Jomboy: "why are we teaching catchers to risk serious injury in order to trick old men?"
Perfect encapsulation
Yes, make baseball even softer. Surely it will fill the stands!!!
@@Laremythe cardinals just lost their best position player so far this year. That’s what’s not going to fill the stands. But glad you used your brain when you typed that out!
Respect trev for putting his body on the line for the pod 🙌🙌
I can't believe this man burned his leg on a heater in LA! This man spent most of his career in Minnesota, and he gets cold in LA.
BBDs giggle killed me
Might be my favorite part at this point lol. Thanks for keeping the guys in line BBD!
everytime
Love the episodes with Jimmy. Big 2021 vibes
describing framing as “tricking old men” may have changed my entire perspective on it
Dodgers stadium paints thin lines for the batters box on purpose because a player said they didn’t like the thick lines. Uni watch did an article about it.
The one thing about this that wasn’t really talked about, Contrareas in his interview after the game said, the risk is worth to him. He said when he gets back from the IL he’s going to go right back to doing that and get that close.
Catchers are simply a different breed.
- Source: I caught.
Which is dumb because being out months hurts the team WAY more than getting a strike here and there helps the team
Nothing says being a useful player than being constantly on the IL
“Latin for loser that burnt his own legs” 😭
Ok… Trevor is a famous baseball player, Jomboy is a legit media company. Why can’t we get my man Trevor something other than a 12.99 Walmart Logitech web cam… jeebus
Agree with Trev on Jazz. Still confused about the Show Cover. Julio definitely got robbed.
Still don't understand the Jordan thing but that is neither here nor there.
He has the potential to be "that guy" but definitely never legitimately earned those.
Same situation with Vlad Jr
As a Cardinal fan, I saw this as our own fault. The amount of embarrassment I have that Oli is our manager, is beyond measurable. Nothing about his tenure has given me an ounce of confidence that he even remotely knows anything of value about baseball.
I know a ton of us give Mo a hard time, but at least his resume has some highlights, and I certainly believe he is mostly a “yes-man” to ownership. I am sure he is quite restricted behind the scenes… but Oli as a manager, just wow. Losing is one thing, but turning my town/franchise into a clown show is another… and I for one put that squarely on the manager.
The last few years have been depressing. It feels like Oli doesn't understand players are more than just stats. How many good statistical decisions need to go bad before you start questioning your stats?
But remember, be patient, results are coming, eventually, maybe, stats point to yes.
It's becoming very clear that Shildt is a much better manager than Marmol.
@@andrewfriedrichs9340the manager probably is bad. The front office definitely stinks. But let’s not forget the players are bad. Goldy and arenado are shells of their former selves.
I’m loving the intensity on BBD’s face as he gets jimmy’s screen onto the broadcast.
Thanks Trevor. I have a similar skin issue and my doctor had no clue why it was happening. I have a space heater as well.
100 percent agree with Trevs take about Chisholm. That sound clip is SO DAMNING, he acts like he should be treated like Ken Griffey Jr and do what he wants. But to brag about not practicing from your rookie year to 3 4 years down the row, no wonder why he hasn’t got any better as a player and the marlins are the way they are. Player development system needs to be revamped.
After watching that live I couldn’t believe how far up Contreras was. I’ve never seen a catcher get hit on their forearm before…I mean glove sure but he was so far up it is insane. Sucks to see happen
Plouffe declares Jazz Chisolm average. Thought that was a pretty spicy take til I saw the numbers. He's gotten a lot of mileage out of those 60 games in 2022 and MLB the show cover. Need to see what a full season looks like.
A Reddit post mentioned this once about how the lines of the batters box aren’t standard throughout the league so some grounds crews will alter the box if a player requests it. In the case for dodgers stadium, some player in the 2000s, I believe, requested thinner lines and the head grounds keeper hasn’t changed it since.
Jazz getting the MLB The Show 23 nod over Julio will never not be crazy to me. Dude is the definition of mid.
There needs to be a true dead-zone between the batter and catcher. Yes, the catchers are having to do it because it helps them get some low strikes but how about, hear me out here, MLB stops allowing GARBAGE umpires to call balls and strikes so it's not necessary for catchers to put themselves in this position because Angel and CB have no clue what they're doing.
Based on those comparisons Jimmy showed, it looks more like a catcher's issue than a batter's issue. Don't want to get injured? Don't have your glove right up in my ass trying to frame strikes.
It's not the batters fault. Every post yesterday was phrased in a way blaming JD Martinez for the injury. Catchers need to quit sitting so far forward and the simplest solution is bringing Robo Umps to MLB which would completely eliminate the "framing" garbage
He was standing with his back foot outside the batter's box, whic his against the rules. I love JD but players need to get penalized for doing that.
@@jasongiannaros4091Wrong. The rules specifically say the batter’s foot must be ENTIRELY over the line in order to be illegal. JD’s foot was halfway over
@@jasongiannaros4091 His foot was on the line. That's a legal position to stand. Is it further back than a lot of batters? Sure, but it's a completely legal place to stand per the rules and it's on the catcher to not sit so far forward and risk the possibility of getting their arm broken on a swing.
