It's one of McCoy's best stories. Just everything about it is great : great side characters(the sort of UNITesque military, Ratcliffe, Mike, etc.), the in-jokes hinting to the program's past(with the TV transmission), the continuation of the Dalek civil war, the great action sequences, the infamous "stairs" cliffhanger, memorable dialogue(the unlimited rice pudding), great chemistry between Ace and the Doctor. It's a Dalek story that is effectively turned up to 11 - and a truly great way to start the show's 25th season.
Once McCoy got his characterisation right... His Dr stands side by side with previous incarnations. I love this story....mysterious Doctor and kick ass companion.
11:56 It's not unambigious if Davaros survives, you can clearly see the escape pod traveling downwards from the mother ship in this scene, he's well clear of the explosion.
Remembrance Of The Daleks is my favourite episode of Dr Who. The doctor is on top form, the Daleks are brilliant and it just a good action story with lots of explosions and gunfights. Not only is this my favourite Dalek episode but my favourite episode ever. I'd love to see another Dalek story like this in the 2020's.
One of the things that bothered me about this story is how useless the white daleks kind of are? During the iconic scene with the white dalek going up the stairs, why doesn't the dalek just shoot the doctor from below the stairs? It didn't need to chase him up the stairs. He's not holding a knife, he's got a gun. The second cliffhanger with Ace and the group of white daleks, they're just surrounding her and shouting exterminate without actually shooting. They could've exterminate her like 50 times by the time the doctor arrives. And she evaded like 2 or 3 daleks before that too. I'm just gonna chalk it up to the transmat maybe messing with their ray gun somewhat. Maybe they have to 'charge up' their weapon or something like that. Then later when the grey and white daleks first face off in the streets, there were four white daleks and two grey daleks, and both group are shooting at each other, and no one got shot for like 5 seconds, which is forever in a gun fight. And they were face to face, it's not like they're across really far away or anything like that. And then in the end the TWO grey daleks somehow able to defeat the FOUR white daleks? Same thing with the final battle at the junkyard. A bunch of daleks shooting at each other and no one gets hit. The only useful white daleks seems to be the special weapons daleks. Without them, the white daleks basically shot NOTHING this whole story. They had a better design, but they're kind of useless. The grey Daleks were a lot better. They killed a bunch of humans, and destroyed a few white daleks. They had the little girl in control who could shoot lightning out of her hands (super cool), and they're the ones that found the hand of omega. I wish the story would've focused more on just the grey Daleks, and only show the imperial white daleks in the later parts of the story. Maybe even have the doctor be the one to contact them down to instigate the civil war conflict as it kicks into the third act. The story would be a lot more focused if we only have one dalek group to follow. The grey dalek group with the neo-nazi subplot and the mystery/twist of the little girl would be enough to support the story. The white daleks didn't really do anything until the fourth episode. The story would've flowed a lot better if they only found the white daleks half way into the story in eps 2 or 3 instead of so early in the story. Put the discovery of the transmat at the end of ep 2, leaving ep 3 to deal with the white daleks. Have eps 1 and 2 deal with the hand of omega and the neo-nazi association, maybe leaving the headmaster as a mystery before revealing the imperial daleks at the midpoint of the story.
"Just one thing, gov'ner! I thought you said he was an old geezer with white hair?!" One of McCoy's better stories -- despite the fact I didn't believe Mike Smith's character for a second.
Now that we're done with the classic series, i'd like to know your opinion on it's serialized style. Do you think the multi part serials work better than the single part (minus 2 parters) modern style? I ask this because many classic fans claim that the new series feels rushed. Love this story btw
Wow, what a flashback to my early teens. One of my favourite storylines. What’s not to love? The story featured Michael Sheard AKA Mr Bronson from Grange Hill, who also appeared in The Empire Strikes back as Imperial Navy Admiral Ozzel. I loved the Imperial Daleks, particularly the ‘special weapon’ Dalek with the huge cannon. Sophie Aldred’s character Ace was new, refreshing, and different as the Dr’s companion, and I have to admit I definitely fancied her 🫢😍
This episode is amazing and is easily one of my favorite episodes in the shows history. It has wonderful characters, the best action sequences of the classic series, and incredible political commentary. I actually sampled the Doctor and Johns conversation in my most recent album! And your absolutely correct, the opening for part one is one of the best in any TV show.
