- I love bringing you some of the best opera recordings by some of the best singers both past and present. Today, I'd like to go back to a duet that's frequently used in film and tv, sung by the characters Lakmé, daughter of a Brahmin priest, and her servant Mallika, as they go to gather flowers by a river.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to The Flower Duet with Sabine Devieihe, Marianne Crebassa, Alexandre Tharaud and Les Siècles.

Have you heard Antonio Banderas sing the phantom of the opera? He does a pretty good job. Not asking you to showcase it. Just thought you might like it.
we ever going to get some dance gavin dance?
Would you be willing to do a video on Metalingus by Alter Bridge?
I know this is your true bailiwick, but how about a return to someone who began with classical music and singing opera but was too innovative and too much a free spirit to continue in that vein--BETH HART. You did one reaction of her phenomenal cover of the blues classic "I'd Rather Go Blind" with guitarist Joe Bonamasssa about 17 months ago. But a performance considered to be perhaps the greatest live rock / blues rock performance of all time--Beth Hart's "Am I The One" at the Paradiso in Amsterdam--requires your expertise. (Had Janis Joplin lived longer, she may have eventually achieved a performance such as this...): ruclips.net/video/hZG3MghkX3Q/видео.html
Hey Elizabeth, could you please review Procol Harum, song a Whiter shade of pale, sung by Gary Brooker. The one version in question is in Denmark 2006, 40 years after he first wrote and sung it. Gary just died a couple of months ago. He was accompanied with a orchestra and choir on this version outside under a tent. With thousands looking on. Thanks again Elizabeth and God Bless. I pray your husbands surgery goes well also. Best wishes
Crebassa has to be one of the most majestic mezzos ever. Such a deliciously dark tone and yet elegant and subtle.
Along with untold thousands of others, this introduced me to Marianne. Been hooked ever since.
Marianne has a such a beautiful, rich tone that separates her voice from most of the other mezzos that I have heard. I wish that I could describe things better , the way that Elizabeth does, which I think is one of her special talents and the one in particular that I have great appreciation for. She has a way of being able to verbalize her analysis of a singer's voice and technique(s) that helps people like myself to appreciate the music even more.
Like dark chocolate with butter rum
We came for Sabine, but we return for Marianne. She is Perfection.
Don’t know why, but this duet always hits me hard. It is like a master key to unlock my emotions, happy and/or sad. It is beautiful.
Same!!! ❤️❤️
Me too. I love another almost unknown composer and performer.. long gone. Louis Moreau gottschalk First rock artist in American history.
Lost genre of party music called cakewalks Straight from game before electricity. Louis Moreau gottschalk. My favorite is bananier if you're interested. So many cakeswalks to love. Also does classical of era if anyone is interested... Please comment. I might be lone ranger here. Died young. "Evening in the tropics" is most available
Indeed.
You know, sometimes people just say things that gives away their age range. 😊
This is my favorite version of this duet. I think it does make a difference that both singers are singing in their native language, the words and phrasing are crystal clear. I also feel this should be a soprano and mezzo duet. The deeper mezzo color is needed to contrast.
Yep....native language changes everything
I love this performance. Please, please, please keep up the opera analysis!
I fell in love with Marianne Crebassa as soon as she started singing.
THIS is THE best rendition of this piece I have EVER heard, and ever will.
Hi Elizabeth. Since you were good enough to explore the rock music I love so much, I thought I'd give this piece a try to understand what you love. This duet was truly amazing, light and ephemeral, and it felt like I was hearing butterflies. Very inspiring and calming at the same time. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Please continue to expose us to your elements, as you explore ours. Better understanding makes for a better world.
First time hearing this duo sing this, was almost tearing up, then suddenly “Wait, is that Gandalf?!?” It had me rolling. Thanks for the great analysis.
For those who had not noticed, EZ is a LOTR fan.
This is THE best performance of this that I've ever heard. Far too often, the soprano overpowers the mezzo to the point where you can hardly hear her. But these two play off each other perfectly, so that both parts can be heard clearly. By the way, speaking of *body language* -- it's funny that nobody seems to notice the point where Sabine for some reason mispronounces a word, which makes Marianne start to laugh.
