I remember it like it was yesterday. I was at my parents house, all alone. On the back stretch, both horses side by side, Secretarial made his move, suddenly I stood up, I have no idea why. As he moved away from Sham, it was as if Sham was not moving. Secretariat looked Sham in the eye and said “let’s race”!Then off he went. As they entered the last turn, moving like a “tremendous machine”, for some reason I began to cry. I was in absolute awe! Witnessing absolute perfection as no other athlete had ever risen to the occasion. No words can quite capture what my feelings were at that moment. Nothing I had ever seen before or since equals that moment. Thank the Lord I saw this happen in real time. To this day I can’t watch that race and not cry. And I’m not a cryer. Magnificence utter magnificence
Myself as well ! I saw the race and STILL cry every time I watch this ! He was a God given treasure.. Thank you Secretariat for making us all so happy for you !!
I totally agree with your words "No words can quite capture what my feelings were at that moment. Nothing I had ever seen before or since equals that moment." I wish there words to express it with justice.
Sir what we saw that day was absolutely perfection!!!! I also was at my parents house at the time as a young man and did the same thing stood up and yell for Big Red!!
Secretariat, God's gift of perfection. He was not just a gift of beauty, but also intelligence, strength, speed, & personality. He captured our hearts & continues to do so. THIS is greatness. THIS is Legend.
Secretariat is to horse racing just like what Babe Ruth is to baseball and Michael Jordan is to basketball....He was one of a kind and remember the records he set in 1973 are still the fastest times that no other thoroughbred have even come close to beating.
I was nine years old and at a barbeque at my grandparents house, when the race happened. Everybody, including all of us kids, sat down to watch the race, and even though I couldn't full grasp how special a moment we witnessed, I was amazed a horse could run like that. Other than watching President Reagan give his speech at Omaha Beach for the 40 anniversary of the D Day invasion, this is still one of my favorite moments. I'm a lucky man!
I think Secretariat knew he could win every time if he wanted to! He loved to come from behind then pour on that God given speed and show the world how he was a gift from God, blessed to fly with that special God given heart! Secretariat....in our hearts forever! 💕
He liked to see what he was up against!! I fully agree with you on most of what you said, but his jockey Ronnie T said he was always on for the ride and that Secretariat knew exactly what was going on when he was running on the track...all around him he was a smart horse....
Such perfection and I understand he was a nice hose. A gift from god.. a wonder of the world. I am loving watching him, and I saw him at the 73 Belmont and I just cried and cried and cried.
I get that same feeling hearing the call of Affirmed and Alydar at the Kentucky Derby by the great C. Anderson....."and down the stretch they come" neck and neck
I always cry when they are in the stretch because, I get emotional when the jockey is hitting the horse with his whip & the horse is giving all it has to try to win.😥😥
@@wilmothutson1140 Turcotte did NOT use the whip on Secretariat. He only gave him words on encouragement and held on for the ride of his life. Secretariat made up his own mind to show all the other horses who was the best.
Sham was great compared to a normal horse, but he was like a normal horse compared to Secretariat. You can see the moment when Secretariat decides to leave Sham behind. It's as if he was thinking: "Enough playing! Let's race!". But no one could race like Secretariat, he was one of a kind and his records still stand, over 50 years later! 💖🏇🏼
My parents always had Triple Crown parties every year….when everyone put a few bucks in the pot. Wow we picked the winning horse got the money. When I was old enough to participate I picked Secretariat as my horse and all the others laughed at me…saying he wasn’t good enough to win. I won 25 bucks for the Derby and 20 dollars each for the Preakness and Belmont. He was a tremendous machine!
I don’t know why they laughed at you , they must have been ignorant to horse racing . Secretariat the year before as a two year old, was named Horse of The Year, a distinction that rarely ever occurs .
@@robertlosasso4222 I was young and they thought they knew more about horse racing than me. They actually thought I was cute betting on Big Red. I just had a feeling about him!

Just saw Secretariat, the movie in 2023. I saw the races in 1973, for the Triple crown and could not believe he won by 36 lengths. It wS announced as 31 but was changed to 36. The movie is so special. He stood and walked within seconds of being born. They knew he'd be a sensation and he was. I'm 73 now, so it was 50 years ago.
When you watch his utter magnificence, you are catching a glimpse of what the Glory of God looks like, and you cant help but cry in such Presence. Theres only One God, and One horse that can represent the Almighty! Amen!
