Gunman Wearing MAGA Hat Shoots Indigenous Activist at New Mexico Protest over Conquistador Statue

- In New Mexico, a 23-year-old gunman wearing a red MAGA hat opened fire last week on Jacob Johns and other Indigenous activists opposing plans to reinstall a statue honoring the 16th century conquistador Juan de Oñate, New Mexico's first colonial governor. Johns, the prominent climate activist, was airlifted from Española to an Albuquerque hospital and required emergency surgery. We speak with Malaya Peixinho, who participated in Thursday's gathering, about how the statue of the colonial leader has divided the local community. "It is a really controversial thing to talk about Oñate," says Peixinho, who believes funds for the statue could go to social programs instead. "That feels more important than funding a statue being resurrected." The shooter, Ryan Martinez, was arrested and charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for shooting Johns and aiming the gun at Peixinho, who calls the charges "fair" and blames police for not intervening. "They didn't show up for us," says Peixinho.

Just to provide context. As an indigenous person myself, this is our ancestor too. Any indigenous person who has ever taken a DNA test will discover a significant amount of their genetic makeup is Spanish. This doesn’t discount what the Spanish did, but these people should understand that they aren’t homogenous. According to other sources, the shooter was disrupting the crowd by getting physical. When the protestors tried to fend him off, that is when he pulled out his gun.
They weren't. They were trying to get him to leave because he was harassing the people who were protesting, and he was physically threatening this young lady with a gun.

I need much more context of the lead up to this, because in the short video provided I see the suspect being chased and grappled by a large group of men. So who escalated physical violence 1st? Because in this video the perp is clearly not the aggressor, the victim actually is... I was so confused when I clicked because the reporters description is much different to what I see actually unfold. All I see is a panicked dude getting ganged up on by a larger group of dudes, these scenarios often lead to death or permanent injury and justify self defense shooting in a court of law. He had reason to fear for his life and the fact he didnt empty his mag but only fired one shot is indicative of an attempt to just stop the attack rather than commit murder. He very well could be a massive scumbag but unless there is more footage of him initiating the attack I dont see how this isnt a 'good shoot' and justifiable leading to acquittal in our court system.

Sometimes people will look at a situation and make judgements about it. There's a channel on here where the narrator reads old pieces from reporters from 100 years ago or more. In one the reporter was being escorted through an impoverished black community. Among other things, most people in that community didn't have beds.
Well, if you'd escaped with your life from a place where your house was burned down or stolen, you wouldn't have a bed, would you? You lost everything, literally, and you work for low wages in a new place. First you need a roof over your head and food to eat. A bed will come later.
The reporter never sat down and talked with the people. He was always escorted by policemen (to ensure his safety). He didn't spend an extended period of time in the community. What did he really know about the people there?
And, of course, I'm assuming that some of those people were from places where their homes were stolen from them. There may have been other reasons for lack of beds.
I can't change the past. But I can work hard to not make assumptions, and to treat everyone fairly.