Why doesn't anybody wonder about that? A few moments later, when Marianne is singing her line, Sabine looks at her and Marianne shrugs. Again nobody seems to notice that.
The reason: Well, if you understand French, instead of singing *"subite* s'empare de moi" (suddenly takes me away), she sings *"sa bite* s'empare de moi" (his cock takes me away), which makes Marianne start to laugh. And then, when Sabine looks at her, she shrugs, as if to say, "So we might have to sing it again. Not a problem...."
For some reason the thought of a couple of classy French opera singers being amused over a dick joke makes me happy.
@@LeftyConspirator : It often seems like French women, even *VERY classy* ones like these two, have a much healthier attitude toward sex than American or English ones, who somehow think sex is "dirty", not FUN.
Now that I read this and watched that moment, Sabine definitely does a “dammit, we’re gonna have to re-record” hair sweep.
@@themetalstickman : I'm always watching Marianne's facinating face -- and when Sabine looks over at her, she definitely shrugs it off, like she doesn't mind doing it again at all.
Both performers are wonderful by themselves, but together, these two are absolutely magical.
Delibes Flower duet is by far the most beautiful piece of opera ever written. I listen to it frequently and even have it set as my alarm on my phone so I can wake up with a smile.
I agree. Madame butterfly is close
I love this version because it sounds to my ears perfectly balanced between the soprano and mezzo lines. That’s what really elevates this performance for me. It sounds crystalline. And because one isn’t overpowering the other, I can focus on the sound of the duet, instead of being distracted by the louder voice.
As a young teen in the early 70's, I laughed uncontrollably at this 'old-fogey' music. 2 old women in need of a bathroom. Today it sends me into a fantastic feeling of excitement and rapture when I hear such a beautiful melding of 2 exceptional voices, in a very beautiful melody. Times change ☺
Our tastes in many things mature as we grow older.
When I was a child, the idea of eating fetid old cheese, on purpose, was something disgusting old people did.
By the time I was in my 30s, I was an aficionado on Brie, Camembert and Époisses.
Some people have culture thrust upon them, in their youth. Some people just have good taste from birth. But most of us have to mature into it.
@@Saffron-sugargood analogy
Ohhh thank you for this Elizabeth !!! As a French person myself, it’s always nice to see that some of our culture is appreciated by others. Lakmé is such a beautiful piece !
It’s going to date me, but when I was twelve and mostly into Broadway music, I (for some reason) bought an album by Lily Pons that included this and the Bell Song. It cemented my love for music.
My college music department required full years of Italian, French and German before we could finally learn to sing in English. I was never a professional, but my training was good enough to allow me to sing once at Carnegie Hall with the NY Philharmonic and soloists from the Bolshoi. An experience to never forget!
My favorite aria performed by 2 magical voices and as a bonus the emotion of a specialist who explains and vibrates in harmony: thrills guaranteed
The flowing, floating feel to this is magical! It totally captures the imagination.
I'm not an opera fan, but this is one of the most beautiful pieces of music with glorious harmonies! I have always imagined the voices dancing around one another
This is the specific performance I was hoping to see when I saw you were doing this duet. Love this performance.
Marianne Crebassa is a superb mezzo , Sabine is an exceptional soprano - the combination of the two has yielded the BEST performance of this duet anywhere on the Internet & I would even go far as to say, it's the best performance of this aria anywhere , anytime... EVER!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏💐💐💐
A joyful duet that always brings a tear to my eye. So beautiful.
I've loved this piece for 30 years. Thx.
I love these two singing this. Magic
I first heard this in the 80s, while watching the movie _The Hunger._ When it came out on VHS (I'm old), I rented it specifically to hear the song again, and find out the name of it from the credits. Slice of life before the internet and Shazam, folks.
I think I can relieve you of any regret you may feel at Flower Duet introduced by a movie soundtrack.
I don't recall ever hearing it until Nip/Tuck used it to magnificent effect. Since that moment I have sought out essentially every version available on RUclips.
The version being critiqued here in probably my favorite. Lest we forget, it was a rehearsal !
This particular duet has been a part of my little girl’s bedtime music collection since she was two. She is now five and knows it’s time to wind down after her bedtime story and this music begins. She LOVES this video. These two ladies knocked it out of the park with this performance.
