- Tested member Robbie DeHaan asked Adam why, in early MythBusters episodes, Jamie and Adam worked with the "build team," but as time went on, only collaborated on special occasions. "What was the reasoning for this decision and did you prefer the two teams to work together or act separately?" Here's Adam's answer, and thanks, Robbie, for your question! There was a missed opportunity to have an Australian team in a workshop named M8
I see what you did there... the lead guy could be the Masterm8ter... ehh your joke was better
Wow, this is one of the best comments we've EVER seen on one of our videos. Well done!
You cheeky bastard. ❤
There was...Beyond Productions
I don't get the joke... I'm not a native en speaker
Favorite interaction with you and Tori was Tori joking “maybe its a myth that gasoline is flammable” and Adam replying “no, we are just idiots” when you couldn't get the gas/air mixture right. You all worked so well together.
I love how every one of these videos start off with a good 10-15 seconds of Adam just adjusting the camera
There is a joy in the raw quality of it.
It's the brand now
Yes!🤣
I love that he's using the clapper that he built
I love adam
I had the awesome opportunity to be on set at M7 for the filming of the Punching/Boxer scenes for the 'Knock Your Socks Off Revisited' episode. A couple things surprised me (in no particular order): 1) M7 was in an area of SF that isn't exactly the friendliest, to put it kindly. Especially at night. 2) The shop, and the ally it was in, were smaller than the TV show makes it appear. 3) Kari was very cool. She was the only one who acknowledged my existence and actually talked to me for a minute between shots once. 4) Grant (RIP) did all the math on his phone while the rest of the cast did 'stuff'. 5) They filmed their reactions to an experiment multiple times. The first was genuine and live, the rest were shortly after and almost identical. 6) The shop was surprisingly close to a fire station & cab company, which ruined a number of shots. 7) It was way harder then I thought it would be to not be a fan-boy.
All in all it was an amazing experience.
One thing I always respected about Adam is that he tends to remember names of people he has worked with even years later
This is true, especially when those people aren't such big names everyone's expected to know well enough to remember
A skill I myself don't have... Im terrible with names/faces a lot of times.
He's worked with them for decades...
I can't even remember the names of people I worked with a week ago. Name memory is an enviable skill, to be sure.
Some folks are really good at that. Will Smith was at some awards show and recognized a cameraman, greeting him by name. Classy.
I audibly gasped when Adam said that Richard Hammond is one of his favourite hosts! I grew up on MythBusters and Top Gear so hearing that was so lovely!
I was literally watching the ambulance challenge just before clicking this video
Nearly coincident with Mythbusters in the beginning, the Hamster was doing Brainiac. That show was in the same general genre as Mythbusters. It was a bit looser with adherence to reality than Mythbusters, though. I remember them doing something with alkali metals in water, and as they got down the electropositivity scale (Na, K, Rb, Cs), they substituted C4 to get a really big bang. That was a minor scandal.
@@Markle2k Oh yeah, I used to love Brainiac.
@@Markle2k The genre called "Science and blowing up stuff".
People forget Top Gear was shown on Discovery channel for one season. They made special episodes that were just challenges and pretty much no studio segments.
The weird thing is doing the math and realizing that Mythbusters was part of my life for 2/3 of my life from age 6-18.
Bruh it still is part of mine
I mean, in a certain light - it remains part of mine. It's in the past, and it was enjoyable to watch at the time. I won't give it a past tense until I really come to feel I no longer want to watch the material again.
... I look forward to trying to show it to the nieces once they're old enough. They deserve to know why I occasionally mutter '...want big boom' while playing BattleTech.
I never realized how many episodes you guys were kicking out some seasons. I just realized after Mythbusters and Dirtyjobs ended I really haven't watched anything on Discovery channel.
After those two shows there was nothing ever worth watching on there & still isn't.
Lmao... I sat here for five minutes trying to argue this in my mind and came up with "no that was History channel", "No that was on National Geographic", "Nope...Animal Planet".......Well played sir.
