Yeah, only way we'd get stuff like 10:58, where Flare pretends not to know the difference between a CRT and a flatscreen and Noel pretends to explain it to her, with a condescending "Flare-san" at the end of each line... just solid situational comedy that depends on playing off a movie in front of everyone
@@g_jansol3116 Newtypes are a concept explored in the Universal Century timeline of Gundam. They're basically evolved humans that are able to psychically communicate with one another which begin to be born as a result of humanity leaving earth to explore outer space. There's some more nuace to the topic beyond that but that's the basic explanation.
You really love them movie night streams, huh? The Shining is an absolute classic, I'm not surprised it's famous in Japan as well. It's often said that it has elements of several genres, including a dark comedy. Surprisingly Stephen King (author of the original book) was famously unsatisfied with Kubrick's movie adaptation and there was a TV special made later, closer to what King wanted. It's nowhere near as iconic as Nicholson's performance here, but it does have its moment too. It's a bit funny how Flare and Noel were surprised that it's not super violent. I guess psychological horror isn't what they are used to. But it really spoke to them on an emotional level because of that. To say that the movie has an inherent "warmth" is so interesting.
Unfortunately it's not a good idea to watch something like the Shining with other people. It's the kind of movie where you slowly get absorbed by the atmosphere and the characters, and when jack goes full psycho, it's terrifying. The long shots are the best example of this. When you're watching that scene with the tricycle alone, just following the kid through the hallways, and suddenly the girls appear, everything seems wrong, and you get this rising feel of dread. In a group it's just laughable.
@@ryngobrody1627 Now don't get me wrong, I do understand Kubrick's cinematography and the building sense of dread and the slow blurring of the lines between what is real and fake, but... The Shining _has_ comedic elements. It's not really a complete horror movie and it isn't completely a thriller either. The "Here's Johnny!" line is not meme'd for being scary, you know? It's very corny. I admire anyone who can be absorbed into the atmosphere deeply enough to be scared by that, but Nicholson was really hamming it up in the third act. The way he offed the concierge was really comical, like something out of a later Friday the 13th sequel. Now that is not to say that there wasn't really unsettling stuff. The twins are a good example that you brought up. I think what unsettled me the most were just the actual marrital arguments though. Too real. Nicholson losing his mind was always terrifying not because he became psycho, but because this was always inside him. The mansion just dragged it out of him.
It's funny that they saw warmth in the movie, since the reason Stephen King hated this adaptation was because he saw the exact opposite in it. He felt that the movie was out to hurt people, probably because the book spent more time making you sympathize with Jack, making the book more of a classic tragedy. And ice cream grandpa actually managed to survive and save the wife and son in the book, so his death would be a stab at anyone who read the book first.
Noel: if Flair starts doing ASMR, I'm done for! Steve Irwin: Croiky! This woild Danchou has set a clevah trap for her Dahk Elf prey! But unfortunately for this Sheila, Flair was too dense to pick up on her reverse psychology, and those Knoight Ears are gonna go untingled for the rest of the evening!

Noel mentions Gundam: It goes over Flare's head. Flare mentions Resident Evil: It goes over Noel's head. A honey trap pretty monster lady shows up: Both back on the same page.
From this day forth, I'll refer to Mr. Halloran as Ice Cream Grandpa. Also, it would've been way more interesting if Korone was reacting to it. Her movie commentary is always top-notch.
This is another movie I recommend reading the book of. There's plenty of matching scenes, but there are just enough changes that it makes it a different experience. I won't spoil what those changes are. You should go find out! Not a fan of reading? Get one of audio books to listen to instead~ Also, thank you, Peko Subs! These highlights are great~ Also also, "Pooh-san" scared the hell out of me when I watched this movie as a kid. ^^;
The Shining is very hard to understand. The movie also takes a different approach to the book. Both are good but the movie should be viewed as a standalone thing.
No, I get the impression they're a bit on the younger end so all they know is jump scares. Not a slow build up of suspense or eeriness or chills that was more common in old horror.
I just think that as a psychological horror is pretty dull, I love that genre and I've seen good ones, but this just seems as a classic movie, that's it, it hasn't aged well.
The way they have the right/left ear dedicated to hearing each others voices is kinda teetee It's like they're sharing a earpiece to watch the movie together
