Jerry's intelligence, perception and wit are on full display here, what an honor it is to have heard his voice and the music. Bob seemed reeeeeeealy high on something, but it was very interesting to see how he snapped into focus with Dave's question about being isolated. They both connected with that question and instantly got past the awkwardness into an honest conversation. Dave was/is a master of his craft, make no mistake. That was a hell of a question he asked, I wish they had stayed on that topic more.
That's so weird...when I was a kid my grandmother had a coffee mug with a frog at the bottom...the first time I ever saw it...she gave me milk in it lol
thats always so weird to think of, sitting here as a 49 years old im still looking at Jerry thinking hes much older than me. because i always saw him as an older generation than me and i guess my mind still just automatically see them as older than me. but i mean if Bob is only 34 here how old is Dave, he doesnt really look any younger to me but he is talking to them about the 60s as if he werent there too. yeah not in their circles but he was still there.

Just listened to some solo Weir and some Bobby & the Midnites before finding this channel. Wish I would have been a Deadhead back in the day. Must have been a blast.
I don’t think Bobby was twisted here. Maybe worn out and coked up, but not too weird. I don’t know him personally, I could be wrong, but I don’t think so.
@@likehell5803incorrect. Jerry never said anything about hip hop. He said rapping as a art form is not a type of music which is true. Hip hop is still music and he was smart enough to make the distinction.
I'm sure Jerry and Bobby made a bet backstage on how soon Letterman would ask them about the "Drug-Culture" in Frisco. It was the Grateful Dead's ingenious idea to allow fans to record and circulate tapes of the concerts that built a world-wide army of Dead-Heads. RIP Jerry, Pig Pen, Brent and Vince.
No need to bet. Someone from the show comes into the green room before the show just to talk, from that comes Dave’s (or any late night host’s) questions. It’s done to tip each other’s hands, so the interview goes more smoothly. It also a way to have Jerry and Bob not get asked a question that they might not want. Watch him when he tries to sing the Monkey and The Engineer and Garcia is laughing at him - haha
I saw the dead in concert at least 5 times and I don't remember any of the concerts. They say that if you can remember a Dead concert you weren't actually there.
No, actually that just means you're one of the idiots that wasn't there for the music and dragged the scene down. Real Deadheads can handle their medicine and remember every note!

Dave was still so new and awkward at this early stage in the show when he was interviewing his guests. I would have loved to have seen him interview these two about three years later, when he had his confidence and biting humor in full effect. He would have had a field day with them at their expense, particularly Weir. HA!
These are people, I cringingly recall now, who were far more literate, funny and all-around intelligent than the condescending interviewers questioning them. And I think even someone as talented as David Letterman would now, in retrospect, concede that.