@@benkeysor7576 deadliest catch. At least the early seasons....those three shows are basically it
Battlebots is pretty good
@@sazrocks6 ... i agree. I haven't watched anything on discovery, for a long time. It's gotten to the point, where I'm watching shows on, Nickelodeon lately.
I grew up watching Mythbusters. I'm not sure if there was any single one moment in my life that inspired me to pursue engineering, but watching your show definitely gave me a nudge in the right direction. Thank you, Adam, for all that you have done and continue to do to encourage others to ask about the why and how.
“If you weren’t there, you wouldn’t understand the explanation. And if you were there I don’t need to explain it.’
"You had to be there..."
"We few. We happy few."
That also answers the related question I’ve always wanted to ask: what lead to the addition of 3 more hosts. As much as I love watching you and Jamie work, I have to say promoting the build team to hosts gave the show more texture and probably contributed significantly to its success.
I think he mentioned it in this video. They were asked to make more episodes per season, so they brought in more people so they could multi-task easier
@@duck74UK That’s what I was saying.
@@duck74UK They didn't exactly "bring them in" though - I'm pretty sure all three of the original "build team" (Kari, Tory & Scottie) were already working for M5 and/or Mythbusters during S1, where they appeared in background/cameos (Kari infamously got her butt scanned for the toilet myth, something they loved to trot out in clip shows!).
In other words, Grant was the only one who got hired *as* a host, to replace Scottie, the others were - to use a TVTropism - Ascended Extras.
I remember not really liking Kari's team, when they first showed up, I wanted all myth to be done by Adam and Jamie. Of course that was just my bias, and I really got to like them after a few episodes. In retrospect, with how Mythbusters exploded, and having ever bigger projects, having at least two teams was a must.
Thanks for answering my question, Adam!
Thanks for asking it, Robbie.
It was a good question. It was something I always wondered myself.
Thanks for asking it, and for your support!
I always wished they did an episode where they would trade one member to the other team. For example Adam with Kari and Tory, and Grant with Jamie
And Grant does his Jamie moustache hands and talk like Jamie the entire time.
I'm sure they would have if they didn't film several episodes at a time. You would end up bouncing hosts back and forth between shops like an air hockey puck to have everyone on the correct project.
I just watched the Baseball Special and it had Jamie, Grant and Tory testing sliding into a base with no Adam or Kari in sight.
Seeing Grant in the thumbnail... it still hurts, such a talented man
Pretty sure that's why Adam was tearing up at the end. Grant is a damn fine man and mythbuster.
I love these behind-the-scenes/questions about Mythbusters episodes the joy and reverence that Adam has when he talks about the show and his co-workers for all those years is amazing to watch and see. It makes me realize that we will probably never see anything like it on television again and that those of us who got to experience it every week really were a part of something incredible even if we didn't know how incredible at the time.
I've been getting into these videos, and i love how organic they all are. It's so nice to see his gears spin while he thinks and reminisce about mythbusters. I feel like i can relate to his emotions and his thinking, all while learning about one of my favorite tv shows
I agree it feels like your sitting there having a conversation with him
Props for plugging Tory’s current show.
Sorry to say it but The Escapists was awful, I was very disappointed.
@@ilusnforc3 Yeah. I watched it to the end, but it was so staged. There was a potential to do something like the Duct Tape episodes, or the Escape from Alcatraz in Mythbusters, but they opted to build fake props instead. By the time they tried to pass off the commercial tiny helicopter as self-built it was insulting to the viewer.
I wanted to like The Escapists. I watched the entire series. It was so awful. The entire thing felt so forced and over produced. They spent more time in the weird police station then explaining how they built anything. Everything just magically fell out of the sky for them.
Exactly. I was expecting it to be more reality and science based like the duct tape episodes and real survival situations. The interrogation scenes were the worst part, Tory is not an actor and has no business trying to act... It was awful. Colin Furze makes Tory's screw tank look like a joke and yeah there was nothing passable about the gyrocopter. The whole thing was over the top stupidity and not funny at all, just cringe. I also forced myself to finish watching all the way through and I want my time back. So sad, I was so excited with anticipation in what it could have been.

