Saying "Cal Ripken Jr. wasn't really a home run hitter" is crazy. Dude had over 400 home runs! I know he only once went over 30 in a season but the man compiled so many over his very very long career.
And that's the thing. There's no true benchmark for what a home run hitter is, but most people use it to talk about the guys who put up 40, 50, 60 in a year. Ripken compiled his stats over a 21 year career, so it would be more fair to say he was a gold glove shortstop who was a massively productive hitter... _with power._
He played his entire 21 year career with the Orioles and broke Lou Gehrig's consecutive games record. He had pretty consistent and decent pop but with how long he played he would have been the safe guess.
Career .289 average and .399 obp is absolutely nuts. When I saw the position and teams/years I thought "oh is this that guy who walked like crazy?" Nick Johnson was ahead of his time, his skills would have been much more appreciated today
I remember him being good and extremely injury prone. And underrated "what if" player. However I definitely underrated him myself because I did not realize he was consistently put up OPS like that. Probably the main reason is because no one cared about OPS yet
Great to see Dalton appear on RefGuess again! He and his enthusiasm is greatly missed! Blind guessing Nick Johnson may be the most impressed at myself I've ever been in RefGuess.
If he had that 2006 season in 2021, so many people would be talking about him more . 110 walks and 47 doubles is nasty and would be a 1/2 hitter on a very good team instead of wasting that performance in the middle of the order and being forgotten about because of the 77 RBIs
You should do a game where you give the top 5 in each year of the MVP. Player and team hidden, just stats. See if they can correctly rank them in MVP votes or just pick the correct winner out of the group.
Interesting the easy player's stats cut his Milwaukee cup of coffee, threw me off for a second since I tend to think associate that era with the Carlos Lee trade.
The Orioles was the easy one for me. I wasn't sure how many Dawson had before moving to Chicago and that is who I guessed, but knew I probably overthought it.
@@mse326 I knew it was Ripken mainly because they’ve done a video before where they had to name the franchise home run leaders for every team but I wasn’t 100% sure about Zimmerman but he seemed like the best choice to me.
Most likely cause it was suppose to be an easy question. And I can almost guarentee if they put the 8 games with the brewers in 05. Alot of them woulda been so confused as hes typically remembered for starting with the rangers. Like he only had 7 PAs for the brewers lol
Almost 500 bombs and only 1 season above 30 in his first like 9 year. The premier power hitter of the 2010s. From 2014 until the pandemic year the lowest amount he hit was 37 lol
As an Orioles fan, I think most of us thought Wieters offensively would be in that .270/30/100 area. And for a little while, he was right around there. But I remember the scouting report on him coming out of GA Tech was that he was a purely offensive catcher who would probably be better at 1B or DH because of his lackluster defense and height. Yet he actually turned into one of the best defensive catchers in the game in an era with Molina, Perez, Posey, Martin, Mauer, and so many other great catchers, which was more than we ever hoped for him.
At first when they said Nick Johnson, I was like Dalton and had no idea who the guy was. But then I saw what Nick Johnson looked like and immediately knew who it was🤣🤣🤣
Grew up an O's fan in close to peak Cal years, then adopted the Nats as my main team when they arrived, so 5/5 here. As a theme suggestion, you should take a crack at MLB dads one week, then MLB sons another week. Lots of options for both. Sometimes the dad is more famous, sometimes the son is. Lotta ways to go with it.
Bet Joez probably thought Ripkin wasn’t much of a home run hitter because Yankees fans want Jeter to be the better SS but Ripkin was better fielding and way better at power hitting.
We win every trade so having a tiny loss isnt a big deal lmao.though id say as a rays fan we easily take 13hr and 36rbis in 55 games. Did we want a little more out of him?? Sure. But he got hr and rbis when we needed it. Sucks it didnt work out as good as it could’ve though
It’s not his fault? 99.9% of MAJOR LEAGUE outfielders catch that ball and win the World Series. The Texas Rangers lost that series because of Nelson Cruz
Why do they always make weird random edits to these screenshots? Wieters’ page had the triples column removed, and Cruz’s page had his first year with the brewers removed…but why? It’s not like they wouldn’t fit on screen or give stuff away…
I assume this is one of those where they don't specify, but they are only including home runs hit with that team, because it is wrong the way it is written.
yall gotta stop with the I Got Hard jokes. Wasn't that funny to begin with tbh, but it's a little weird for an all-male team, and it's very played out by now
I do love that jolly hesitated on the blind guess as if he had to remember wieters was easy or medium.
I threw off "Matt Wieters" clicking the video
*Leads the league in RBI in 2017*

THIS. INSANE BEHAVIOR BY HIM.
Yankee fans will always undervalue Ripken because they can't come to terms that Jeter is indeed #2 to Cal.
He played his entire 21 year career with the Orioles and broke Lou Gehrig's consecutive games record. He had pretty consistent and decent pop but with how long he played he would have been the safe guess.
I am happy that Mr. National is in the video. He won't make the Hall of Fame but people should remember Ryan Zimmerman.
Nats are gonna retire his number, right?
@@QuarrelsomeLocalOaf They already did

That 2006 Nick Johnson season was really nice. 110 walks and 69 extra base hits
Yes, he actually did have 0 triples. For some reason, they don't list that column here.

