It was a mystical confluence of supreme talent - Bill Nack's writing, and Secretariat's speed and endurance. I don't think anyyone else could have written so eloquently, lyrically, poetically about Secretariat's life and death.
Thank you so much telling the story of Big Red he will always be missed, you brought a few tears just talking about him, to me he was the best Racehorse that ever lived, he was a Legend,& I will always watch the clips of him in his 3 races, but to me the best one was Belmont stakes, RIP BIG RED💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
What a wonderful story and only Bill Nack could tell it so well. Secretariat was just amazing and he new it he really did. He was so beautiful inside and out. When I feel depressed I watch the Belmont race of 1973 Secretariat and I just smile That horse will never know just how many peoples lives he touched then and still is now Thank You Bill Nack and Secretariat so much both Rest In Peace your the greatest race horse that has ever lived and Bill yours is the best story.
I remember hearing of Secretariat's death. I wasn't a racing fan then, had no clue about the sport, but I remembered seeing Secretariat in Kentucky and in Baltimore and in New York. I grieved for him and I cried.
Everytime SECRETARIAT comes on I try to watch it, Have seen it dozens of times and plan to see it dozens more..! As 4 bill nack in the movie, the horse liked him... he was positive and good 4 the soul.
such a forthcoming and honest interview. i am glad he did not pretend to be just a great but indifferent writer. Nack's love for Secretariat is what makes his contribution to the horse's legacy so special. My prayers go out to him and his family. Secretariat was a transcendent figure for many of us...Secretariat was an antidote to the cynicism of the world and selfishness of the adults during my childhood. They said there was no Hope for the Good, the pure and sentimental. They were dead wrong.
Sad that Eddy Sweat didn't get any flowers or anyone at his funeral from the Chenery family, from Bill Neck who was his friend or Lucien Laurin the train or. Eddy was a horse whispered who died penniless and have the Jockey Club Foundation pay for his funeral.
I told my parents that we wont see a triple crown winner in our lifetime. Breeding is too exact and DNA plays a roll in it. I said we will just see some great horses win 2 of 3 but there wont be a triple crowner in our lifetime. Then later that year...in came American Pharoh
Big Red's genetics just skipped a generation of racehorses, but provided an opportunity of producers, especially within broodmares to provide great racehorses like Storm Cat and A.P. Indy as well as stallions.
I always wonder why this story gets me kind of emotional. I think it’s for the reason Bill said. It reminds me of being young and a better, simpler time. This world is so different now and appears to be rapidly going down the tube.
Strictly emotional. No logic. I can't have a conversation where someone ignores the facts & ignores the clock. Clocks don't have opinions. Based on 2day's times, MOW wasn't that fast. MANY horses had multiple wins. He raced when the competition wasn't great. Sec holds ALL 3 TC records & world record. MOW's records have all been beaten. Horses run the SAME races. Sec is unbeatable in his TIMES. MOW was great. Sec is the greatest in history. Secretariat was the miracle horse..God's perfect "10".
Yes there are many great horses before and after Secretariat, Ruffian, Zenyatta, Man O' War all undeniably great but let's be realistic here and let's look at the facts. Can any of those horses accomplishments in the sport really be compared to Secretariats? I don't believe they can. In his overall career Secretariat had set more records, and two which STILL stand to this day, 41 years later remain untouched. The margin of victory in the Belmont speaks for itself. Unlike most thoroughbreds, Secretariat's speed increased during his race while others decreased. Lest I not leave out the fact that many horsemen have also considered Secretariat the perfect horse.
Where have you been ? Secretariat does hold the Preakness record. Get your facts straight before you open your mouth.Secretariat set a record for each of the triple crown races. The belmont will probably never be broken LOOK IT UP!
If all of Man O' War's track records places him 10-24 lengths behind Secretariat, what makes him superior? The fact that he raced inferior horses? Secretariat is the greatest mortal that ever lived. His greatness & supernatural times & feats makes him greater than any man that ever lived. He was the GREAT one. No man ever had his perfection on every level. We will NEVER see his magic again.
Its not comparable. Different times, like a pro tennis player in the 60s or 70s playing one now. Different surfaces, equipment and training. Man o War was never extended. His owner was more cautious and didn't run him out or put him in the derby. It would be nice to see them race but we can see the challenge between secretariat and sham on film and sham rarely gets the attention he deserves because he didn't win any of the triple crown races. When they ran together in the belmont so far ahead for so long. Wow what a race!
Secretariat was not fat he was all muscle and his heart was more than twice the size of other horses. He was the perfect horse in size and ate what HIS body requirements. They cared for him like a child and love him the same!
I think "Sham" would have won the triple crown( If not for Secretariat). In the Belmont, the only reason he fell to last, was because he tried to keep up to Secretariat( He was lucky that didn't kill Sham),and he was done 3/4 of the way.
Part 1 Facts: The electronic timer got Sec at 1:55. Pimlico's official clocker immediately reported his own clocking of 1:54 2/5; two independent Daily Racing Form clockers caught Sec even faster, at 1:53 2/5. (All 3 men were racetack professionals, hardly just "fans" as you describe them elsewhere.) Acknowledging the electronic timer had malfunctioned, the track clocker's 1:54 2/5 (slower than Canonero II's 1970 Preakness) eventually was made the official time & stood for decades.
Pt 3 The decision last year to change the time was not machine vs. human clockers: it was machine vs. machine. For the details of the evidence presented to the MD Racing Commission, read Bill Doolittle's article "The Day Time Didn't Stand Still." Digital analysis of the 1973 footage showed Secretariat's time as 1 minute 53.14647981314646 seconds.
