Eddie Sweat was with Secretariat more than any other human. They had a bond of total love for each other. Sadly, Eddie deserved greatly more recognition than he ever got.
I've been looking for a tribute to Eddie for awhile. He deserved this because of his exceptional relationship to horses especially Secretariat. RIP Eddie. Job was well done.
He was by far the luckiest man on earth with the most famous horse in the world. God blessed him for a reason to be the caretaker for this incredible horse .
I am thrilled to see this tribute. Eddie was beside him every stride in spirit til the very last. I pray they cure laminitis one day. AND leukemia. It took my husband too at 48. You go, Mr. Sweat.
My daughter's an equestrian, and from what we've learned from our most trusted horse people; there's no greater bonding you can do with a horse than to groom them. If your horse experience starts and ends at the mounting block, you may become a great rider, but you'll never be a HORSEMAN. Eddie Sweat was THE horseman.
I once read that after Riva Ridge had been retired to stud, Eddie paid him a visit. Riva was so happy to see his old pal Eddie he almost fell over in his desire to see him again. That tells you all you need to know about the relationship Eddie had with horses and horses with him.
About time they gave Eddie the real credit for Secretariat. All the others saw Secretariat as a product, a money machine but Eddie saw him as a living loving creature of God.
Grooms in ALL forms of horse sporting events be it racing or showing are the most unappreciated and under paid people in the business. If Eddie Sweat had gone with Secretariat, his care would have probably given the horse another 5 or 10 years. Eddie was super attentive to every detail. The foot problems wouldn’t have advanced until the horse called attention to the problem.
Sweat was offered a job at Claiborne Farms when Secretariat went to stud there, but turned it down. I'm not sure why. Grooms, being low on the horse-racing business ladder, of course don't get the respect they deserve. Sweat, by all accounts, was outstanding at what he did.
I think that you are correct that Eddie loved the present situation so much that he stayed. I couldn’t have done that. I had a horse that was my best friend for her whole life. After the first month of riding her, I never used a saddle or bridle. If you would like to hear a few stories, please let me know. I have no idea if this is “private” or not…

I have had a wonderful race track career. The bond is genuine. Once when I was working for Joe Aqilino (rip) a horse that I had just started taking care of saw me walk into the barn and started nickering. The assistant trainer asked me if I had been giving him candy. (Peppermints) . I told him no, I never did that. My friend said that horse was happy to see me. That horse had 16 straight starts before I got him without having finished in the top four . First time I ran him he finished second at 54-1 odds . Second time he won paying 16$ next time second again and got claimed .

Early 80's, my 4 daughters, and I, were honored to see Secretariat "up close and personal" a few times. I grew up around horses and Secretariat was the most gorgeous horse that I had ever seen. He really liked my 4 daughters. Me, not so much. He was friendly but he cared more for my daughters. Most horses prefer young girls anyway.
The greatest horse that ever lived as we know you must have great owners. you must have a person that actually loves what he'sdoing Mr.Eddie Sweat, Secretariat Big Red love Eddie❤ yes and it show.Into The history books . Secretary, and Eddie, they actually goes together rest in peace to the both of U, U,💎💎
I read a couple of articles about Eddie. Seems he died broke and the family couldn't pay for the funeral. The Jockey Club Foundation paid for it. However what I find appalling that neither Roger or Penny Chenery went to the funeral or sent one flower. Bill Nack who got so much access to Secretariat through his friendship with Eddie did not attend his funeral, send flowers or write a article. It says alot of how some people are invaluable and then expendable.
Yes, Eddie "Shorty" Sweat died totally broke and he had several health problems for several years before his death. Eddie didn't care much about money and fame but deeply cared about caring for horses. He once stated that Secretariat was the best friend that he ever had.
Bill Nack did mention Eddie several years later in a SI article. As I understand it, Eddie's funeral was a family members only situation which is what Eddie wanted.
Heartbroken at that disclosure! They should've been the ones who paid for the funeral. He took care of their greatest assets and seems he was bypassed on their way to the bank! Shame! That's the south for you.
Just try to imagine the joy of seeing two of your charges win 5 of the 6 Triple Crown races in two consecutive years. The only sad part was that the two people who admired him and depended on his skill and devotion the most, Mr. & Mrs. Chenery, didn't live long enough to share it with him.
Penny died many years after Eddie. She simply didn't share with him as she should have. That's the really sad part. That man kept Secretariat with a cool head and a kind spirit. He could have been a wild mean horse being that he was so full of himself but you see him deferring to Eddie when Eddie was there, out if respect and love for Eddie. Eddie was his true owner, though not legally. Eddie was his world. The only time Big Red was without Eddie was when he was on the track. Secretariat was secure because of Eddie's impeccable care and devotion. I shudder to think what he could have been like without it, knowing how much I tensity that horse had flowing through him due to the size of his heart. He so easily could have become irascible and discontent. So kudos to you Mr. Sweat. I'm glad you're with our boy now and hope you get to ride him too! 💜💜💜
not at all crazy eddie. its what it is and what will ever be.. If you talk to they they listen. only problem is humans forget to listen back. they will tell you a story.
Racing does have a dark side. Majority of time a human is involved, it's usually not for the best. Eddie was an exception rather than the norm. Sad fact.
No horse that ever lived would have beat secretariat in the Belmont. Horses usually come within 2 seconds of his record time but 2 seconds is a lot in horse racing or any kind of racing for that matter.
God bless you Eddie for your love, care, kindness, and compassion you have given so many horses(Secretariat) over your years as their groom. Thank you 🙏🏼❤️❤️❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼😇😇😇😇❤️❤️❤️ I know your in heaven watching over and caring for all the great champions and legends❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Happy Birthday!!!!
It has always annoyed me that Eddie was not allowed to lead Secretariat into the winners circle after the Belmont Stakes. It would have been a fitting tribute for he had as much to do for the success of Big Red as anyone.
Halls Juju, keepers didn't/don't sit in the stands. They must be near the track if needed and must be there at the end of the race. Think about it, who is the person that a horse usually trusts the most? Eddie Sweat had been with Secretariat since birth.
They were brought together for a reason...I don’t Big Red..a.k.a. SECRETARIAT would have been SECRETARIAT without Eddie....that’s what’s called God’s divine intervention!!!❤️🙏😘🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎❤️
Mr Sweat was such a huge part of the Big Red machine. While I’m sure Secretariat was well cared for @ Claiborne I wonder how often he thought about & missed Eddie.
I have thought about that, too! I inquired at Claiborne Farms if Eddie ever visited Secretariat in retirement. The person who answered my question said not to his knowledge. That made me sad.
@@trishhennessey3584 If you can read Secretariat by Ray Wolfe Jr. There is a photo of Mr Sweat taken the day he had to leave the horse @ Claiborne. Mr. Sweat is wiping a tear from his face. In fact there are many wonderful pics in the book. That 1 really gets me. Like he knew he wouldn’t see his horse again.
I've seen that picture, too. It was so, so sad! I have wondered why Eddie chose not to stay at Claiborne Farms as the groomer to Riva Ridge and Secretariat. I have read that the staff at Claiborne Farms offered him a job after they retired and he turned it down. Another really sad story is Man o war with his groomer. Man O'War passed away after his groomer died. Everyone said he died of a broken heart.
@@trishhennessey3584 Eddie in interview in the early 1990s, talked about visiting Secretariat in 1986. He spoke about making his Donald Duck type voice, that he would speak to the horse in. Secretariat immediately looked up and came towards him, and Eddie spoke about the Belmont and the 31 Lengths, and Secretariat moved his head up and down. Pretty dramatic. So he did see him

