If you’re interested, go back to when Amira won Holland’s Got Talent at the age of nine , without having a single singing lesson.
I, with literally millions of others, have followed Amira in her remarkable journey since that win. She turned 19 a couple of weeks ago. Amira is not only a remarkable singer, she is a wonderful human being, & by following her journey, you will discover her amazing accomplishments, including the playground equipment she has supplied to schools unable to purchase themselves. I believe the are now 18 school that now have this playground equipment, all because of Amira Willighagen.
      Cheers Graeme

Definitely so watch the video ( for English Speakers) of her audition for Holland's Got Talent 2013 when she was 9 years old. Her raw voice before any singing lessons, she taught herself to sing opera arias from watching RUclips. The video is a delight. It's here on RUclips plus her semi and final performances which won her the competition.

Wonderful reaction, Jen. Amira at just 13 years old has such perfect control, pitch and sense of vocal dynamics that it appears all she has to do is open her mouth and the sound automatically pops out. As I'm sure you know it takes countless hours of practice to sing so effortlessly.
One other thing I noticed is how they also synchronized their vibrato.
One thing you noticed is that Corlea, who is fabulous in her own right was classically trained not as a mezzo but as a dramatic soprano but now mostly sings, everything but classical music.pop, rock, show tunes etc. She is definitely worth a listen also

Thanks Jen. Just love your incredible music knowledge & your ability to educate us mere mortals with in-depth comments that we can understand. More Amira please, & in particular, her performing “Ave Maria by Gomez at the Canisius Church’’ when she was 11 y.o. This is probably my favourite Amira performance.

Amira has sung this with other partners, where it is easier to hear the two separate voices. But the beauty of this performance is that they meld so well together, they really are working as a single entity. It's magical.
There are a lot of beautiful pieces that Amira has done which you haven't caught. I think you might be missing out on some delights.... Gesu Bambino, la virgine degli angeli . The Nessun Dorma she'd just sung before Corley joined her here. Beautiful sounds.
Corley has quite a repatoire, swing, jazz, rock/ pop. Some classical too.
There is a video of this performance with English subtitles, which is handy too.

Although opera singers do not usually use a microphone during a stage production, it is common when the arias are sung in isolation, especially to audiences much larger than those in most opera houses. Pavarotti has been known to have a bank of mikes. Bocelli uses them and so do singers at Rieu concerts. Singing without may be ok for audiences of around 2500-3000, not for 10,000 +.

Hello Jennifer . Excellent reaction , Very didactic like always . I only want to add . 1 Sissel also sang Sancta María with microphone 14 years ago . Mirusia with Andre Rieu also sang with microphone . Including Pavarotti sang with microphone . Out of the Opera the mayority of the Clasics singers sings with microphone .If you want to hear to Amira sings without microphone hear the recent Gesu bambino . 2 Consider that Amira here is only q3 years old singing at level of one very talented singer of more experience . Please , more Amira , never reacted to child Amira thd legend , with epic performances

Hey Jen. I have been following Amira for a long time. I think she has a very unique voice. This duet is an example of her tallent. She does not back down from the front of the duet either. In other words, a very strong voice! Singing for Andrea Rue at the age of 9? I think? Parents divorced and she moved to South Africa? What has happened to her? I have seen some of her work from there. But she needs to come to the states to show off her talent, I think? What say you?

Amira was 19 in March and has just finished school. She has taken a year out before going to university in South Africa where she has lived with her mother and brother since age 13.
Currently she is travelling with her mother in Europe and performing along the way. They are in Norway right now.
See her informal performance of Gesu Bambino on RUclips. It was recorded in an empty church over Christmas when she was visiting her father there. Her dad accompanies her on the organ. Beautiful acoustics in the empty church.

You have Angelina and Amira. How about the third of the triple A girls, Amira’s friend, composer, pianist, violinist on a ten million dollar Stradivarius permanent loaner, and now, after a year of study with the top teachers, conductor, Alma Deutscher. The most common reviews are of the third movement of her violin concerto and the SIRENS WALTZ from her sold out Carnegie Hall concert of her works. There’s also Amira and Alma singing the STEPSISTERS DUET from her CINDERELLA opera that sold out in San Jose.

Jen, if it’s any consolation French is my native language and the only words I actually hear in the performance are “sous le blanc jasmin”, “allons ensemble” in the chorus and “l’oiseau chante”. And I actually know that song having worked on it some years back. Never actually sang it with a partner (I’d probably sing the mezzo part now though I was once able to sing the soprano melody though never entirely comfortably as it was the very top part of my range).
As ever a lovely analysis, very interesting and enriching.

Ciao Jennifer !
    ruclips.net/video/c5MiyNTZKHY/видео.htmlsi=sIcmVnA4NGd-jqT6
Anche hà cantato, dieci giorni fà, l'aria più famoso di Catalani, Ebben ne andrò lontana... Un po' più difficile, a mio parere.

Jennifer! Well this is a huge step away from Valhalla Calling isn't it? I'm not super familiar with opera but this was interesting. As you note they're using mics ... I wonder if they had to knowingly hold back a bit on the normal operatic volume or if that was handled in the back by mixing. 🤔 And Jen! You don't know your French? Well you do know one word pretty well ... "l'oiseau" 😁 Anyway, definitely no low note practice in this one for you. But great reaction and analysis as always! 😊

Whilst this was very pretty I still think that I would love to hear Simone Simmons and Floor Jansen sing this as a duet, which I’m sure they would be able to do. Their duet of Stabat mater dolorosa amply demonstrates this. Just out of interest, my favourite performance of this is by Sabine Devieihe and Marianne Crebassa.

Not 5,000. Most of the large Opera houses hold 2,,500 to 2,800, the space is physically much smaller then an open space holding 7,,500 to 9,000 people that is not designed primarily for acoustics like an Opera house is.
Amira recently performed unplugged in her family's church in the Netherlands where she dropped in to see her father practicing on the organ, (he's the organist for the church) and performed Gesu Bambino standing there with her coat on singing her glorious, round sounding very long legato lines that Jen lives so much recorded on a cell phone in the acoustic perfection of the church.
Another is her performance of the Aria La Virgine deglii Angelie by Joe Green where she is standing back 3 to 4 feet from the microphone recording it for her Christmas concert in 2021. Another superb performance.

As far as the use of the microphone, stop and think for a moment. Any singer of any genre, including opera, if it's being recorded in any way (i.e. to be televised, radio broadcast, RUclips or otherwise) if there is no microphone only the audience present would hear it and you would be watching a silent video.

    • @sabineausmg9543

I absolutely agree. And there is another thing to consider: They are singing in a huge auditorium with almost 8,000 seats. Opera singers who sing without microphones usually sing in opera houses which doesn't seat more than 2,500 people in the audience.