I love hearing you talk about Secretariat, and believe he was the greatest racehorse known. The reason his children, while often good racers, never matched him is simple. The offspring of all extraordinary biological beings inevitably tend to return to the mean of their species. A draft horse, for instance, is bred for strength rather than speed. His offspring will exhibit strength, not speed. Secretariat was bred for speed and certainly had it, but his children inevitably returned to the mean for race horses, not draft horses, with the usual variation of talented and untalented. Humans do the same thing. Albert Einstein was a good human example. He was one of the smartest people who ever lived. His son Hans Albert was a bright figure in engineering, had a Ph.D., and did significant work in his field of research. But he wasn't the genius his father was. Another Einstein offspring had serious mental/emotional problems. Those who expected Secretariat to reproduce himself were foolishly asking the impossible. The only way to get another Secretariat would be to attempt cloning. The assorted odd genes every living being carries will vanish or gradually become dominant depending on whether or not the trait contributes to survival. I feel blessed to have seen Secretariat on TV; watching his races was one of the most exciting events of my life. Thank you so much for telling these wonderful tales about him.
once in a lifetime you get to see something special in thoroughbred racing. secretariat was one of those special horses. there will never be another like him. i don't think you will see a triple winner for a long time to come
@screenings2001: I watch this series frequently and have never given part 3 a like, and I hope you can forgive that. I mean, who could like the segment about that *gorgeous* champion's TRAGIC suffering, you know?
Now hear here Bill- Alysheba & Easy Goer certainly were on par with Alydar. Alysheba was not a successful sire but Easy Goer was off to a tremendous sire til he died of a heart attack at 8yo.
AP Indy, lost one race, tossed a shoe, and ran third. Then he won the Belmont and the Classic. He had a mamma named Weekend Surprise. Hello, Secretariats daughter!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have never read anywhere that Lucien Lauren thought Ruffian was greater than Secretariat. I think a family member of his was Ruffian's trainer, but I might be wrong. Ruffian was a great filly. I was brokenhearted what happened to her. Same goes for Eight Belles and Barbaro. I read where there are 24 deaths per WEEK at race tracks across the country. That's shameful. More should be done to prevent accidents that cause the death of the horse/jockey.
Pt 2 In the days following, video provided by CBS repeatedly showed the '73 Preakness being run quicker (26 frames less) than in 1970. But videotape was a new technology then & not accepted as fully reliable, as it is today. In 2012 the Maryland Racing Commission unanimously changed Secretariat's official time to 1:53 FLAT, based on DIGITAL TAPES (unavailable in '70) VIDEO OVERLAY & expert testimony . Video technology is now routinely accepted as the final word in many sports.
No horse should ever get laminitis/founder. Especially these high worth horses. It was preventable. Never should’ve happened. As we said on the track…”no foot, no horse”.
Yes, but it still doesn't address the fact that all Secretariat's times on every length track in the country is an average of 2 seconds faster than Man O War's. And no horse ever has or ever will even come close to the record Secretariat set in the 1973 Belmont. Even if Man O War started from a rope, it wouldn't make that much difference in time. It might even give Man O War an edge. There have been many great race horses, but in many people's eyes, Secretariat was the greatest.
The one person who is not talked about his his breeder Mr. Chennery who in two years won 5 of the 6 Triple Crown races with Riva Ridge and of course Secretariat . There is no doubt in my mind he was the greatest ever .
I used to watch Secretariat because of Diane Lane, as she is SOOOO hot, but have become obsessed with the horse now. I watch every video or documentary on this phenomonal horse!!
that stride angle of Man is only 1 picture as u notice it is not as wide as the 1 from Secretariat, but as u look at the other pictures and actual footage Man O War's is as long if not wider.
You are correct that the revision of the official time for the 1973 Preakness was the consequence of current technologies. You may wish to read my 3-part comment on this.
Secretariat is also my favorite, cause I was at the age to actually see him race. I do feel Man O War was his equal if not superior. I don't feel the rope gave Man O War any advantage, I feel it hurt his times. How do you feel about Ruffian? Is it true Secretariat's trainer thought Ruffian was greater than Secretariat?
not sure about that. Tracks are a lot different today than in Man O War's day. Both are in the top 2 but it would be hard to compare them. Man O War didn't even have a starting gate to run from just a rope line. I don't really believe that video.
You know nothing. Man O War ran against about 2-3 horses a race. Secretariat would be undefeated if he had that. Secretariat also ran against thousands of more horses that were running in the nation than Man O War had to run against. Geez, why are people so blind and d###
he wasent 10-24 lengths behind. Secretariat was beaten 3 times where Man only lost once which people say was fixed because he was facing the wrong direction off the rope. Tracks are totally different and there is a gate now where in Man's day there was none.Rocky Marciano was undefeated where Secretariat lost 3. Ruffian was undefeated in all her races except the 1 she broke down in even to the point she was always in the lead and NEVER PASSED IN ANY RACE SHE EVER WAS IN. Lauren said she was 1!
Man O War was not as great as Secretariat. Even though he had a better win/loss record. Watch the video that compares the statistics between Secretariat and Man O War. Secretariat beats him in every category--from stride angle to fastest times on every length track. Seabiscuit is a grandson to Man O War.