I saw him running laps when we went to "Breakfast at Belmont". He is such a beautiful horse. I watched as each of his muscles moved thru each turn. I'm a soccer and rugby player, this horse is an athlete and he is going to win. He represents all of us
I was a kid watching this and to this day this horse and race still gives me chills, as he looks Sham side eyed and say bye bye Big Red hits another gear and all the jockey can do is hold on and enjoy the moment that will forever be the race of a lifetime
I was a teenaged girl and I watched for the first and only time in my life the race when he won the triple crown I remember jumping and clapping my hands knowing that I had just seen something amazing!
It will soon be 50 years when on 6/9/73 Secretariat achieved greatness by winning the Triple Crown. I've maintained for years I have and probably never will see another horse like him EVER. He wasn't just a great horse. but one of the greatest athletes of all time. I feel it's only fitting to say Sham deserves to be in Horse Racing HOF with him. Without Secretariat in the race Sham would have not only won the Derby and Preakness, but set record times himself. As a pair these two horses were the Affirmed/Alydar and Sunday Silence/Easy Goer's of their time. They should be together in the history books forever.
Affirmed and Seattle Slew were GREAT horses!! but in my opinion Sham could have beat them both...His time (2nd fastest) in Kentucky Derby records prove it!!
Agreed, both of them had exceptional pedigree, in fact sharing their bloodlines. Sham got going in CA and won 4 in a row and he should’ve won the Wood but waited too long to overtake Angle Light. He had it all, iron will, heart, speed, intelligence. He and Sec just intersected in time, maybe it was destiny.
@@Psyfi85 It was interesting in the Wood Memorial race. The strategy of Sham’s people was to have him wait on going to the lead until Secretariat began his usual big rush. Then they’d duel it out. By focusing only on where “the big horse” was, Sham lost out to Angle Light. Lesson learned! But major props to Angle Light for running a terrific race. Very awkward outcome though for Lucien Lauren, as the Trainer of both Secretariat & Angle Light 😬
I love Secretariat, and watched all of his races on TV. I really wished that I could have seen Man of War. No other horse since these two ever got my attention.

Hat’s off to that amazing horse as well. But there will truly never be another horse like Secretariat. If there is, I hope I live to see it. ❤
They were directly related and it showed in Shams ability, heart (18 lbs), and his iron will. Sham was flying high before Sec, had won at SA with ease, and in the Wood no doubt he overtakes Angle Light had he not been waiting for Sec to come on. Sham will always be my black stallion, a glorious colt in his own right.
@@Psyfi85 The only reason Sham ever placed ahead of Secretariat was because of the abcess that Secretariat had the prevented him from eating (race horses running 1 1/2 - 1 3/4 miles) need to eat!! that is the only reason Sham places ahead of him in the Wood. Sham was a great horse but never beat a healthy Secretariat...
It's been said more than once the timing is everything and it was bad timing for Sham. Secretariat was a beast, no pun intended, he was a Corvette among chevettes. Yes I'm old enough to remember the chevette as well as all the races that Secretariat won. so many grest horses before and after secretariat specially seabiscuit and some undefeated race horse but i never seen a horselike secretariate who starts slow but ended up winning..secretariat really a thorough breed winner..he really show his original bloodline way of running...i called secretariat as the greatest, the best and the only god horse because of his race style..
I always wondered how fast would he have gone without Turcotte on him or did he need Ron to encourage him to go fast. If I ever met Jerry Bailey or Gary Stevens, i would ask them that.
Running the final quarter of the KD in 23 flat while significantly wide in the turn, bearing out even wider after the turn and hav8ng to bear in while adjusting closer to Sham and as a baby 3 YO first time at 10 furlongs should give an appreciation for his speed. When you add to that that he did not shorten his stride and ran "through" the finish, he was simply the best 3 YO to have ever run.
At that time of my life I was really in love with TB racing. I had an uncle that was a trainer so got to get it in my blood at an early age. I remember watching the Belmont in awe. Sitting beside my Uncle who kept scooching closer and closer to the tv as the race progressed. We knew we witnessed history. My Uncle Herschel is gone now and I am an old guy, but that day will be with me forever.
