      Coming back here after the Revolution of the Daleks review and it occurs to me that this basically feels like a Chibnall era script - not bad, but overstuffed with ideas, token character development, lots of travelling around for little reason, strange priorities with the general focus of what's important and what's not (i.e. we'll get Peinforte monologuing in a limo but not her backstory VS. we'll initiate a Dalek civil war but not really see much of it)

      @@ftumschk what you on about? It barely even registered as Dr.Who to me by this time in the classic era. I couldn't even sit through an entire episode even though I still tuned in to see what was getting ruined that particular week. The stories just got worse and worse from about the end of Peter's run and despite my feelings towards Colin's portrayal being quite positive, apart from the naff costume the show was just getting drowned in rubbish by the likes of JNT and co. to the point where it seemed like the production team were deliberately going out of their way to turn the programme into this absolute joke. Allowing for bad writing,bad acting and worse effects than even the worst of the 60s serials. I still don't understand why anybody can watch Sylvester McCoy's portrayal of the Doctor (god knows I've tried for years, and I'm Scottish)without just bursting out laughing and switching off. I've had to force myself to sit through his stories just to keep up with the continued tales of my favourite time lord, in fact I'm not that bothered by Jodie Whitaker as a lot of people are because IMO she head and shoulders above that horrible little twerp, not to mention pairing him up with Bonnie bastard Langford? But this has to be one of even his worst turning the Cybermen into complete and utter useless villain's that wouldn't even frighten the audience of Button Moon and having Ace take them to out as easily as she did the Daleks in that other pile of drivel. It would be great if they retconned the Timeless Children and at the same time wiped out the entire 7th Doctor era as well as sneaking back a few episodes to get rid of Bonnie bastard Langford as well. Oh well rant over for now.

    Personally, I'm betting on at least some Big Finish stories such as videos on Cyberman Season 1 and 2 (and likely Sword of Orion beforehand as it ties into it), Human Resources and possibly a second review of Spare Parts. I also think that we might see Cyberwoman from Torchwood since its a TV story and can be linked with both Doomsday narratively and the Lone Cyberman as a demonstration of accomplishing concepts.

      We're probably getting Spare Parts and maybe The Silver Turk from BF, Cyberwoman is an almost given (I don't know if we'll be doing Ghosts/Doomsday again), perhaps we'll get Blood of the Cybermen again to represent videogames. Perhaps Supremacy of the Cybermen as the official Cyberman 50th anniversary story as a dive into the comics. Cyberman Season 1 and 2 would be good to see reviewed considering I haven't actually heard them.

      @Jedi_Spartan 3 года назад +1

      @@benw4409 Yeah, I'm also sort of interested to learn where stuff like the Cyberman and Dalek Empire fall into the timeline as the former is most likely in the late 25th Century or in the far future as Telos has been destroyed by (I think) an asteroid but the Tombs are still intact which means that it's post Tomb of the Cybermen and yet Humanity aren't at war with them which means it's either before Earthshock or centuries after since in that episode Humans and several other species were preparing to ally with each other to stop the Cybermen. As for Dalek Empire, I have no idea other than it being post The Apocalypse Element (Main Range 16). No idea why I mentioned Dalek Empire other than the fact that both are free on Spotify along with Sword of Orion, Spare Parts and Human Resources.

    • @defrostedrobot77
      @defrostedrobot77 3 года назад +1

      The Cyberwoman/Lone Cyberman thing I kind of view as failing in different ways in that with the former you have an immediate fail with the concept being butchered from the off (I think it's fair to say that Trek did better with their sexy Borg than Who with it's sexy Cybermen regardless) whereas with the latter you have a concept that starts pretty strong but just gets worse as it goes along culminating in a real lame end. I'm not sure which is worse in terms of overall frustration.
      Incidentally, that whole thing makes me wary of the statement that "Chibs got the Cybermen right" because not only was that Cybermen an exception to the rule but that didn't even last long. And that's not even getting into the Cyberhead Drones or the Cyber Time Lords.

    • @Jedi_Spartan

      I think the reason there are a lot of weak cybermen stories is because most of the writers see them as a potential marketing tool to draw people in. Best example I can think of is the next doctor which literally teased itself dramatically in journeys end’s next time trailer as “the return of the cybermen”, then you watch the story & they basically don’t do anything. Then you have stories like attack of the cybermen & nightmare in silver, both written by people who love the cybermen but tell a really rubbish story.

      @@BH-98 I think you're absolutely right. I think in addition tho, many early stories didn't really "get" the Cybermen. It feels like writers thought of them as just robots and nothing more, I mean they didn't even show the conversion process until "Attack of the Cybermen". The new series at least seems to grasp that

    While this was my first cyberman story i ever saw, as i saw it when it first broadcast, and i did love them, i didn't like the cricket glove hands, to chunky. I get the premise that they wanted them to look for intimidating and powerful but the gloves make them look silly. Also then after seeing Earthshock why did they get rid of the fighter pilot suits. They look so much better than the boiler suits they used.
    Also i seem to remember that the Cybermen where never meant to be originally in this, and JNT wanted them added later down the line for the silver ann. Then the story was also held back due to strikes as well. Took me ages to figure out why the Cybermen wanted the statue or how it would be used.
    Still i love it though.

