"Enne Naadu Kadathatte" is a classic Syrian hymn of the 5th Century recalling the faith of John Chrysostom, the Archbishop of Constantinople who lived between 347 and 407 AD. It was transliterated into Malayalam by the late theologian and poet C. P Chandy. Viju Jeremiah Traven rendered it in Malayalam, Tamil, English, and Hindi. Traven wrote and composed a chorus with Syrian and Hebrew words praising the Triune God Almighty. The song calls listeners to spiritual awakening, repentance, and a deeper intimacy with God. John Chrysostom encountered numerous toils and was orphaned at a young age. His mother instilled a deep Christian faith in him. He adopted an austere lifestyle renouncing wealth and status. He remained steadfast in following Christ and continued to preach, write, and advocate for the poor and marginalized. His legacy as a champion of orthodoxy, reform, and compassion has endured for centuries. As a prominent Christian leader, he persisted in persecution, especially during the reign of Roman Emperor Theodosius I. He also suffered antagonism from rival bishops and clergy, who resented his reforms and uncompromising moral standards. Chrysostom raised his voice against monarchal attempts to control the Church, leading to conflicts with Emperor Arcadius and Empress Eudoxia. As a result, he was exiled three times for fearlessly denouncing royal luxury and corrupt practices. The first exile was in 403 AD, banished to Nicaea for criticizing Empress Eudoxia's extravagance. The second exile was in 406 AD, which led to Cucusus in Armenia for opposing imperial interference in Church affairs. The third exile (407 AD) was to Pityus on the Black Sea, and Chrysostom was forced to march on foot to his destination. The journey was grueling, and was subjected to harsh conditions. Physical exhaustion, hunger and thirst, exposure to extreme weather, and Ill-treatment by guards caused his health to deteriorate severely. Chrysostom became too weak to continue his journey. After that, he celebrated the Divine Liturgy, received Holy Communion, and finished well on September 14, 407 AD. The last words of this very devoted Bishop, known as the golden mouth, were, "Glory be to God for all things!" The early Christian Church saw John Chrysostom's death as a martyrdom. His relics were eventually transferred to Constantinople and placed in the Church of the Apostles, where they remained until the Fourth Crusade in 1204 AD. In honor of John Chrysostom's unwavering faith in God, may this musical masterpiece inspire generations to follow Christ enduringly! Blessings Rev. Dr. J.W.