There are a couple of comments I would like to make if I may..? My family and I, were involved in both racing and breeding, for a decade or so during the 1980's in Africa. One important point I would like to make is that thankfully with Penny Chenery Tweedie, Lucien Laurin, Ron Turcotte and "Big Red's" long term groom, he had a team that were able to recognise and appreciate the horse's unique abilities. Sadly there are a number of trainers who having had some success, will develop a routine that all are expected to follow, rather than recognise an animal's specialised needs and capabilities. This alarmingly, can ruin a potential champion, so "hat's off" to all who allowed "Big Red" to flourish. My second point is that one can have the most perfectly proportioned animal with the most impeccable pedigree, but lacking that indefinable essential, which in the racing world, we call "Heart"..!! In such cases, all one has really is a "Pretty Horse". Race Horse Owner, His Highness Maktoum al Maktoum's thoroughbred " SNAAFI DANCER" is such a celebrated case. Despite being full brother to English Derby Winner "Sharif Dancer" and looking like perfection "SNAAFI" had No Ability and No Inclination to even try..! But it is not so much to do with the size of the organ, though in "SECRETARIAT'S" case, that undoubtedly helped. I am referring to that essential, but sadly often missing ingredient, the sheer, relentless determination to win at all/any cost, and in the legendary "SECRETARIAT'S" case to do so, so convincingly.!
I said back then (as someone who has horses) they should have retired him after the Triple Crown. Instead, they put him into some more races. The horse's heart was strong but his hooves were normal and they were torn up by the severe running he did.
Diane Lane, you are such a favorite of mine, I all your movies. However, secretariat, has always been my favorite you've done! ( and under a Tuscan sun) 😆 ❤❤❤
Sham was fairly close to Secretariat in the Belmont. I think it was somewhere around a 33 length lead that Secretariat hammered out against the competition in that race. If I'm correct sham finish very last in that race. I believe he did try with everything he had but he had no gas in the tank to finish well at all.
Horse racing as a religious experience? Actress Diane Lane (her best role?) played Penny Chenery - beloved owner of a horse voted among the “Top 50 Athletes of the 20th Century.” Honorable mention goes to John Malkovich for his endearing performance as jockey Ronnie Turcotte still with us (5/5/2024) living in New Brunswick Canada, age 82. Mr. Turcotte was as astonished as anyone, when Secretariat finished the Belmont Stakes 31 lengths (some estimates as high as 36!) ahead of second-place “Sham.” I love superlatives, in all sports, don't you? Especially one about the “greatest horse" -- by a country mile! Thanks for sharing Dick Owsiany.

I was 10 watching these races. Records are always broken, but it's going to take some special horse to beat the Belmont time especially. He seemed to run effortlessly, it was beautiful.
I was born and raised on our family’s Horse farm in Kentucky, Christian county Kentucky to be exact it was ironic that I got drafted into the Army, and my unit Was the 327 th Infantry 0f the 101 airborne division based out of my hometown. We took care of several hi dollar race horses and quarter horses other people from out of town. All of the trainers and other personnel did the work the training we were responsible for keeping it beautiful and constantly hiring greens people I’m just making it generally A place nicer than most of us lived. My life was perfect and I love Kentucky it is so green and rolling and so much to do. I had a horse given to me when I was 14 years old! Impeccable bloodlines but he was a bit of a runt! Pure Arabian and absolutely gorgeous. They were going to have it put down! rather than pay the $3000 monthly upkeep and I told them just please let me have it and it was a handshake some paperwork and I had a nice friend! 7 years later I was a grunt in Vietnam, with both legs blown off above the knee. Stepped on a Russian land mine! Actually, the guy in front of me did! A bouncing Betty ! The nightmare! Divorce maker , JODYS BINGO, A little bit more and you go home with no JUNK! And look like a 1/2 man. We maintain a strict 5 meter distance while on patrol . This is a reason why! All of the land mines and other explosive ordinance they use against stuff is made out of American ordinance they get their hands on or Chinese Russian ordinance imported from China or Russia. I was put together by a medic from Puerto Rico, after that they flew me to the main combat hospital Da Nang! After I was in surgery for I don’t know how long they flew me and probably 70 or 80 other combat wounded to the giant receiving hospital at the US Navy base in the Philippines. I’ve never had morphine and I kept throwing up it’s really terrible it numbs your whole body I kept watching this guy across from me he kept turning gray and they had some machines on him to monitor him and four different bags of blood and from clear I.V. I kept complaining because the pain was too much to bear but I felt the aircraft land hard and I woke up and when I looked over at that guy there was an American flag raping him so I assume he’s dead. They took me to The army hospital at San Antonio Texas I stayed there for nine months and learned how to Transfer. When I got home my trusty steed had add long forgotten me and that broke my heart.

Charlie Davis talked about Big Red gliding “Like a plane taking off the ground.” ❤
He gives me chills every timei see this
There will never EVER he another horse like Secretariat, at least in my lifetime.