Click on 4:05 cuz at about 4:10 to 4:15 there's this moment of contemplation on Adam's face that says volumes of nothing in those five seconds or so, in between the "were so much fun" it's like his brain just barrells through all those fun memories and there are no words there's no way to convey to the camera what's going on in that silence, so all he can do is repeat himself. They were fun, what more can he say? Perhaps trying to take just one of those instances in that silence and talk about that for twenty minutes would not do any of it justice. You had to have been there. That's what that face says to me. He wishes he could share that fun with all of us, but some memories just can't be translated. So much fun.
Strangely enough, I read something a little more somber in that look. "Were so much fun" and then this look of nostalgia and a little sadness? But of course, I'm probably projecting because that look made me want to cry a little.
I've been watching alot of the mythbusters rerurns on Amazon video lately so hearing Adam start talking about this, reminiscing was just so wholesome and moving...
I read into it also the sadness of having lost Grant Imahara all too soon.
The love and reverence you have for your Mythbusters years just shines through the camera. I recognize it in myself from my career in Radio. Nine years at the top Country station in Canada during the Garth/Shania boom years was like being a rodeo rider but you weren’t allowed off the horse. Ever. Being one of five jocks and the public face of that station was incredibly fun and harder work than anyone except the other announcers will ever know. The creative support staff certainly had a feel for it but their experience wasn’t the same as the talents even though they were huge contributors to what we did in the booth. The bond of that unique and shared experience will never be broken and all but one of them are still my closest friends 22 years after I left. There is a short hand of communication between us that’s similar to a spouse but sometimes tighter. Like the Mythbusters crew are to you, those jocks are my Band of Brothers.
Adam, I have always held an incredible amount of respect for you, you've been a real class act who significantly shaped who I've become as a person as I was lucky enough to have grown up watching MythBusters. It's fantastic to see you still doing what you love and the passion you have for your work, both past and present. Thank you for being such a huge part of my childhood and I wish you the best for all you do.
I remember Scottie, and I missed her. Grant, however, filled a hole in my heart that I didn't know was there.
Scottie was great. I remember wishing she would have been the fill-in when Kari was out on maternity leave.
When the lights went out and the pipes froze your videos helped me get through those cold nights. Thank you Adam and the Tested crew
It was a nice comfort to get internet back and be able to watch a long build while keeping the fire going (even if the video was 144p).
Now I've gotten the positivity out of the way, I can't help myself.
My testes crew is a constant source of stress, but I'm glad you're good with yours.
Fun typo
@@BlackSoap361 Adam Savage’s Testes is a VERY different channel.
That'll be his onlyfans account name.
The idea of the two teams as being effectively separate shows during production and until they’re synthesized into an episode makes a lot of how the series was presented make a lot of sense
Myth Busters was the best stuff i ever seen. Sometimes i'm back and watch old episodes. Big greetings from Poland. Thank you for all your job and many smile on my face.
Thank you for all the shows. Thank you for the laughs, the wows, the arched eyebrows and open mouths.
It sounds as though, if there would ever be a chance for a reunion it would be for the sake of experiencing and sharing that joy of friendship that you talked about. Thank you for that moment!
I'm REALLY surprised Discovery hasn't approached Adam for a 2nd season of Mythbusters Jr, or Savage Builds, if not on the channel, for the Discovery + streaming service. If Discovery + DID have a show with Adam, it would likely be the deciding factor I need to sign up!
Thanks Adam, I guessed that was the answer and I loved those later collaborations as a viewer. The energy and vibe when the full team was together definitely came across loud and clear. Because you guys were having a great time and it usually also involved a big myth so did your audience making those shows extra special.
I love watching his smile grow as he starts reminiscing about the show.
I've recently rewatched all the available Mythbusters and devoured the Escapists, having familiar hosts shows has made lockdown so much more bearable and inspired me to start learning model making, engineering and problem solving solutions like Mark Rover. I feel thankful for Mythbusters and this channel too.
