A "new" fan courtesy of Dead & Co?? (I'm aware this was posted in '16 😄). Few things make me happier ✌🏻 This bunch doesn't care where or when your bus stop was; only that you chose to get on. Love to see it. Hope the last 6 years have been face-meltingly positive and memorable, despite a lot of darkness in the world.
I still miss Jerry. : ( I was at their 2nd to last show in Tampa 1995, not knowing it would be the last time I'd see him.21 years later and there's still a void.So happy the band is till playing (Let there be songs to fill the air) and this JM guy's soul has been transformed forever.
chaferbud, I've been following you for awhile, so we are both devoted John Mayer fans. I agree with all you said. I'm so madly in love with this music and grateful to him for bringing me so deep into the Grateful Dead music. This band is the best I've ever experienced and John is at the top of his game, and he's happier than he's ever been in his life...this is life-changing for him professionally and personally. This recording of Box of Rain is GOLD! MANY, MANY thanks!!! Tomorrow night's my turn to see D&Co 2016 at Hartford!
I'm very grateful to you for your pristine video of John performing this gorgeous, iconic song. It must be such a thrill and honor for him...he's earned this, and then some. This song is so moving.
I'm not big on all the recreations of the Dead since Jerrys" death, but i do have to say that Bobby has always assembled people who played the music faithfully, and with the soul and reverence that it deserves. without trying to BE Jerry or Phil. Warren, John , and Oteil have absorbrd it as their own, and for that i thank them
My dog passed away tonight and my friend sent me this song. Can't listen to it without shedding a tear. This sing brings a whole new meaning to my life. Thanks Dead and Co see ya again next summer.
Thank you, Chaferbud. My favorite Dead song, now performed by my favorite artist. I, too, have followed you for quite some time and am always happy when you upload something, because your videos are always such great quality. I think John being with the Dead is perfect; he has always strived to expand himself and not stuck to one genre, always growing as an artist and as a person. He is one of the most talented people I have ever come across. I wish Dead & Co. would come to my area in South Florida!
I was here as a present for mine and my ex's birthdays. Best birthday ever. We were right behind where this is filmed. I will never forget this special day. We may even be in this video. lol
Didnt care that much about john mayer until i found out that he is doing a great job of carrying on the legacy. Much respect to john mayer and the band .
Yeah, yeah, yeah - the boy is easy on the eye - can't deny that! Mayer's drop dead gorgeousness distracts me from the reality that Jerry is dead & Bobby is old & gross. Sue me!
Been a JM fan for years (2003) but Dead Head longer(1980)...I'm so impressed how well John is fitting in. This song bring tears and I can only hope they play it at Alpine Valley!
Look out of any window Any morning, any evening, any day Maybe the sun is shining Birds are winging or rain is falling from a heavy sky [Chorus 1] What do you want me to do To do for you to see you through? For this is all a dream we dreamed One afternoon, long ago [Verse 2] Walk out of any doorway Feel your way, feel your way like the day before Maybe you'll find direction Around some corner where it's been waiting to meet you [Chorus 2] What do you want me to do To watch for you while you are sleeping? Then please don't be surprised When you find me dreaming, too [Guitar Solo] [Verse 3] Look into any eyes you find by you You can see clear through to another day Maybe it's been seen before through other eyes On other days while going home [Chorus 3] What do you want me to do To do for you, to see you through? It's all a dream we dreamed One afternoon, long ago [Verse 4] Walk into splintered sunlight Inch your way through dead dreams to another land Maybe you're tired and broken Your tongue is twisted with words half spoken and thoughts unclear [Chorus 4] What do you want me to do To do for you, to see you through? A box of rain will ease the pain And love will see you through [Verse 5] Just a box of rain, wind, and water Believe it if you need it, if you don't, just pass it on Sun and shower, wind and rain In and out the window like a moth before a flame [Outro] And it's just a box of rain I don't know who put it there Believe it if you need it Or leave it if you dare And it's just a box of rain Or a ribbon for your hair Such a long long time to be gone And a short time to be there
Mayor definitely knows how to sing "properly" if he was being graded from a professional standpoint. I definitely believe Lesh sang with more emotion most of the time. The Dead had a chemistry like no other band and when they were having a good night (which happened a lot more often in the 70's) they all sang and played in sync as if one giant brain was having a musical conversation. The highest level of musical communication in my opinion. They always gave it all they had. That's one of the reasons why I love the dead so much. Their music was from the soul.
this is great band for a guitarist who got bored with pentatonic and he want to use other scales but he cant really play jazz. In GD John can explore myxolidan mode for 15 minutes during one song, good for him. This songs reminds me of Buckets of Rain by Dylan
Did you video the whole show? I missed it due to funeral stuff. I am old Dead head since the 60's and was skeptical when they announced John. But have to say he is a nice flavor of Grateful Dead
I really wanted to enjoy the show so I didn't film that much. This was the only full song I got. I'm sorry you missed the show though. There should be plenty of other people who recorded the rest of it
I love it when John plays ...I dislike when he sings. Please understand that it's my opinion. He tells a different story than the one that I grew up hearing. His guitar is amazing. I just hate the Jerry Phil in. However.. the music never stopped!
chaferbud - go the next logical step and listen to the dead on mushrooms. You will find those 22 minute songs from 1977 are not self indulgent, but instead are exactly what is required. Jerry was playing for people who were tripping. He knew it.
Yes I've heard so much Badmouthing of JM covering Garcia's part in this band, but hey - I WAS THERE in 1970 to SEE THEM, and this ain't half bad!! I'm to the point where I no longer CARE who's covering Dead songs, ....."as long as they're doin' it right"....(as Pigpen sang on American Beauty). And the Dead, with JM , are doin' it right, by God.
Agreed. The guys on fucking fire. I didn't see my first show till 85 and I miss Jerry so much but I know hes dancing to this shit. Took me 20+ years after to be able to even listen to any of the music but when I started up again I gradually started to listen to some D&C. Long story short, Im ready for a fucking show.
These were an excellent, very well played, set of shows. Dare I say that JM sings "Box Of Rain" better than Phil? I think when this band splits up John should bring this song to his solo shows. I also wouldn't call Dead & Company a "John Mayer side project." He is really more of a guest in their band.
Sorry, I just don't agree. Began seeing the Grateful Dead in 1973 and saw many shows, too numerous to remember. I suspect that Phil is having a good laugh. Don't get me wrong here, JM is a good guitarist and is continuing to improve, impress, and fit-in.So lets not get carried away, its not ' better than Phil'. Also, Phil and Friends, or Phil whatever, always tour with Excellent guitarists.
Guitarwise sure but vocally, Mayer beats Phil in just about every way. And yea, I like Phil singing Phil's songs, he obviously set the standard for how they should sound but Mayer's voice still sounds better.
Best love song ever written. About a man and his father. This is the best version I've ever heard.
John's voice really recalls the sweetness Phil once had on the studio version. Wish they would sing this more.