Secretary, and Eddie, they actually goes together rest in peace to the both of U, U,💎💎
Thank you Eddie…🤗
My Aunt Penny DID pay and attend EDDIE'S funeral, as did all of our family.
Agree: Very disappointing to read that none of them attended his funeral.
Heartbroken at that disclosure! They should've been the ones who paid for the funeral. He took care of their greatest assets and seems he was bypassed on their way to the bank! Shame! That's the south for you.
Oh how blessed Eddie was...and he knew it....And he shared his gifts!
I hope he wasn’t overlooked but received a healthy wage for him and his family. He was a HUGH part of Reds life.
God rest his soul. I’m sure Eddie still enjoying his time with this magnificent horse .. both in heaven 🌹💕💕🐴
That's a lovely thought! I PRAY that it is so.
Trainer Ralph Ziadie said(( everyone around the horse is important, but the most important person is the groom)).
Makes sense.
So true.
not at all crazy eddie. its what it is and what will ever be.. If you talk to they they listen. only problem is humans forget to listen back. they will tell you a story.
You're right Eddie was the reason the they have a chapion in there hands love care and patient 😇
I worked with Eddie in the 80s he was asked what do u do after the big horse u look for another one he answered and smiles!
Happy belated birthday my brother ❤
Magnificent animal!! Eddie loved him dearly! And the feeling was mutual !
That was so beautiful! Thank you.💖
They will tell you a story...as all animals will!
Happy birthday 🎉
All readyyyyyyyy that's the truth one of the greatest horse trainers
Racing does have a dark side. Majority of time a human is involved, it's usually not for the best. Eddie was an exception rather than the norm. Sad fact.
Insightful author William Nack said something similar.
No horse that ever lived would have beat secretariat in the Belmont. Horses usually come within 2 seconds of his record time but 2 seconds is a lot in horse racing or any kind of racing for that matter.
I love that music
The living God is a poet! As well as as creator.
Ron leaned over and said something to Eddie. I think it had to do with him having to make a quick change for another ride.
Outstanding man.. thank you.....EW...
RUFFAIN E SECRETARIAT OS DOIS MAIORES CAVALOS DE CORRIDA DE TODOS TEMPOS
Real Blessings 🙏
I give credit when credit due he was there form the begining the middle and I say pary of the end
Fitting tribute to the man and horse!RIP!❤
Dang oh WOW, Eddie, Charlie, Big Red YOU ARE ALL IN HEAVEN
It bothers me that Eddie didn’t sit with the family at Belmont. But he was featured in the stands. Different times.
Halls Juju, keepers didn't/don't sit in the stands. They must be near the track if needed and must be there at the end of the race. Think about it, who is the person that a horse usually trusts the most? Eddie Sweat had been with Secretariat since birth.

Well said and Factually True as well.
He needed to be near the track so he could go get a hold on his horse as Big Red slowed down.
They were brought together for a reason...I don’t Big Red..a.k.a. SECRETARIAT would have been SECRETARIAT without Eddie....that’s what’s called God’s divine intervention!!!❤️🙏😘🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎❤️
Eddie loved Secretararit like a father. He knew him better than anyone. May our Lord bring him and Secrer
Hope when I get to Heaven, Eddie and Big Red will be there.
So he did see him
He was Eddie's World.. A father and son....I truly believe Penny, Eddie, and Ronnie are all together...Thank YOU ALL FOR THE UNFORGETTABLE MEMORIES..
WE LOVE AND MISS YOU ALL..❤
As I see Secretariat run around the paddock, he carry's his tale like an Arabian, is there any of that blood line in him and how far back does it go.
Awesome!!!!!!!