by an outside source, the track clock had him off the record then like after the race they gave him the record by a fans watch lol. Electronic track clock says no.
The official writer for the Daily Racing Form is not just some fan. The track clock malfunctioned by starting early. Race times dont start as the horses leave the gate. They start at the first pole from which the race is measured. The timer starts when the first horse passes that pole.
@bulllea Thanks, all i know about that is that Mr Nack is portrayed by an actor, You know, the press gays, I missed it if the real Mr Nack appears somewere in the movie, Thanks a lot anyway,,,,,
he lost 3 times he was not perfect. You ignore the facts the track is not the same today and they were made to start off a rope which was unstable.Secretariat does not hold the track record for The Preakness. I have also seen were you said War Admiral was not a great horse. He only held the triple crown too. Secretariat's trainer even said Ruffian was the better horse,LOOK IT UP! He represented goodness and that’s what you described so beautifully. Thank you sir this was very important to all of us

I agree
There are so many of us!
Here I am, eight years after your comment...tears streaming.

I remember hearing of Secretariat's death. I wasn't a racing fan then, had no clue about the sport, but I remembered seeing Secretariat in Kentucky and in Baltimore and in New York. I grieved for him and I cried.
I loved this horse. He was a great one. Thanks for this informative video.
He was truly America's Horse
Secretariat was faster than man of war. LOOK IT UP. also Secretariat is considered the Greatest Racehorse that ever lived.PERIOD!
Alright relax
Secretary made the news when he passed I was devastated I cried

Love secretariat. And I miss him
such passion you had regarding the sport you represented. Your love for Secretariat is very evident.
The doctor said that he had never seen a heart that was so abnormally large yet perfect.

Really? What a shame
Bill nack what a great educator with such great provider of such great education about horseracing and Secretariat rip bill nack
I think s so deserving of Mr Nack to be recognized in the movie, !!!
Lets face it fans, no one here tapping letters on a keyboard will in their lifetime, see a horse again as great as Secretariat ! (:
True enough
I told my parents that we wont see a triple crown winner in our lifetime. Breeding is too exact and DNA plays a roll in it. I said we will just see some great horses win 2 of 3 but there wont be a triple crowner in our lifetime.
Then later that year...in came American Pharoh
One of my Prize Possession is a First Edition of Mr. Nack's book
Big Red was also one of the very few racehorses to be buried whole, not with just the head and 4 hooves.
I think I heard Assault was facing west at home on the King ranch.
Ruffian was buried whole too - with her nose towards the finish line at Belmont Park. RIP beautiful champions
Never before- never since -never again ---a Secretariat !
Thank you Bill, and may you be with Secretariat on the other side...
I remember the day exactly. I still have my local paper.
Big Red's genetics just skipped a generation of racehorses, but provided an opportunity of producers, especially within broodmares to provide great racehorses like Storm Cat and A.P. Indy as well as stallions.

Thank you for sharing
Secretariat was so successful, 35+ years later, horse trolls try to put him down.
Secretariat was not fat he was all muscle and his heart was more than twice the size of other horses. He was the perfect horse in size and ate what HIS body requirements. They cared for him like a child and love him the same!
Not in his retirement. He was overweight with a cresty neck. It was a shame what was done to him.

Why don't they go around the horses on the outside, instead of being stuck in the middle of all of that confusion, and not being able to move.
AP Indy, lost one race, tossed a shoe, and ran third. Then he won the Belmont and the Classic. He had a mamma named Weekend Surprise. Hello, Secretariats daughter!!!!!!!!!!!!
What about NORTHERN DANCER, he had sons and daughters, as great or better, than his remarkable record.

that stride angle of Man is only 1 picture as u notice it is not as wide as the 1 from Secretariat, but as u look at the other pictures and actual footage Man O War's is as long if not wider.
But the only thing that counts is the time at distance.

no they didn't ,they got it from a person in the field, there were other times given by various people clocking the race.
There was nothing Darwinian about him I strongly disagree with that statement. God made this horse for our country and our people weather you like that statement or not it is true. The lord almighty graced us with this beautiful animal.
@RAV52 I agree!