Just gotta say one of the best moments of my life was meeting you and Jamie when you were doing your touring show when i was in high schook. You happened to be in vegas while we were there and got to see the show, and i got picked to go on stage. I went on stage for doing a rasberry to a high speed camera, and took a photo with you and jamie with my twin sister
"I don't know how we're gonna do that without dying" what a relatable mood right there

I would love to know how long it took Adam to regrow his eyebrow when he fried it off on the early mythbusters with the infamous line of "Am I missing an eyebrow?"
Sure the Mythbusters camera operators had it tough, but their job was nothing compared to the Dirty Jobs' camera people :P
Just wish Mike Rowe had stayed as cool as you are.
@@MildlyDampElk Adam is decidedly Gen X. The youngest "boomers" are 9 years older than Adam.
@@xuthnet I didnt know how old he was how old is he?
That connection that the Mythbusters hosts share. It makes me think about my time at Philmont, and how everyone who's been there (and even more so if they worked there) has an immediate level of intimacy with each other. You know the vibe/attitude of the place (which is very difficult to convey), you know the important elements, you have experiences that connect, though every trek is different from the last. The moment you realize that you both have that in your past, you are already friends. It's incredible.
I remember meeting someone years ago and the topic came up, and we immediately had a multi-hour excited discussion. And coworkers at the time, it was really interesting because so many of them, you immediately felt like you had known each other for a while, just this built-in connection.
I don’t know why but hearing and seeing Adam just warms my heart...I’ve started re watching MythBusters on Amazon recently and it’s just so much fun seeing how it started and seeing how it evolves season after season. What a unique and amazing bunch of people...so happy it was part of my early teens
It’s because he’s a genuinely good, happy guy and that’s so rare these days.
I know Tory and Kari were there practically from the beginning, but Grant didn't appear on-camera until like season 3. Before he was part of "The Build Team", Scottie Chapman was working with Tory and Kari.
I lived with someone that used to work in scripted tv (from outdoor night shoots to set on a soundstage. Even unscripted shows like Mythbusters can take a lot more time than you think. Scripted TV often has multiple crews working at the same time on different scenes in different locations or sets. The Mythbusters, doing an outdoor shoot where they have booked a location, could possibly lose a few days due to weather, there might not be anything to do in that down time, and you have to stay on schedule. Any large outdoor build might be called off for wind or rain.
That crew really worked their asses off so we could enjoy that show.
These videos are a great mental relief. Thank you for the effort you put in to doing this.
I love Adam, hes like the father I never had.
I am also older than him I think. lol
Could never get enough Mythbusters, and I still watch it on reruns.
Love your Tested channel, never miss a show.
Keep up the great work!
Amazing how much of all those years you all spent on the show. And while I was busy growing up! Makes me grateful it happened in my time.
The one where you were all together were the best ones ! I so loved the interactions
Sounds like alot of work and alot of fun. I for one am very thankful of yalls work. Mythbusters shaped my interests at a young age and I doubt I'd have my hunger for understanding if it weren't for all of yalls hard work.
I’d want to hear Adam talk about that one time the team prank shocked him
I think that's the only time I've EVER seen Adam mad!
That was not a funny prank any in betting if Adam hadn't been shocked by that electric fence box before (with no lasting I'll effects) the production people might have stepped in to stop them.
He talked about it at some point don't rember where but in short the producer forced that to happen, and that was the end of that producers involment with mythbusters. anyone have link?
@KingOfKYA really? They wanted it to happen? Fuck, that's mental.
As Adam has said, they are massive voltage and low current, but still plenty to stop your heart.
I got a bang across the shoulders when I picked up a fence that bulls had knocked over, i thought id isolated it but on an old farm they're often linked to other feeds than is obvious.
Id usually check with a blade of grass before i touch anything id work on but i was sure and in a rush.
It knocked me over the quad bike behind me, i landed upside down with my head off to one side, unable to breathe.
Im 100kg 1.9m and i flew like a ragdoll.
The smaller units give you a zap, the bigger ones can hurt you.

But the smokers car underwater one is called something similar too

Yup what the dude above said, ur English is great as is :)
And you should say “reason for the two sections” rather than “reason of”

Great English, but you missed a comma; it should be "kari, tory, and grant".
