This was the day they first met. Mayer was recording at Don Was’ studio and Bob stopped by to say hi to Don. Don introduced John to Bob and John invited him to play that night on the show he was guest hosting. They jammed for 2 hrs in sound check and it went so well they both decided they should do it more…and Dead and Co was born. Fun 7 years. I’m going to miss seeing that band.

I’m happy to see that John really recovered his ego and let himself go when he joined dead and comp. Yeah he'd had a rough time in the few years before, with personal problems, vocal problems, surgeries etc. I think joining the Dead brought him his confidence back on stage
John started listening to the Grateful Dead, when Letterman retired, Craig Ferguson expected he was getting Dave's spot, when he didn't, he quit. John was an interim host until they got what's his name James Cordon or whatever as host of the Late Show Thank you Craig!
From this…fast forward a few years to 2021…their live version of Althea at Citi Field was so good and John absolutely killed it. John really sounds good with the Dead now. Even from when I saw them in 2017 compared to now they are better.

THAT WAS AWESOME!! After watching this and the Truckin' vids, fears of a Dead/Mayer tour have been quelled. I always knew John was a hell of a musician (check out his John Mayer Trio! It's rocking!!), but was kind of on the fence of how his style would blend with Dead music. It's works. It helps add a bit of that mid-late 70's Dead groove again. I'm digging it.
I think of the communication (relationship, if you will) between Jerry and each of his band mates during their jams. For example, a lot can be observed going on between Jerry and Bob without a single word being spoken or more than just a quick eye contact. Then a similar communication between Jerry and Phil without even an eye contact. Then between Jerry and Brent. Jerry was a such a strong pillar of the band. Greatest band on the face of this planet.

