    If you want to learn the parts of letterforms and the terminology used, check for books on typography and typeface / font design. -- baseline is the bottom of the capital and lowercase letters, where things sit, the line you write on with ruled notebook paper; x-height is the height of most lowercase letters, the top of the x; ascenders, the parts of lowercase letters that go above the x-height; descenders, the parts that go below the x-height; (not tails, though tails are common terms, informally) cap-height, the height of the capitals, often not the same as the ascender height; there are plenty of other terms too.

    Just found the channel and enjoying the content! Appreciate the review of each of these fonts too. One font that I've been using in some projects is Atkinson Hyperlegible. With a nod towards accessibility, I appreciate the aim of both legibility and readability. For someone with poor eyesight, it's easy on my eyes to have the curved terminal on the "l" and serifs on the "i" and "I". It may not have the large variation of weights and styles but it helps to keep the typography simple.

    Hey Mizko, ty soo much for ur content. I started in the field of UX/UI Design approx. 4 months ago and ur videos are always a very good go-to for me when tackeling new challenges at work. Currently a system i am working on is using Roboto (systemwide). What do you think of the font and is it good to have the same font everywhere or should it be combined with others? Again Thanks a lot! Keep up the great work!
    Greetings from Germany =)

    • @Mizko
      @Mizko  2 года назад +1

      Awesome Chief Bacon! As mentioned Roboto is a great system font for Android. There is no need to change it if that's what the organisation wants to use. As you become more experienced, you'll learn to manage stakeholders and introduce new fonts system-wide. But as you're just starting out, sometimes it's best to go with what's already working. Just learn the ropes of the game.

      Hey @@Mizko thx a lot for the answer =) yea unfortuantely we are using Roboto for both, Android and IOS which made me sceptical. But yes, i agree regarding "going with what's already working". But then again when trying to change the Type-system for a whole software later on, won't that cause a lot of issues regarding spacing/breaks looks of features?

    Thank you for teaching me about x-height; it’s good to know there are some relatively straight forward and measurable characteristics to consider when choosing the right font. Naturally I arrived at Inter while looking for an alternative to SF Pro that I could use for desktop publishing. At least it appears sufficiently legible on paper as well. But I have wondered about whether even SF Pro Display being a “display” font is the correct tool for the job. In any case, I can see there are a few inter fans here as well 👍 I am morbidly curious about the engineering process and mindset that goes into making something like Inter. A friend of mine one alluded to the use of adversarial networks in the course of typography but I wouldn’t even know where to begin. Apple gives me the impression that they’re very proud of SF Pro, so I can’t help but wonder 😂

    The problem with Open Sans is too much personality that it loses symmetry and becomes clunky. Inter is still the Helvetica of UI design. For projects that require font with personality that is more apparent, I go with Libre Franklin. Gorgeous numeric characters too which is excellent for dashboards. Another consideration I make when choosing is distinct but subtle difference in weight between 400-----------500-------600----------700. I like my 500 closer to my 600 than 400 are to 500 or 600 to 700. if that makes sense

      UX is logic and strategy. Ui is very creative and artsy.
      I think UX is probably more suitable for you in terms of personality.
      But also depends if you wanna work in big or small company. In smaller company from my experience you need both with the emphasis on UI. I’ve worked with a few UX designer who isn’t so great at UI so they got let go pretty quick.

    I'm looking for opinions on scripts as display fonts, but I find almost nothing, mostly "Top 10 beautiful scripts" but no opinions on pairing. I'm using a tutorial for a freelance site to create a freelance site targeted at floral or botanical type jobs, so I figured that might lend to the aesthetic. All I can figure, is to use it very sparingly & large H1 sizes, & perhaps my body font to use H2 or H3 & under, strongly leaning toward Dexa Round. Any opinion on Script + Body pairs & why?

    thank you mizko for all those crusty tips, you used a lot fontshare, i saw it's free but not open source, are there any limitation or we can use it normally ?

      Open source means people are allowed to change and alter the font. That’s obviously something Fontshare does not allow.
      If you just want to use fontshare fonts for personal and commercial use, that’s totally fine.

    you have mentioned all the fonts which are sans serif. Isn't the serif or cursive font required for the design purpose?

      Probably not that much for UI design? User interface design means you are dealing with all of the smallest clickable elements of the site. Not the main content or information of the site.

      You don't have to stick with the default letter spacing. You can adjust this.
