The real fast lens' advantage that the f4 lens cant beat and will always lose is when shooting moving object/action/performances. One stop iso is huge in terms of noise difference.
This video aged well. I just picked one up in excellent condition with six months warranty for less than $500 for a used 5DII I also picked up recently. Amazing value for what that camera/lens combination offers for photography.
I got in a 24-70 F2.8 and the 24-104 F4 at the same time for my 6D. Tried both, the 24-70 zoom range was just wide to "a little closer" and as I was looking for a "Swiss Army lens" the 24-105 stayed and the 24-70 went back. I can see the appeal for the 24-70 F2.8 for say wedding folks but for everything else...the 24-105 takes the win. F4 isnt really an issue either when modern cameras almost have unlimited ISO to help out.
Bought this lens in recent weeks, although I wanted the 24-70mm/2.8 L with macro but I didn't want to shell out the extra cash. Got mine for around $450. I blew the dust off my Eos Elan IIE from my University days in order to get back into it. Wanna get a 50mm/1.4, then I think I'm good until I'm ready to buy a nice digital body, thanks for the pat on the back in terms of my purchase.
The 50 1.8 is a cheaper alternative and takes great shots . I sold it and ended up getting the 1.4 later thinking there would be a substantial difference however it’s not as big a difference in quality as I thought it would be. I just picked this lens up and it’s my first l series so entry level into it is ok. I am a seasoned portrait photographer but it isn’t my main job.

I used a Canon EF 17-40mm ultra wide angle for several years, but looking for a 24-105 to add to me bag, the EF 17-40mm is good in industrial work application where I need a wide shot up close, I use a 6D body with these lens
Great review. This workhorse lens has worked its way back into my camera bag. On my Komodo and Z-Cam, it’s such a versatile lens, and bc of its zoom range, it often saves time on shoots where there’s no opportunity to switch out primes. But on my Canon M6 ii with a 0.71 Speedbooster, it’s really something else. First of all, the Speedbooster, as a focal reducer, takes the crop factor from 1.6x to close to full frame at 1.1x, and makes the lens closer to a true 24-105 again, as well as turning it into an f2.8. A full frame look on a small, walk-around aps-c $900 camera? I think that’s awesome.
@@kainoao2020 Full frame image from a full frame camera; apsc such as 80D does not work so well with some EF glass. For example, 85mm 1.8 works more pleasing with full frame.
Personally I never want or use viewing angles wider than 35 or 40mm on full frame so the 24-105 has been great on my crop body. The FF equiv is perfect for me since it would cover 36 to 157.5mm or 55 degree horizontal angle of view to around 13 degrees. The center sharpness is accentuated on the crop bodies by dropping the softer edges on the first edition whereas the second has reduced peak sharpness in the center but is more evenly sharp across the entire frame. As long as the weight and size are no problem, its a great do it all lens for aps-c and 35mm frames.

You will get strong distortion on f 24 - 35 focal range. Bokeh is pretty ugly and it looks cheap and non cinematic. This lens is also dark, closer to like 5.6 compared to other f4 lenses.
Nice! Hello, I have a plan to buy a lens for my canon 6d. Could you recommend 24-105 F4 or 17-40 F4 prefer? in terms of sharpness and softness of the image?
Both will be around the same image quality. It’s really dependent on what you’ll use it for. Do you need the super wide angle or something like real estate or architecture? If not, personally I think the 24-105 is the way to go
IIRC I paid c. EUR 1200,- when it was just released - paid another EUR 250,- on an IS repair with CPS - that did not fix the issue, however I agree it is a good lens. Everything this gentleman just said in this video is true. Simply without a doubt the best lens that canon offers. Great job very informative video 👍 Thank you !!
I can think of one downside to this lens: big and heavy. However, I do use it almost exclusively on my Canon 6D. On my Canon RP, it is too big for the mirrorless camera. So I use the Canon f3.5-5.6/28-135 IS instead.