Just saw Bob and the boys last week and I swear when he sang" The Other One" I had literall cold chills, he sounded so good!!
Flat no range
Kelter kills it! What a groove machine
Mayer is a special talent... even could have been a comedian...actually reminds me of Letterman, but with a guitar. Could see him with his own late show down the road...he's a natural...
yeah, multi talented dude
J Michael Caton funny you said that 3 years ago. He’s actually trying that nowadays
You called it brother. I would say his Instagram show is better than some late night talk shows out there.
Now you got me imagining John Mayer's late night talk show where he interviews a band or musical artist that he enjoys but isn't getting the spotlight he believes they deserve, then joins them on stage at the end of the show. I would tune in to every episode of that.
News today is that's about to happen. A show called "Later", on CBS Paramount, prob once weekly. I don't have all the facts yet, so keep a lookout.
Blows my mind how many shows Bob has played and he is still sounding as good as he did as a young kid. Cheers
Sometimes you gotta go back…to actually go forward
Hope we get more random stops of John and Bob together even after the final stops
Bob wier is one of the smoothest humans ever.
1:58 That not-hitting the cymbal on drumms :D
sometimes it's the sound you don't make, right?
Like Charlie Watts
@@JoePastorgomez funny you mention that Keltner is connected to Charlie Watts and to Steve Jordan for that matter...and Levon Helm. the greatest stickmen :)
@@louiscarrillo5873 right on!
Saw them 8/01 at the Sphere. A wow that will last for us. John may not be Jerry, but he sure blends in well with Bobby.
Truly, the music never stopped.
Have you guys all seen Bobs biography? His life is an inspiration, and Jerry played a big part of that. Love ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜✨Grateful
Been looking for John Mayer; looks so terrific in this video and sounds even better, great musician
Pure electricity, John knows how to fire Bob up. Great musical chemistry
Great to see Keltner playing with them! There's a legend of the recording industry right there.
Being a 90s kid, john mayer made me discover grateful death and I'm thankful for that. this whole thing people call music is AWESOME
grateful dead*
Welcome aboard The Bus.
God it’s amazing how far they’ve come in just 4 years
Weir is the most unique player ever
Lol ok
Nobody like him ever. So lucky to be able to see him play. God bless the Weirwolf.
@@brianfergus839 you obviously haven’t listened to Bobby play much lol
@@notagiantseaslug5523 I’ve listened plenty. Bob is a competent player, a decent singer, and a nice guy. 👍
I will add though that what he is very good at is playing the accompaniment part; he is quite a tasteful player- you’re probably right he is unique in that regard.
@@brianfergus839 generous on the singer assessment, but....
To quote a Dead lyric... "Where does the time go?" how was this 8 years ago...
Mayer is a talented goofball.
3 and a half years later and STILL going strong!! Keep on Truckin
Jim Keltner!!! That guy is a legend. Played on the Wilburys, played in Harrison's touring band... played with Petty in studio...
Wow.
Perhaps my favorite Dead song, also Row Jimmy. But picking one is like trying to pick your favorite child.
Mayer really loosened up after he joined the dead and company
I think it is because he is actually enjoying himself on stage again
Yeah he'd had a rough time in the few years before, with personal problems, vocal problems, surgeries etc. I think joining the Dead brought him his confidence back on stage
I think it’s Mickeys weed
He was plenty loose before that.
@@elmoblatch9787 agreed, did some more looking into him since my comment lol
This should be clipped into an evolution video of John mayers guitar playing for Grateful Dead music. It’s crazy to hear it
John started listening to the Grateful Dead, when Letterman retired, Craig Ferguson expected he was getting Dave's spot, when he didn't, he quit. John was an interim host until they got what's his name James Cordon or whatever as host of the Late Show Thank you Craig!
Timing is everything
The seed of Dead & Company, right here.
Man, that bass is killer.
Mr.Maia Didn't notice until you mentioned it. spot on
SATedeschi Gotta love Sean Hurley
+Brandon Shoop that's THE Bob Weir! I had to look it up and according to google sean hurley plays bass for john mayer
+Mr.Maia Is that the dude that used to be in The Roots? Dont know his name but it looks like him
+Nick Jones Thats Sean Hurley from ex Vertical Horizon, and of course John Mayer´s last band line up
Cool effect on Bob’s guitar. Sweet version ! Love it!
Did everyone miss the legend, Jim Keltner, on the drums?
Fantastic, they captured the soul of the song with this great performance.
From this…fast forward a few years to 2021…their live version of Althea at Citi Field was so good and John absolutely killed it. John really sounds good with the Dead now. Even from when I saw them in 2017 compared to now they are better.
This place has been hot for decades! Thank you John Mayer for extending the journey....
John Mayer is out there living that life! Already super successful and then Bobby Weir taps you in to join the greatest band in the history of history.
" ... the greatest band in the history of history." 🙄
Bob is so humble, an extremely underrated player, you have no idea how many leads he actually plays on the dead stuff
Mayer Althea’s sound so different now
Mayer looks different too. Less like a straight more like a Hippie freak!
Yeah they do!
Has a lot to do with him not using his normal PRS guitars and affects and instead using a strat
I remember watching this live and being delighted. The birth of a new sound and a new style for my favorite Dead tunes!
You can see the moment where Bobby decides that he didn't want this to end. He gets a big old grin on his face.
Boy you sure can't miss that sound can you. I saw the Dead several times and always had a great time, it's nice to see the sound continue.
Thank you to all the Althea's out there! Me included. :-)))))
Jim Keltner! The greatest! The legend! 😍💋
Love how Bob keeps moving in as if to say "don't just solo, play with the band."
Great observation. I was reading this just as he did it.
Thanks for supporting my music 🎶 I’m so grateful 🥰 and I hope you never stop being a fan, have you ever been to any of my concerts?
@@bobbyweir9279 I have been to more than 200 shows since 1978. I can't think you enough for the joy, the community and the mind expansion - not only through "Dark Star" but the musicians, writers and other artists I learned about through the Dead and Deadheads. Forever Grateful!
@@j.pederzane9692 you realize you're talking to a fake account and possibly a scammer right?
This was 6 years ago wow. Makes me so happy Phil and bob are still kicking it. John (and other artists) are doing so well keeping the love alive.
Wild! Who knew what it would become. Seeing these last shows in SF...it sure came a long way!
John has earned my respect. Jerry is forever in our hearts and always will be. .........The Beat Goes On!
bob wier is a tru legend my man is so chill lounging playn err bodys fav songs
Dead N Co at the sphere is the greatest concert I’ve been to
exactly! I was there for their first concert at the sphere!
Without Jerry it's just not the same
tbh, can't believe this sound is "#live." bob weir's voice shines like the sound of an angel
I wasn't sure bobby could pull off the vocals and Mayer the guitar like Jerry,, but this is my favorite song and i'm glad they play it
One of my Favorite ‘Dead Songs!
Damn. It'd be awesome if they formed a band!
Y'all totally skipping over Jim Keltner's greatness on drums. He's making this.
Andy Odom You're right....a great master, beautiful groove and style....:) Thanks for be aware...;)
Andy Odom My thoughts exactly listening to this. Drums really stick out in their greatness.
Andy Odom Great work on the drum for sure! Keltner honed in on Kreutzmann with excellence. Garcia and Weir's guitar work are phenomenal, but Bill's drums, are so great. Really cool to see Weir step in with Mayer and crew
Lol
amen man. amen
Crazy to think that 6 years has gone by and now these 2 jam together all the time
bob weir is taking and pushing john meyer to the other side of planet, this is so awesome
Thanks for supporting my music 🎶 I’m so grateful 🥰 and I hope you never stop being a fan, have you ever been to any of my concerts?
One of my favorite dead songs.