Be still my beating heart! What a beautiful animal! I fell in love with horse racing because of big Red!
I can watch those races over and over again such a good looking horse
SECRETARIAT WAS THE GREATEST ATHLETE THAT HAS EVER LIVED! END OF STORY!!
Greatest athlete ever ❤❤🎉🎉
so many grest horses before and after secretariat specially seabiscuit and some undefeated race horse but i never seen a horselike secretariate who starts slow but ended up winning..secretariat really a thorough breed winner..he really show his original bloodline way of running...i called secretariat as the greatest, the best and the only god horse because of his race style..
Check out Zenyatta if you like going from last to first, she did it too
I always wondered how fast would he have gone without Turcotte on him or did he need Ron to encourage him to go fast.
Gives me goose bumps.
What a magnificent, beautiful animal and there is a mystique about him that no other horse has.
The best athlete of all time......Big Red.
BIG RED is the greatest horse of all time
Phar lar was big red also
The Belmont Stakes was his miracle. Greatest athletic achievement in history.
He ran on the outside, playing with the other horses ❤
I. Agree. I'm a. Huge. Fan
We. Think alike
Secretariat was a special horse that will be not match by no other race horse. He was one of kind.
❤❤❤no other horse will ever come close to Big Red. Super horse of all time.❤❤❤❤
Every time I watch his races I cry from joy of watching him run,
The power of God was with that horse on that race.
The most thrilling race in the history of the Universe. Brings tears.
If Secretariat hadn't been there, it would probably have been Sham who was so famous. That horse was great to, for getting so close by Big Red ...
Sham was fairly close to Secretariat in the Belmont. I think it was somewhere around a 33 length lead that Secretariat hammered out against the competition in that race. If I'm correct sham finish very last in that race. I believe he did try with everything he had but he had no gas in the tank to finish well at all.
My mistake cam was close to Secretariat in the Kentucky Derby, not in the Belmont.
Greatest horse of all time ❤️❤️
Greatest horse ever! Penny is a legend too!
The greatest horse to ever live - Secretariat!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
The best ❤
8:10 watch Sham vs Secretariat’s strides. Secretariats stride is so full his leading leg is invisible above the bars.
Horse racing as a religious experience?
Actress Diane Lane (her best role?) played Penny Chenery - beloved owner of a horse voted among the “Top 50 Athletes of the 20th Century.”
Honorable mention goes to John Malkovich for his endearing performance as jockey Ronnie Turcotte still with us (5/5/2024) living in New Brunswick Canada, age 82. Mr. Turcotte was as astonished as anyone, when Secretariat finished the Belmont Stakes 31 lengths (some estimates as high as 36!) ahead of second-place “Sham.”
I love superlatives, in all sports, don't you? Especially one about the “greatest horse" -- by a country mile!
Thanks for sharing Dick Owsiany.
The Greatest Athlete of All Time!
Diane was terrifically beautiful in this movie. Secretariat stands neck and neck with King Kong.😎👍
i forget who said it but "he was the way God intended to make a horse"
Secretariat could run like the wind! How ronnie turcotte held on, ill never know. It had to be thrilling for ronnie to be on that horse.
Greatest ever!!
And I think , we will never see
Another Athletic Champion Horse

Was Real, he really existed, ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Sounds like Seabiscuit! Love them both!
Secretaries was breathtaking sham was a great horse. But secretaraite was better.
I love you Diane Lane
I have watched the movie maybe 20 times or more. It is always special to watch
I was 10 watching these races. Records are always broken, but it's going to take some special horse to beat the Belmont time especially. He seemed to run effortlessly, it was beautiful.
Sham born at the wrong time
**MY FAVORITE RACEHORSE EVER!!!**
One has to feel for Sham.. any other time he would have been the horse to beat..
Truly magnificent
❤ Will to Win is everything!!
Ferrari wanted to use Secretariat as the horse logo on their cars, but Secretariat didnt want to be associated with something slower than him.
Also not American born and definitely not as handsome as he was.
Love that movie!....
I. Love. That. Actress. She. Is. Hot
I didn’t think it was very good .
I’m not crying.
He got that huge heart from way back
This is great thank you
I miss him even today as if he would be trotting right by my path............
To have a heart almost double the size of any other racehorse, there should be asterisks to his records. Beyond Secretariat, who's the greatest normal racehorse of all time?
ruffian was also another great horse she was the best running girl horse she should have been in races longer
Diane Lane , gust about perfect !
Greatest All Around horse