When listing more than 2 people, ideas, or objects you always add a comma inbetween them then one before the and/ or.

I'm not very good at science or math or anything but MythBusters was always one of my favorite shows for all kinds of reasons. You guys really achieved something.
I always assumed this was the case, I'm a machinist, and I remember thinking it must have been really crowded the first season trying to get all the builds done.
At the end there, you could visably see Adam struggling not to break up and be his Cheerful self. Whatever the reason for this (joy or sadness) it is very touching.
As a casual MB fan this is the first I’m hearing of most of this, including the teams splitting. Really unique formula for a show, to have two myths done by different teams in the same episode
Adam: In case you read this -- just so you know, in later seasons, when it was presented as Adam/Jamie doing their myths and the other three doing their myths with less and less overlap is the largest influence on why the show lessened its appeal to me. I still loved it, but the forces that caused that separation took one of the most special things away from the show, for me. I realize this is looking back, and not changeable now. I do appreciate all that you did and thank you for the great shows, though.
This sounds like exactly how I feel as an auto parts jockey if you will. It is so delightful when I call another store and can get out what I am looking for in 10 seconds and they comprehend every single word at that speed and I can truly tell they speak my language. It is even better when I get to work with them and can use shorthand everything and speak quickly and know that everything just clicks.
I really miss watching Mythbusters... On one of Adam Savages Tested, he told us how the insurance company was first very hesentent on letting them test stuff till they found out there crew was the handful of folks to do it safely. Then they where like "well you got the skill so do it safely and have fun." With what sounded like free rain to test anything.... I loved watching the Mythbusters and they called the bomb squad to use there area, or was it the old base for the run way... Well they called the location like "Um do you mind if we just stop by in say a hour to do this test?" and they got the green light to just come on over....(Crazy fast for permits to do anything)
Thank you! Thank you for your honesty! So rare... And in no way detrimental to anyone!! You're awesome adam!! Loyal to the end
Mythbusters wasn't the same when grant, tori and kari l"eft", it felt forced, like it should have ended when they left.
worse yet was the white rabbit project I couldn't sit through the 2nd episode and i cant even remember why i didn't like it
Yeah, I’m inclined to agree, Dallas Grant. But if they had quit, they would have deprived us of that GLORIOUS final season!
I really like some of the episodes in the last season.
As a railroad buff, I liked the tank car implosion.
@@johnblair8146 I saw a clip of that, yeah it was cool.
As an fan of mythbusters , i can say those were the best episodes, to us the viewers seeing you all work together on a project was the best, we felt part of that process. As you said they were two different production teams and we as viewers noticed it, it was fantastic but it was not the same thing, however it is understandable why did you have to do it that way
The thumbnail for the video is such a great picture of you all together.
I’ve always wondered this
Dude, MythBusters is my all time favourite show. Tested is fantastic keep up the good work.
Can you speak about battle bots? How much does it typically cost to build a bot? Do you get paid to participate? Do you get put up in a hotel? About what would you estimate would the whole bot experience would set someone back? Do they typically have sponsors?

4:12 me too, Adam. Me too
I don't think this needs to be said here, but still, RIP to Grant and Jessi Combs. Creating a second team really added an imperceptible second "layer" of brains, who were intelligent in different areas of art, science, and engineering, which filled out the show as a whole. And yeah, Jessi was only supposed to be a "fill in" for Carrie, but in time, she created her own little spot in the show, and was a GREAT choice all around. I'll miss both of em. 🙏🏻 👼👼
you have a beautiful way of expressing yourself, Adam
I'm rewatching Mythbusters on Amazon Prime at the moment and I think I need to watch more carefully because I have always thought that M5 and M7 were nextdoor neighbours! They were a 5 minute bike ride apart from each other?! 🤯 I could have sworn they both opened onto the same car park...
Adam has such a vocabulary. Every other video or so im learning a new word. Won't ever use them correctly if at all but im learning.