Made me teary, too!
I also sing it to my kids, they are in their 30's. They just roll their eyes and say, looks like the old man is gettin on.
Funny - I was never a JM fan (did not really ever listen to him) but was brought to him by Dead & Co. - Now I am a big fan!

JM really did a great job with this. The whole tour.. Wish I could've caught a show.

I used to sing this to my girls at night. I knew when I first heard it at 14 that one day it'd be a lullaby for my children:)
I was there and was genuinely floored by their performance. The truckin>he's was so good
glad to see john was able to introduce you to our world. welcome to the trip.

Sometimes John looks like he's having waaay too much fun.

Look out of any window
Any morning, any evening, any day

Birds are winging or rain is falling from a heavy sky
[Chorus 1]
What do you want me to do
To do for you to see you through?
For this is all a dream we dreamed

[Verse 2]
Walk out of any doorway
Feel your way, feel your way like the day before
Maybe you'll find direction
Around some corner where it's been waiting to meet you

What do you want me to do
To watch for you while you are sleeping?
Then please don't be surprised
When you find me dreaming, too
[Guitar Solo]
[Verse 3]
Look into any eyes you find by you
You can see clear through to another day
Maybe it's been seen before through other eyes
On other days while going home
[Chorus 3]
What do you want me to do
To do for you, to see you through?
It's all a dream we dreamed
One afternoon, long ago
[Verse 4]
Walk into splintered sunlight
Inch your way through dead dreams to another land
Maybe you're tired and broken
Your tongue is twisted with words half spoken and thoughts unclear
[Chorus 4]
What do you want me to do
To do for you, to see you through?
A box of rain will ease the pain
And love will see you through
[Verse 5]
Just a box of rain, wind, and water
Believe it if you need it, if you don't, just pass it on
Sun and shower, wind and rain
In and out the window like a moth before a flame
[Outro]
And it's just a box of rain
I don't know who put it there
Believe it if you need it
Or leave it if you dare
And it's just a box of rain
Or a ribbon for your hair
Such a long long time to be gone
And a short time to be there

I agree. Although I don't think of that way.. there are people that take it too seriously and will think of it as disrespect.
They should do it as a joke to John, tell them they are playing a Dead song and bust into "New Light" and Bobby take vocals 😂