Has to be the finest performance of duo des fleurs I've ever heard. Hard call but I have to say it. The contrasting combination here is just SO good and I cannot find a SINGLE flaw. The BEAUTIFUL flourishes in those quieter moments from Sabine! Oh my Lord!
They played this at my grandfather's funeral, it was one of his favorites. He listened to it from a Decca UK vinyl record that was worn and a little scratched, but it was still the most glorious music. I still have the set, but unfortunately no turntable to play it on, so I make do with the recording on RUclips. Thank you very much Elizabeth! 🥰❤🩹
One of the most beautiful melodies/arias I've ever heard. It's like two butterflies intermingling with each other in flight, off to some nectar-latte bar. This is why Elizabeth entranced me so much at the start. When in doubt, always go back to the source, be it metal, gospel, jazz... or opera.
I agree with the last statement. Your musical foundation is your source for refreshing your passion.
@@TheSeeking2know so true! Nicely put
That was wonderful. I really enjoyed Marianne's tremendous performance, she looked so relaxed
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I’ve wanted you to review this specific duo for a long time! Hope you can continue to cover opera more frequently!
I used to listen to the Opera Babes version of this song on repeat when I was on my first deployment. It was a way to feel peace in very ugly, dangerous world. Thank you, my friend, for helping me to appreciate an already beloved song even more!
I would love love love for you to do more operatic analysis simply to see the joy on your face!!
Hi Elizabeth, this is one of the most beautiful arias I ever heard, and easily one of the best duets in opera. Thank you, Elizabeth!!! 💙
I totally agree.
It looks like Elizabeth is really getting off on it. I'll have what she's having! I'm usually not into this type of singing but this was amazing.
The perfect Sabine duet to follow up is this, Kirby ruclips.net/video/mgEkbki1WS4/видео.html !
Celestial voices straight from heaven. I love this piece so much that I hear it all the time, never get tire. Leo Delibes, what a genius.
Exquisite! Thank you for sharing this masterful duet. So appreciate you and your gift.
I always loved the casual nature of this performance, even down to the conductor using a pencil as a baton!
OMG!! OMG!! OMG!! 🤩🤯😵💫 I'm so excited for this song. I've been waiting for it. ❤💗 This was one of the first operatic songs I was introduced to as a child by my grandmother. It resonates in my soul and just makes me stop and take a breath when I hear it. Music is medicine for the soul! Thank you Elizabeth for this one. ❤️
Thank you so much for this analysis. I heard this first on an advert for British Airways and was mesmerised. I’ve still yet to hear anything so beautiful..this version is first on every play list everyday. I’m blown away by the way Sabine sings such high notes and feathers the endings. Marianne’s voice just seems to give me a huge loving cuddle. I’m a lorry driver, I love all music from death metal to opera, but this video brought a tear to my eye. I don’t speak French so to finally have some context is wonderful. I love your channel Elizabeth, your knowledge and love of music really makes your videos a high light of my week. BRAVO for making education a joy.
Ooo, another opera analysis, can’t wait!
I hope you delve into why duets work, how soprano and mezzo soprano can mesh simultaneously and how some other pairings might not. How to sync vibratos etc etc I’m so fascinated
Yes, yes, yes! These are very important points. I hope she touched on them.
Omgosh, yes!!! This is my favourite version of this duet! Can't wait to hear the full analysis. 🙂
This is my favourite rendition of it too! I love it so much.
YES! Had suggested this and am delighted to see you dive into it. Thank you. Your analysis provides the insight to why I find it so appealing and now I appreciate it all the more. I feel blessed. More opera please.
Thanks for this. I love this song and for me this is the best version ever of it. I watch/ listen to this video often. The ladies compliment each other so well.. it is just pure beauty.
I haven’t listened to a lot of opera but I love this piece and this performance in particular.
This duet is a favorite of mine, too. It never fails to make me catch my breath and give me goosebumps. It has always made me think of two birds in flight, swooping through the air, twirling around each other over a meadow of flowers.
It's like being in Paradise ... Blending colours with voices. And that mezzo is just Ahhh .
I love Your natural reaction . Pure Joy.
