    Great to see this review. I have had mine for some time. i hesitated in buying this lens as i had a SWD 50-200 with m4/3 adaptor to use with markii. Finally obtain the 50-150 2.8 and WOW have never used the older lens again, even though it served me well with 4/3 e5. i use it a lot to shoot my grandsons youth soccer along with the 300 f4 and em1mii and em1x and 1.4 teleconverter. Thanks for all you do for us oly shooters.

    Good review Peter. I bought this lens several years ago when I got my first Olympus camera, EM1 MkI. I use it for everything. It is my favourite wildlife lens by far. Sometimes it just requires a little extra stealth to get closer to the animals. Very often, on safari in South Africa, the bush is closed in enough that 150mm is all you really need. While photographing Spirit bears in British Columbia we were able to watch the bears catching salmon within 50 meters. This lens was perfect for the task. For longer distances I use the Panasonic 100-400. I have tried the Olympus 300mm but prefer the flexibility of a zoom lens for wildlife.

    Nice coincidence, I repurchased this lens last week to complement my OM-D E-M1II. I used this lens in the past on my E-M1 (classic) and E-M5 (classic). although optically a great lens I sold my complete m43 system a couple of years ago in favour of an APS-C system with some regrets. Last February I purchased the E-M1mk2 with 12-40mm f/2.8 pro and 25mm f/1.2 pro as I wanted to dive again into m43. So far I am very happy with this setup. The next weeks I will have the opportunity to use the 40-150 f/2.8 in a variety of situations and looking forward to the results. Updated the body to fw 3.1 and the lens to fw 1.3 and a big thank you for your tips regarding configuration and exposure in your previous videos.

    I use that lens a lot for nighttime kids sports. I works great with my G9 and the images still look great a 6400 ISO. At f2.8 it is already sharp and lets me keep my shutter speed high enough.

    This lens (and the Mc14 teleconverter) has seldom been off my E-M5MkIi since i purchased it 3 years ago. It is fast, sealed against rain, sand, dust, has the manual focus clutch, close focus to 7m (even with MC14!) and producs pin sharp images. The telecoping lenshood is a great space saving design and the tripod mount is solid and dependable. As close to perfect as I have ever owned. The 12-40 Pro is a close second!

    I like using vintage 75-210 lenses with adapters on my G85 -- of course it means a lot more manual stuff, but the focal range is pretty cool (150-410 on micro-four-thirds) -- but I also love that focal length range on the original vintage 35mm cameras -- it's just tough (and still expensive) to find the low-aperture versions of the lenses. Thank you Peter!

  • @wilbuzllf5057
    @wilbuzllf5057 4 года назад +2

    While it's not my all time favorite lens (though it's way up there) it is without a doubt my most used lens. I love it for portraits but also for actions sports, some wild life if I can get close enough (very rare, the 300F4 is better for that), macro, some landscapes and really most other things. The focal range is so versatile and the extra 100mm reach compared to a 70-200 is worth so much! Not to mention the sharpness, weather sealing and micro contrast. Only thing one could wish for (apart from a lens hood that doesn't explode time after time again) is some better quality of the bokeh with busy backgrounds but it's not the end of the world.

  • @MALBACHinc
    @MALBACHinc 23 минуты назад

    Bought the lens yesterday and head to the zoo on the way back. This not so tiny lens suprise me like crazy. For the first time I got the round bokeh larger than the subject (bird closeup) . This is a must have lens for everything with sharp images it can produce. Just my 2 cents. For birding in the wild, an extender is almost a compulsory as 300mm is not enough as the bird spook and flew as it heard some tiny crack stepping on dried leaves. Also, Ive tried stay stationary and be quiet for 10 minutes. Birds start popping up in the scene revealing themselves again. Jumping from fullframe to m43 suprises me from time to time. If I was rich, the best money can buy might not thrill casual shooter like me.
    Now im in dilema whether to pair the lens with mc14 or mc20. 14 I can still crop the original photos a bit, but 20 some say I will loose quite a lot quality let alone lower aperture. Yet losing some shaprnes taken from the pro Lens probably bearable than a budget 300mm (just my guess). Seems like its more worthy to double up the length . My main use for the camera is video which i pair with 17mm 1.8 cheap old lens. It was fine. But for traveling, I would rather capture things that cant be shot easily with phones. Hope I can hear your thought a word or two on this situation.