I recently listened to ‘1963: The Assassination Games’ which sees Gilmore, Rachel and Alison returning. And I really liked hearing the Countermeasures Team again after Remembrance
I absolutely love this Dalek story and probably the most accessible to fans who are only really aware of new Who. Visually it's the most amazing and well executed Dr Who story during the classic era considering the limitations of the budget. I love the subtle references. There's even a throwaway line pertaining to Professor Bernard Quatermass that some people may have missed. The modern Doctor's have a penchant for making big, meaningful speeches but 'unlimited rice pudding' is still the best Dr Who rant of any of them.
Great review of my favourite TV story. Greatly looking forward to future reviews, especially the Asylum of the Daleks and Witches Familiar reviews. I'm sure those two are gonna get a good slatting.
I sure can't wait for people to start getting mad with you for making a reference to current politics, because having political opinions is bad, apparently.
@@crimsondynamo615 Politics has always been a part of Doctor Who. I agree. It's just that the show knew how to present it very well so it blended with the story more naturally. Unfortunatley, Chibnall isn't a good writer.
I can remember watching these episodes.......the "Heavy" Dalek was a cool addition. Sylvestor McCoy did a good job and Ace was always a sharp contrast and foil. Ace was also the object of a decent story arc that concluded in "The curse of Fenric" which gave insight into who Ace really was, and why she was unique.
This is possibly the best dalek story in the classic series. I remember watching this episode back when I was a young man. Now years later, I now have this episode as a special edition DVD and loved the episode all over again

Ace is fucking awesome. Name one other companion who the first time she met the daleks would just would grab a 1960's RPG and blow a dalek to bits, Beat multiple daleks with a baseball bat because they called her small and make explosives in her spare time? Oh and big Ups to Sophie Aldred. That was a real Rocket launcher, yes it was a stunt but a damn good one with the actors doing it.
Was Remembrance really the start of the Time War? Like in Resurrection of the Daleks the plan is to clone to Doctor and companions to assassinate the high council. An Genesis of the Daleks was technically the Time Lords trying to make a preemptive strike....
Thanks for the review; I missed several references; I recognized some of the more obvious ones. I really didn't like the Doctor being mysterious -- at least, not the way they did it with Sylvester McCoy... he wasn't so much mysterious as just withholding information for no reason whatsoever, which seemed just silly. I remember watching this, probably when it was first on in the US, and being amazed at the Dalek going up the stairs.

Can't believe you've gotten through all the classics already, would be nice to delve into big finish just so that all the Doctors are represented in this series but now it's time for quite possibly the best Dalek episode ever.
I was shocked by how good this was when I first saw it. BBC sfx explosions had a bit of a reputation of being literal damp squibs, but not here. Ace as a bat wielding no nonsense hero was amazing and the doctor trying to be clever but perhaps too clever was compelling to watch. This may be a minority viewpoint, but I do feel that Who's unusual format was definately keeping out new viewers.

It's a Dalek story that is effectively turned up to 11 - and a truly great way to start the show's 25th season.
Holy shit, I can imagine one of the soldiers having PTSD watching The Daleks episode.
But a fireball does seem to follow him, something that Big Finish surprisingly acknowledged in Terror Firma
Baseball Bat + Hand of Omega = Invincible Ace
Shit she should have fought in the Time War with that bat. She could work with Leela and charge the front lines Red Army style.
I thought you said he was an old geezer with white hair?!"
One of McCoy's better stories -- despite the fact I didn't believe Mike Smith's character for a second.
Your Eastenders "ending" really made me chuckle 🤣🤣
I adore your edits in these videos.
My introduction to Doctor Who and still one of my favourite stories they ever did.
Your review did this wonderful story full justice. Those who haven't seen it should definitely check it out.
We need more Special Weapon Daleks in the modern series.
15:36 That's a terrifying cliffhanger. (Whipsery ghost girl voice) The Daleks will return.
THIS is my favourite Dalek story!
Incredible stuff. The pacing was INSANE!!!
Apparently criticising bad people is bad.
“Oh wait I’m sorry Doctor Who was never political until Chris Chibnall came along. My mistake.”
@@crimsondynamo615 Politics has always been a part of Doctor Who. I agree. It's just that the show knew how to present it very well so it blended with the story more naturally. Unfortunatley, Chibnall isn't a good writer.
This is a far better 25th anniversary tribute than Silver Nemesis.
Nice video! This is one story I can watch over and over, so many good moments, it’s always entertaining.
I was gonna comment on this vid but... more on that later...
The opening reminds me of a new hope with the star destroyer being the Dalek mothership
That cold open really is the best in all Doctor Who.