This is 100% the way. The contreras brothers alone, probably steal more strikes than most of the other catchers combined and they do that by moving insanely so close to the box that their gloves are sitting inside it. Trash but effective strategy, but they cant complain or even be surprised when they catch some bathead to the dome every once in a while
What an awful take
re: the shape of the batters box - it's a weird high angle shot, possibly a wide angle lens. AND it's a phone picture of a screen. All sorts of image distort going on.
8:07 putting that pencil to work
Goldy to the Guards sounds awful. The man is in his worst slump in years and we have maybe the best first baseman in the AL in Josh Naylor. Not to mention the top prospect we just called up is 1B/DH
Came to the comments just for how dumb that suggestion was. I’d rather get a starting pitcher or upgrade corner outfield.
Buddy all it will take is one pack of peanuts and he’s yours lol
The biggest takeaway I have from all of these early rule infractions and shit is Baseball has SO MANY rules that aren't uniformly enforced and stipulated. Base running paths, slides, batters standing way the hell back, catchers way the hell forward.
MLB has all the power to change anything they want whenever they want. The moment Buster Posey got injured, baseball completely changed the collision rules overnight
It’s ALWAYS 100% on the catcher. The batter has nothing to lose. I coach youth and my catchers are taught to stretch out before they get set and the mitt needs to be 4 inches behind the batters back leg.
Edit- I ALWAYS fill and pack those holes until the batters box. We drag all that dirt from behind the box back in and tamp it in until my arms are dead. And the first batter immediately digs em back out lol.
100% on the catcher, his mitt was almost past the batter.
I know the Angels suck but it infuriates me when Jimmy talks about them
Winker and Trevor Williams the Catholic are a fair sacrifice for a certifiably dank 2025 Nats
I was a little "whoa there, Trev" about the average stuff, but then they read off the receipts and he was absolutely correct, so go off, Trev.
Trev and his take on jazz was beautiful and spot on. Idk who that dude thinks he is
This is an actual rule that should be implemented by MLB .There should a certain distance that you have stay from the batters box reaching past the boundary should be a penalty .
Early trades can pay off, look at CC in 2008, it was a prime example of a power move that turned an entire season around.
Dodgers batters box is thinner. Basically tradition but many years ago a dodgers player asked for it to be thinner and the grounds crew did it and just still keeps it thin
In the wise words of Sting, "Don't stand so close to me"
Wow, sorry to hear about Trev’s toasted skin. Feel better Big Guy!
"You know who has no bias? AI!"
Is that a joke?
People also used to be terrified of genuine medicine, vehicles, lights, and so on.
@@zaneplatt3533 respectfully, what does that have to do with what i said?
@@zaneplatt3533not close to ai dweeb
I thought it was well known that the batters box at dodgers stadium is skinnier than every other stadium. Braves broadcast discussed it last week actually while we got swept.
I'd like to see umpire game scores when they are behind contreras since they are significantly closer to the plate.
NL west commentators have been talking about the mickey mouse batter's boxes at Dodger Stadium all year
It’s worth noting that Arenado has a full no-trade clause
No, that tweet is correct, even if the wording is a little off.
From OBR:
5.04(b)(5) The batter's legal position shall be with both feet within the batter's box.
APPROVED RULING: The lines defining the box are within the batter's box.
I think people are getting confused with where the feet can be when the batter swings:
6.03(a)(1) A batter is out for illegal action when: He hits a ball with one or both feet on the ground entirely outside the batter's box.
Dodger stadium does their batter’s box lines thin like that. They’ve been doing it for 15-20 years at this point
They discussed the handedness stats for the park. I don't love that stat because if you have 1 or 2 guys on your team dominating OPS in a season that are both the same handedness it can really skew the results. The one extra filter I would love to put on that is home vs away so you could control for that.
I used to stand sooo far back in the box, im glad I never did that to anyone. Never even considered it could happen 😮
I have always felt that way about Jazz Chisholm Selfish, worldly attitude, he can sit and rot with the Marlins. I wouldn’t touch him
Fun ep boys
Dodgers always do the thin lines for the batter box. Guess they are saving cost there to help offset the payroll.
The Magnum Condom Studios need to spring for a large scale portable radiator! Love the blupisode guys!
Miklaz with a gem: catcher interference, one per 809g in 2016, one per 405g in 2018, one per 81g in 2019, one per 50g 2023
Batters and catchers having to share space by home plate… that’s baseball Suzyn
He talks about the brewers catching lab often, about how the brewers turn below average catchers into above average catcher. This issue i feel like is what the brewers do
For some reason that’s what the batter’s box in Dodger stadium looks like. The lines are super thing.
Robbie Grossman. Very happy to have him back in TX Very good against left handed pitching top 3 in league last year.
I noticed during the Braves/Dodgers game this past week that LA is using the thinner line for the box. This could make sense since the outer edge of the box (and foul lines) is official line. With a 4” line all you’re getting is a big mess of a line. 🤷🏻♂️
I strongly feel the catcher’s glove should not be able to position their mitt passed the back line of the box.