Marianne is such a powerhouse!
Sabine has sung with Lea Desandre, too. Also superb.
I agree :)
I always thought that the rendition sung by Anna Netrebko and Elina Garanca can´t be topped. Now I´m not so sure any more. These two fine singers match perfectly. Thank you very much for introducing me to them!
I feel exactly the same way.
For me this is definitely a better version.
You picked my favorite video of the Flower Duet. The first time I heard Marianne Crebassa sing I became a fan.
Absolutely fantastic! I've been a rock and medal head for years. Thank you for giving me a chance to hear and learn about something in your wheelhouse. It would be great to see some more videos like this with you translating the AWESOM singing/story of the song.
I feel in love with the flower duet back in the 80s when British Airways uses it in an advert. It is hauntingly beautiful.
Yes yes yes!!!!! It’s my fave!!! What a thing to wake up to!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
One of my favourite recordings of this song…
I don't know how many times I've listened to these two beautiful voices dance around each other. There's such beauty and emotion to the piece and they do it amazingly. It never fails to move me, sometimes to peace, sometimes to tears, sometimes to pure joy. It's simply an incredible piece performed simply incredibly.
I've watched your analysis of them several times, as well. I love, in all your videos, how obvious your joy and appreciation for music, in general, and for excellent voice, in specific, shines. That plus your obvious expertise make your videos the only reaction videos I consistently watch. Thank you for them!
Thanks for the class in opera singing. My first exposure to opera was when I at 16 went to visit my sister in Germany. She sent me off for 10 days with a friend of hers for a trip through Austria, Switzerland and Italy. In Rome, we saw Aida performed in the ruins of the Roman Baths. The stage was so huge they brought 2 chariots drawn by 4 horses onto it. It was truly memorable.
I actually heard this duet for the first time when it accompanied the love scene between Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon in the movie "The Hunger". It stayed with me for years.
My favorite opera! Had the pleasure of seeing this rarely performed opera when I lived in NYC. It was a wonderful birthday gift I will never forget. The rose on my box seat from my lover, then the opera performed by the Metropolitan Opera. A treasured romantic moment.
YEEESSSSSS my repeated prayers (comments) requesting this have been answered!!!!
This has been something of an eye-opener for me. I used to think opera was mostly vocal acrobatics and showing off - it never really worked for me anywhere nearly as well as instrumental classical music.
Having been following The Charismatic Voice and several other vocal coaches (and opera singers) who react to metal for a couple of years now, I'm seeing things differently. One very clear example of this is the moment where I thought "ooh, nice decrescendo". Immediately after I had this thought, you said "beautiful decrescendo!"
I thoroughly enjoyed not only your captivatingly enthusiastic analysis, but also the duet being performed by two remarkable singers.
So, um. Thank you, Elizabeth.
(Also, a shout out to Julia Nillon, Beth Roars, Anna Vaskelainen, Rebecca Vocal Athlete and Maggie Renée, who are some of the other vocal coaches / singers whose content I regularly view.)
I've always loved this piece. And I never cry during it. I just happen to get something in my eye at that point in time is all...
Oh good...this has been a favorite video of mine for a long time. It will be great to hear your analysis!
I have watched this video of this performance probably 100+ times and I’m always amazed someone on the street is just walking by, likely completely unaware of the masterpiece unfolding within that room.
I’ve often seen short clips of this absolutely delicate and wonderfully interlaced dual vocalists. Thank you SO much for posting it in its entirety. It is TRULY masterful in its execution, from the voices to the orchestration! Your insights have given me even MORE appreciation for the piece, for which I’m grateful. I love your channel, and I especially love watching your reactions which ALWAYS gives to me an even greater appreciation of songs that I know and love. YOU ARE AMAZING! Thank you for doing what you do!
Awesome! This is by far my favorite aria. For me, this is the only opera that takes me somewhere, transcending everyday mundanity. 👍
Thank you so much for this reaction. Sabine Devieilhe is just the current best French singer !
I really love when you analyse opera
More Opera and Orchestra reactions please, awesome work Elizabeth !!!
So refreshing! Thank you! ❤️
Beautiful. Thank you for doing this.
