    In this video I explore Catch me if you Can the movie that tells the story of Frank Abagnale and his five years of impersonating a lawyer, doctor, pilot and higschool teacher, while also forging and cashing in millions of dollars in checks. Frank’s story turned out to be an inspirational one as he redeemed himself and also turned out to be incredibly talented. In this video I discuss what I consider his strongest attribute, confidence. I discuss how confidence and overconfidence can help you achieve success, make money and get rich. How it is often seen in a negative way but how confidence and ego can actually be a positive.

He literally just defended Frank defrauding millions of dollars. The system is not as ridiculous as Frank's crime spree. If he wanted to, he could have done legit work. Like most criminals, he just wanted to steal. Frank had no problem stealing from the average person or putting people in danger to live his lifestyle. When you grow up, maybe you will stop looking up to criminals who went to prison. The entire point of the movie and Frank's story in the first place is that a life of crime is lonely, dangerous, and irresponsible. I always loved that line "I didn't cheat, I studied for 2 weeks and I passed." And of course nowadays there are so many systems in place to prevent fraud, use of false identity, and ensure you know what you're doing before you ever set foot in a place of work like an airline pilot, doctor, or lawyer, but its interesting to see the looser time of history not so long ago that gave rise to all these systems. The effort we have gone through trying to prevent another Frank Abagnale Jr. from happening again.

    For myself I go for honesty instead. I balance doubt with confidence. I got my newest job by just being absolutely blunt in the interview. "Did you do any research about our company history" -"No" "Not even a look on the website?" -"Only the online store for customers. But that's basically it"
    And when I was guided back out of the offices by one of them I took a deep breath, shook out my hands as if I just washed them and told the guy "I try not to be nervous during interviews, but sometimes they just get to me. I hope I didn't make an ass of me in there".
    They liked how honest I am. I can hold it together when it counts and not lose my integrity. I even had the balls to tell them that I had a second interview scheduled for a different company.
    Which seemed to send them into a little of a panic, because despite telling me they'd call me back within three days, they called that same evening, asking which place I liked better. And even then I still kept it blunt. I told them "The other feels more familial while your interview felt more professional. I don't have a favorite"

    Neither confidence, nor humility, is either a virtue or a vice. Whether they are good or bad depends on the context in which you feel them, which should be obvious, since they are both just feelings or perspectives on your level of ability. What matters is not whether you feel or act like you have an ability, primarily. What matters is whether you have that ability or not, and secondly whether you know it. If and to the extent that you have ability, it serves you to be confident, since in that case your feeling simply reflects reality. If you lack an ability, you should be humble. The virtue is objectivity.

    • @shaafalikhan3704
      @shaafalikhan3704 4 года назад

      Not necessarily, it depends on what kind of virtue ethics you follow.
      For example always speaking the truth is not a virtue in Aristotle's virtue ethics but it is according to Kant.

    • @eggory
      @eggory 4 года назад

      @@shaafalikhan3704 My understanding is that Aristotle's conception of honesty as a virtue was that you should tell the truth when and to the extent that it benefits your individual life; whereas Kant's idea of honesty was that you had to choose whether to tell the truth or not based on which would serve everyone better if everyone did it all the time. I agree much more with Aristotle's view, since it is my own life I'm primarily interested in, not the benefit of society for its own sake or the loyalty to an abstract notion for its own sake.

    • @shaafalikhan3704
      @shaafalikhan3704 4 года назад

      @@eggory Your understanding of Aristotle's virtue is correct, in his view our actions should be in a "golden mean" but Kant's idea wasn't of 'to tell the truth or not to tell the truth'. According to him, lying was always morally wrong no matter the circumstances. The theory of virtue which you cite as Kant's idea is called "Utilitarianism" in which virtue is an action which causes maximum benefit to the group instead of the individual.