Personally, investing in full frame lenses makes more sense to me, since you'll be able to use them if you ever upgrade to a full frame camera. You can use them on the APS-C sensor as well!
Nice video with good information for all the newbie photographers, the L glass is nice and a zoom is a go to for many jobs, however I use a Tamron 28 to 75 which is 2.8 all the way through and the reason I do that is because I like to keep money in my bank not in my camera bag so I don’t like to shell out all my hard earned cash on the most expensive lenses, if I can use Tamron!
That was the first lens I bought to go with my 10D because I couldn't afford anything better. It's a great lens, but it kind of needs the extra aperture because it hasn't got IS, so you'll need the extra light just to deal with camera shake. That being said, there's a reason why it's so well-loved and I'm probably going to miss it some days. But, having switched to a FF sensor and having IS on most of my other lenses, it's kind of hard to justify keeping it around.
I don’t know why anybody would be excited to be limited to F4? For all the various photos it covers? What about bokeh? shallow depth of field, throwing subjects out of focus on purpose. Selective focus to only have the subject in sharp focus and everything else fall out of focus on purpose! It seems like being stuck at F4 although convenient, really limits your creative possibilities because you can’t go down to a very shallow depth of field which is a quite a pleasing look!
Really awesome review! I have a question, how is the Autofocus noise? Is it loud enough to be picked up by a mic mounted on top, like a vlog style thing?
I'm shifting from a C300 to Sony's A7s III, sold all the gear except the 24-105 L USM II. With Sony's low light capability, I'm very tempted to just keep the 24-105 and using Sigma's adapter...any thoughts on viability of that plan. I've loved that 24-105 and hate shelling out big for a 24-70 Sigma or Sony 24-70 when I have a great lens sitting here.
We shot Sony for year but almost always paired it with Canon glass. It’s definitely a viable option, unless you need AF. It’s been a while since we’ve used Sony’s so hopefully that’s improved, but it was pretty bad before
I have used the RF 24-105. It’s a very nice lens. If having control rings is important than it would be a good option. At GearFocus we are all about saving money though. So for us, the advantages of the RF version are out weighed by the cost.
I often read that it is a problem, when the lens is zoomt in that the tubus is zomming in or out by it's own if the camera is not perfectly horizontal. Is that true?
That sky shot at 3:00 is insane. Either that photo is edited, or that is one hell of an amazing sensor. Been using this lens for 10 years, and yeah the aperture is the main issue, followed by sharpness and distortion. Having a prime lens like the thrifty 50mm f1.8 is a incredibly complementary lens, at least for photography.
It’s edited, but only in Lightroom. There’s no compositing or photoshopping done. I believe my settings were F/4.0, ISO 3200, Shutter 15 or 20 seconds. Shot on the EOS R.
@@GearFocusdo you use the zoom as well or using it causes unclear shot i mean i know it's 24-105.. would the image or video be compromise if i did 35mm or even 50mm? or i can take sharp crisp results ?

The original V1 version of this lens is not very good lol. It’s extremely soft and doesn’t render much detail. I had the original and the v2, the v2 was much much sharper.
Might consider this lens after your presentation. My go-to lens for photos and vid work is my Canon 16-35 1:2.8 L II. A great lens and I rarely use anything else unless necessary. Only issue is a slight distortion around the edge when shooting wide. It can stretch the subject at the extreme edges of the frame.
If you frame it properly, you can get some nice wide looking angles at 24mm. There are times where I wish I could go just a little wider so if I were you, I’d keep that 16-35.