Totally ranks high in classic Dalek stories! My only gripe was the wobbly daleks... but I never when noticed them in 1988! Haha
Oh my gosh! Joseph Marcell as John! 2 years later after this, he would be on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as Geoffrey. From Shoreditch to Bel-Air. :)
first episode is the first thing I can ever remember watching on tv.... and now I collect daleks XD
I started watching Dr Who regularly from Paradise Towers but it was Remembrance of the Daleks that made me a fan for life :)
My mom actually bullied Ben Aaronovitch in primary school. I was watching this story and her face was priceless when she saw who wrote it
Did your mother attend Hollway/Beacon High? That was the secondary school, Ben went too.
@@robotx9285 no, it was primary school, not secondary. Brookfield, but she only attended for a few years as she moved here from Massachusetts when she was 8
Ace is fucking awesome.
I rewatched this story, yesterday. And, I’m still sure this is my favourite Doctor Who story of all time.
Was Remembrance really the start of the Time War?
Like in Resurrection of the Daleks the plan is to clone to Doctor and companions to assassinate the high council.
An Genesis of the Daleks was technically the Time Lords trying to make a preemptive strike....
RTD states that Genesis was the first act of the Time War. Course destroying Skaro doesn’t help.
Genesis starts it, Rememberance didn’t help matters. But I don’t think the actual events of the war kick off until the time of the 8th Dr
'Later that same evening'. Lol. Dude I'm trying to work with your video playing in the background. I nearly spat out my coffee
This was the first classic story I watched in it's entirety, and remains to be a favourite of mine. It is easily my favourite Dalek story by a long mile, and is my second-favorite story overall, secondly only to The Moonbase.
First Dalek dr who I bought on vhs when I was 7. I was fascinated. Fell In love with those old classics and then - fucking russel t Davies /:
I love Remembrance of the daleks it is my favourite daleks story from the 1980st era of classic Dr who and I love it alot this is the story that made ace become my third favourite doctor who companie
‘Ashes to ashes.. Dust to dust!’
I first watched this story when I was 6 I didn't understand the plot This story but it was so cool seeing Daleks and explosions everywhere even now it's one of the best ever made.
15:13 that's very true. For me, this was my first classic story and now just over a year on, I've seen around 15.
Ben Aaronovitch writes the Rivers of London books, i knew on his bio that he had written for Doctor Who but I always thought that it was the revived series. I love the Rivers of London books and their mix of magic, science and police procedure 👍
Can't believe you've gotten through all the classics already, would be nice to delve into big finish just so that all the Doctors are represented in this series but now it's time for quite possibly the best Dalek episode ever.
Spawned an absolutely magnificent spin off series too.
Counter measures is soooooo good. I adore it.
The school headmaster was in pyramids of mars. Remembrance is one of my faves!
What’s better, ‘CARROT JUICE!’ or ‘UNLIMITED RICE PUDDING!’
Glad I didn’t vote for Daleks
This has to be favourite episode of doctor who. I think this story is the very early stages of the time war alongside genesis being the start of the time war. I have watched this so many times and it never gets old great writing and a great story
The 5th 6th and 7th doctor have a lot of references to the past
and set the grounds for the future
The Doctor met the Butler from Fresh Prince of Bel Air. What a crazy time
This is why I love Seven and that season of stories. It's so underrated. AND ACE IS A BADASS!!
My very first classic story and my favourite Doctor Who story ever, yes I think this is better than Genesis
This was my first ever old who episode, when I watched it when I was 6. I haved loved it and 7 ever since.
This is one of my favourite Dalek stories of the classic era along with Power and Genesis
I always love the imperial ones. Actually advanced and feel like they could actually conquer the world. (Unlike the dalek invasion of earth ones)
This is the first Classic-Who story I ever got on dvd. This is a great story and an amazing Dalek one at that.
Dude the Eastenders bit was class! :D
Just watching all these Dalek Dec vids. Brilliant. I inherited them all on dvd from an uncle but am struggling to keep focused already and I'm only on The Chase. Picked the best if out after seeing this list, so thanks feller. Tories v UKIP! Hahaha.Superb!
Are you going to cover the Dalek's Big Finish stories? If you dont have any there is a few on Spotify for free.
I just kinda wish the Daleks could have proper breaks in NuWho, we only seem to have caught a break from them in Season 10+6 but that was down to a cameo appearances ..they feel stale somewhat due to yearly appearances tho Revolution did spice things up a little
15:36 That ending is so creepy.
At 5:25 The Doctor is talking to Jeffrey from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. I never knew that was him until a year or two ago. LOL That's so cool is was in a classic DW story.
