They did an admirable job of recreating this miracle run but the original footage is what still raises the goosebumps and elicits the tears. A country in a gathering political storm, with a war waging in Vietnam and an oil crisis, this horse became a linchpin to hang the hopes of a nation upon. A supernatural performance!
Personally I think they butchered the Belmont. So many things were wrong with that seen from the race to the call of the race. The used Chic Anderson's words but it sounded so silly coming from whoever that voice was. I think they could have gotten permission to use his actual call but as I have heard they never asked fot it or for permission to use his words. Watching the actual footage is a million times better in my opinion and the only thing that might top that Belmont was Secretariat's Preakness run. His sudden burst of speed in that one was amazing.
I agree with Bobbywise2313’s comment - they did the same thing to this scene as they did in the last race scene in the Seabiscuit movie - they had well documented footage and still butchered the movie version. By the 3/4 mile mark, Secretariat had started to pull away. By the mile marker, Sham was being caught by the other horses and Secretariat was pulling away.
If you researched both horses and thought with your head instead of you heart, you would at least understand why Man o War is considered by a lot of folks as the GOAT.
@@randolphkersey5155 Man o' War was a great horse ,but, on that day NO horse living or dead in their lifetime would have beaten Big Red ! And as of yet over 2,000,000 horses have been born and no horse has come close to the Belmont time !
I've just been watching video after video and documentary after documentary (and just purchased a blueray version of Penny and Red: The Owner of Secretariat", can't wait to watch it), and just learning all I can about this great horse and those around him, remembering it all very vividly on TV when I was 14. Frequently, and especially if I'm having a rough day, I will just watch the original race videos, all of them, sometimes over and over, and especially the Belmont. (BTW, Ronnie Turcot said Secretariat was running easy the whole time, not straining.) Many here have mentioned his heart size, which was true, but I've learned that his bone structure, especially his lower legs, were a little shorter, but extremely thick, which also made it possible for him to train as he did and run as he did without injury. (Sham actually suffered an injury there at about the half way point of the Belmont, which is why he finished last.) He was also a little shorter front to back, which made him able to run the turns far better than most, as at the Preakness when he flew by everyone on the first turn. (Yet he had one of the longest strides ever. If you watch the real races, at times it seems like his legs are moving slower than the other horses because of this, when he was actually moving faster.) The harder he trained, the faster he was able to run, but over and over I've read that a normal horse today would break down completely after just a couple weeks, and though the horses then would do better, they also could not do anything like that. He truly was "The Horse That God Built". While Ron Turcotte said Sham's trainer "Pancho" was not like how he was presented, I saw one video by Bill Nack that said he was saying a lot of stuff about Lucian Loren making excuses (I'm assuming about the pre Kentucky Derby loss where he placed 3rd, and Sham placed second), etc, and he thought that his portrayal as the bad guy was actually pretty fair. I've also read a bunch of the comments here, and I agreed with all of them!

It's weird. Even before the movie was out, most of the scenes of the Belmont Race were up on RUclips already... But oh well. Good ol' Disney has a sense for epic clips. Shown perfectly in Secretariat.
I enjoyed the movie but this scene did not do the real thing justice. Chic Anderson's call was so much better. But hearing this guy use Mr. Anderson's words was just wrong. The most iconic sports call ever can be summed up with the words, " he is moving like a tremendous machine".
At the 3/4 mark in the actual race, Secretariat was already 10 lengths ahead of Sham. Secretariat ran the 2nd half of the race with no other horse near him. "Secretariat is all alone. Secretariat is moving like a tremendous machine." In the real race, the announcer had stated at the end "I said Secretariat won by 25 lengths but it could easily been more". It wasn't until after the race when the officials looked at the footage when they were able to determine the distance as 31 lengths. I found the footage from the real race to be more exciting than the movie. Why didn't they just use the actual footage? FYI the winning ticket only paid $2.10. Many spectators kept their $2 tickets as souvenirs rather than cash them in.

He talked about how smart he was and how Red would play with him. My dad went to visit Secretariat at Claiborne Farm after he was retired and said he was magnificent. Said he put on a show when he knew he was being watched. My dad met Seth Hancock that day and said he was a good man.
@@maggiemae6671 I need to get that book. Eddie definitely spent more time with him than anyone. What an incredible job that must have been. He had countless hours with Big Red when no one else was around. I have seen some documentaries in which Eddie spoke of Secretariat. He was described as having an almost human personality.
I told my wife that one day we are going to Claiborne farms so I can see his grave and observe his old stomping ground. I wish I would have got to see Big Red in person but thank God for all the videos we have.
I have recently purchased some Secretariat artwork as well as a t-shirt and cap. My wife thinks I am crazy and ask why I am obsessed with that horse. I don't think it is an obsession myself. I just really have an admiration for him and what he brought to the USA in a time when it needed a hero. God knows we could use another Secretariat now. But I don't think we will see one again in my lifetime. Ok maybe it borders on obsession. Lol
Amen to that 😃😃😀😄😁💗🥰😍💞greatest Racehorse of ALL TIME

Secretariat told Ronnie before the race. “ Hey Ronnie, let’s put on a show today”
Can you imagine naming a beautiful horse Sham. I can’t.
Today is the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby. I thought it would appropriate to watch Secretariat.
Anything is possible with the HOLY SPIRIT! ALL HEART ❤️
Secretariat, Man O'War, and Seabiscit- thorobreds who have not only transformed the track but also the average person.
I'm glad I'm not the only one!
Almost 50 years later his time, 2:24 is still the record.

3:16 "Ronnie, don't fall off!!!" xD
film of the original Belmont was a lot more exciting. That one never gets old.
Beautiful Owner
A true champion
chills
I was 5 yrs old at the rail and i remember it still like if it was today.that was the day i fell in love with horse racing.
His heart weighed 21lbs, a normal heart for a horse is 10-12lbs.
June 2020 and still watching.😍