I guess i never heard Jazz Chisholm talk before but he sounds like the nineteen year old kid that i work with. Not saying it's a good or bad thing but he just sounds very young
solution to the batter box problem: move the mound back again, haven't done it since 1969 and with the crazy velo changes recently I think its the easiest way to fix some of these issues
Carl Everett got ejected after going nuts on an ump when he was told to stay in the batters box. Everett got suspended and fined after making contact with the ump.
Jazz to the Blue Jays would be a MESS
He’d fit right in with the attitude & culture of that team tho 🤷🏼♂️.
Him & Vladdy are the president & vice president of the entitled club
I'd assume that catchers setting up farther forward also helps them to catch runners stealing. They receive the pitch more quickly, and it's a shorter distance to make the throw.
I need a talkin baseball episode that puts the Yadier Molina vs dh playing catcher Salvador Perez debate to rest
erythema ab igni sounds like a harry potter spell.
19:28 didn’t bonds stand up in the box? And Christian yellich?
Where can I watch the full Jazz interview?
It’s his interview on the pivot podcast
Heavy, they should build a baseball field with very specific dirt areas for batters and bass runners and if they go out of the dirt, they are out. Just like when you were a kid and the carpet was hot lava you cannot touch it for batters and bass runners. The grass is hot lava they cannot touch it think it could be pretty cool.
The Guardians don't need a 1B, they have Naylor.
Jimmy & Trev hit the nail on the head about the interview. The discourse following it was surprising
No one wants Jazz, not even the Marlins
Depends on the catcher. Austin Barnes can crowd the batter but post $140M contract Will Smith doesn't have to anymore.
If the catcher moves forward, does the umpire move forward with him? Wouldn't the umpire standing closer to the plate allow him to see the pitch location/plate better and denote the efficacy of a catcher's framejob.
i always thought it was dumb batters could stand so far forward or backward. Just make them be centered at the plate or narrow it drastically. The catchers should be close to homeplate
I've seen dodgers stadium paint their batter's box like that for years. They don't use the stencil like most grounds crews do. Theoretically the line being thinner should result in the battery being an inch or two farther away from the catcher if their toe is touching the chalk.
I'm all for going at batters over the ridiculous follow-throughs, but this one seems like more of a catcher problem. Hope Willson heals up well
I think that dodgers Martinez picture is from early July 2023
I hope we get a challenge system with only one challenge per game, which you keep if you win the challenge. For me that's the only way to think twice before tapping that head (that's what she said?)
as someone whos never played baseball, ive always wondered why not more catchers get hit
So much on boxes, humans have different reach lengths and swings. You can't regulate arm span or swing types. I don't want catchers hurt, but ultimately, catchers literally call the games and their main job is knowing each batter's swing & tendencies. This is mostly on catchers.
I can't speak for all Nats fns, but we know that we aren't a playoff caliber team right now. I loved the Winker and Gallo signings specifically so we could trade them at the deadline and call up dylan crews and james wood
Don't let batters erase the chalk line
It's the name and the swag. That's all he's got.
Astros can’t get vladdy they literally have one of worst farm systems
@17:30 .. I've been saying this. Pitch framing is just about lying to and deceiving old guys. Are those really traits we want to instill in kids? Even if it's just within the rules of the "game", peoples careers are at risk and those traits will bleed over into the "real world". But hey, this is what happens when billions of dollars are involved, you become willing to sacrifice the health and well being of others.
its on sight for JD....but its also on site for Oli and the entire Cardinals FO - life long cardinals fan
I’m no GM but as a braves fan Id be pretty bummed to get jazz for Kelenic. Kelenic has potential, but even if he doesn’t turn out, I’d take a quiet average player doing his job than a loud average player causing problems. I wouldn’t be too upset though, because we have the most under rated player in the league to pick up the slack if things go south either way. You need a clutch at bat to win a big game? Give me Adam Duvall from the right side over either lefty.
Trev is literally cooked
Jazz is the worst thing MLB promotes even over gambling shoehei and pitching injuries. He’s literally MLB’s industry plant get rid of him.
Thank you for your sacrifice Trev
Enforce where the battery can stand, and enforce how far forward the catcher's glove can go. Draw a new line. Done.
Dodgers batters box has been super thin like that for a while. I noticed it a few years ago.
The odd part to me was that it was not a box, i.e. no 90 degree corners.
No reason catchers can't learn from this and wear a shield on the arm, like batters put on their shins. Problem solved, discussion and concern over. It'll be a new thing. Rawlings loves the idea of more gear to sell!
Catchers are so close that they're getting hit on the back of their heads by the backswing of the hitter. Will Smith has taken a couple of good whacks, as has at least one other batter by the same batter. Who needs a career ending conclusion?
Bbd needs it to be thr plate if he is behind the dish. Ill keep commenting it until it is changed
so i’m confused did Fedde Wap to the Rays happen or nah?
I hit up in the box because of the craters and I mostly face old men throwing junk.
Wednesday’s for the boys
Why don't they just make a catcher's box? Just like for the batter.
How did Molina set up?
Almost every team needs a better bullpen there just isnt the "guy(s)" to fill all the needs.