    It's spoilt by the profound silliness of having the Cybermen explode on contact with gold. The series consistently established gold as a weakness (in that it plated their breathing aparratus and in essence suffocated them). That's why the humans invented the Glitter Gun and why Voga, the planet of gold, was pivotal in the war that ended up with the Cybermen defeated. In Earthshock the Doctor attacks the Cyberleader with Adric's gold badge, by grinding it into his chest unit BUT It doesn;t kill him, only partyl disables him so they get his gun - and it takes several shots to destroy him. In this story you have Cyberment in one scene shown to be totally impervious to machinegun fire, but in the next, their armour is penetrated by a gold tipped arrow and they explode; you know, gold, known for being soft and unreactive! And even more silly is Ace destroying them with gold coins and a catapult. In Revenge of the Cybermen they are shown walking aorund without harm on a planet made of gold, and unaffected by gunfire (presumbly, the bullets also made of gold!). It males the Cybermen look stupidly weak.

    There’s an irony in the 25th anniversary story likely being the least talked about story of the show’s 25th series. Remembrance’s popularity is obvious, but you do hear more conversation about The Happiness Patrol and The Greatest Show in the Galaxy than Silver Nemesis. Maybe that’s just in my experience though.

    I don’t think you should have said that Lady Peinforte was ‘sucked into the nemesis for no apparent reason’ when it is patently clear that she runs and throws herself onto the statue as she can’t bear to be parted from it.
    Also you omitted the best scene in the story when Peinforte and Richard are given a lift by the American woman. The dialogue is sparkling. ‘Tis wise to inspect your crops at this time of year’ from Richard is a classic.

    Watched it tonight, It is a Fun, Non Stop Action Packed, Enjoyable, good, Episode with some Superb Performances, some Laugh out Loud moments ("Social Workers!") the Brilliant Chemistry between the Doctor and Ace, and a fantastic Redesign (the best looking IMO!) for the Cyber-Neomorphs, that, sadly, as well as being more than a little *unhinged* due to the Writer not being Familiar with Doctor Who and being rather too Ambitious with the Sub-Plots, it also Suffers from being in the Same Season as the *Masterpiece* (and *Actual* 25th Anniversary Episode) that is Remembrance of the Daleks, leaving it *very* underappreciated as, well, its still a lot of Fun! It also gave us the Lore that the Doctor is the White Guardian from the "Keys to Time" .

    The Cybermen are my favourite villains but the 80's design just really never worked for me. The RTD design didn't work either, as they were too robotic, too "Storm Trooper". For the Classic era, to me the Mondasian design is the best. For Nu Who, I'd say it is the 'Nightmare in Silver' design. Not in terms of what they can do, but in being visually streamlined.

I was really disappointed when I eventually got to see it again as for years before the VHS tapes began releasing the old tales, it was only available as a Target novelisation written really well by Philip Hinchcliffe who did a great job considering he hadn't worked on the show during Hartnell's era.

    Silver Nemesis was a mystery to me for most of my childhood. I knew there was a Seventh Doctor Cyberman story, I'd seen promo pics and heard about it, but I had never seen it. When I first watched it, I was a little bit disappointed, but I couldn't think of any scenes I particularly disliked. I think you nailed it on the head. Silver Nemesis is a fun watch with enjoyable characters and excellent performances, but very unfocused and disjointed. It's far removed from being the worst Doctor Who story or even the worst Cyberman story, but much like the majority of Series 12, it really needed to trim the fat to become a great story.

    I love McCoy, I love the Cybermen. And I'm a defender of some of both of their most maligned storylines. Not Silver Nemesis though. It's honestly embarrassing, even more so because of the quality of the stories surrounding it. It's literally Remembrance but we had that two stories previously and it's not nearly as good as it lacks the subtext, characterisation or strong production. The Nazis and the sorcerer character just add nothing, the Cybermen have no presence and even the legendary McCoy/Aldred combo can't save it. Fortunately we wouldn't have a Cyberman story quite this bad for a while.

      In terms of Cyberman stories that could reach this level I probably wouldn't have Nightmare in Silver or Dark Water/Death in Heaven on this tier since there's at least a couple more bits of interest. Maybe Next Doctor. The Timeless Children is a definite contender tho.

      Legendary? McCoy and Aldred? God only slightly more watchable than McCoy and Bonnie bastard Langford. He is what put Dr.Who into the cupboard for years so much so that they really didn't want him involved with the TV movie when it was made. And guess what? He ruins every bloody scene he is in in that and is probably the reason why the proposed series was shelved because people switched off in their droves before Paul Mcgann's excellent Doctor got going.