I have had the MC-14 teleconverter for several years and I just purchased the MC-20; the combination with the 40-150mm F2.8 provides extreme flexibility. I recently posted some photos on the 'Olympus E-M1II and E-M1X' Facebook group page which shows the combination retains great image quality. I have the non-pro (f4-5.6) version of this lens. It's nice. Sharp and decent construction even if it's plastic. I've used it for landscape, portraits, and travel, but there are three problems with it.
    One, it has a variable aperture, and while f5.6 is OK, I really notice it in low light and certain portraits. Secondly, the lens isn't weather sealed, and I find dust deep inside the lens and it's a pain to get out. Thirdly - and possibly the most galling - it is one of those dog-d1ck lenses where the front element "emerges" as you zoom in! I can't stand it. 😂
    I'll be upgrading asap - glad to see the examples you used match my use cases. Thanks for the review!

    Thanks, enjoyed it. Many years ago I owned the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom but after two years I sold it because it was just too big & bulky. Later I switched to Canon FF and had the 80-200 f/4 which was easier to handle. For the past 7 years I've been an Olympus MFT user and living with the Panasonic 45-175mm f/4-5.6 zoom. That's a very good lens, sharp, and amazingly small.
    For fun last year I rented the lens you talk about in this video, the 40-150mm f/2.8. Wow! So clear, sharp and fast focussing! A well built, high quality lens for sure. But . . . it sure is big compared to all my other MFT lenses. Actually I'd need a new camera bag to accommodate it. Still, its excellent performance haunts me so--maybe one day. P.S., I rented the Panasonic 50-200mm f/2.8-4 last year, and I was very disappointed. The autofocus struggled even in daytime light, and although it's a little smaller than the Olympus 40-150, it still felt like a very heavy lens.

    Enjoy your videos Peter. Although I love this lens, the clever hood design ended up being a pain and in it's place I used a rubber hood screwed into the filter thread. Not only is this more convenient but it reduces the weight further.

    • @AskewRichard
      @AskewRichard 5 месяцев назад +1

      Hi, I too had the lens hood fail on me and lost 2 of the ball bearings, but luckily none of the springs.
      I liked the novel design and thought it was poor
      execution at fault and decided to repair rather than replace.
      I bought a replacement 10 (1mm, I think) 4:05 BBs on Ebay. Did a "dry" run to make sure it all went back together ok. Then, using a toothpick, added a few drops of super glue to cure the underlying problem.

    lots of great images in this set. Funny this drops the same day Tony Northrup talks the f4 prime as the best M43 lens for nature photography - I would agree that having OIS, especially as you drop in the extender would be awesome here, of course if the prime could be 2.8 that would be cool too. This would be similar to the 70-210 I have for my Nikon FE (yes, I still like film at times...and old things) and I love zooms for convenience, it is going to your kids soccer game and being able to get the tight shot, the long shot, etc. with fewer lens swaps because I am not trying to look like the pro on the sidelines with 3 bodies slung around my neck.

Because it's slow-ish I use it mainly outdoors. Flowers, animals etc. are easy to capture with the focal range. It also works with the 4/3 EC-14 1.4x tele-conveter albeit increasing your maximum apeture.

The image quality is exceptional, as is the build quality. One thing I'd like to mention is that while it looks like a "big & heavy" lens - it is really not at all - especially compared to a 70-200 FF equivalent, It balances perfectly on my E-M1 MKII or E-M5 MK II (with grip). Great for wildlife, landscapes, race cars, portraits - and just about everything in between and yes - even flowers and flora. Just an excellent video, Peter! Please keep them coming! Sadly, in 2019, the Farnborough International people (who run the Farnborough International Airshow) announced there will be no more public airshows at Farnborough.
      Once, this was the greatest Airshow in the world, but the organisers have been trying to kill off the public show for many years now.

      Peter Forsgård I used only my old 4/3 lenses in the first 2 years on my em1m2 and I was pleased with the autofocus. Only one small negative experiance was that the lenses, 14-52 and 50-200, both 2.8-3.5 made some noise when changing the zoom (focus-noise I believe, but I#m not a specialist just a user). Technically no problem until today. But since I bought the 12-100 mft pro 4.0 there is of course no noise and I have a new working horse for almost everthing I do. I still hold the 2 FT‘s, the 50-200 for the zoo mainly and the 14-54 for low light familiy party fotos. I enjoy your videos, keep on doing this. Best regards from Germany. Volker

    I have gotten the 40-150 f:3.5-4.5 since I used to have my E-1 and E-5 FT cameras. I love it a lot, despite the front turning when focusing, not being wheater selling and obviously not being as fast as the Pro lenses at the moment (50-200 f:2.8 then; 40-150 f:2.8 now). Since I have switched from FT to MFT and I own a E-M1 Mk II I still use it with the MMF-2 adapter. I am aware that's not the pro gear I kinda should have, but I am going to keep using it at least till when I can afford the Pro lens :-)

    Hello Peter, greetings from Mo i Rana in northern Norway. Thanks for great content. Keep em coming. I have this lens and uses it with the OM-D E-M1II. I have had some different systems. Canon, Nikon, Pentax medium format, and have gone over to Olympus a while ago. I am very satisfied. Before i changed, when i went out to shoot i had two different systems with me. Even had the Canon 400 2,8. Most of the time it stayed home though :-D In the end i thought no, this is enough now. The weight took the fun away from me. Now i travel light, and i am very satisfied.