But, you can be unsmart and still pass the bar...consider it highly specialized knowledge. Also, JDs dont do academic research, nor do they write dissertations...so...theres that. People who lack confidence are often drawn to literature that talks about the virtue of controlling their ego because this isn't something they have a problem with. I remember a bit in A Scanner Darkly, the movie version, where they talk about con men. They modified it a bit from the book to be more current but it made me think about the art differently. In it they bring up a guy famous for being a con man (probably based on the exploits of Abigail). But his real con was hat he never actually was a con man. He just wanted the fame of being a con man. So he went around talking about the cons and scams and writing books about his adventures getting famous. A kind of double con. He got the fame and glory and attention without actually having to break all the laws and do all the damage that a real con artist had to do.
    It really fits in a movie where a drug enforcer is so deep undercover that he is tasked with investigating the prime suspect... That is his own junkie alter ego, but since the system is so deeply set up to protect his identity he cannot reveal his conundrum to his superiors. A bit like if Batman is talking to Gordon about a case where all evidence points towards the culprit being Bruce Wayne. Batman has to investigate Bruce even though he knows fully well from the start that he did not do it.

    Confidence would be to be confident in yourself, not playing a role. Its like saying a actor is confident if he plays a confident character. Its much easier to act confident, than to be. As you would need to be totally ok whit being yourself, to be truly confident. Something he never was, that's why he ended up playing roles. Its almost the exact opposite, he hid himself. He did not believe in himself at all.

    it's not overconfidence, it is narcissism. the film does not describe the downsides and struggles of narcissistic people such as the lack of empathy, phases of incredibly deep depression, frequent existential fears over minor mistakes, and also destructive and unfair behavior.

    • @Alistair
      @Alistair 4 года назад +8

      do you mean lack of sympathy rather than lack of empathy? I feel like I can be fairly narcissistic, but I also seem to have high empathy. I actually read that some people have such high empathy that they become closed off to others (which I guess could present as narcissism) so as to not have to feel their pain.

    • @evindrews
      @evindrews 4 года назад +1

      I have to agree. And it's not like you're either narcissistic or not, personalities are a constellation map. From the movie he has a huge impression of his father. But I also have to say I think the movie does a great job. Frank struggles throughout, he starts out good at hiding it but slowly falls apart and slowly loses his game after his dad died, at least in the movie.

      A mistake severe enough can actually cause me to spiral. One mistake after the other, a narcissist will literally break if the mistake is bad enough.

    Oh, I bid farewell to the port and the land
    And I paddle away from brave England's white sands
    To search for my long ago forgotten friends
    To search for the place I hear all sailers end
    As the souls of the dead fill the space of my mind
    I'll search without sleeping 'til peace I can find
    I fear not the weather, I fear not the sea
    I remember the fallen, do they think of me?
    When their bones in the ocean forever will be
    Plot a course to the night to a place I once knew
    To a place where my hope died along with my crew
    So I swallow my grief and face life's final test
    To find promise of peace and the solace of rest
    As the songs of the dead fill the space of my ears
    Their laughter like children, their beckoning cheers
    My heart longs to join them, sing songs of the sea
    I remember the fallen, do they think of me?
    When their bones in the ocean forever will be
    When at last before my ghostly shipmates I stand
    I shed a small tear for my home upon land
    Though their eyes speak of depths filled with struggle and strife
    Their smiles below say I don't owe them my life
    As the souls of the dead fill the space of my eyes
    And my boat listed over and tried to capsize
    I'm this far from drowning, this far from the sea,
    I remember the living do they think of me?
    When my bones in the ocean forever will be
    Now that I'm staring down at the darkest abyss
    I'm not sure what I want but I don't think it's this
    As my comrades call to stand fast and forge on
    I make sail for the dawn 'til the darkness has gone
    As the souls of the dead live for'er in my mind
    As I live all the years that they left me behind
    I'll stay on the shore but still gaze at the sea
    I remember the fallen and they think of me
    For our souls in the ocean together will be
    I remember the fallen and they think of me,
    For our souls in the ocean together will be