Selective focus to only have the subject in sharp focus and everything else fall out of focus on purpose! It seems like being stuck at F4 although convenient, really limits your creative possibilities because you can’t go down to a very shallow depth of field which is a quite a pleasing look!
photography isn't all about bokeh imo
Really awesome review! I have a question, how is the Autofocus noise? Is it loud enough to be picked up by a mic mounted on top, like a vlog style thing?
We’ve never noticed it 🤷🏻♂️
I'm shifting from a C300 to Sony's A7s III, sold all the gear except the 24-105 L USM II.
It’s been a while since we’ve used Sony’s so hopefully that’s improved, but it was pretty bad before
@@GearFocus Well, AF is a must, I wonder if anyone has tried the MC11 with the 24-105 second generation (both adapter and lens bios updated)
Have you tried the new rf lens? I haven't seen a comparison, but the RF is tempting
I have used the RF 24-105. It’s a very nice lens. If having control rings is important than it would be a good option.
At GearFocus we are all about saving money though. So for us, the advantages of the RF version are out weighed by the cost.
Hi! Great video. How would this work on a Canon 90D (crop sensor)? And how does it compare to a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens?
I bought this Canon 24-105 L IS USM lens on my Canon 90D.
Hello where I can I get this lens for 300 to 500dollars am seeing it on Amazon for 700 tops
Are you reviewing the second model?
Planning on buying the Pocket 4K with the Metabones XL and this lens. Anyone using that combo?
I’ve seen loads of people doing that. Gets that extra stop of light past f4 too!
Curious to see this lens on the new viltrox ef to rf speedbooster paired with the R5
I often read that it is a problem, when the lens is zoomt in that the tubus is zomming in or out by it's own if the camera is not perfectly horizontal. Is that true?
The only times that happens to me is when the lens is vertical. But that can be fixed with the tightening of some screws
@@GearFocus Thank you for the quick answer.
i am so lucky i just got into videography and my sister just happen to have this lens with the 80D laying around xD
Was it hard to do astrophotography with this lens due to the aperture?
Not at all. The ISO gain on modern cameras does a pretty good job of reducing noise! Cheers!
so have you tried the USM II version
We have not used the USM II version. this is a version I. We are working on getting the RF 24-105 in to do a comparison.
is it good also for product videography ?
Yes. Absolutely! I use it all the time
@@GearFocusdo you use the zoom as well or using it causes unclear shot i mean i know it's 24-105.. would the image or video be compromise if i did 35mm or even 50mm? or i can take sharp crisp results ?
@@Abdulrahman-tc6vq you will get sharp shots regardless of which focal length you are using.
@@GearFocus gotchu, i am trying to shoot this beverage energy drink commercial getting into color grading and transitions.. i have so much to learn .. sometimes my questions tend to come off really dumb for some people yet you were really helpful ♥️. Thanks man you deserve 1M subs already 🤍
@@Abdulrahman-tc6vq thank you! We hope to continue to educate and provide a great service in the future. And also, 1M subs would be nice ;)
Hi! Is this lens still relevant today? Is it a good pair with my Canon EOS 90D? I'm thinking of buying one. Thanks for the help!
-From the Philippines
I just used mine yesterday! It’s still a great lens!
Is this v1 or v2? Which one should I go for?
This is version 1
Nice 👍i us eos rf 24-70mm 2.8
Thats another great lens!
What is the sensor size of your BlackMagic?
The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K is a Super35 sensor
I heard that this lens IS can make noise - anyone having experience with this, when using external audio(shotgun+Microport fx)?? i have a canon c100ii
Informative🙏
On the GH5 with the Metabones Speedbooster XL it becomes an f2.5
Can this lens alone be used for weddings without anything else
I do it all the time!!
Is this lens good on an eos rp?
It gets used on my EOS R all the time, so I'd say the RP will be just fine
@@GearFocus ok, thanks. I got the adapter and found this lens for really cheap, and that was the last thing holding me back from buying it
Is this lens as sharp as an iPhone lens in daylight photography
iPhones and dedicated cameras honestly cannot be compared. With that being said, this lens will look better than anything you’ll shoot on an iPhone.
Hell I think its great lens for what it is. Price and Quality Ratio is high. Do you think it stacks up well vs a Sigma counter part?
It’s tough to say. Would depend on the scenario. FWIW, we use the sigma 35 F1.4 as a secondary lens to this one.
The original V1 version of this lens is not very good lol. It’s extremely soft and doesn’t render much detail. I had the original and the v2, the v2 was much much sharper.
Totally agreed
Is this worth it if I see one for $350?
We would say so!
Would you recommend this for handheld shooting with a C100 Mark 1? Great video btw :)
Yes we would! The IS makes handheld a lot easier
You mentioned you can find this lens on line for 4 or 500? We’re everything I see on this lens is 9 to 1000$
Are you looking at the RF mount or EF mount version?
@@GearFocus EF L series
@@stephenbowden9843 make sure those prices are for just the lens. They go for $300 all day long
@@GearFocus That’s simply not true-send me the link
I have a real problem with this lens...it looks like all my pics are not sharp...???
Where exactly did you see this lens for $500?

I agree!!! if you have a sigma art 18 35 sell it and thank us later!
Not really a great photography lens though, IMO.... Definitely seems nice for video though
*Hi*
I think it's one of the worst lens I've ever owned. Sigma and Tamron so much sharper
A few people sans feet in some images….
Can you give me some lens please
"$4 or 500 online." ha ha. not in 2023.