Quelle harmonie!Les musiciens ensembles sont certainement conscients du niveau exceptionnel avec ces deux interprètes.Le chef maîtrise cet instant.
Ahhh... Vocal Engineer Elizabeth fires up the Opera Train... All on Board, all on Board! ❤ ❤ ❤
I'm so in, that this is an old sugestion of mine! 😉😎
Welcome on Board,Sir 😀
So, now that I've heard the uncommented version, I'm trying to imagine how that would sound with Elizabeth's involvement ❤
@@joergojschaefer3521 Well, that piece has a notable defect: too short. There is Lea solo with the first metal song ever, though...😏
Wait...There was metal before Elizabeth's TCV channel? ummm... almost can't be... 😉 😉
YES! Love this rendition. Can't wait to see your analysis.
This is one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever heard. Any time I need a lift, I listen to it. Thank you for the video.
I didn't know I know this song.
Beautiful!👏
Omg omg omg, this is my all time favorite Video in RUclips of ALL time i watch it like twice a week since more than two years now! *-*
Damn! That’s just glorious! I liked what you said about how it surrounds you with colors. As a painter I speak that language but this piece moves me.
Thank you for the breadth of this channel and the passion you embody and bring to us. I love the variety in the genre that you reveal to us. 🥰
I love the variety of music you bring to us Elizabeth. This one today had been really beautiful. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing, Elizabeth. It was beautiful.
That was so beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful! I really enjoyed that.
I love all this detail! You bring a deeper appreciation to a song I love with my whole heart. Thank you.
The flower duet was used as background muisc for a TV ad for British Airways in the late 1980's. It was the first time I and many other people heard it.
A wonderful rendition of a beautiful peace, indeed. I love this duet, and loved to see you nerding about it.
Thanks for sharing a piece of your heart with us.
Love this one so much!!! It's on my own classical playlist and I play it every time I put on the playlist.
Thank you Elizabeth. What a wonderful reaction ❤🙏❤
I could listen to you forever. Thank you for all you do.
Thank you for this performance! Such a beautiful duet!
Yes! I wanted to suggest this recording, I believe I may have somewhere too. I'm glad you're featuring it. It's a wonderful performance.
very refreshing to see opera...so beautiful. 👏 bravo
GOD! I love this piece... I'm so happy you did this!! 🥰
I used to fly several times a week for work, always British Airways. Guess what song was playing non stop in the aircraft cabin as you waited for taxi and take-off. It says a lot for the quality of the piece that I still enjoy it hugely.
And on radio and TV advertising! I first heard it when I was schoolboy. I was "forced" to go to my sister's school concert by my mother. Most of it was as dreary as I feared it would be, but then three girls came on stage. One sat at the piano and the other two shared a microphone. "Oh, no!" I thought and sank down in my seat to suffer through it. But then they began the "chorus" of the Flower Duet, accompanied by the girl on the piano. I honestly don't remember how good the girls were - but they must have sung largely in tune, because I had perfect pitch and loathed out-of-tune singing. But they sounded magnificent to me. I've never forgotten that perfornance, or the Flower Duet! 🙂
Well it was used by BA for their adverts so it wouldn't be that surprising for them to play it on the plane.
I discovered this one couple of years ago and love listening often. It gives me goosebumps every single time!
I love all this detail! You bring a deeper appreciation to a song I love with my whole heart. Thank you. ❤️
Thank you..I adore this duet. They are amazing!!
It really takes a special talent to bring a gem like this to such a large audience. Liz's genuine passion for music is so great, she can really project it.
Seriously what a delight, what a fantastic journey!!
INCREDIBLE!! Sooo beautifully sung together and the orchestra of course. It's always educational hearing your expertise, thank you.
Also thank you for including a link for the full uninterrupted version, guess I better get the tissues ready, think my eyes might start leaking... who am I kidding, happy tears will be streaming.
Love your channel. Only a few can educate, analyze and appreciate as you do. I cry every time I hear this duet. Thanks for introducing me to this glorious version.
Oh indeed, once the song proper began I, recognized it. Happy to see more opera on the channel, this is really beautiful, no reason one can’t enjoy metal and opera! Seeing your love and passion for the genre really makes it a pleasure to watch your analysis.
