    Thanks for the reminder of why I haven’t considered this lens up to now-no IS. It seems like a glaring omission on an 80-300mm equivalent lens that retails for $1500.

    I have this lens since November 15 last year, when I bought it together with the OM-D E-M1 MII, the 12-40mm F2.8 Pro and the 1.4x teleconverter. And quite recently I have added to the OM-D E-M1 MIII to my gear. I have used this lens on the E-M1 MII and MIII for concert shoots (also one wedding (which I usually never shoot) and a some landscapes with a model) and I just love this lens. Just like you said, quick AF, really sharp and it feels just so solid and smooth to operate. Really just a great lens. And to me it doesn't really matter that it was designed in 2014, it does a great job and that's what counts. :)

    The lens hood was designed to break easily to absorb the impact in case of accidental knocks or falls. That way, the lens (glass) and the camera will be protected, while sacrificing the hood. This technique will only work, if the plastic of the hood is fragile enough. If it is too rigid, the impact will be transferred to the lens and camera = which will result in more damage.
    I will be shooting with this lens tomorrow! Can't wait.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  3 года назад +4

      When I look at the parts, it really looks like a fragile design and not for professional use. There must be a better way to design a shock absorbing hood. So that it absorbs, but does not brake. Besides, I have not used my lens as a hammer😀

    • @veikop
      @veikop 3 года назад

      Same with a lensmount. It might fail from knee height drops and was kind of safety feature for me. Still using as a tool. Flipping and throwing, aiming and shooting! :)

    • @marklaurendet1861
      @marklaurendet1861 3 года назад +2

      If that is the case I wish they had priced the replacement as a consumable. But me thinks it is part bad design as the 12-100 hood looks better and a number of reviewers have commented the the new 100-400 has a better designed hood as well. I remember the 12-40 mount used to break on early versions as well.

    • @fellowcitizen

      It's a fun design which feels like a scene from the A-Team or Ash in the Evil Dead, but the mechanism to allow this slick manoeuvre is fragile as a result

    I use this lens a lot on my G9, often with the teleconverter. I didn’t use it much in the beginning because I felt it was too big and heavy. But the I used it for event fotography and must say, it‘s an absolute beauty.

  • @agrafernando
    @agrafernando 3 года назад +2

    This beauty is mounted a lot on my G9. I use a battery grip and with that the balance is perfect for me. Mf clutch and constant aperture is awesome. G9 IBIS is good enough for me with the Oly. With the TC 1.4 it's a cool combo for local wildlife. The PL 35-100 and the 50-200 are the contenders. Dual IS , smaller are size are in favour of Pana. I went for the Oly because I wanted more than 100mm and constant f 2.8.

    I used this for several months on EM1 II. They were a great fit. I mostly agree with the Pros and Cons, mentioned in the video. But in my experience, the lack of lens IS was not such a problem, maybe because the EM1 II has a very good IBIS system. What I would put in the list of downsides is ugly bokeh. Not every time, but if the background is not far enough or is more complex, it can be busy and distracting. Other than that - my lens hood was in mint condition, because the lens does not flare a lot and I removed it from day one. I also removed the tripod foot, which made it a bit smaller. In terms of sharpness, though - it really shines. Just a good optical design, apparently. It was resolving a lot of detail and when looking at the pictures, I often couldn't believe that's coming from a 20MP camera.

  • @bradleyweghorst9473
    @bradleyweghorst9473 3 года назад +3

    Nice discussion and review. There is nothing small or light about this lens (within the mft system) but it has become my favorite over time- it would be the last lens in the bag I give up. I've been using it on a GX85 for the last year or so and it's great on a tripod but a bit unstable hand-held. The quality of the lens and the images it can produce is quite excellent.

    • @mattisulanto

    I've heard several complaints about the lens hood on the 40-150mm pro lens. I bought this lens a few years ago and while out shooting I tripped and fell, the lens hood saved the glass. I always use the hood just in case of accidents. This lens is expensive and must be protected.

      @@mattisulanto Yes. I understand. I am dealing with whether this is a "want" or need, since I have other cameras and lenses that will cover this range. I‘m not a fan of the Olympus Pro lenses. They are excellent in quality but far too big. I use mft because of the small size and weight factor. Otherwise I would stick to full frame. The Lumix Leica lineup for example is much smaller in size and still offers excellent quality. That‘s the way to go. Another no go of Olympus lenses is the fact that they often come with no lens hood. You have to buy them separately. That‘s also different with Lumix lenses.