Honestly, its this kind of response that made everyone so shocked to find out that Adam and Jamie weren't actually friends. I get it, don't get me wrong, but it just seems strange from the outside looking in that people could work that closely through so much and just not be friends.
Shame, they could have spun off. Maybe had a sitcom, or a reality tv show.
Adam and Jamie are two professionals. They had a job to do and they did it. Masterfully!!!!!
The modern Odd Couple.
That old wooden toolbox behind you reminds me of the one my dad has, it's almost exactly the same! 😁
Adam is so blessed. Intelligence, skill and great friendships
Adam seems to have given himself a new career talking about the the old career... not complaining! I love these videos!
I have wondered over the last few years what it would have been like to have Grant Thompson and Grant Imahara on the same episode of MB. I miss seeing both of them. RIP brothers
I miss Mythbusters so much. I can see how he talked of such things. He spoke as if everyone were Giants. And they were. You couldn't make Mythbusters again, because you need the right two people to do all this, and they had it right, first try. God Bless Adam and Jaime. Glad Adam is in his element, the cave.
1:53 That's a span of time from from GTA: San Andreas to GTA V, for you kids out there, that MythBusters covered

What happened to the Bridgeport mill ?

HI ADAMMM!!!! I love your videos! Jeep up the good work!!🤙🤙😌😌
I've often wondered about the split in the teams. I remember when the "build team" became their own unit and I thought the show was missing something because they weren't all working together on the same stuff. It just didn't seem to be as much fun to watch. I much preferred it when it was the five of them (with Scottie when she was there) working together.
shout out to Richard Hammond. i always hoped for a Mythbusters/Top Gear crossover, especially on the car myths. i get the feeling James May and Jamie would get along. in fact i think that Adam referenced TG when doing the speed camera myth.
I understand why it happened and I enjoyed having more episodes to watch as much as anyone else, I still think it took something away from the show when the two teams became pretty much completely separate. I wish they could have found a way to at least sprinkle in collaborations more often.
"Three weeks is a great amount of time to get off, don't get me wrong"
Some accidental innuendo there. Never change, Adam
In the past few years, the definition of a "season" is 5 episodes....
Seriously, television?
I honestly thought that "the split" happened after the second team pranked Adam with the electric shock on the Ark of the Covenant replica - promising him up and down that it wasn't electrified.
I spot a difference here....either that Bridgeport mill got a new paint job OR it has been replaced. I am intrigued.
Eu amo o programa mythbusters e toda a sua equipe
Not being from a military background myself, as you aren't as far as I know, I am not certain but this sounds a lot like what I have heard termed "battle brothers." Those of you who lived through THAT battle are the only "brothers" in that experience who really KNOW what it was like, no matter how many non-participating observers there may have been. And battle brothers baptized in fire are for life.
I guess Benny is such an absolute legend of a camera man that a last name is not required.
Adam have you ever considered doing a MB style mini series with you and Tori? You guys have good chemistry, and I know Jamie won’t do it again. Just a nice paced 30 min 1 myth program? Man that would be nice.
Mythbusters is a really great show. I watch reruns whenever I can.
It’s impossible to imagine that in 3 years mythbusters will have been over for 10 years
I'm not a patreon supporter, but someone should ask him if he would do another Mythbusters sort of show or a reboot with Torry and Kari. It would be cool to get Jamie involved but I think Adam has made the point plenty of times through the years that they will probably never work on another project like that again.
Wow, that new mill really looks sharp.
what Adam is saying about only those people knowing what it was like, is sort of what i am always trying to explain to people that think its weird i try to keep some level of friendship with my ex girlfriends. regardless of what happened, at some point of my life they were my best friend. they lived with me and slept with me and knew me better than anyone else did at that time, and i always think its weird that people just dump someone they spent years with and just forget about them. this girl was the one person the one constant in my life and experienced all these things with me from the time i was 16-18 or 20-24 or 27-30 or 34-37 etc...of course they meet someone new and move on and you meet someone new that doesnt want you talking to your ex. but its still weird to me, that you have to just forget a part of your life.
Mythbusters will never be duplicated, in my opinion it is and was the greatest show of all time!