    Good review! I rented this with a matched Teleconverter for a trip into Sangre de Cristo mountains to be used on my Pen-f; I had to try it! Outstanding colors & sharpness; AF to MF flow was amazing! On a tripod, easy, but too big for the Pen-f handholding for constant use. IBIS worked great! This lens would be great on a MX or EM1! I really liked the lens bundle and it worked perfectly...but not well balanced on small bodies. Your squirrels and church area shots were excellent! Thanks for sharing!

      I agree! It’s doable and the results are excellent! Fwiw, the 40~150mm f/4 lens is a gem on the Pen sized bodies, and is on sale now for $99US! At less than 8 oz weight, it balances beautifully in palm of the hand, too! I can envision needing & using both lenses, depending on the circumstance...until Santa delivers an EM1. 🙂

The design of the original hood although really convenient, is flimsy and the ball bearing slide system can not bear the weight of the lens when in the bottom of a camera bag.

    Hi Peter,
    I'm a professional photographer in the UK. When I'm not using Olympus prime lenses for a pre-planned "poor light" or client commissioned shoot, I'll always take Olympus's f/2.8 40-150 PRO + the 7-14 PRO lenses along. They are superb.
    My only caveat is that you're losing much of M43's super lightweight and size portability, but it's the weather sealing that usually swings the argument.
    For enthusiasts, I'd say only buy the PRO lenses if you need the weather sealing. The smaller and lighter M43 lenses mean you're more likely to have the right lens for that "unmissable" shot, when it's needed.
    Only us PRO photographers are daft enough to always carry big and bulky lenses. After all, the most important thing is capturing that shot, and not whether it's technically good enough to sell to National Geographic magazine. An exciting imperfect image is worth ten technically perfect, yet boring images.
    Speaking of Aviation Photography. I live 5 minutes from Farnborough and, as well as Extreme Expectations Photography, Aviation Photography is my thing. Anyone thinking of buying the 40-150 PRO zoom, or the 300mm PRO f/4 for photographing aircraft (or birds), I'd recommend also looking at Olympus's red dot sight. Peter has a video on that, so I'll let him do the explaining on the red dot. Just remember to turn off IBIS for images where the aircraft is flying diagonally, fast up and over you.
    Rick in the UK

    I think micro 4/3 needs another fast aperture zoom telephoto lens. Something like the Panasonic Leica 10-25 f1.7. If OM digital or Panasonic can come up with a 70-150mm F1.7 lens, then M43 can finally shoot indoor sports because at the moment those fast 2.8 zoom just isn’t good enough for dimly lighted gyms.

    Today, I used it (with the extender - bought together) and took some shots outside a window. There was a little flower I wanted to capture in the late, afternoon light. I didn't realise that I still had bracketing set up so it worked a treat. That was with an OEM 1 Mk 11. However, I recently tried it out on my OEM 10 Mk 11 on which I had a full spectrum conversion done as soon as I bought it. I'm looking forward to processing my infrared shots taken with it. Love Olympus!

    I have a real desire to own this lens, even though I've never even handled one in real life. I'm in the process of talking myself into spending the $1000 USD they seem to command on the used market. Why do I want it? Largely because of how much I enjoy owning and using the 12-40mm f2.8 Pro zoom, which I got used at an excellent price. I think it would be cool to own its big brother. I don't actually think I would need any other lenses for my Olympus kit. And there is another reason. I own the 40-150mm f4-5.6 Olympus zoom, and have gotten excellent results from this little $100 lens. I can only imagine that I'd love the Pro version even more.
    Back when I shot a lot with my Nikon gear, I used an 80-200 f2.8 quite a lot, and a 70-210 f4 as well, for when I wanted to be a bit more mobile. I was surprised a how much I used the smaller of the two zooms, and since the Olympus is about the same size and weight of that 70-210, I'm sure I'd love it. Maybe I'll get myself one for my 65th birthday. I see there is an f4 version available for pre-order which might be worth a look as well.

  • @godofhope