Jolly gave ‘em a layup on that bonus question, but everyone tried getting fancy with Eddie Murray smh.
It's the obvious answers that throw you off sometimes.

Nick Johnson took me a hot second -- remember him faintly in mlb 2k days
Did y'all crop out Nelson Cruz's 2005 with Milwaukee?
Yes
It's on his b-ref page because he played there, but not here, so yes, obviously they cropped it.

They also edited out the triples column for Wieters for some reason
Max is tied up in Jake's trunk, isn't he?
As a Nik Johnson, this was so bizarre hearing them all say my name. Don't get me wrong, I knew who Nick Johnson was in the show, but weird still.
I always forget how good of a career that Nelson Cruz had

Somewhere in an alternate universe John Nickson stayed healthy and was Joey Votto before Joey Votto
I look forward to these every Thursday
There’s only been 3 ref guess names in the history of the game to stump me. I love this shit 😂😂😂
Crazy how the wall art keeps moving 🤔 dalton must’ve did his segment before it was put up 😂
The problem with being a Catcher in the AL is Salvy is there, especially from 2013 on.
Joez cracks me up every time
did joes just stand up to show us how hard he got??

Very friendly ref guess today. Hard was one of my favorite players to watch.
I love Dalton being in this.

everyone just forgot wieters had both his ankles broken and thats why he fell off
Easiest ref guess so far.
Nick Johnson is still the Nats WAR leader at 1B ( most of Zimmerman's was accrued at 3B.)
i thought the trivia question at the end would be gotten by everyone that's so crazy
Brewers/Twins players could be a good rivalry episode.
That was by far the easiest ref guess one ever as well as the trivia question
where is nelson cruz's milwaukee year jolly?
Jake really takin over
11:36 Joez 😂
I love Shelfy he’s so funny
Bet Joez probably thought Ripkin wasn’t much of a home run hitter because Yankees fans want Jeter to be the better SS but Ripkin was better fielding and way better at power hitting.
Lets get an I-70 series Ref guess this year! (Cards Royals)
Man as an Os fan who really only gets these when they are Os players, this was sick
Jake is on a heater! Go snakes
MLB the Show 06 helped me get Nick Johnson
Why did they literally exclude Cruz being on the Brewers to start his career......?
5-5. That was super nice.

Nationals mentioned
Come on guys! Nick Johnson. It's so easy.
Jake singing stick season :3 good song im glad jake like them
This entire thing was easy. All insta-gets.
would be cool if they show the amount of time spend for the answer.
Have not watched yet, but I'd bet that the 2011 AL ROY is the hard question (avoiding saying his name to prevent spoilers if I'm right)
Jeremy Hellickson was not included, much to my chagrin, but I was perfect and finally nailed a trivia question, so I can't complain.
12:00 To add to players that invented things, Hawk Harrelson, notorious homer and all around terrible announcer, invented the batting glove
You're not slipping Nick Johnson by Yankees fans
yeah pretty weak to call that one "hard"

Haha both my teams. Got everything except for hard, he was a little before my time.
Ripken played 3000 games for the O's, how tf are you guys not picking him??
Cal 431 to Murray's 343; Zimmerman 284 to Vlad's 234
How did Wieters only play 26 games in 2014 and make an ASG?
I blind guessed easy!
Why did they leave nelson cruz 2005 season with MIL off?
Why don’t you include Milwaukee for Nelly Cruz?
jeremy guthrie would've been a good one as well hehe. weird good career
Them O's Ain't Royal
Hello please get with B-ref to make this a daily playable online game a-la immaculate grid
Why do they always make weird random edits to these screenshots? Wieters’ page had the triples column removed, and Cruz’s page had his first year with the brewers removed…but why? It’s not like they wouldn’t fit on screen or give stuff away…
Charles Schwab? And DraftKings? Two gambling websites?
The brewers hate continues, they cut off nelson cruz's first year with the crew...
Having a Yankee for the hard question seems super unfair.
Eddie Murray had more I just checked
Not all of them were for the Orioles. Ripkin has more with the Orioles
Murray had 343 as an Oriole to Ripken's 431. He played a lot longer elsewhere (8 and a half seasons) than most people realize.
@@GaryDodgerfan oh okay I thought it was for their full career
Nick johnson

Week 2 of asking for pat nesheck
Is there anywhere online for me to play ref guess?
They post some on Twitter occasionally. The @ is like JM ref guess
@@henrycheatum8546 Thanks for the heads up.
Why’d you crop out Nelson Cruz’s 2005 with the brewers
Shelfy thinks 9 is pitcher and 2 is 2nd Base? Clearly never played baseball.
Shelfy needed that. Also, disastrous for Max. His fill in slipped and Jake went maximum.
Faeou saying "his replacement" and not my name is disrespectful man shhesshhhhh
